Okay people, welcome to Alternate Blue Room.

Hi :)

Oy!

Whoop

yay mod flood

6:21 PM
Eeeek! So much blue!

user15026
I am...unsurprised.

It's like The Assembly all over again

Hi guys. I'm a moderator.

@Undo yeah, I suppose this will probably be the new room with the most blue users in it that isn't an SE.mod only room

They say I am a mod on Ask Ubuntu.

6:24 PM
@ThomasOwens Really???

Hi everyone

@ThomasOwens I just always figured the blue name meant you were a smurf

@3ventic You're not blue! kicks

I think he's a scrub.

@3ventic hi
@TimWolla also hi

6:25 PM
i'm not blue
ha ha

Moderating a 75k-user Twitch chat :p

I'm actually really glad to see non-blue users early on too
4

Oh god this room is so blue.

@AJHenderson We love you too.

@nhinkle Says the blue mod with a blue avatar.

6:34 PM
> I am would like to be modrator. I have many good skill for to delete and questions. If ban user, that good, but user have to go. Please do the needful to vote for me.

@nhinkle Your election pitch on SU?

@terdon I did in fact post that on SU in the most recent election as a test post. I think I was testing if mods are able to nominate themselves if already a mod.
I promptly deleted it.

Oh god. "Do the needful" ... I knew that one would stick around.

@AirThomas do you have a doubt about doing the needful?

@nhinkle Ah, I remember that, there was a meta post about it I think. Yours presumably.

6:36 PM
@nhinkle I'm just remembering a recent meta post somewhere that ended that way. I think it was a reopen or undeletion request.
But it turns out it's a common expression. TIL!

Q: Need my points back

SteveI made my own answer at one place - What is the difference between JDK and JRE? and copied it to another - Java SE 6 vs. JRE 1.6 vs. JDK 1.6 - What do these mean? Both answers were deleted citing plagiarism. I want one answer (first one) to be un-deleted. My answer adds useful info to the questio...

That's the one.

@AirThomas It is, but only in Indian English.

@nhinkle We could freeze it so only blue people talk here.
:P

@AirThomas is that a new downvote record?

@Nick I really doubt it.

6:40 PM
@hichris123 that would just be mean.

My chat fails to load gravatars for some reason

jcolebrand has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

connection timed out
something is wrong with the gravatars

@Nick [status-norepro]

Problem exists between @Nick and gravatar.

6:43 PM
@AirThomas yup its happening on other rooms too hmmmm
Now it loaded!

Posted my first answer.

@Jamal Posted my first question and answer :)

Wah, did I just receive the first downvote of the site. O_o

@jokerdino Congratulations!

@jokerdino If so, then I just cast the first one ;p

6:47 PM
I casted the first downvote on the site then :D

Which one of you are lying.

@MadaraUchiha I've made my first edit, too. ;-)

Well okay I cast a VtC
which usually comes with a free downvote but I might be wrong

Anyway, @jokerdino, you are doing it wrong
:P

6:48 PM
Boo. You are all literally hitlers. Burn in a fire.

I prefer to think of us all as literally an aggregate Hitler.

What is it with you people and bandying Hitler around so lightly?

Like Voltron.

Voltler

The first time this image has been shown in public:

6:51 PM
@nhinkle lol :) Who's the one with the hat? Is that shlck?

Is there usually this quick a flurry of activity on a private beta launch, or is this demographic just unusually stacked with active diamonds?

@terdon old image. That's @studiohack.

user61230
@AirThomas Both.

Ah, right.

@AirThomas I think my IRL productivity for the day has now evaporated

user61230
6:53 PM
The committers constitute a population who are actively on Stack Exchange, but there's also just a natural flurry of activity when a site kicks off.

it's tempting to anonymously post some spam to this site, like throwing in slab of meat into a tank of starved piranhas
8

@JohnB but you can't post anonymously.
Not until next week
YOUR DASTARDLY PLAN, FOILED
YOUR EVIL MACHINATIONS, UNWORKABLE

crap

yeah, I thought of trolling the "is this user a troll" question
but hit infinite recursion and decided against it

@MattGiltaji hahaha
that would be better if it was a question on meta
then it would doubly infinitely recurse

6:59 PM
ratio ♦ vs non-♦: 20/8

My first answer.
This chat room should be called The Ban Hammer.
11

@AJHenderson if that happened, my stack might overflow
and I would need to exchange it for a new one

room topic changed to The Ban Hammer: General discussion for moderators.stackexchange.com (no tags)

@nhinkle dang it, you got there faster than me

lol

7:01 PM
YES

@ThomasOwens the badge icons should be hammers too

@MattGiltaji wut?

So tell me... how am I not "banned" if I had a message chat-flagged and nuked by Stack Exchange?

when we graduate, the badge icon shape should be a ban hammer

The only question left...what is the hammer? youtube.com/watch?v=t7bdr6fjg-k ?

7:02 PM
@hichris123 because diamond
3

@Undo But there's not even anything on my annotations page!

huh
Maybe it doesn't even try

@Undo as Undo is well aware of
@hichris123 I think if you have a diamond it doesn't even process it

@hichris123 did you change your chat parent? You aren't blue

ssup

user61230
7:08 PM
@casey I'm seeing blue

@casey @hichris123 is blue
wait, now he's not

He's not. His chat parent got changed to Tex.SE

user61230
Refreshed, and now he isn't blue, nevermind

/me flags hichris

7:09 PM
@AJHenderson this is my new favorite site

I win!

New feed items? Never seen that before... I never leave my chat comfort zone though. :P

what % of users in this chat room are in the set { TL ∪ Tavern-on-the-Meta }?

@animuson chat messages from RSS feeds
you can even name the bots that post the feed
with negative users
@casey I'm not often in Tavern, though I stop by occasionally

What is Tavern on the Meta

7:12 PM
@AJHenderson bot should be named "Possible Troll"

@MattGiltaji that or SPAM BOT

Oh. The chat room. nm.

@ThomasOwens its a place I joined one day to see where a frivolous chat flag originated and forgot to close the tab.

or perhaps TotallyNotARobot

I'm back, and I should be blue again.

7:14 PM
@hichris123 I see blue!

hmm, I was going to comment I must be slipping since I didn't have a starred comment yet and then realized I did

(post-refresh)

reminds self not to do 'testing' again

I guess I should pay more attention to stars

@hichris123 I was worried you were going to start missing out on those awesome chat flags

7:15 PM
@hichris123 haha, yeah, the reset takes a bit
kind of a pain

@casey chatflags? Where?

Are non-mods allowed to lurk in here? :P

@Mahesh They are!

No! ;P

At least I am allowed…

7:17 PM
@Mahesh It is a public room

4 votes in 2 mins are we reading questions?
2

If you can sneak past the troll under the bridge...

for a normal SE site (though currently in closed beta)

Jk, I know it's a public room. :P

@Mr.Alien whatever for?
isn't this circlejerk.SE?
4

7:21 PM
Looking that way a bit.

is tempted to ask a tool recommendation question on Mods.SE

Baba ji!

see the size of the questions description, hardly anyone could read that all out in 2 mins

Was it ever decided whether this site is going to encompass community building more broadly, despite sticking with the "mods" name?

0
Q: Should I step down as a moderator?

bluefeetMy priorities have changed and I don't have as much time to contribute as a moderator. Should I become a normal user or just moderate when I have time?

RUMOR TIME!!!

7:25 PM
@animuson Obviously pregnant.

@AirThomas Per Area 51, yes: "Beta Q&A site for people building, administering, managing and cultivating digital communities"

I read all these questions and I want to answer “it depends what kind of community you're running and what kind of tools you have at your disposal”
A lot of questions are underspecified and clearly written to be first to post something, rather than because the asker cares to get a useful answer

Yeah, some more specifics in the questions would be helpful.

I might just pull an @animuson
2

We only have one of him, please don't pull too hard.

7:29 PM
@Pops if you pulled hard enough, you would have two of him

user61230
We'll have to see where it goes, but it may be possible that questions without context aren't reasonably answerable...

@MattGiltaji Yeah, but the utility of each would be drastically reduced.
Is anyone in here right now a mod anywhere other than on SE sites?

user61230
I'm an IRC mod

@Pops define 'site'

I'm an admin on a clan forum. :P Does that count?

7:32 PM
@hichris123 Whoops, meant to edit that out.

so many questions... so little time

@Pops I'm moderator of a forum... not SE

@animuson sure

This is what I get for deciding to change my wording after I'm nearly finished writing the sentence.

when you get between people and their free time, they get rabid

7:33 PM
@Pops You just invalidated all of the answers to your question! Rollback time!

And, cool, thanks for participating in this totally unscientific one-question straw poll thing.

I was gonna ask a question about our spam problem we have there but I couldn't think of a way to word it without making it sound too much like it belongs on Software Recs.

I've been over the years a video game news site mod, an IRCop (technically still am), a game clan leader and/or officer in various clans of various size and a pro-temp mod of two SE sites

@Pops on a few sites, yes

On the up-side, I may have a question for Software Recs.

7:34 PM
looks like I'm late.

@Pops Yes, various places. Why?

I only still actively do moderation on SE though
oh, I also used to do vandalism fighting on wikipedia

@AJHenderson Thank you for your service.

@animuson 25 upvotes and you'll be able to resume voting!

You are the real hero of the 21st century.

7:36 PM
@AirThomas There's been minor, but consistent, worry about this place being super-heavy on SE mods (which is to be expected this early on) so I was curious.

Q: Should moderators be elected for life?

jmfsgWhat are the advantages and disadvantages about having an initial moderator selection and then never renew them (as long as they don't themselves step down) and having periodic elections where all moderators would have to seek reelection?

Am I the only one seeing this as very opinion based?

@hichris123 not as much opinion, but "depends on the community"

@hichris123 I don't see how it's opinion-based, but it's too broad or unclear

@hichris123 what are the advantages of? and what are the disadvantages of? would be better questions

@MattGiltaji I think that's something we're going to run into a lot...

7:39 PM
the way they balance out for any particular community is largely opinion based
but the advantages and disadvantages are concrete and consistent
what we will run in to a lot though is questions where there are multiple correct answers
so it'll be a bit like software recs in that regard
there is almost always more than one way to do things in moderation, but there are good ways and bad ways that are pretty close to objectively good or bad

Half of the questions here are begging for a dozen answers starting with "it depends " or "well at $site we have $policy..."

user61230
I think most questions on this site should require a context for moderation.

user61230
For instance, if you're moderating reddit, you can't just ask "what tools are there?", but "what tools are there for reddit?"

user61230
That significantly limits the number of possible good answers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! bash.org is dead :(

7:45 PM
@Braiam it's ok, www.zsh.org is up

O_O

@Gilles whooosh

Bash is a Unix shell written by Brian Fox for the GNU Project as a free software replacement for the Bourne shell (sh). Released in 1989, it has been distributed widely as the shell for the GNU operating system and as a default shell on Linux and Mac OS X. It has been ported to Microsoft Windows and distributed with Cygwin and MinGW, to DOS by the DJGPP project, to Novell NetWare and to Android via various terminal emulation applications. Bash is a command processor, typically run in a text window, allowing the user to type commands which cause actions. Bash can also read commands from a file,...
The Z shell (zsh) is a Unix shell that can be used as an interactive login shell and as a powerful command interpreter for shell scripting. Zsh can be thought of as an extended Bourne shell with a large number of improvements, including some features of bash, ksh, and tcsh. == Origin == The first version of zsh was written by Paul Falstad in 1990 when he was a student at Princeton University. The name zsh derives from Yale professor Zhong Shao's (then a teaching assistant at Princeton University) name — Paul Falstad thought that Shao's login name, "zsh", was a good name for a shell. The American...

bash.org is not about the program running from /usr/bin/bash/

@MattGiltaji I assure you he knows

Q: What are reliable indicators that a user is trolling rather than an uninformed or frustrated legitimate user?

AJ HendersonIt can often be very difficult to determine if a user is genuinely confused or upset versus simply trying to cause problems for laughs or malice. What are the most reliable indicators that a user is intentionally being difficult?

:(

So, this is a problem:

Q: Am I a moderator or a user?

jcolebrandHow should I behave as a user when I'm also a moderator, especially in cases of inter-user disagreement over content or policy? I have my own reasons for thinking I'm right, of course, but I don't want people to think that I'm going to moderate by fiat when I really just want to have an opinion ...

QUIT CLOSING QUESTIONS DURING DAY ONE!!
EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT
This is the point of day one

Oops, forgot.

user61230
But what if people think the question is too broad or too vague?

@Emrakul EDIT

I see so many chat questions that seem to ignore large chats completely

7:53 PM
go ahead, ask me another variation of that question

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, Jul 25 at 10:27, by rene
@Sumurai8 First burn it with fire...fix afterwards....

The purpose of DAY ONE is to SET THE STAGE.
That means EDIT

should we use stack-exchange tag if we are asking moderating question specifically about se?

@Mr.Alien no

@Mr.Alien theres a meta about that

7:54 PM
@Mr.Alien you should ask that on meta.moderators

a lot of people in here :)

@Mr.Alien I don't think those questions are on topic here.

Q: Do we need separate tags for different sites?

JamalI mostly moderate on SE and a little on another site, so I'm not entirely sure how moderation varies from site to site. Nonetheless, should we have separate tags for the "most common" sites in which moderation is greatly emphasized and sophisticated. For instance, should specific questions abou...

user61230
@jcolebrand I'm not sure I follow your logic. What if there's a question that can't reasonably be edited to make it specific enough to be answerable?

I'm gonna be the first to Strunk & White! plays Pokemon theme song

user61230
7:55 PM
Or, what if someone asks a question to which the only good answer is "depends on how you look at things"?

@Jamal:
> Nonetheless, should we have separate tags for the "most common" sites in which moderation is greatly emphasized and sophisticated.
^ question mark at the end

hmmm, should check on meta

@hichris123 Got it!

@hichris123 Are questions about site-specific policies on topic?

@Pops Can you rename to ?

7:57 PM
@Emrakul The question I posted, do you think it's "too broad"?

And I'm glad Anna fixed the title, too. This is my first time participating in a new site, and I can hardly keep up.

Let's take this on a case-by-case basis, not knee jerk

@Jamal ty

@Jamal it will calm down within a week.

@Jamal Same here.

7:57 PM
@MattGiltaji These questions seem like they'd be a better fit for the site's moderators in general.

It's a pretty crazy beta.

user61230
@jcolebrand My point is somewhat more philosophical - are you arguing that we shouldn't close any questions during day one?

@Gilles Eh, it's still early, I'll just edit. We'll see if that tag keeps getting created. (Although it probably will.)

@Pops lend me a diamond, that way I have a better UX experience :)

@Seth I am glad to have received an upvote on the first day. :-)

7:58 PM
@Emrakul I'm arguing that there is too much of a knee-jerk by the SE mods to close shit because they're used to it.

@Pops I can't create a tag name that only differs by hyphenation, only mods can

@Emrakul the question I posted seemed to be well targeted. It got three good answers.
So, obviously, some people saw the value in it, but you, for example, knee-jerked it like this was an established site. How would you improve the question to make it more SE like?
If the question were "hurr hurr I made a question" yes, ban the hell out of it
