3:00 PM
And yet my 16-year old consoles are still running fine.
The whole point was, you just take a piece of plastic and you plug it into another piece of plastic, and you are good to go. And with no loading times, too!

@RegDwigнt Now now, at least every 6+ year old PC game should work

@RegDwigнt Yeah, that sucks. Forced to be online.

@Robusto well not just online. I was online. It was Live who wasn't.

Live was dead!

I was taking the other side of the argument.

3:02 PM
@Robusto there can be no sides to arguments. That's crazy talk.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah and I can buy those... where?

@RegDwigнt Steam

FFS, what is Steam?
Why do I need to install shit to install shit?

Like Xbox-live for PCs

What is Steam? What kind of a commie are you?

I just want to play. Now.

3:04 PM
I've had Steam for 10 years and it has never failed me.

@RegDwigнt Are you sure? My machine is now 6 years old, and when I built it I based it on parts from the "recommended budget PC build" sites at the time.

@Robusto I tried Steam because I wanted to play FTL. That was a year ago or so. Today I still haven't played a second of FTL, and I still have no Steam.

You can buy games and they become part of your "library" and it keeps them updated and you can install them on any PC where you log into steam.

@MattЭллен Yesss!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I know what Steam is. Will you people start getting the point?

3:05 PM
@RegDwigнt I don't know what your point is. Steam works really well. Much better than I thought it would when I first heard of it.

I even have that other Steam-like thing installed. The one Cerberus linked to. I think it was EA's shit. For playing Zombies vs. Plants.

@RegDwigнt Why haven't you played FTL yet, and why no Steam? It works perfectly.

Obviously it does not work here. Unlike Nintendo 64.

@RegDwigнt Ah, Origin.
What doesn't work? Steam doesn't work on your computer??

Whatever you say. I really forgot the name.
@Cerberus It's been a year. I don't know. I don't care. I just know it's not there.

3:06 PM
Install Steam, it takes only a few minutes.

I'm at work right now.

Log in, and all your games will be there.

See, even Cerb likes Steam, a foreign-spy-network-DRM-tool

That's another thing. Why the heck can't I own anything anymore.

OK do it when you get home, especially if your console is still Live-Dead.

3:07 PM
@RegDwigнt You can install it at work, it's okay

even some games that you didn't buy! because anything free gets added

I have to rely on Gabe not selling his soul to Satan. Or getting killed.

@Cerberus long live Steam!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, well, at least it isn't a company with totally screwed up economic incentives, like all the console guys. And games still load if you're offline! Maybe there are exceptions, but most games will still load, right?

@RegDwigнt That's true. But of all the DRM-infested things in the world, Steam has been the most reliable and most customer-friendly that I've seen.
@Cerberus What's "offline" mean?

3:08 PM
@Cerberus you forget the operational word: now. It takes just one minute to change that.

@RegDwigнt I think Steam has issues a guarantee that they will open source everything if the company or the service should ever stop working.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Google used to be non-evil, too. Remember? That was less than a decade ago.

@RegDwigнt Anyway as you've seen, you don't even own your xbox, so it's basically the same.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 When your Internet is down?
@RegDwigнt I don't think it ever was non-evil?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 my point exactly. I say X sucks ass, and y'all say, well get Y, it's the exact same thing!

3:10 PM
@RegDwigнt No, it's similar but better

@RegDwigнt Hey, at least it's free. You can install it and remove it at any time without having paid a euro.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 At the danger of repeating myself: it takes but a minute to go from better to worse.
I can do it right now, watch me!
@Cerberus so is Xbox Live.

I am turning off my Internet connection now. Bye, Reg!

CU
Actually I wanted to leave early today.
So let me pack up for the commute.

@RegDwigнt No, you misunderstand me. You were complaining that your PC can't play games. I said it could, and you said where do I get those games?, and I said "steam", which is, in my experience, at least as good as what modern consoles offer.

3:11 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ah well yes.
I am still coming from the console end of things.

You don't want to play games on your PC, fine, but it should be doable.

Oh I want alright.
I enjoyed Plants vs Zombies a lot.
And I would really like to try out FTL.

Then steam's the best bet. Or that website that sells old games DRM-free.... forget what they're called.

Though with FTL the problem is it won't run on my machine even if Steam will.

Yeah you still need to look at minimum specs of games before you install.

3:13 PM
@RegDwigнt Wait.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Exactly. This is so unlike plugging a piece of plastic into another piece of plastic and have it just work.

I have just tested it: I can still run FTL while my computer is entirely disconnected from the Internet.

@Cerberus I can't do that with Plants vs. Zombies. I can't even start up the game.

@RegDwigнt On your PC?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 GOG.com

@Cerberus yes on my PC. I told you I got it via the link you posted.

3:14 PM
Origin is worse than Steam

With that Origin thing.
I have even downloaded a couple more games since.

@RegDwigнt Oh, well, maybe Origin sucks. I have rarely used it.

Can't remember what they were.

Only for Dragon Age.

Something with Black Ops I never even tried, and something else that I tried and played a lot.
Oh yeah, that pebble thing or what it's called.

3:15 PM
@RegDwigнt Ah OK, I didn't know you had actually played it.

@MattЭллен 5 bucks? What a ripoff.

@MattЭллен It was free on Origin.

You're so picky.

But yeah, just the other month I downloaded and played Costume Quest, plus the extension plus Costume Quest 2, only to notice that I'd have paid half the price on Steam.

3:16 PM
I hate happy zombies. What do they have to be happy about?

I dunno, I imagine being a zombie is all cool and stuff.

@Cerberus but then you have to install origin.

@RegDwigнt So anyway, you can get 100000000 games for very little money on Steam, games from 6 years ago that are still super cool, or Indie games, and you can play them offline, after installation. Only the latest AAA games are expensive on Steam, and some of them may require being online white starting the game.

@RegDwigнt But zombies singing cheerful songs using auto-tune?

@Cerberus as I said. I know what Steam is.
No need to pitch it to me.

3:18 PM
@RegDwigнt Steam is better than Origin in everything. So if you can, get the game on Steam rather than Origin. But if it's free on Origin, why not keep both spying programmes installed?

@Robusto so basically Rihanna. Yeah you're right, that sucks.

I don't care if you have a screen-door shield. Being a zombie has to be a wretched existence. Otherwise everyone would want to be a zombie.

@RegDwigнt OK OK.

But I really gotta run now.
Lators.
Or rather, morrows.

I bet you're not really going to run. You're going to take public transportation.

3:19 PM
I suppose I'll be playing World of Tanks for the rest of the day, evening, and night.

Bye!
Have fun.

@RegDwigнt Tanks, but no tanks.

@Robusto if you bet at least $1000 bucks, I will accept the bet, and ensure you lose.

"$1000 bucks" is redundant.

3:20 PM
@Robusto five days left!
@Robusto I knew you were going to say that.

gimme some dollar bucks

Actually no, I expected you to be wittier.

You know everything. So what else is knew?

Knewport upon York.

You're still not running.
@MattЭллен Jinxx.

3:22 PM
Which tab did you have the future Robusto saying that in?

@Cerberus All tabs have the future Robusto saying all things.
@Cerberus And to answer your real question, the answer is in the transcript. There was an actual jinx. Can you find it?

Umm.

"$1000 bucks" is redundant and gimme some dollar bucks make the same point, albeit in different ways.

Ah, you mean Matt's line.
I saw that.
By the way, has the transcript always been in GMT?
Is it is GMT for you too?

So far as I can tell.

3:29 PM
Oh.

Well, not really. It's showing local time now.
I think it used to be GMT.

See, the time is wrong for me.
But the fact that I only now notice this suggests that it is normally local time.

Time isn't wrong. Time can never be wrong. It must be your fault somehow.

Nothing ever is.

3:57 PM
The transcript shows GMT for me, as it always has

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our moderation team for their very low rejection rate of 5% for questions migrated from ELU to ELL.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hmm how come I have never noticed this before?

@Cerberus Because you live in Europe

So...
We have time in Europe, you know.

So your timezone is closer to GMT

4:07 PM
It's not all backwards.
It is, but still.
I suppose it kind of makes sense for the log to be in GMT for everyone.

So the times in the transcript match your memory of when stuff happens even if it's off by an hour, unless you distinctly remember that you said something at noon and the transcript shows 11am or 1pm or whatever it will show
But for me the times in the transcript are total rubbish
the day boundaries are meaningless
I have to try to remember what the current offset is from GMT, and how that reflects on the times in the transacript
If something happened "at the end of the day" for me, it's actually in tomorrow's transcript.
It has always been thus, and it's pretty noticeable.

@Cerberus Steam installed just now. My computer is very clean, but it just doesn't seem to turn on at all.
I used the espresso maker frothing adapter. That's what you meant, right?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The latter has probably happened to me, but then I wrote it off as my own mistake.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I see, okay.
@Mitch Huh, that's weird?

@Cerberus He means he steamed his computer

Is Steam active in your Task Manager, alt-control-delete → Task Manager?
@Mitch Ohh you rascal.
I thought that second line was some sort of pun referring to something else that I didn't get.

4:14 PM
@Cerberus I'm squirrelly.
But my computer smells real good
Have you all seen this...
Cheese-tastic! -> Fr = Fromidable!

@Mitch Yes, they sell that in stores here
for some reason language log isn't loading for me

I've told you everything you need to know.

well, I already knew it

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nor for me.

Mitch must have broken it

4:18 PM
when I steamed it.

spreading the word about spreadable cheese products with funny names

> It's not just you! languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu looks down from here.
@Mitch What was the temperature of your steam? It needs to be really hot.

Crap...it's broken for me too now.
@Cerberus I tried it on the back of my hand. it burned a hole through. is that what's supposed to happen?
that has a picture (not the same one as LL)
here is LL's

@Mitch Hmm the steam was so hot that it caused fire?
I suppose that is possible?
@Mitch Delicious!

@Cerberus I'm sure some milk product was in the processing plant at the same time as its manufacture.
@Cerberus The water was so hot it caught fire.
Then that was so hot, the fire caught fire.
So... really hot.

4:36 PM
your fire is on fire

I told you it was hot.

@Mitch It's just no-name Cheese Whiz. It's cheese... not a particularly good cheese, but still cheese.

Sans-nom .. wait...what is 'cheese-whiz en francais?

Data guy just told me some middle school has 8,084 teachers using the same textbook. I told him to refine his query.

fontaine de fromage?
@Robusto They're a very caring middle school, a 10 to 1 ratio of teacher-student ratio.

4:39 PM
First of all, 8K teachers would imply > 100,000 students, and I don't know of a single school that would ever have that many.

@Mitch I dunno but when I GIS "fromidable" I get this:

@Robusto ha! sadly the latest show stopping bug to be found here is only partly user error.

@Robusto Well, I would think directly in terms of the number of teachers instead of the number of students and get the same conclusion.

@Robusto wouldn't that imply 8000 classrooms?

"We're not receiving enough signal! I'll leave you to figure it out." figures... "You're not sending enough signal to start with."
"It's still off centre for no reason."

4:40 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Not necessarily. A classroom could be used by multiple teachers at different times of the day.

:( "yes it is"

But schools that have > 100 classrooms are probably few and far between.

and schools with > 100 teachers...

@Robusto in a middle school? Aren't the teachers typically all teaching all day?

That's just like a data guy, though. Runs the query and gives you the answer without ever letting it pass through the WTF filter.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Not necessarily. Most have 3-5 classes. And physical classrooms are multi-user.
Or can be.
Even the biggest university in the US, Ohio State (I think) only has around 50K students. And that's a whole frickin' university.
Hmm, Ohio State only has 41k students.

4:46 PM
@Robusto Middle schools must be different where you are. Here, teachers have 7 45 minute periods of teaching per day and at most one of them is a spare.

University of Central Florida has more 42k.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Whatever. We're still talking the same order of magnitude.

My home school has 1 student: me, lol.

The point is, no middle school would ever have 100K students.

They have high school and middle school. They should call it low school instead of elementary school.

Waukegan, IL only has 88k population.

5:05 PM
Hola.

@Mahnax Boo! Good luck for your exams!

@WillHunting Thank you! My first exam is on 9 December.

@Mahnax Could you email me about Maria? I would like to know.

@WillHunting OK.
Sent.

@Mahnax Should I use your new email address from now onwards?

5:13 PM
@WillHunting Sure. They all go to the same mail program, so whatever works best for you.
I just use that one primarily now.
As well as my school e-mail for more professional matters.

@Mahnax OK, I will update my records. I prefer using addresses with real names, lol.

@WillHunting Sounds good.

@Mahnax Did you take Further Math in the IB, or just Math HL?

@WillHunting I took Math SL. We didn't have the option to do Math HL.

@Mahnax WTF! What kind of school is that, lol.

5:20 PM
@WillHunting Well, we had two curricula to worry about: Alberta Ed and IB. Math HL was too much extra stuff to worry about.
Our HLs were picked for us.
English Lit, Bio, History.

@Mahnax I read that there is now Mathematical Studies SL, Math SL, Math HL, and Further Math HL, lol.

I would've gone with Math, Chem, and French B, personally.

@Mahnax That's very sad.

@WillHunting Yep. Too late to worry about it now though! :)

@Mahnax Anyway, it's OK as you are not doing math, lol.

5:23 PM
Yes indeed. Although HL Chem would have been really cool.

Oh, you are right. Still, your school is so weird.

Most IB schools in my area are like that, I think.

@Mahnax Are you happy with life now? I think I will only be happy when I am completely well.
@Mahnax I see. Are you seeing any psychiatrist or psychotherapist? You can always talk to me. I consider myself an expert, lol.

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. But no, not at present.

I have been unwell for about 15 years now. It is very sad.
I have lost almost everything in life. Luckily I have a mum who is taking care of me.

5:34 PM
Yes, fortunately you have your mother.
How is she doing?

She is OK.

Hmm, that's not so bad, then.

Yes, let's hope neither of us gets any physical illness.

Indeed.

@Mahnax Have you studied Buddhism? Not that it would help, but it gives interesting perspectives on many things.

user116848
5:37 PM
@Mahnax Hi Mahnax. How are you?

@WillHunting No, I haven't.
@Farooq I'm alright, how are you doing?

user116848
I am fine. Thanks!

Good! :)

user116848
@Mahnax You don't come here often these days. I am guessing you are busy with studies etc.

@Farooq Yes, quite busy.
But I'm trying to pop in and say hello once in a while.
This chat is not so active anymore.

user116848
5:41 PM
I see :-)

Not compared to what it was one or two years ago, I don't think.

@mahnax Don't ever forget me. We will meet some day!

@WillHunting If you say so!
I could not forget anyone I've met here, I've been a part of this place for so long.
Three years is a long time for an 18 year old.

I suddenly feel very sad now. Sometimes, I think I may never get well.

@Mitch Unlikely.

5:44 PM
@WillHunting Don't lose heart. There is always the possibility of a bright future, and you are yet young.
2
@Cerberus Hi, Spot!

@Mitch I'm sure steam can get hot enough to set things on fire, why couldn't it?
@Mahnax Woof!

pats heads

What do you think, can steam get hot enough to set something on fire?

By the way, does steam refer to the liquid or the gas? I think it is the liquid.

Or perhaps the problem is that it can't stay hot enough in a practical situation?
@WillHunting Gas.

5:46 PM
@Cerberus Oh? I thought it was the recently condensed gas that is visible.

That is true.
Steam is not visible.

It's actually condensed water vapor that is visible. Water vapor isn't properly a gas.

It seems to me that water vapour is a gas and steam is a liquid. That is, the former condenses into the latter.

Ice is a solid. Water is a liquid. Steam is the gaseous form of water.
Water vapor has ceased to be steam.

I got curious, so I searched for it a little bit, and found that!

6:03 PM
I've cooked an egg in a Dixie cup over a campfire before.

I have never cooked an egg or anything before.

@Robusto Exactement.
Oops, without the accent.

I can't hear your accent when you type.

I understand.
That happens to one's ears as one gets older.
@DamkerngT. Very nice!
@Robusto I remember an experiment where we folded regular printer paper into a cup of sorts and boiled water in it over a gas burner.

@Cerberus Glad you like it!

6:12 PM
Always!

So here's a question: If an asteroid 1km in diameter (assume spherical) were to be headed stright for the top of your head traveling 50,000 kph, would it ever actually hit you or would you be vaporized by the plasma generated by the friction between the asteroid and the atmosphere before it could ever land?

Hmmm.
Good question.

Strange question.

The distinction isn't really a practical one, but I'm curious.

Naturally.
Does being vaporized by the shockwave count as hitting me?

6:14 PM
Define "shockwave"—you mean something apart from the impact shockwave?

The air that it pushes forward.

That would be part of it, I think. Maybe you'd be vaporized and blown out of the way before it could ever strike.

Maybe that will already obliterate me before anything else? I don't know.

But a shockwave would propagate at the speed of sound, right? So it couldn't travel faster than the asteroid.

@Robusto I would assume the solid molecules in the asteroid would never touch a part of my body that was still in any way in a recognizable shape.
@Robusto I don't know, would it? Why can't air move faster than sound?

6:17 PM
@Cerberus That seems reasonable to me.
@Cerberus It can. But the air and the shockwave are not the same thing.

Indeed not.
But I'm not sure the same limits as those of sound would apply.
I'm sure a supersonic plane pushes at least some air forward at a speed greater than sound.

You seemed to be conflating the two things. The air (or whatever) might blast you out of the way, but the shockwave would not really be part of that.

Perhaps it is only a very thin layer.
@Robusto I wasn't even thinking of blasting my (whole) body away yet.

I guess it depends on how we define shockwave.

Imagine I am stuck in a hole and the ateroid strikes right on the hole.
Yeah.

6:23 PM
I actually don't think any part of the asteroid that wasn't vaporized would strike any part of you that wasn't vaporized.

Hello Everyone
Is this sentence correct "Remember, I am always an email away"?

6:41 PM
@Robusto Neither do I.
@Kabir Sure! Although spelling e-mail is probably better.

No, email is the preferred spelling these days.

6:54 PM
The whole word is ugly enough as it is; let's not uglify it even further.

How about eeeeuuwwwmail?

Better.
I hate the stuff so much.

I'm crushed. I thought you kept your emails from me in a special container.

E-mail is like the hairs and fatty sludge that accumulate in your bathroom drain: it stinks and there is always more.
Present company excepted, of course.
I have printed and framed all your e-mails.

Thank you.
@Cerberus I never knew about those.

7:00 PM
No?

My bathroom drain is pristine, naturally.

One half of e-mail is useless junk that you wasted years of your life on to read. The other half is people nagging you to do stuff.
@Robusto And do enjoy keeping it in that state?

I don't take showers to get clean. I take them because they feel good.
Speaking of which: bike time! Indoor bike today, sadly. But I have to do it.

I only really enjoy a shower when I'm cold.
Hmm too bad.
Perhaps I should go out and run, too.
It's below zero...
At least it hasn't been raining, so no frozen puddles to slip on.

@Robusto You never emailed me.

7:08 PM
> MAN PROPOSES MARRIAGE STANDING IN A HEART MADE OF IPHONES, STILL GETS TURNED DOWN
> Apparently, according to local reports, the love-struck guy spent the equivalent of $95,000 on 99 iPhone 6 smartphones, and proposed to his girlfriend while standing in the middle of the carefully arranged iPhone-heart, holding a bunch of flowers. The answer was no.

I will never make a marriage proposal like that. It's supposed to be a private affair, not a public one.

> There are no details on why she turned the iPhone fan down, but it could be she preferred Android

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Which country?

He should have given me the money instead.

7:12 PM
I think @Cerberus should make a heart out of iphones when he proposes.

I think one should just pull out one's heart to make a proposal.

@WillHunting That's what that guy did!

If I were a girl, I would reject him too. It's a waste of money, what he did. He must be a millionaire though.

7:26 PM
Hello again @Mahnax!
@Mahnax Maybe you will feel better if you change your picture, lol.

7:45 PM
@WillHunting Of course. People like that are insane.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Disgusting!!

@Cerberus Yes, insane like me, lol.

@Cerberus Prove your love by doing something challenging!

Differently insane.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 My love is not great enough to touch evil!

I didn't read that far. Looked boring, so I skipped it.

Q: What is "a pillowcase splitter"?

Remo.F.BadeLyrics from Case Kisser by Skinned Teen You're gonna be a pillowcase splitter. Break it out Break your pillow every night... What is "a pillowcase splitter"? and what does it mean by "Break it out Break your pillow every night"? Thanks in advance

Surely there is a good reason to close this.
I should known if I waited a couple minutes FumbleFingers would come up with one.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Doubtlessly.

8:20 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 If only it were 100 iPhones! Maybe then!

@Mitch If he really loved her he'd've gotten 100 of every variant of iphone

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 all playing a symphony together, one note each

@Mitch All arranged in a grid, each screen showing one pixel of a movie

Not what I expected. They're each playing basically Guitar hero. I want the collective hive mind of Apple to be playing it, otherwise the Singularity can STFU.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 nice... I feel bad for him having to touch play on all those iphones and make sure they all synch up
that would be true love.

@Mitch He should write an app for that

8:45 PM
Hello.

@Mitch it's a traap
