@MaxVernon how do you store 3 weeks, 2 days, 14 hours and 35 minutes as a datetime? 1900-01-24 14:35? Do you see how unintuitive that is?
So yes, I would store start and end time, because usually those values (and not just the duration on its own) have some value. If not, I would simply store an int representing the duration in the smallest granularity I needed. From that I can always use very simple math to move up, instead of weird datetime arithmetic offsetting from Jan 1 1900.

12:54 AM
@MaxVernon remember too that a datetime isn't really accurate to the millisecond. So for a lot of small durations (or long durations that need to be accurate to a very small granularity) it can't hold that anyway.
Whereas if you take your result from some scientific measuring device, and it tells you that it took the electron 245 nanoseconds to go from my finger to my toe, you can store 245 in the database no problem.
And I'll state one more time: the semantic concept of a datetime is that it is a point in time. It is not meant to store an interval or duration. ANSI supports an interval type but it has not yet been implemented in SQL Server. See here, here and here.
I also might have blogged about at least the TIME sin here - but it holds equally true for the other date/time types as well: sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertrand/archive/2009/10/12/…
@Phil no 10.10 update, boo
@Phil never mind, it showed up after I refreshed software update, sweet
@Phil sometimes it doesn't ship "when it's ready" - sometimes it's "oh shit the keynote is today, make it compile, make it compile!"

hello, I need help to unistall a sql-server 2008 r2 instance, it doesnt appear in control panel->Unistall list or in the drop down menu in the the unistal wizard

Hello and Good day!

I would like to ask about security issues.

Is it risky to display all the contents of the database including their column name in a website? Although the data to be present is not on a really nice format (JSON) ?

That particular page will be a dedicated repository site of my data only that is why I present it in a JSON format. Thanks for reading.

A: T-SQL Calculate average value for Duration Field

Aaron BertrandStore duration in seconds as an integer; then average is quite easy. Right now you're trying to take an average of a string converted to a float converted to a datetime converted to a time. If that doesn't sound wrong to you, read it again. Then consider that time represents a point time. What is...

(not that is is a competition ;)

That's great, but it is worrying that greater volume means the average quality of questions is declining. Which it is, IMO.

9:12 AM
@JackDouglas Do you know if the 85% answered result is obtained off the number that includes the closed questions?
@EmilioGort I may be wrong but you probably cannot de-install a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance using SQL Server 2012 de-installation procedure. Go to Programs and Features and find & double-click the SQL Server 2008 R2 item there.

@AaronBertrand Well, I never! Bookmarked. (Thanks.)

@AndriyM Thanks, and glad you liked it.

@AaronBertrand thanks Aaron, I did something similar yesterday... I deleted the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS and remove all reference in the regedit... it's crazy this things no?

11:31 AM
I would have liked to know the .bat, I would have saved almost an hour with "f3->find next" in regedit

This comment says it all: (by a Mark A.):

@AndriyM need to write a new one updated for 2012 / 2014 etc., as it is not just useful for 2008 R2 and it is not just for evaluation edition either. I have a bunch of frankenstein CTPs still sort of installed on my primary VM here and I need to document how to get rid of them without disrupting everything I want to keep.

1:51 PM
It seems I'm no longer notified of rep changes. Has anyone else got this issue?
Nothing comes up searching Meta.SO so far. Maybe I should try Meta.SE too...

@AndriyM notified how?

@Lamak I mean in the top bar, in the Achievements box.

@AndriyM let's see

@AndriyM I had a problem with notification on the android app last week though

2:52 PM
@Lamak Issues with mobile platform apps are probably a separate category, or so it seems from what I hear (don't follow the news closely as I'm not a user myself).

@AaronBertrand is my comment correct here?
The documentation is not clear. I think it means that either a clustered or nonclustered index is created, depending on the statement. Not that you can specify a previously existing index. So, you cannot avoid creating a new index when defining a PRIMARY KEY constraint. — ypercube 1 min ago

@mmarie I may have to rent a car and go down for a weekend?

Yes! You should do this

3:12 PM
@ypercube yes, and Andriy's comment helps clarify further.

3:25 PM
@Zane Or, make the company wine and dine you for an interview. Schedule it for a friday and stay the weekend. Make them pay

@billinkc I haven't even really got an offer atm. I don't even know the name of the company.
I don't think anyone is looking to wine and dine me either lol

@Zane wait. what????

@swasheck I've yet to be wine and dined by anyone ever in my life.

If we tell HR that you could be interested. Have the support of two of your future team members, they could arrange things after a quick once over

@Zane last i heard, you weren't interested

3:28 PM
Devious people have planted the seeds of discontent

staying in minny, close to family was better than being close to @bill
(though @mmarie is good people)

This is true

@swasheck There's a lot to consider.

Besides, someone's got to fill my spot

@billinkc wtf????
retiring?

3:29 PM
@billinkc are you leaving?

<img src=explosion.jpg/>

i want to stay as far away from @billinkc 's "spot" as possible

Gave notice Monday. Same work, different company. 25% pay increase

@billinkc you're trying to convince me to go to a company you're leaving?

@billinkc as long as it's not pragmatic

3:29 PM
Negatory on pragmatic

ok. we can still be distant internet friendcousins
@Zane sometimes people leave and it has nothing to do with satisfaction

I'd still go back to work at our company. They have many good things going for it. This is something that was unsolicited but really, 25% pay increase is something that will pay for my kid's high school or buy a new car

@billinkc 25% is pretty significant

@swasheck obviously. Since I'm currently quite satisfied with my role and considering uprooting my life to KC for a pay raise.

@billinkc what? you quit?

3:32 PM
@Zane you're young. this is an adventure. it doesnt have to be about $$. plus - if i get you to KC then you're an easy sell on Denver

were you tired of not having a desk @billinkc?

@billinkc no open seating policy?
@billinkc 25% increase for a month will pay for a new car?, wow
@bluefeet he wasn't allowed to wear his kilt maybe

@Lamak possibly

@Lamak i've seen him in his kilt. it's not pretty

@swasheck He does to many leg raises in his presentation and he's constantly crossing one leg over the other. Very Disturbing.

3:36 PM
"ever T-SQL'd on coke"

"it's nice"

That was pretty much the whole damn presentation in Chicago.

I am A: getting pretty good at writing string cleaning for SSIS and B: very sick of doing so.

this one is just on the verge of coming to DBA - do you want it?

So I'm thinking Friday the 27th may be when I go down for a visit.

4:00 PM
@Zane Sorry, had a work thing to attend to. My cousin is coming from Oklahoma to visit me that weekend. I am also showing him KC and he is your age, so I guess if you didn't mind maybe hanging out with him for a bit I could make it work.
@Zane Also, my company would totally wine and dine you. We take people to fancy steakhouses and seafood places, and of course BBQ. We paid for a flight, downtown hotel, and lunch for one guy who came from Chicago because he looked promising.
So if you want that, you can have it. I was just holding off on giving our HR guy your name so he wouldn't bother you if you didn't want it.

@mmarie i want that. i mean --- just because i look promising doesnt mean i promise that i'm looking

@swasheck Haha. We really only do project based consulting right now, so we don't hire staight DBAs.
(Project based meaning we come in design your application or BI solution, build it, train IT and business people on how to use and maintain it, then leave. No support)

@mmarie uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. ok ... nevermind ... gonna bypass that one. :)

@mmarie that's discrimination!!

@Zane easier to move around and get paid more $ now than later

4:08 PM
@Lamak that's kinda where i was going with it ;)

too subtle dude
@swasheck So, today is chile's match against spain

i was going to say, "why does sexual preference have to be a factor in all of this"
@Lamak after that showing against NED, i'd say you have quite the chance (unless they're pissed and play well)

@swasheck you should just come to feenix

@Lamak also ... we'll see how the Socceroos do
@bluefeet i saw the SAP training center ... and the Yelp HQ on the little trolley tour

@swasheck well go daddy is here - that's a draw in and of itself, right?
:D

@Lamak I'm going to watch this game. We have a big screen tv and couch in our office with the World Cup games on :-) Chile and Spain are the two countries I studied and worked in during college.

@bluefeet being from Florida, my wife and i kept seeing the dunes and anticipating seeing ocean just on the other side (never leaves you)

My view on the world, always listen to other opportunities. Maybe it will just help you appreciate what you have. Maybe it will inspire you to make your place better. Or maybe it's the kick in the pants you need to move on

@swasheck no ocean here, lots of pools and misters

Grass is only greener over a septic tank anyway

4:12 PM
@bluefeet yup

@mmarie really?, and who are you rooting for?
@swasheck I expect a lose

@Lamak i'm surprised that the socceroos aren't already down 3

I'm rooting for Chile, but I don't think they will win.

@mmarie aaaand we are the same

i want to see chile eliminate brazil ... just to finish the job they started a few decades ago

@bluefeet rookie mistake. always start with cursor

gotta have those

@Kermit seeing as how there is zero chance of me either getting married or having kids. I will be able to move around at any time.

@bluefeet, I did try and actually it works! However, I have 60 databases and I have to union all 59 times! So, I am trying to use an alternate method. Thank you though — poshan 32 secs ago

@AaronBertrand god I wish I still had this example. One of my Devs at Wand gave me a query to get advice how to fix it. It was handed to him by a dev who got fired.
It was a sproc that would grab every row from a 5 million row table and curse through and run 8 different sprocs on each row returned!

Sure, and in case I haven't mentioned it in here recently, if you're buying from amazon, use smile.amazon.com - doesn't cost you anything extra. If you don't like any of the charities shown by default, look for Ocean State Curling. My local curling club would really appreciate it.

smile.amazon.com/… it's ok in this way?

@EmilioGort yeah you just need to set who your charity / non-profit organization is.

5:35 PM
ok..no problem, glad to contribute it

And by all means, choose something meaningful to you and more useful, like cancer, MS, etc.
But like I said, our curling club does appreciate the trickling that comes from Amazon. :-)
(We are trying to build a building, and fundraising is not easy.)

jajaja
what is curling club ?

Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric rings. It is related to bowls, boules and shuffleboard. Two teams, each of four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called rocks, across the ice curling sheet towards the house, a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each end, which is completed when ...

@MaxVernon you shouldn't. He knows how the site is supposed to work.

@Kermit Don't want kids and dislike the idea of getting married.
@swasheck I've incredibly careful about the kids aspect. I almost had a kid once and the relationship didn't pan out. Don't ever want that to be a possibility ever again.

good man

@Zane after having a child, it's very satisfying to due your evolutionary duty

@Zane furry kids here and married
please explain instead of code only
+1 for great answer, but I think for the OP's sake explaining what the variables should relate to would be helpful. I'm not sure it will necessarily be obvious that you're providing the ability to efficiently give the ranking of various date ranges in a single query. So if @BeginDate1 is a month ago and @EndDate1 is today and @BeginDate2 is three months ago and @EndDate2 is today then rank_1 will provide the item's ranking over the past month and rank_2 will provide the item's ranking over the past three months. I'm just not sure the OP would've understood that. — Love2Learn 8 mins ago
yes, please do

@Kermit There are plenty of people doing that. /pass
@bluefeet love having pets. Have no qualms against a long term relationship. The marriage peice does not appeal to me.

@Zane never thought it would have been possible to get married for me. The kids aspect just didn't work out.

6:56 PM
@Zane Cool. Well, let me know whatever weekend you decide. I'm in town every weekend until July 25. And if you would like to be wined and dined, let me know and I can make that happen too.
@Zane Agreed. I haven't completely decided about the marriage part, but in general it is not something I wish to do either. I'm open to changing my mind should I find compelling evidence to the contrary.

@mmarie I wouldn't mind to at least have some info about the position.

That is a generic position post. For instance, we don't expect people to be amazing at ETL and at SSAS and at Excel/PowerPivot. We ask for expertise in at least one area and basic familiarity in the others. If you want to get into other areas of BI, they encourage it, but you don't necessarily have to
Mostly, we are looking for someone who is good at something and has aptitude to be useful.
We could actually use people that are good at ETL and have DBA leanings
but don't want DBA work necessarily
kind of like @billinkc

7:15 PM
@mmarie no, there can't be 2 of @billinkc

@Marian I said kind of like. Also, @billinkc is taking another job that offered him ridiculous amounts of money, so there won't be two of him.
At least not at my company

@mmarie how ridiculous

well, maybe it's only ridiculous to me. He mentioned earlier today is it a 25% pay increase chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/16144715#16144715
And my company doesn't underpay people significantly, at least as far as I know.

@mmarie Well the ETL is pretty much where the majority of my expertise falls.'

@Zane Yeah, that's fine. We need good ETL people who can think

7:29 PM
My report writing skills are impossibly dusty.

@Zane That's fine. We have several people that can do SSRS and Excel already.
You just have to know that those tools exist and be able to figure your way through a really basic report if you need to.
We typically use people where they are strongest unless they ask for something else or they agree when we are in a weird situation with resourcing

interesting. Much to consider. I mentioned this to Wells and they may try and a large raise to get me to stay.

@mmarie oh, so you won't have Bill to entertain you anymore.. Sorry to hear that.

Alright I'm out I have to run some errands this afternoon.

@Marian He has promised me i can still talk to him on gchat. And I will see him as we organize SQL Saturday Kansas City. But I will miss working with him.

7:47 PM
I will miss working with me too

@Lamak WOW!!!!!!!

@swasheck relax, it's only 1st half. Let's see how it goes for the second :).

@Marian true ... but spain looks lost

@swasheck yeah, their defence (including the keeper) never looked that bad :/

Spain has no chance, there must be a miracle..

¯(°_o)/¯
@EmilioGort dont put it that way. you've just jinxed them

8:07 PM
I like Spain, but I think that everyone simply learned how to play against them, and they still insist with their old Barcelona midfield style play (Xavi / Iniesta)
and Chile dont let them take a breather...

U.S. ref ... we'll see how we feel about him later :S
and chile's manager is jacked
@EmilioGort yeah. last cup it was great. 4 years is a long time.
chile looks content to just sit on the 2 goals and force spain into poor chances

8:30 PM
@AndriyM I don't know but I'd be surprised if it included them.
@PaulWhite maybe we should start being more ruthless?

8:45 PM
Chile - Netherlands will be interesting. The 2nd in the group will probably face Btasil.

@JackDouglas Agree, I guessed as much. I was just trying to interpret the figures somehow. We've now got more visits per day than Programmers (which is slightly older), but we've got much fewer answers, and the percentage of answered questions is smaller too.
My guess is potential askers have stopped fearing our site's name sooner than potential answerers.

hmm, that's an interesting thought
otoh prog.se is more opinion based I think, which lends itself to multiple answers

Wow, Spain is out

congrats @Lamak

@swasheck your prevision was right :). Couldn't believe it, as 2 Spanish teams have just played the Champions League final.. but that's probably one of the reasons they played so badly.

9:01 PM
@JackDouglas Yes, our questions are primarily supposed to deal with technical issues, and so technical expertise is very important but not many people have it.

@JackDouglas Indeed. I have found myself being more without-ruth than usual lately.
From what I can gather, Chile beating Spain is quite the upset. Congrats @Lamak

@Marian you're most likely correct
