@JasperLoy Your loss.

Zoe
Lets discuss a topic that will spur imagination and debate. I vote for ice cream.

@tchrist Nah, I am not gay either, lol. I am straight.

@JasperLoy Your loss.

Zoe
Jasper, thou art missing out on the best of both worlds.

@tchrist Haha, this is hard to understand.

2:14 PM
@Zoe So far as we have been able to discern, he’s missing on all worlds.

It comprises the third season finale and the fourth se...

Zoe
All worlds?! But the nine worlds are beautiful! Jasper, what are you doing with your life?!
Or rather, what have you been doing all this time?! Oh dear oh dear.....

9 worlds? What are they? I only know 1 world, lol. My world, by Justin Bieber, lol.

Zoe
NICE COMEBACK
OMG MY MOUSE IS FINALLY WORKING

So is your caps lock.

Every longer grow the comment chains, and ever headier too, but where they’ll land, nobody knows. I almost think that some of these or on the OP could be spruced into Answers.
5
A: Do indirect objects in English always mean "to" or "for"?

tchristNo. There are verbs that take two objects that won’t let you blindly transform this: verb   indirect-object   direct-object into this verb   direct-object   to/for   indirect-object and be left with legal or meaningful sentences. Some of these are: Pardon me my reach. I forgave her ...

2:24 PM
I make it a point to delete all my comments after they have served their purpose. So now I have 0 comments.

For one thing, I don’t think the OP is going to be easily appeased.
He’s rather discursive.

I hate it when people post answers as comments, preventing others from posting answers because they would be too similar.
In such cases, I go past the inertia and post my own answer anyway. It is not plagiarism if I already was going to post the same thing.

Zoe
Simon being Simon being good.

2:51 PM
@Zoe Down with mint-chocolate chip.

@Mitch up with mint choc chip

Zoe
@Mitch Down with Bieber fever
Just kiddin'. Uhm... I'd go with strawberry vanilla, please.

@JasperLoy I hate it when people complain about hating when people post answers as comments. The comment is not an answer and anyone is free to post an answer. I post comments that other people see as answers because (sometimes) I feel the question is not worth a real answer.
@Zoe That is a flavor I do not want.

Zoe
@Mitch 'the question is not worth a real answer' AMEN TO THAT

@MattЭллен You're mad. Or sick. Or both.

2:54 PM
@Mitch You are mad. I am sick.

Unless you're referring to regurgitating.
@MattЭллен I'm mad that you're sick. Get well soon!

never. Mint choc chip 5eva

Zoe
@Mitch I have the flu. Or, a little bit of the flu that should go away soon.

@Zoe The Bieber flu? It's catchy!

@Mitch thanks!

Zoe
2:56 PM
@Mitch You won't wanna catch that.

@MattЭллен Seriously? I mean, they have it available to be sold, but does anybody (of even minimal social standing) even consider it? Isn't it the left over icecream that gets sent in shipping containers to be left on the beach of some starving 3rd world failed nation?
You probably like (ugh) bacon too.

@Mitch no. it's the best icecream
@Mitch of course!

Zoe
@MattЭллен If it's mint choc chip, I wouldn't mind. Choc chip though.... It's basically vanilla + choc chip :/

do you pronounce nutella /nutɛlə/ or /nətɛlə/?
@Zoe dark choc chips improve all icecream

Zoe
@MattЭллен It has to be like real cho chip and not the commercial choc rice type of "choc chip"

3:05 PM
I don't know the choc rice type...

I like vanilla, but in general I don't much like ice cream.
Mint is the worse.

gah! I'm surrounded by people who have different ice cream preferences to me!
my life is over
dies

Zoe
Actually, given a choice between cake and ice cream, I would choose cake!
@MattЭллен oh come on!

Ice cream makes me teeth hurt and mint makes them hurt even more.
I like the flavor just fine, but I'm more of a vanilla, caramel, chocolate, peanut kind of person.

I don't know about mint, but my mum can't handle anything cold on her teeth

Zoe
3:10 PM
@KitFox Oh! Caramel! I love Caramel, too!

She has to let tap water warm up before she drinks it

Yep.
Sounds like me.
Oh. So that's it. I'm your mum and not your brain-twin.

lol
I'd rather we were brain-twins

@MattЭллен /nə'tɛlə/
And I don’t geminate.

@tchrist me too. I was listening to the SE podcast yesterday and it sounds to me like Joel is saying /nu/.

3:24 PM
It never fails to surprise me where mine and tchrist's accents overlap.

@KitFox I don’t know why. I have a northern accent, mainly Inland North but with some traits from realms even more boreal that that one normally carries.

Well, I'm more boreal than that, so I suppose that would explain it.

Urboreal?

Hyperboreal.

hyperbole-er
hyperballad

3:33 PM
Remember that Hyperborea lies close the Cimmeria.
In Greek mythology the Hyperboreans (, ; ) were mythical people who lived "beyond the North Wind". The Greeks thought that Boreas, the god of the North Wind (one of the Anemoi, or "Winds") lived in Thrace, and therefore Hyperborea indicates a region that lay far to the north of Thrace. This land was supposed to be perfect, with the sun shining twenty-four hours a day, which to modern ears suggests a possible location within the Arctic Circle. However, it is also possible that Hyperborea had no real physical location at all, for according to the classical Greek poet Pindar, :neither by...

Ugh. Stupid flag queue

@KitFox I thought the LQ and NAA flags get funnelled into the LQ review queue now.
So you should have less work.

Except that no one agrees on LQ or NAA.
So I have more work.
Also, there's no more auto-protecting.

Oh crud!

Also, billions of users seem to think that every closed question should go to ELL.
So I'm pretty much rejecting those out of hand these days.

3:48 PM
Yes, I didn’t want to answer the Meta question about that, but the reason there should not be an auto-migrate is that the community itself is not yet sufficiently savvy to make good calls there.
And might never be; I don’t know.
I try to remember to at least consider protecting any question that I cast a delete vote against a rep=1 user’s lame non-answer. I don’t always do so, but often do.

And then a hundred flags about comments. I've never seen so many comment flags.
And they aren't sufficiently anything, so I have to investigate every one of them.

That seems weird. It’s not like we’re getting more super-more comments, just super-more comment flags then.
Or maybe we are getting more comments. I don’t know.

Right. Super-more "hey that user said something that disagrees with me"
"so they are offensive"

Wow.

Or whatever.
"This joke this person made is not constructive!"

3:51 PM
Contradiction != Offending remark

"Too chatty!"
OMG, please stop.
But it's rarely ever something where the user has clearly been dickish. Always requires reading the whole chain and sometimes half the rest of the question.
Then I end up purging most everything.
Then I get criticized for censorship, usually by the person who flagged the comment in the first place.

You lose some, you lose some.

Plus, I really just don't know how to write requirements for a new user interface.
And now I have to go to a meeting about it.
Where I'm expected to know what I'm doing.

I’m blessèdly done with that; see my G+ posting.

I'm going to go make some moar coffee first.
@tchrist I saw I was encircled by you.
bbl

4:07 PM
@tchrist That's what Robert E. Howard thought.

4:21 PM
hello all. don't feel like formally asking this on meta. what's the stance on posting multiple answers vs. one answer with multiple examples. IE the user in this post: english.stackexchange.com/questions/174579/…

4:38 PM
Just watched Bourne Supremacy.

@KitFox Exactly, and putting chocolate chips even worse.
@tchrist Paraboreal
As in "Can I have a paraboreal eggs please, and coffee?".
@KitFox That is offensive. Not agreeing that is.
@JasperLoy Is that the one where that guy gets shot while they're driving down the highway backwards? And then he puts his seat belt on?

5:09 PM
chicken wings were too hot at lunch. Guess I have to eat an ice-cream sandwich now.

Q: When must I use the apostrophe meaning possesion without S?

JacobI pressume it is because of the /S/ sound, but I don't find the exact rule in order to apply it. What sentences are correct? Mr Jones' scarf Ms Susan's scarf

@njboot We prefer a single answer with multiple examples, unless the answers are radically different. In this case, I'd recommend adding to your existing answer.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 such hardships

omg tea steeping

steeps fingers
ow!
I means steeples fingers

phew, just in time.

5:17 PM
I could use some tea too. wanders off to boil water

good tea go?

So. Anybody know how to document "requirements" for a user interface? Just write "make it not suck"?

@KitFox Write what it should allow the user to do. Write how it should allow it (specific control flows or UIs, max number of clicks, etc). Write how it should look. Write how it should react to small screens such as phones, or touch screens such as phones/tablets.
There are several categories of requirements. Decide which ones are in-scope first. :)

How do I write how it should look? That's what I'm having trouble with.
The functional pieces are functional.

@KitFox That's hard. Usually the visual designer is given leeway. Are there any specific requirements?

5:22 PM
@KitFox I'd ask a graphic designer

We don't have a visual designer. The coder does it.

is he good at graphic design?

The last guy is the new guy's manager, and he had the aesthetic sensibilities of a goldfish.

So we have to have a convincing hand-wavy method of saying "so it doesn't suck".
Or "so it sort of conforms to some kind of design standard".

5:23 PM
pick a couple of nice fonts and a colour scheme
or just ask for it to look like Time Cube

Oh, Time Cube. Yes.

pinnacle of design
also a wholesome, family oriented message
> Children will be blessed for

Killing Of Educated Adults

Wow.

geez. Time Cube. I forgot about that.
It's hilarious until you realize that the guy is probably just schizophrenic.

Never Forget

5:27 PM
Then it's just sad.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I am still flabbergasted that he was interviewed on TV
somewhere
probably a local station

But Kit, if you have no graphic designer, I'd suggest starting with a simple framework like Bootstrap and just using its styles.
@MattЭллен yeah but they interview ANYONE on tv.

Except me... I don't think I've ever been interviewed.

@KitFox Really? They are so different.

5:28 PM
have I been interviewed? I don't think so
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 oh yeah! bootstrap is good

we are using it now. I like it a lot.
It's very unobtrusive but also very powerful. Almost entirely CSS.

@KitFox wireframe? Balsamiq? Oh and 'don't do stupid things'
@KitFox But the color!

So the tricky part is that the whole website is being redesigned.

@KitFox the minimal articulate thing is to say 'have it look like (such and such) webste'

@KitFox it's too painful to watch

5:31 PM
I know people who will design websites if you pay them money and are good at it

Well, we're paying around a million dollars for some people to do it.

@KitFox I did recommend that to the other user below one of his answers in the comment section. He didn't want to combine them on account of them being too different - which is silly reasoning IMO. Thanks for the clarification.

@MattЭллен s/and are good at it//

@njboot For that type of question, it makes more sense to combine them, I think, but there isn't any specific prohibition.

@Mitch well, sure. I'll design one if you pay me. but... well...

5:33 PM
@MattЭллен I think @Kit has rem acu tetigisti'd it. It's really hard to make specs for a visual design, that isn't already doing the design itself.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Wow, it just gets worse.

@Mitch those aren't words
O I C it's latin or something
that's dead to me
OK. I finally gave in and bought a referbed nexus 7 16GB

@MattЭллен nice. 2012 or 2013?

2012
is there a big difference?

A whole year!

5:41 PM
:O
this one is more mature
it's made life choices
it understands right from wrong

@MattЭллен They improved it. About as much as you'd expect in a year.

good good

The 2013 version has more processor, more ram. That's mainly it.

More ram. giggle

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 cool. I don't think I'm going to be pushing it to the limit
it should arrive to me sometime this month :D

5:48 PM
nice. You should unlock the bootloader right away, in case you want to root it later. unlocking the bootloader requires wiping the device.
once unlocked, you can root it without wiping.
of course, that device is not getting future android updates so you should install cyanogenmod on it.
you can always uninstall cm quite easily on nexus devices.
Google makes the factory images available.

OK, thanks!

c c
6:11 PM
this bottle contains the world

So does any open bottle

@cc It's very difficult to wash.

You need a special brush.

a plumber's toothbrush

c c
In mathematics, and particularly topology, a fiber bundle (or, in British English, fibre bundle) is a space that is locally a product space, but globally may have a different topological structure. Specifically, the similarity between a space E and a product space B × F is defined using a continuous surjective map :\pi\colon E \to B that in small regions of E behaves just like a projection from corresponding regions of B × F to B. The map π, called the projection or submersion of the bundle, is regarded as part of the structure of the bundle. The space E is known as the total space...

6:24 PM
@cc What does a mascara brush have to do with fiber bundles?
Makes you look good for the dissertation defense?

c c
> A cylindrical hairbrush showing the intuition behind the term "fiber bundle". This hairbrush is like a fiber bundle in which the base space is a cylinder and the fibers (bristles) are line segments. The mapping π:E→B would take a point on any bristle and map it to its root on the cylinder.
if you consider a flat brush, it generate a small strip from a line, this is the analogous in 2D (for generating moebius strip for example)

So this is how to get girls interested in advanced maths.

@cc What are E,B, and F in the hairbrush?

c c
good question

I think I might go insane.
I've just noticed that the new pilot documentation is different than the pilot documentation I'm currently using.
So I have to copy over stuff.

6:36 PM
@KitFox If you're thinking about it, at least you have some choice left.

c c
I think E is the parametrization of the main line of the brush, F is the rotation parameter around it, and B is the image after applying the transformation: (so it's a bottle, or a torus,..)

so we're talking analogies here, so is E the mainline of the bottle, the bottle itself or the parametrization of the bottle or a parametrization of the main line of the bottle? Also, you should just say E is the bottle, F is a cross section of the bottle, and B is a point on the crossection (if that is in fact the case). Because that's how the analogy goes. Or however it goes.

And so it goes, and so it goes, and so will you soon, I suppose.

c c
the bottle would be an ankward parametrization since it's a weird surface compared to a cylinder
for example a torus is like a cylinder, sometimes you'll prefer to make calculus on the cylinder than the torus

@cc bottle cylinder same thing. so let's go with cylinder.
also torus not like a cylinder here. (unless you identify points at the end and we're not).

c c
6:50 PM
is a circle homeomorphic to a segment?

@Mitch Can't recall so much detail, lol.
I just watched Bourne Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum in that order. Yay!
Hey @cornbreadninja麵包忍者 the pain is gone?

Jez
7:11 PM
@KitFox you watch that vid?

Hey @Jez any good news on okcupid?

Jez
nope... same old

@Jez I think she went home, lol.

7:42 PM
prods quiet room

ouch!
uhoh, my lego bunnies are multiplying

@aediaλ I had 3 cups coffee today!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Awwh that is adorable!
@JasperLoy Yay coffee! I'm having another cup right now :)

@aediaλ Also got an ice-cream truck yesterday

OOOOH! I'm jealous.

7:53 PM
Why do they have Mother's Day? Every day is Mother's Day, lol.

!!lego 70804
hm, bot's sleeping?
It comes with extra parts so you can make this out of it:
so that the ice cream people can fight the evil Dalek/evil-robot

Oh man I love the popsicle projectiles

yeah they're neat, except that the mechanism they use for firing is notoriously bad.
They basically just flop out.
The little black robot in the bottom-right of my photo has a three-rocket magazine inside his body. You can fire the rocket out its mouth, then the mag drops down and another rocket is put in place. But instead of spitting rockets he just drools them.

8:08 PM
Aww. There's always pretend.

A robot drooling rockets is pretty amusing too
Although probably not as threatening as intended

But I feel ripped off ever since Lego made this set
It uses a crank to hit the soccer-stand, which is a spring-loaded thing, and it rapid-fire shoots 8 or 10 rockets
It was awesome
I should put mine back together
Not to mention it comes with a million vikings
So ever since that, the flick-fire missiles have really disappointed me.

Oh wow. That does look fantastic. I didn't even know there were LEGO vikings
How did I miss all these dragons and and the serpent and the fenris wolf!

8:24 PM
@aediaλ it was in 2007
Can you remember that far back?
I can barely remember it
My daughter was born in 2008. Everything before that is like a care-free blur
The latest Lego castle stuff is kinda a snooze. But we get awesome stuff like the modular buildings and the fairground mixer. Which if you haven't seen yet, you should totally look into.
Oh, and the Ghostbusters Ecto 1 was released last weekend.

Jez
bloody youtube
my videos have been "processing" all day
even re-uploading doesnt fix it
dont know whether they will ever be "processed"

I've been zipping a file for 30 minutes :)

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't really remember it day to day, no. I remember working at summer camp and then finally finding a fulltime job... so sans money I wouldn't have been buying any LEGO anyhow. Probably didn't even allow myself to walk down the aisle in the store.

@aediaλ yeah. sans money is hard. They say money doesn't buy happiness. But it does buy Lego, and Lego makes me happy, so I think that puts that notion to rest.

8:46 PM
Whoever said money doesn't buy happiness clearly didn't realize money could buy LEGO and doctor's visits and car repairs and gin.

Did we lose a mod recently?
Seems like simchona hasn't been here in weeks.
@aediaλ Also kittens. And scotch. And sex. They're still working on unicorns and rainbows.

A: Remove querystring from URL

RobustoAn easy way to get this is: function getPathFromUrl(url) { return url.split("?")[0]; } For those who also wish to remove the hash (not part of the original question) when no querystring exists, that requires a little bit more: function stripQueryStringAndHashFromPath(url) { return url.spl...

Yay, finally made my century on SO.

Sweet!

> I will diminish, and go into the west.

@MattЭллен Is it too late to get the text?

8:54 PM
@Robusto I don't know. I haven't looked...

No problema.

@Robusto It's right here

@MattЭллен This b-b-b-begs the question, "How do we know these words date from 15K YBP?"

carbon dative?

As Martha would say, "Thwack!"
J'accusative!

8:57 PM
:D

Seriously, though, from reading the opening of that article it's not clear to me how the time-frame is anything more than a model that relies on copious amounts of extrapolation.

I agree. it's just statistics
not physical evidence

Jez
anyone know much about youtube?
and why it might take forever processing videos?

for upload?

Jez
yup

9:00 PM
can't say I've ever tried.

Jez
ARGH
grandma just rang, picked up phone, knocked cider bottle off table, broken TWO plates in one go
pretty strong bottle

oh no!

Jez
i guess glass > ceramics

Hi @MattЭллен!

hi @JasperLoy

9:11 PM
After installing Linux Mint 17, the pings sound like claps!

I've muted pings!

Oh I just watched the Bourne trilogy of movies. Thinking of what to watch next...

Jez
@JasperLoy maybe it's applauding you for installing Linux

I switched to Mint from Debian because I want to use MATE desktop.

@JasperLoy We use some version of Mint down at the hackspace
I don't remember which version

9:18 PM
I really dislike the switch from GNOME 2 to 3. MATE is a fork of GNOME 2 invented just because people hated the new GNOME.

@JasperLoy The Artist

It feels a lot like Windows XP!

yes, the PC at the space feels like that

@MattЭллен What is it about? I found a new site to watch movies, lol.

@JasperLoy it's about a silent movie actor and his fall from grace
it's a sweet, silly film

9:19 PM
@MattЭллен But is it a silent movie?

yes
apart from a dream sequence

Does that mean there are only subtitles and no speech?

yes, like in charlie chaplin films

Ah, no way. I am not going to watch it!
It must be noisy and colourful, not silent and black white!

oh, then perhaps you'd prefer Highlander 3

9:21 PM
I like to start from 1, not 3.

then start with Highlander 1
it is also noisy and colourful
I watched Highlander 3 the other day, so that's why I said it first

Unfortunately the movies on that site have low sound volume, even when I turn everything to the max. So I may have to watch pseudosilent movies, lol.
The valedictorian is here, shh...

A: One word for “saying ‘Farewell’ to someone”

RegDwigнtUm, the single word for "say farewell" is farewell. This is English. You can use any word at all as a verb. Wiktionary: farewell (third-person singular simple present farewells, present participle farewelling, simple past and past participle farewelled) To bid farewell or say goodby...

Seriously, why is everyone beating around the bush?
One asker, seven answerers, but I am the very first one to check the dictionary entry for farewell?

9:53 PM
At least Elian is consistently off the wall.

10:16 PM
@Jez Yep.
Hi @Matt!

10:32 PM
@KitFox Hi!

Ohai, @Jasper!

Morning!

Hi!

OK I tried to kill another lizard just now but it disappeared.

@KitFox Good afternoon, behatted vulpine acquaintance; @Cerberus Salve, tricephalous chthonic canine friend; @JasperLoy Greetings, gregarious mathematician! Quid agis, Cerbere? What is the current topic of conversation?
