Maybe the second one includes stethoscopes?

votes reset! go go go!

@MattGiltaji Maybe. Not necessarily, in my case. We let everyone see who was nominated. The selection was made after discussion by the moderation team, so there wasn't an "election" persay. Not a public one, at least.
Although I do wonder if an election would change things. I guess then you would have to worry about other contending factors, like maybe a popularity contest sprouting up in the voting...

hello community moderators!

Hello!
We're friendly and don't bite (offer not valid if you're a spammer or troll)

This coming from a dog...

@HyperAnthony If you don't show the results until after voting is over, you should reduce most of the anchoring effect
Anchoring or focalism is a cognitive bias that describes the common human tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered (the "anchor") when making decisions. During decision making, anchoring occurs when individuals use an initial piece of information to make subsequent judgments. Once an anchor is set, other judgments are made by adjusting away from that anchor, and there is a bias toward interpreting other information around the anchor. For example, the initial price offered for a used car sets the standard for the rest of the negotiations, so that prices lower than the...
(no idea who that guy is)

a kind request, if you would: I suspect when discussing communities, the specificities of the people makes a fundamental difference. For this reason, I suspect that while asking general questions (such that google might pick it up) is a good heuristics, don't be afraid of posting the specific community in question.
(eg there's a 1000-mile gap between moderating 4chan, and SO)

@SilverDragon does 4chan even have mods?

@MattGiltaji Thanks Matt, I'll give that a look

Matt, yup
Matt, recall "Mods are asleep, post ponies" :)

@animuson

wow, still no one's put their head on the figurative Chopping Block of Moderators Moderation.

@MattGiltaji If I recall correctly, mods are actually banned if they reveal that they are a mod. Then again, that was from a few years ago, so that may have changed since then.

@Undo Community won, again. xD

@Undo If only Shog weren't a Community Manager. He'd be perfect because his head is already chopped off.
10

@Undo Do I dare?

12:12 AM
DO EET

cmon guys, don't steal all my stars so early

We should ask Aarthi to come be our overlord.

@MattGiltaji we all want badges for 10 stars...

@HyperAnthony Essentially, yes
People are going to read our posts and then point out that we don't do as we say
I'm already kinda wanting to delete my account :P
DESTROYING YOURSELF COUNTS AS DESTROYING USERS
@Undo Most of us already have one community to moderate

true

Personally I don't wish to burden myself with a second
ARQADE FOREVAH

I think I could handle it (SR small), but I'm not gonna volunteer. Someone's gonna have to poke me with a very sharp stick if they want me for some reason.

Clearly what we need to do is give everybody a diamond
15

imagines chaos
That'd be interesting.
Imagine how long spam would last.

I do wonder what it would like to moderate two sites, but I think I already know

"As a moderator, how do I handle a community where everyone is a moderator?"
11

12:20 AM
Come on, we don't have a [pii] tag yet?

@badp perhaps a private Q&A sites for (SE) moderators, full privileges for everyone no diamond needed
but that might be a bad idea

@Mujahidمجاهد i thought I saw something like that get declined on MSO

@badp Yes, yes indeed. The best people to moderate the moderators are the moderators!

This is making me mad. I submitted a reduced test case and that got fixed, but when I applied the code to my main code, it doesn't work.

Well, the usual process of closing/reopening questions would be screwed up if everyone had a supervote.

12:23 AM
But who moderates the moderators of Moderators?

@MattGiltaji I can understand why

@3ventic Themselves!

@3ventic I said it before, rorschach

@3ventic The moderators of Moderators are moderated by the moderators who participate in Moderators but are not moderators of Moderators themselves.
23

oh god

12:24 AM
That's way too many moderators.

make it stop!

@3ventic moderators?
:P

The prophecies were true, this is a nightmare

Making Shog dictator will solve everything.

Now I'm completely confused.

12:25 AM
@3ventic Good. Now the moderators will help clear up your memory.

@Undo Social security numbers pasted on the wall? Remind me never to read a story you write.

I had to think of something!
Hey, I've seen worse at schools!

Reminds me of the movie 2012.

@3ventic gif > png!

@El'endiaStarman JPEG > GIF > PNG (FTFY)

Animated PNG > everything else

@3ventic No, BMP!

:16853313 I saw that!

all this removed stuff

12:28 AM
Just a little cleanup, move along folks ;)

i alt tabbed at the wrong time ><

Cleanup of the cleanup is similar to moderators of the moderators, no?

I'm gonna whack you with something :P
4

@Undo A giant S?

@hichris123 yes

12:30 AM
@Undo Ewww, don't whack me with a moderator. That's gross!

... okay then :P

I don't know how to respond to that one :)

I've done my job, then. :D

12:50 AM
It would seem people like hypothetical situation
(not that that is bad)

No delay at all

@3ventic ...?

@hichris123 timestamps

@MattGiltaji do we want an election tag or just selection? The one is a type of the other, but does it merit its own tag?
@Jamal "solve" is a strong word. But it would at least affect everything, and be a hoot to watch.

1:42 AM
The Ban Hammer!
That was quick :)

@MonicaCellio this was a riff on an earlier comment

moderator-selection and moderator-elections will be interesting tags. They only differ by moving the "s" to a different spot.

@MattGiltaji oh, missed that.

http://moderators.stackexchange.com/tags/technical-assistance
http://moderators.stackexchange.com/tags/tools

Can we get these two synonymized?

> Don't forget you can choose this as the accepted answer by clicking the check mark.
Yes, Stack Exchange...I know.

@El'endiaStarman Isn't blue the color for “new users”? Wondering…

2:00 AM
@TimWolla hmm?

@hichris123 I'm talking about the username color in chat!
I'm pretty sure the blue ones don't know about the accepting ;)

:P
(well, if you're a moderator and you don't know what accepting an answer is... :P)

Blue actually indicates chat moderators, @TimWolla

@TimWolla Ahhh...ha ha. ;)

@Seth I think he knows that... ;)

2:02 AM
@Seth I am aware of that : -)

blue chat names wield the diamond, somewhere on stackexchange, but everywhere in SE chat

Gonna head to bed now, though. It just passed 4 am here in Germany.

Ah.
I guess I'm missing a joke then ;)

@Seth Black simply looks more classy.

hehe

italic black looks even better. :P

@hichris123 Bach in black! Wait, that's germanic, not italic. Never mind...

@FEichinger You should see the mod-only rooms. :P Though I admit those are special cases.

Can I pweese get my account unmerged? I want 100 rep here. And global notifications. And there are complaints that I'm multiplying.

user15026
@bjb568 A lot of that we can't directly help you with.

Not you, apparently I need a dev.
But you can help me poke them.

user15026
@bjb568 Not really any more than you can, really, here.

3:30 AM
WHY??????!?!?!?!?!?!

Because reasons.

@bjb568 You have 4.9k rep on SO, didn't you get an association bonus?

His SO account isn't found.
huh, there's some weird stuff going on between Chat and SO

@Undo No kidding...

user15026
The best you can do is contact SE, and if you've done that, and mentioned stuff on meta, I think that's the best anyone can do.

3:34 AM
@AshleyNunn Done that. Another user did meta.

user15026
And we can't really help you here.

Nooooo! Mooooo! oink

@GiantCowFilms I'm going to assume the answer you self-deleted had an upvote countered (in score, but not in reputation) by downvotes.

Anyone keeping up to date with the Stack Overflow Academy proposal?:

Stack Overflow Academy

Proposed Q&A site for programmers who want to learn how to ask good questions on Stack Overflow

Currently in definition.

I thought of a great example question, in my not-humble-at-all opinion: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/72987/stack-overflow-academy/…

@Cupcake I think that will be too limited
we would often get questions saying, "am having this question, where should I post"

Hey all, about this topic here moderators.stackexchange.com/questions/278/…
Would you regard that as SE-centric, as the answer certainly is?

2 hours later…
12:15 PM
No. It reads more like it is using SE as an example, even contrasting it to other types of communities.

@HarryLudlow what do you mean 'SE-centric'?
oh wait, this site is not just meant to be about moderation on SE?
how'd I miss that one :)
on the same theme:
I'm speaking from my experience on SE, I've no idea how chat works in other communities and a question about every internet community would surely be 'too broad', wouldn't it? — Jack Douglas 10 secs ago

1:08 PM
good morning
someone else said what I said (and a little bit more) and got 2 upvotes, I have 3 down votes? and no comment as to why, and my comment asking for explanation was deleted?

@Malachi As for "why the downvotes" comments, they're pure noise and shouldn't be posted. Link to your answer?

@Malachi that's almost an on-topic question for main isn't it?

@JackDouglas you know you may be right, should I include the post and answer in my question or make it completely Generic?
-2
A: What should I do about a moderator who dislikes me and lets that affect how he manages the site?

MalachiI assume that there are other moderators on the site that handle things when said moderator isn't online, I would suggest that you become sneaky. By this I mean, don't be online on that site during the time that the said moderator is online, at least for a while, long enough to make said moderat...

sorry didn't see the "Link to your answer?" until just now
@Doorknob how can we decide what a good post is if no one will comment as to why the bad posts are bad? isn't that the point of Private Beta?

@Malachi Speculation, but possibly because your answer essentially amounts to "work around the system instead of following it"?

2
A: What should I do about a moderator who dislikes me and lets that affect how he manages the site?

Nick WildeWhat options you have are very specific to the community - both written (and unwritten) rules/guidelines and technologies being used. Depending on the rules some options my be against the TOC/other policies that you have agreed to so check first. Depending on the technologies not all of these opt...

1:15 PM
@Malachi Yes, but posting a "why the downvotes" comment does not help achieve this; it just clutters up the comments.

@Doorknob it was the only comment, if it turned into a discussion I would have pulled it here and flagged for a clean up.

@Malachi Still, seeing these types of comments everywhere make us look that much closer to a discussion site or a forum. They aren't useful, so there's no point in posting them.

I edited the answer post removing what I thought might be the cause of the downvotes
@Doorknob that's close to saying that we shouldn't need comments at all, isn't it? on a code review site it lends to saying whether code in an answer works or not, but here what is the point of having comments?

> Use comments to ask for more information or suggest improvements.

@Malachi oh, that answer - I downvoted it, simply because I think "become sneaky" isn't the thing to do. The other answer you mention didn't get my upvote but had some good advice.
I guess I could have commented to that effect, sorry.

1:20 PM
That's the placeholder text in the comment box, but I'd argue that the most important reason to comment is simply to either support or disagree with the post being commented on. (And provide further reasoning to that effect as well, of course.)

@Doorknob a downvote suggests the post needs improvement

@Malachi No, a downvote suggests that an answer is not useful. "Your post needs improvement, but I'm not telling you what" isn't very effective in improving the quality of the post.

@Doorknob exactly my point

That does not support your point of adding noise comments that do absolutely nothing to help your post or the site as a whole.

how is my answer not useful but the other answer, that mentions my answer, is useful (or not not useful)?

1:24 PM
So you're saying to run from the situation? That never works! And if it does it's a sticky situation and uncomfortable for you. — Undo 3 mins ago
this ^^^ pretty much sums it up for me
@Malachi but to answer you specific question, you'll have to find someone who downvoted your answer and upvoted the other (and that's not me)

> I've seen too many instances where a "Why the downvote?" comment poisons further discussion, turning comments into a debate over whether the vote was merited - this is noise, as comments are supposed to be relevant to the content of the post itself.
2

@JackDouglas I am wondering why that answer wasn't downvoted even though it is saying the same general idea as my answer.
we are going in a nice circle.

Wonder why that is

Now that things have settled down a bit, can I bother you all for your opinion on this closed question of mine?

Q: How to handle conflicts with other moderators?

jokerdinoA moderator group generally works as a team and makes decision together. But there can be cases where there is a clash of opinions between the moderators, one of them not agreeing with the other, etc. How to calm the tension in such situations and resolve the situations in the most amicable way,...

because their is a difference between users and moderators. the question is about how a user should handle the situation, there is the Mod side and the user side of the question, a Mod is going to say "Follow the rules and there is no problem" a user is going to say "I am following the rules and contributing to the community, but a certain mod is restricting my contributions" that is what the question states, the answer is what else can you do that is within the rules? avoiding the Mod ....

1:33 PM
It's crazy how many people are in this room.
3

is one of those things that you can do when you have exhausted all other options

1:58 PM
well I can't make the answer worse, right?

@Malachi I haven't voted on your answer. I just left a comment; others seem to be reacting to the "sneaky" thing (which did seem a little "off" to me but it's gone now so whatever), but I'm wondering whether the approach actually works in an asynchronous environment. The other answer seems to be taking a different but related approach: start over (new account) or cloak (new name), as opposed to staying away when the problem mod is active. (I don't know how well that works either.)
One challenge I'm seeing in some answers here is that they sound speculative -- "I would do X" -- where what any SE site really wants to tap into is expertise -- "I did do X, and it had these effects". How do we get more of that?

2:32 PM
@MonicaCellio I changed a lot about my answer, I think that any time you have someone that hassles you on a regular basis this can be used, especially on social networking sites, people will find other things to do when you take away one of their toys.
@MonicaCellio thank you for your response.

2:44 PM
Ooh ooh ooh, I thought of another great example question for the Academy! area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/72987/stack-overflow-academy/…

@MonicaCellio if you flag things while the mod is not online they won't be able to decline it retroactively, unless all the mods are online at the same time and the site is relatively small.

@MonicaCellio It's going to be tough, a lot of what we do is either fairly secret or we want to avoid drawing attention to a situation in the past. Or we don't want to even come close to calling out a user.
2

@Cupcake I can't vote on that that proposal anymore... sorry. that is a good question

@Undo indeed. We have to find some way to share enough information about our actual experience to support what we say, while not violating privacy or stirring up old issues.

which is crazy hard to do, especially on a site so close to 'our own turf'

2:55 PM
Oh, look ... rep cap. Huh.

@FEichinger yup. I signed on this morning to find I'd capped sometime overnight. It's been an interesting start. :-)

3:37 PM
I didn't cap yesterday ;(

@Undo I didn't get my email until fairly late in the day, so I'm surprised I did.

Well I suppose I kind of did, I broke 200 (but since there was an accept in there, I never got to the upvotes-don't-count phase)

3:52 PM
@MonicaCellio you posted great questions Monica, I'm not surprised you capped so fast

@MattGiltaji thank you, and I'm pleased to see you here and contributing good stuff too!

@MonicaCellio I'm not satisfied with the quality of my posts yet, so I'm scouring the internet for things to link to for BIU purposes

@MattGiltaji BIU?

back it up

Wow, we still don't have any nominations in the meta thread. Usually there's like three by now.

4:04 PM
/nominate @undo

@Undo I'm guessing nobody wants to nominate themselves when we know there are so many great moderators around
I know that's why I haven't thrown my name in

@Undo day 1 felt a little early to me for that. I'd like to see how things shake out after a few days before nominating anybody. I don't know if others are doing the same thing or if that's just me.

I think another reason is that no one wants to curse anyone else with the responsibility :P

because you could literally just throw out a ring and make whoever it lands on a moderator
and it would be ok

16 hours ago, by Pops
@AnnonomusPenguin "nominate"? I was just going to open up the users page and throw darts at my laptop screen. Everyone here wants to be a mod, no?

4:07 PM
@Undo eh, dealing with a site full of mods is probably easier than dealing with a site full of Ali and Derfder and Summar etc, right? Plus, if Ali et al show up, we can count on more community support than elsewhere for dealing with them. :-)

true, but I dunno.

@MonicaCellio there will be less issues, but people will be more sensitive when called out on something too possibly

And if we do have a problem mod-on-another-site-user, it's not like you'd really be able to ask about them in TL.

so when things do blow up, they will probably go nuclear fast

yeah

4:09 PM
even if they blow up rarely

@AJHenderson I've just nominated myself

One thing is certain, the chat portion should remain well moderated
5

You'd think :P

I would not have done so if this community were not full of moderators, I am interested in seeing how moderation would be with a site full of mods

@Undo Hey, usually in the other room that doesn't exist people tend to behave :P

4:10 PM
Depends on your definition of that :P

@Undo It works for the Bridge.

Too... many... moderators

Shhhhh... no tears, only diamonds.

@Nick $(".username.moderator").removeClass("moderator")
Fixes everything. In chat, at least.

$(".username").destroy()
Please continue to be surprised by the amount of moderators to be found in a moderator community, it never gets old!
Also are we literally inside a ban hammer right now?

4:14 PM
yeah, it's going to be interesting when someone actually uses it. Fasten your seatbelts.

I have a better idea!
room topic changed to The Room With The Moderators: General discussion for moderators.stackexchange.com. THIS IS NOT TL. (no tags)

@badp Ban-Hammer shaped meeting room :p

hah

Why not just call this room: Moderators Hammer
or something like that

@Mujahidمجاهد The Ban Hammer sounds better in my opinion

4:16 PM
I vote 'Dare You To Troll Us'

Everyone in this room holds a Ban-Hammer

How about "Censorship Central"
2

@Nick yeah, I think it is good too

This room is much easier to name than SR's is :P

@Undo "Codez Sending Warehouse"
"This is where we send you the codez."
(assuming that's softwarerec)

4:21 PM
Surely there are other rooms with moderators.

@AirThomas But are they the room with the moderators?

@AirThomas I think you are underestimating the amount of moderators in here

How about "Student Lounge" after TL
or was that proposed already and I didn't see?

@Mujahidمجاهد it was

I'm not sure I like the school theme; this is more like cat herding

4:22 PM
only in chat though

I suppose "Mod Abuse Heaven" has already been proposed, too? :P

didn't see that one

"This is where monkeys with guns in there hands go to sleep."

"Moderator Lounge"? or should I just forget the word "Lounge" in a room title?

4:24 PM
I'd just try and avoid being similar in any way to the TL
2

@badp can we make a bot that randomly *s out words?

Minimize the risk of confusion.

@AJHenderson pssssh, everybody knows moderators have the dirtiest mouths :P
You can't moderate words you don't know!

@badp don't bunch me in with such mods then ;)

4:26 PM

@badp if you didn't know the words, you would discover them quickly anyway

If this is not TL... what is TL?

TL is not a thing that exists.

just like fight club

This is a thing that exists, so I don't see why it should be like a thing that doesn't!

4:27 PM
@AirThomas Sekret thingy for SE mods that totally doesn't exist, ignore the man in black adding to the message.

@badp shhhhh, don't speak of these sekret things

I have a feeling someone is going to mod abuse that message.
hint hint

I'm at a loss for how to abuse that.

@bluefeet The cat is so far removed from its bag, they're now on separate planes of existence

@badp first rule of TL, don't talk about TL

4:28 PM
Trying to focus on this crap (link includes inappropriate language in a video)

@3ventic Oh, I see. It's r/lounge.SE.

@3ventic I'm sorry

@Mujahidمجاهد ... by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!

@3ventic was that mod abuse to your satisfaction?

Moobot's event log is full of ASCII dicks

4:30 PM
@3ventic you should introduce r3k rules in there :P

@FEichinger ok, I didn't understand what you just said now, but i guess my question would be why?

(If you post something somebody has already posted, you get banned)

I'm technically not a moderator on the channel, but I have full access to 2 of the bots that do most of the moderation
@badp r9k on twitch only prevents the message, doesn't ban

@Mujahidمجاهد It was a reference.

*r9k
@3ventic Oh, so it's already a thing that exists? Cool.
Well, r9k can "ban" you for 1 second

4:32 PM
It's in beta but I haven't seen it fail

it just goes up from there

How about "The Nightmare"
@FEichinger ok :)

4:53 PM
Huh, weird:

Q: How did I vote 41 times today?

Monica CellioAccording to my profile on this private beta, I have voted 41 times today. The site is only two days old, so this isn't some accidental mis-allocation of previous votes -- 80 should be the maximum number of votes for the life of the account, but I have apparently voted 81 times. I wasn't paying...

5:05 PM
omg, HAX!

5:57 PM
@badp Calling a moderator "literally worse than Hitler" ... gives that moderator a good reason to silence you. Like the Nazis silenced all those Jews, you mean!
I'm onto you, sir.
On to? shrug.

What can I say?

@AirThomas Actually it's “Papiere, bitte!”. Papiere is the plural of Papier.

@TimWolla Whoops; I guess the -n is Dutch.

@AirThomas Google Translate agrees that it is Dutch.

@badp ... No.

I have always thought that having the ability to speak, read, write and understand any human language would be a great superpower. But until such time as everyone is handed the superpower of their choice, I'm pretty much stuck with English.

6:34 PM
this room was so lively yesterday... what happened?

@MattGiltaji have you ever heard the saying: "First day is a rabbit, second day is a turtle, third day is a snail"?

@Mujahidمجاهد not until right now

@MattGiltaji perhaps because I just made it up :D
it was encouraged by another saying, but I couldn't remember it so I just made something up

@Mujahidمجاهد that explains why I couldn't find it in google :D
