GRUB2 wont be installed if I install Ubuntu alone in my PC?

EFI disk?

Hmmmm... yes i suppose..
In boot menu it shows an option named "UEFI"..

sudo grub-install /dev/sda
won't work.

7:07 AM
lemme try..
tried and it showed...
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
...just that.. nothing else..

Oh.

Now I dont (yet) have a backup device and i dont want to mess with my PC.. any idea how to delete whatever I installed? :-0
(I must seriously try to learn some typewriting!)
@AvinashRaj

@Venki Why?

Uhh.. GRUB wont mess my system right?

don't play with grub.

7:14 AM
So how to remove it???????
I ran the command you told to and it showed the output ^ meaning its installed.. so now can I delete it?

it's not possible. If you mess with the boot then i 'll help you.

right.. hope the GRUB i installed wont mess my PC!! Will reboot it now..
Ha!! PC is fine!
BTW how can I find out if i have USB 2.0 port or USB 3.0 port?
@AvinashRaj

@Venki usb3.0 have a blue color if you look at the port itself

@Rinzwind Hi!! No blue colour i my port! Any command to CONFIRM I have USB 2.0? Thinking of buying an external HDD(for the first time) and so want to know for sure...
Semms there is no 100GB external HDD .. gonna go for 500GB

7:34 AM
@Venki you won't have USB3 speed if you plug it into USB2, and you may get power issues (USB2 500 mA vs. USB3 900 mA).
So if the drive is USB3 only it may not get enough power from an USB2 port.

Well I dont have a USB 3.0 device to connect and check if all that problems occur!!

In case the external drive comes with it's own power supply it should work on an USB2 port (but not at USB3 speed, of course).
Does e-SATA still exist?

@Takkat sure, that and you allways have the option of a regular drive with a protective plate to cover the electronics and a cord out the side of the computer ;)
I usually buy an enclosure separate from the drive, got one that had e-sata/firewire/usb last time

my case came with an internal SATA port attached to a SATA jack in the rear but only a MOLEX power supply.. weird.

oh there should be a molex -> sata converter cable
and the molex gender would be odd.

7:43 AM
ah Firewire, that caauses nostalgic feelings.

my case supports it, my motherboard dosen't ;p

mmm, all warm and fuzzy

<-- still has a DAT video camera with Firewire

I remember some e-sata "cards" just routed a regular sata to the back... and the nice e-sata cables didn't work with it.

@VenkiL USB 3.0 will work in 2,0. USB 3.0 type A connectors are always blue and have a second set of shorter connecters deeper
@Mateo: thats a confusing thing
I have a e-sata bracket, which has a pair of e-sata outs, a single molex connector, and 2 cables - one of which is e-sata -> sata and the other is sata to molex

7:46 AM
<-- hates it when all those cable-connector-adapters are outside of a box

lol
I dug out that bracket... 8 years on
after I found those cables and wondered what the heck they were

Well. let us make this simple.. IS THERE ANY COMMAND TO FIND WHICH USB PORT I HAVE?
Forget about HDDs
just which usb port I have...
@ Anyoneoutthere

8
Q: How do I find out whether my system has usb 3 ports?

sdsI want to buy an external usb 3.0 drive and I wonder how to figure out whether my laptop has such a port (or only 2.0). Neither lsusb -v, nor /proc/bus/input/devices offers any obvious hints, although the former says a lot of 2.0 root hub which might imply v2 and not v3. Right?

@Takkat Thanks you! I only have 2.0
Now to do some e-shopping...

8:03 AM
E-shopping is fun... everytime my chart is full I'll have to leave the shop before I click on buy.

:-p BTW 500GB external HDDs are costly all above 3000(INR) ..
HA! It sucks! giving up on the HDD..

@Takkat alternate.nl has a dekstop configurator you can play with

Well gotta leave it seems! Ciao!

8:20 AM
@Rinzwind configuring is more fun than actually having to pay the money for it.

just saying: if you want to waste your time there is a website to do it ;-)
Ahum! Does Oli admit he is created from a dead corpse and a male hugging?

:) configuring a new box is like browsing a fashion magazine... no waste of time!
difference is that in my house the mailman often brings new fashion but only rarely new hardware.
3 pairs of jeans = 1 new desktop - I could run my own server farm by now.

send the fashion back when you see it :+

8:45 AM
yeah: "Sorry, I did not order that" ;)

is this flaggable as copy/pasted? askubuntu.com/a/460942/15811
do take special attention to 1) in that answer >:)

9:02 AM
wohoo

"howoo" back at ya!

Man what is it with Ubuntu users and sudo su?

@terdon you noticed that too :-P

And "launching" defined as creating a symlink...

did you also notice the influx in "ubuntu deleted my windows during install' topics? >:)
probably all win XP users :=D
(regarding the 1st line: it should say "I" deleted ... ;-)

9:08 AM
Any moderators online?

nope
takkat is not AU so he don't count >:-D

ok, I'll wait. What is AU?
AskUbuntu?

yes

Dan
Is this comment rude? (I think I really need to learn how to express myself gently in English)

yep.

9:09 AM
thanks

@Dan nope >:D
flagged that answer myself as not an answer

future mods are here now only.

@AvinashRaj who? :=) not me that's for sure >:D

add me also.
i want to change my avatar.please give some suggestions.
you expect my avatar would be ____________
Fill in the blank ^^^^^^

@int_ua What do you need? We might be able to help.
Thanks for your answer and the effort you put into it but you are seriously complicating things. i) Your step 1 is completely unneeded, we can assume the OS is already installed ii) What's the point of extracting to /tmp if you move it to /opt? Just extract to /opt. iii) Please don't use sudo su, that kills little fluffy seals. Just use sudo, that's what it's for! iv) How is creating a symlink in step 6 "launching" the program? v) Why in the world would you run it as bash sqldeveloper $*? You don't need bash and you do need to quote "$*" or, better, to use "$@" instead. — terdon 6 secs ago

9:24 AM
Far too much effort Terdon :-)

9:35 AM
@Rinzwind Well, the guy did put some effort into the answer. May as well point out the problems.

no he copy/pasted that with no source reference :=)

@Rinzwind From where?

@int_ua and one just arrived

They're such bad instructions I assumed he did it himself.

could be could be :-) but the 1st one (install ubuntu) got me ticked already >:)
Oli edited it :=D

Oli
9:43 AM
@terdon The bash sqldeveloper is there so it called the local sqldeveloper rather than recursing but I've replaced that too now.

@Oli Ah! I see, OK, I hadn't realized that, I thought that bash foo would still search the path first but of course, that would only be the case for bash -c. Thanks for the clarification.
Great edit by the way!

how to use sudo inside a script.

Dan
when possible, I don't recommend you use sudo in the script. Instead execute your script with sudo

^^^

Q: Should scripts that require sudo fail if they don't have it, or use sudo and prompt?

John FeminellaI have a script which gives me fine-grained control over my backlight brightness and requires sudo to run. It's essentially this: backlight="/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness" echo $1 | tee $backlight and lives at ~/bin/backlight-adjust. The script needs sudo privileges, because tee ...

@AvinashRaj dont

9:54 AM
And thanks for notifying me.

@AvinashRaj No, completely off topic.

questions about the codes which are intended to create Ubuntu apps are considered as ontopic.
How nano . command list the files preceeded by dot?

@AvinashRaj We have no idea what that code is supposed to be doing and it is in no way Ubuntu specific. He's asking how to create a JSON object.

I agree with terdon :)

hmm

10:05 AM
and way too basic >:D

A: Recover the files from ubuntu

xiaodongjieI want to help you, But I can't touch your computer directly. First, I strong recommend you recheck your files. So I suggest that you install and use that recovery programs as following way. I think that if you know about deleted file's magic, It's best software for you that use magicrescue(...

let's help him.

When do people ever going to realize you need to backup before messing with partitions and re-installing? :-P

@terdon : I am running script as root because script has some commands which should be run as a root and my last line is "gnome-session-quit" which is not running as root. So, I am finding solution to run it as root.

i never ever face this type of messing with partitions problem.

@Pandya hi

10:13 AM
@Rinzwind they will know forever after they had lost all their data.
@xiaodongjie what, if the first install was Wubi?

@xiaodongjie I doubt it will be possible. it is a wubi install... that data is gone forever

@Pandya OK it's just strange since gnome-session-quit requires input from the user. Anyway, can't you run the script with sudo instead? I mean, sudo script and then, inside the script, add another sudo: sudo -E -u pandya gnome-session-quit?

@Pandya if you want that you should make the whole script root and put it in /usr/sbin/ or /sbin.

@AvinashRaj By hitting <TAB> and not <ENter>

@Rinzwind oh, I think that he knows about that files' magic, however recovering is possible.

10:16 AM
@xiaodongjie Not sure. If that was a wubi install, the tools you suggest will fail since they expect an ext partition.

via use magicrescue.

@Pandya can we see the entire script?

@terdon oh, can you tell me so about magicrescue?

@Pandya are you a sourashtrian?

@xiaodongjie Nope. sorry. Don't really know about it.

10:17 AM
undelete mode is so different.
It's not related with file system structure.

@AvinashRaj never suggest sudo cp for a file in $HOME! Your suggestion would have broken the OPS system since it would result in a .profile owned by root!
Man, what is it with you Ubuntu people and sudo? :P

hmm

Hmm, maybe not broken but certainly caused issues.

@terdon : I added command like dpkg,apt that should be run as root, I tried "sudo -E -u pandya gnome-session-quit" in that script but it not working and giving same error.

cp -a preserves permission.

10:20 AM
@Takkat True but why would that be needed?

because of sudo taking ownership otherwise... ;)

@Pandya Hmm. Tell me something, why do you need to log out after the script is finished anyway?
@Takkat Well, yeah, but that problem only exists if you decide to use sudo in the first place!

yeah sure... I don't know the context. Sometimes I have to copy other people's stuff.

@Takkat sudo cp /etc/skel/.profile ~/
context ^^

kk no sudo there...

10:24 AM
:)
@Pandya got it. Try this:
#!/bin/bash

apt-get install nedit
sudo -E -u terdon gnome-session-quit
Then, run the script like this:
sudo -E script.sh
@Pandya updated my answer. Let me know if that works.

@terdon : Ok. I will try and will accept your answer. Currently, I am leaving chat-room.

OK

user320514Last night i tried to open my website but it showed an error that 404 page not found. Can anyone please help me to find out the error that has shown in my website. This is my website http://www.kinindia.com/10th-result-2013.php

Yep.i think so.

11:48 AM
@terdon ping

@int_ua you called?

yeah. I have some uncomfortable questions

ummmm. OK.
Like?

I'm frustrated by marking a wrong question a duplicate just to earn more point to one's own answer as I see it
Check the situation here askubuntu.com/questions/449103/…

@int_ua That seems like perfectly reasonable behavior.
Your question is indeed a duplicate of the older one. Also note that Braiam only initiated the close, he was not the only user to do so. Plus, his is not the accepted answer of the dupe so he's unlikely to get any rep for it.
Do you feel your question is not a duplicate @int_ua?

11:56 AM
My question was created 12 days before the other one, how exactly is that a duplicate? What am I missing?
Apr 17th vs Apr 29th, how is that older?

@int_ua Ah, good point. Hang on a sec.
OK, yes, your answer is older. I guess the people who voted to close just didn't realize. They just stumbled upon your question after having already seen the other one.
I wouldn't take it personally though, I really doubt it was done maliciously.

vote to reopen and tag the other one to close?

If you feel strongly about it, you can post a question on Ask Ubuntu Meta, suggesting that the situation be reversed.

or PM Mitch ;=)

ok, thanks.

12:01 PM
@mitch askubuntu.com/questions/449103/… is closed as a dupe of askubuntu.com/questions/457825/… but the last one is newer than the 1st one plus is has better answers, would it be better to reverse that and close the other as duplicate of the 1st one (or merge them)?
and done @int_ua

thanks

@terdon no need. just nag the moderator that closed it >:-D

it's still sad that we had to go through that conlict...

SEE!!!!!!!!!!!
took only seconds _o-

@Rinzwind Done

lol

@int_ua Seriously, no conflict here. It was an honest mistake.

ok, leaving now, thanks a lot

@xiaodongjie why are you being taken hostage?

12:04 PM
What do you guys think of copy.com?

@Mitch it is better than skydrive ;-) I like copy.com but at work we went with googledrive

hmm? @Rinzwind what?
hostage?
me?

@Rinzwind Anything is better than skydrive!!!!

@xiaodongjie yes \o/ <- both hands in the air (like someone is holding a gun at you)
\o and o/ is waving >:D

@Rinzwind oh, I see, again, \o

@Mitch I didn't know about it. Just read their webpage and it looks great. If it lives up to its promises.

for one it is cheap :D

hey guys

I just have don't like MS.

I have quite simple problem for ubuntu users

12:10 PM
hey she!

@hunter hey you

@hunter hey girl.

@xiaodongjie what?

lol

12:12 PM
guys doesnt mean boys lol":)))
ahahahah

@hunter oh, hahaha!

guys like hey friends or mates

@hunter do you know how to start it from command line

yes I know

so add that command to start up applications ;-)

12:13 PM
I added, none sense. it doesn't launch

(wait is that a server or a desktiop?)

it's desktop

@hunter we have no idea what exactly you're trying to do.

their site has not a lot to go on :P

What are the contents of the file you downloaded? How would you launch it from the command line manually?

12:16 PM
@terdon yes I see. one of your members gets guys as boys. and you don't understand question in english
Okay thx

@hunter Back down boy!

lol

I'm trying to help here but I don't know what command you're trying to run.

Also, guys does mean boys if you want to be pedantic about it. So does mates.
@hunter I have. What command do you use to launch it manually?

12:18 PM
' guys' basically means everyone, it's regardless of gender fyi
okay, what I did is
I created .sh script
and added followings
cd /path/to/enclosing/folder
java -jar jdownloader.jar
added to update-rc defaults and enabled

did you make it executable? :)

and added this script to init.d folder

Huh? What's jdownloader.jar? I thought you were trying to run Universal Media Server.

yes
same thing for ums.jar
I did

And is this a GUI app?

12:21 PM
yes

I would include it to startup though and not in init.d

There's your problem. It won't work with update-rc 'cause you need a running X server for it.

what command to startup
my distro is desktop

in dash type "start" and it will be the 1st one

x server already running I think
what command to add there I mean

12:22 PM
java -jar /path/to/enclosing/folder/ums.jar

^^

Assuming the above launches it correctly when run from a terminal.

might need " " though

did it, as answer. nothing launches on startup

probably safer: java -jar "/path/to/enclosing/folder/ums.jar"

12:23 PM
okay I'll give it a try
thank you. I'll let you know

@hunter What happens if you open a terminal and run that command?
Does it work?

yes it works but, command launches gui and runs in commandline too.
I can see lines appearing in terminal
I mean, when I do ctrl+c
app quites

Yes of course. That's normal. Can you show the exact command, including the actual path?
Anyway, adding java -jar "/path/to/enclosing/folder/ums.jar" to the startup apps should work. If it doesn't, you might need to add a sleep directive to make it wait until everything is settled down before launching.

there is a ums.sh in the tar.gz
update.rc is wrong anyways: the installer notes:
4) Run (note: UMS should NOT be run as root):

cd ums-<version>
./UMS.sh
so the startup probably needs to be
./dir/to/UMS.sh

Yeah, I'm downloading it now. @hunter next time, please include a link to where you found whatever program you're asking about and also show the exact command you use to launch it. In this case, an ls -l of the extracted archive would also have been useful.

12:34 PM
:=)
oops that showed more than intended

damn, missed that

1 sec
ls
CHANGELOG.txt DummyInput.ass LICENSE.txt logback.headless.xml plugins renderers ums.jar VirtualFolders.conf
documentation INSTALL.txt linux logback.xml README.txt UMS.conf UMS.sh WEB.conf

OK, should work fine if @hunter adds the sh to the startup apps. Just don't include the . from Rinzwind's suggestion, that was a typo:
/dir/to/UMS.sh

Q: Start-up error (ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxxx does not exist. Dropping to a shell! )

user258548I got serius problem with ubuntu 14.04 please help me. When i start my computer its says following errors: — Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) — Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) — Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) — Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /...

what's the reason?
I think that the partition's uuid was modified.

@xiaodongjie fstab probably has the wrong UUIDfor a disc

12:40 PM
oh, To boot successfully, as kernel parameter, root=/dev/sdaX? It's right?

here is all you need ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2017580 for that
"sudo blkid" is needed
and that needs to be checked against fstab

Et tú @Rinzwind? No sudo needed for blkid :P

@terdon hey I copied pasted that from the link

:)
excuses, excuses...

nope its the sudo truth

Q: My Ubuntu 14.04 LTS doesn't have sound

abbasiI installed Ubuntu 14.04 on VMware workstation version 10.0.0 on my Windows 7 machine. After installing I figured out that it doesn't have any sound so I checked the sound settings. All items seem to be at their default states and correct. Any suggestion to find the problem?

@AvinashRaj Why not? It seems like a basic sed regex question

post the input and expected output on your question. — Avinash Raj 18 secs ago

1:20 PM
@terdon where is the input and the expected ouput?
i can't able to understand his question.

@AvinashRaj Yes, it's not very clear. His input is the 1st, long line of code and the desired output is the 2nd.

it's too too big.
how do i print the input with echo command in terminal.
tried echo ' '
and
echo ""

?

but neither of these won't work.

I just put it into a file

1:34 PM
@terdon how about this?
wget -q -O - "serverlink" | sed 's/.*flvurl=\(.*\);autoplay=0.*/\1/g'

@AvinashRaj I don't think that will work. My understanding (very possibly wrong) is that he wants everything up to the 1st & that will get everything up to the second, so 2 separate http:// lines.
Also, that will print any surrounding lines as well. If he is actually getting the HTML from the server and not parsing it as @steeldriver suggested, he will want to print only the lines matching his text.

this is the expected output
http://redirector.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Da87eff0521883521%26itag%3D5%26source%3Dblogger%26app%3Dblogger%26cmo%3Dsensitive_content%253Dyes%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1400695090%26sparams%3Did,itag,source,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3DAA6B72C5D9C12D461C7A0E3F59B2C208A7CDC82D.AE374E37E58A41191B10F30AA43BE42379DA6D5B%26key%3Dck2&iurl=video.google.com/…

Yay! Hit 9k :)
@AvinashRaj Not in the OP. He is showing this as the expected output:
http://redirector.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Da87eff0521883521%26itag%3D5%26source%3Dblogger%26app%3Dblogger%26cmo%3Dsensitive_content%253Dyes%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1400695090%26sparams%3Did,itag,source,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3DAA6B72C5D9C12D461C7A0E3F59B2C208A7CDC82D.AE374E37E58A41191B10F30AA43BE42379DA6D5B%26key%3Dck2&amp
