Why not!? :)

or maybe wait for ELL to get out of beta?
all the advanced questions & answers would have to be moved to "EnglishOverflow"

@Arrowfar I found this: meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/4356/…;. You could get a bit of those feelings back in 2013. :)

user116848
Oh, thanks!

@IceBoy Though I'm not sure how the majority will take that, I think it's a nice name. :)

Q: Are we getting hats this year?

Andrew LeachA question on Meta.GD.SE asks whether they want to participate in a Hat-Fest like ELU did last year. I guess that because there isn't a similar question here, it might actually be a foregone conclusion that ELU will get them again. Or it might not be and it could be that we've been forgotten; o...

It was called Winterbash.

6:04 PM
the abbreviation: ELL is too similar to ELU

@AndrewLeach I hope we will have it again this year. :)

Q: Renaming ELU to EnglishOverflow

Ice BoyMay I suggest the following name changes: I think English Language Learners (ELL) should change its name to English Language & Usage (ELU) and ELU should become EnglishOverflow, just like MathOverflow is for professional mathematicians, what do you think of this logical unification of the two ...

7:12 PM
I was searching for something and found this----> (grammarly.com) which looks pretty much like SE English site :)

user116848
I was searching for 'would rather'

user116848
So I guess English SE is in competition with sites like this and wordreference.com.

user116848
But none of these sites have a good chat option like here.

user116848
later!

user116848
:-)

7:16 PM
later pal

8:16 PM
@Cerberus I was really hungry.

9:09 PM
@Mitch How unfortunate.
I ate too many crisps.

Greetings
What is the correct way, "it is never ... " or "it never is ... "? In general I use the former version, not the latter one. There are some exceptions?

Both are usually possible.
It never is is a bit more rhetorical.
Never is it is even more rhetorical.

@Cerberus OK, thank you.

But maybe it depends on context as well.

It always is context dependent. :-)
It is always context dependent.

9:20 PM
@IceBoy OK :-)

@Chris'ssis :-)

9:50 PM
@IceBoy There are going to fight you tooth and nail. You should consider this prima facie evidence that you are correct.

Thanks :D @tchrist

A: "my friend" vs "a friend of mine"

cartmanI like girls with big fat titties. I like girls with big vaginas. So come on down to South Park and meet some friends of mine.

Haha.
Voted to delete.

delete the haters

10:00 PM
@IceBoy The haters are piling it on.
My guess is that these are the cliquish in-group who enjoys who messed up and misleading the situation is, the one who enjoy seeing SE failing at serving the community.

Is tooth and nail commonly used?
I've never heard it before.

@JohanLarsson I brush my teeth more often now.

And honestly, I have no sympathy for people who want things to fail, not succeed.

@WillHunting progress! I'm proud :)
@tchrist ^4

Tooth and nail is an old saying.
I don't think the younger generation uses it.

10:05 PM
Lead, follow, or get out of the way: those are the only choices. Snarkily sabotaging the very troupe who are actually trying to get somewhere is not something any organization should long tolerate.
Cry havoc and release the hounds of yore, Smithers!
I’m sorry sir, they let slip their leads last night when the trolls attacked.

Give it 24 hours before I accept your answer @tchrist :-)

I want guard-lions.

Me too.
And a dragon.

A lion beats a dog any day.

No wimpy three headed dogs allowed :D
Just kidding pal

10:12 PM
@tchrist A polar bear beats a lion.

@IceBoy But it won't really be for professional linguists, right? So I don't really agree.

@JohanLarsson Aquatic non-canids need not apply.

Release the dragon on the nay sayers.

The dragon? lol

Fire breathing dragon.

10:14 PM
I don't think english overflow will ever be at the same level as math overflow
What I propose is that the current elu and ell merge into elu and serve both communities.

But it will set a pattern for names.

I really don't see the difference between ell and elu.

L ---> U

But I think this will never happen.
Because Jeff Atwood wanted ELL. I did not want it, like Robert Cartaino.

See above.

10:17 PM
But, but ah nvm.

No passing fancy, that.
And they’ll beat a tatoo at twenty to two.

@IceBoy Just look at the current ELU. How many are "research level" questions? None.

@WillHunting There’s all bloody SWR that should be closed with extreme prejudice.
They are all gimmes.
They are lazy, useless, nonquestions that do nothing to improve the site, nor make the world a better place.
It is become the domain of predatory vampires and rabid trolls.

I also find the segregation into Unix and Linux, Ask Ubuntu, Superuser, etc quite stupid.

They’ll have your tongue for that, lad.

10:19 PM
Now all 3 sites can have an Ubuntu question. There is no one central place to look.

That way they can have three times as much spamvertising.

Looks like you had to be born in the 1930's to be a true "tooth and nail"-er :-)

I will pull out all your teeth and nails, lol.

Ouch :-(

Maybe this whole SE should just close down, lol.

10:23 PM
Or this our current millennium.

Thanks pal.

@IceBoy They hatez youz foreverz!!!!

They should just have the chat left.

And no one argues against. They just dingledork you.
Those who will neither lead, follow, nor get out of the way shall be crushed into bloody paste beneath the jackboots of the soldiers of tomorrow marching forever into the future. May their poppies be orange ones.

Ok, I'll accept the answer on Saturday night and watch the nay sayers burn with the fever.

10:28 PM
Saturday night fever?

The one and only.

Maybe I will add an opposing answer there and see how many votes it gets.

:-O
Will Hunting on ignore
Just kidding pal.

3 more months to get Xmas hats again.

Will we get those sleds too?
For the avatars.

10:35 PM
@IceBoy I just had a thought that V-moy=Garbage Collector, lol.

Nah
Garbage collector = oh my ghost
@WillHunting
But, you could be right. Either way who cares. As you say "it's just somebody on the internet" :-)

Q: Why do Americans call hair that turns white "gray hair" not "white hair?"

AnonymousI searched on YouTube for the reason why hair turns white then I found that Americans called it gray hair not white hair. In my opinion, its color is white so I don't understand why they call it gray hair.

No idea why this question survived for so long. It's based on not one misconception but two.
First, it's called gray hair in every language at all.
Second, you totally can say white hair to emphasize the fact, or even shining white hair or bright white hair or what have you. And again, you can do that in any language.

@RegDwigнt Third, white is only the most extreme manifestation of graying hair. Few ever get all the way there.

This is basically like asking, why do Americans say "car" to mean "car". In my opinion, it should be called "wheelything".

@RegDwigнt Well said.

You're confusing apples and pomegranates.

You can only confuse grenades once.

11:20 PM
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: A grenadier threw a grenade on Grenada while sipping grenadine (no tags)
I confused them four times.
QED

Grandiloquent.

I could do more, but my work here is dun.

11:24 PM
So . . . are we ramping up to WWIII yet? Current thinking is for NATO to put "trip-wire" divisions into Ukraine, because Putin wouldn't dare attack then.

Meh.

Have we learned nothing from the lead-in to WWI?

Rhetorical question is rhetorical. And the answer is oh look a doggy.

So we put ourselves one step away from the brink instead of however many steps we're away from it now.

But at least the American military industrial complex finally got to bully everyone into spending a friggin 2% of their monies on weapons.

11:26 PM
@RegDwigнt That's not rhetorical. I really want to know. And we should ask questions like that, because the consequences are worth considering.
@RegDwigнt Yeah, well, if we only spent 2% of my money on weapons I'd be OK with that. It's more like 20-30%.

You'll get there. Give Putin time.
I mean, you'll get everyone to spend 30%.
Anyway. My personal honest answer is that I have no idea why the hell NATO is still a thing. So whatever they do is complete waste of everything to me.

Seriously, I personally spend way less than 2% of my money on weaponry. Even if you count silverware.

I mean, if someone starts bombing, say, France or Italy, whatchathink, Germany will sit on its hands if there is no NATO to tell it not to sit on its hands?

I'm trying to think of things I have that can be used as a weapon. There are some baseball bats left over from the kids' Little League . . .

@Robusto Lee Greenwood LPs.

11:30 PM
Just finished reading that. Pretty scary.
@RegDwigнt Don't have any of those.

Too bad. Most powerful weapon.

I prefer to stand back from the brink. So no Lee Greenwood LPs.

Wise choice.

If I get some, then my neighbors will perceive a Lee Greenwood gap and they'll have to get some. Sooner or later, it's Armageddon.
@RegDwigнt Huh-huh . . . she said kock.

And I'm proud to sit on a fat pale horse, where at least I know I'm free.

11:33 PM
Does it have to be fat, pale, and a horse?

Them's the tastes of the Lee.

Let's outlaw country music, whaddya say? This whole freedom-of-speech has to stop somewhere.

His brother Bruce would have preferred a skinny orange tiger. With a fist.

Enter the dragon, not the tiger.
Wait, that came out wrong.

@Robusto but the Dixie Chicks have been outlaws forevah.
Certainly after speaking up against Dubya.

11:35 PM
*fo'evah

Sorry, my intrusive Rs are rintrusive.

If I have to put on some Lee, I guess I'd rather have Geddy than Greenwood.

Geddy makes me giddy.

Hopefully it was a ManU one.

Just got my blood test results back. Total cholesterol is a little over 100. I guess that's good. HDL at 60.
All that biking is paying off.
And of course now winter comes.

Well done.

11:40 PM
Is that in Fahrenheit?

No, that's fully metric.

Winter is still far away!

This is the first time I see a cholesterol figure. It means nothing to me.

Greater than 200 is the danger zone
Some people are over 300 and even 400. Heart attacks waiting to happen.
@Cerberus It was 10 C here last night. Already it's too cold to wear my normal biking togs.
I need to get full-fingered bike gloves and wear long-sleeves, maybe a jacket. And then, of course, there's the whole question of [shudder] tights? I'm not ready to face up to that whole question yet.
@RegDwigнt Cholesterol results are given in mg/dL, so fully metricized.

Well, tough luck. I only just got used to Fahrenheit and then this.

11:47 PM
Schade.

It wouldn't much help me if they were in rods per hogwartses, or in burusu per burasosu.

How about hectares per helltare?
Or helters per skelter.

@Robusto That's what follows with the pale horse.

Why are you still up and not out drinking?

Why would I get out to drink?
And are you posting this from a bar?

I'm too old to hit the bars. What's your excuse?

I'm too handsome.
I mean drunk. Drunk. I mean drunk. Stupid keyboard.

Too drunk to go out drinking? There's a bit of a conundrum.

It's a continuous Möbius of a conundrum.

11:54 PM
The Kuh says möö.

> How should I thank someone for considering my job application?

Blow jobs are always appreciated.

If they hire you, by working hard. If they don't, by ignoring them.
Speaking of considering, it's amazing how many questions are considered to be about English.

Quite inconsiderate, in my opinion.

In my opinion, you should call it car, so I don't understand why you call it inconsiderate.

11:58 PM
@Robusto Hmm 10C at night is not so bad? That means it could be 20 by day?

Sorry, I meant wheelything. You are confusing me. You must be American.
