In the answer I posted about /z/, my brain somehow turned 2008 into 1998 and 2013 into 2003

I had to edit and fix both dates!

How did I manage that? Stupid brain :-)

It's a good thing I re-read things I wrote and try to find mistakes. 'Cause find mistakes, I do! :-)

12:14 PM
I got a comment from Sawa on my Godzilla (original movie) counter word question. Not surprising, considering he commented on my "Happy Feet 2" counter word question.

@AndrewGrimm え、どこですか

What did sawa say?

I always imagined 匹 to be the basic counter for animals and 頭 to "override" it in certain cases, but I don't know if that's a good way of thinking about it

I was very interested to read 非回答者さん's answer

I've learned a lot in the two years I've been on Stack Exchange! But I still have a lot to learn :-)

@snailboat The use of masu-stem, Vmasu as terms for 連用形 is quite unfortunate in my mind. It leads people to think that 食べ comes from 食べます, like in this video here: youtube.com/…

@3to5businessdays I don't use that term myself if I can avoid it

@3to5businessdays Hehe, yikes

I just clicked your link :-)

Oh, another link to that ponderinnihongo blog showed up there…

I am not especially fond of the explanations there

11:17 PM
Yeah, I find them to be pretty questionable. It pains me to see stuff like these getting upvoted so much (sometimes) on reddit
@snailboat About the other link (hm, does markdown work here?) I posted earlier. I'm quite uncomfortable with how the author is referring to い and な as particles. Thoughts?

@3to5businessdays In linguistics, a "particle" is a non-inflecting function word. Since both い and な are part of inflectional paradigms you wouldn't normally call them particles

Anonymous
Most people would agree that い is not a separate word, either

Anonymous
Many people would say, on the other hand, な is a separate word

Anonymous
But in traditional grammar, な is considered part of a 形容動詞

Anonymous
In Japanese grammar, function words are usually divided into 助詞 (non-inflecting, 非活用語) and 助動詞 (inflecting, 活用語)

Anonymous
If you do consider な a separate word, then you'd put it under 助動詞 instead (as a form of 助動詞「だ」)

If you consider both い and な to be the inflecting parts of adjectives, then they would be 語尾

Anonymous
In Japanese grammar, inflecting words are divided up into 語幹 (word root, the part that doesn't change) and 語尾 (word tail, the part that does change)

@AndrewGrimm Ahh, sawa's grudge against Japanese.SE prevents him from commenting on the site itself

Anonymous
That's pretty weird.

Unfortunately, I can't do anything to make the situation better.
