Lemme look.
Hmm.
I'm not sure what our legal stance is...
But it's a bad question nevertheless.
I bet there's an answer over on @Nathan's site though.

ah, the latest meta on dvd's sort of covers it

@Mateo and you don't see my answer saying "no, it's fine" and then I go look it up and I'm like o_O it's not ok?!?!
Very saddening :(
But yeah, that meta post covers it.

12:17 AM
oh, the legal bit... yeah, dvd playback is a sad state

12:31 AM
@Seth re:Realtek although Tenda products are all Linux compatible and some of them use Realtek
@Mateo Nice-looking disks. Much better than handing people a home-burned version with a Sharpie label

@chaskes realtek usually has drivers available. Not always kept up to date in the distros though
they're my number 2 choice for wifi on linux ;p

@JourneymanGeek thanks for the info. what's your first choice?

I guessed I should've realized that

of course, you can have intel wifi cards in any form factor as long as its mini pci-e
and I'm a big fan of those tiny nano dongles (which are almost always a specific realtek chip) for emergency access points

12:38 AM
yeah, I have a couple of tenda dongles: one mini, and one with a huge antenna

I have a dx branded one in my toolkit ;p

they definitely come in handy

it was cheap (~5.3 usd when I bought it), and does AP/Hybrid mode in windows, and works with hostapd on linux
if it only did 5ghz, I'd probably buy a half dozen for network upgrades ;p

awesome.

(of course, I have a network that already allows most of my systems to connect two different ways for redundancy....)
Wifi, and homeplug, with either a router or a switch anywhere I have more than one system

12:58 AM
5356196 oh yeah, then saying "here is a free is to replace windows ;)" they think something shady is going on

Google Music has come to Canada!

thats cool ;p
(I had it for ages before it came to singapore. Didn't get useful till the android app though)

@NathanOsman woo welcome, be sure and try the music manager

I'm downloading it right now.

Then they do stuff like free songs in the play store. Sometimes it is something I will listen to

1:03 AM
lol
I uploaded my entire collection there for use with my phone

1:46 AM
It doesn't seem to be uploading full songs.
My PC has only uploaded about 24 MB for 37 songs.

1:57 AM
Strange, do you think it got the meta data and art first and is backgrounding the rest?

plausible
or if songs are uploaded in the same format already, and its identical, its just not uploading them

That's possible too.
There's one way I'll know for sure.
One of my songs has an audible click in it from when I ripped the original CD.
If that click is there on Google Music, I'll know the song was uploaded.
Otherwise, it's not uploading the actual audio file.

you have to install it manually.

@AvinashRaj thanks for your edit.

ok i see what it does. the -v flag inverts the match in grep. So return all lines that do not contain pts.

@AvinashRaj OK, I will, if I run into trouble.

@ypercube no.

The community bot does its job very well - there is very little point to protect stuff - usually only when we are having spam attacks. We should shortly afterwards unprotect stuff.

i think the questions should be protected if there are three deleted answers on that.

protect questions is one of those pointless privileges. You've earned it... just ignore it.
please dont go around looking for stuff to protect. There are more productive stuff to do on the site.

oh, no.
Then what's the use of this privilege?

Hello

Anyone have any idea where I can find the variable types of dconf explained? What's type: as for example? ASCII?

@terdon bool, string and integrer

One of them is 'as'. It's OK, I figured it out, it looks like it means ASCII

mmm? what?

is this correct?

@Braiam The ones under org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings for example

@terdon weird...
in .preferences is as I have said

1:58 PM
@Braiam Yeah, I know. And it is absurdly hard to search for docs on it since we have to search for as...

I bet they are gconf not dconf schemas

oh what's the diff between gconf and dconf?
i'm going to post it as a question.

@Braiam Not sure how I can tell the difference but I have the schema in question open in dconf-editor at the moment.

dconf imports gconf schemas @AvinashRaj

Q: Gconf, Dconf, Gsettings and the relationship between them

idgarI'm trying to understand how Gconf, Dconf and Gsettings works and what the relationship is between them. All I know is: Gconf - XML based database (backend system). the older one. Dconf - BLOB based database (backend system). the newer one. Gsettings - CLI tool to edit settings. looks like it...

@Braiam Ah, does that mean that anything under the gnome schema is actually gconf?

wow, already there.

@terdon some of them

Q: What are the differences between gconf and dconf?

nkintI've read a lot of discussion about a new Ubuntu configuration tool: gconf is replaced by dconf. Why is this change being made? Why is there so much debate about it? Is it too difficult to create a gconf2dconf migration tool?

dconf in the future, but some apps still use gconf, so, dconf just provide an interface to those gconf
@terdon apparently "type: as" doesn't mean anything in dconf, I checked out the reference manual on the gnome page developer.gnome.org/dconf/unstable, and nothing. Gconf is the one that uses bool, string, integrer
@terdon apparently "type: as" doesn't mean anything in dconf, I checked out the reference manual on the gnome page developer.gnome.org/dconf/unstable, and nothing. Gconf is the one that uses bool, string, integrer

@Braiam Where did you find the explanations of the variable types there? Also, did you mean that dconf is the one that uses bool string interger and so 'as' must be from gconf?

@terdon no, backwards, gconf uses bool/string/integrer while as should be dconf's
this is a valid gconf command:
gconftool --type Boolean --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/touchpad_enabled true

2:15 PM
Yeah
It's just that you said "apparently "type: as" doesn't mean anything in dconf". I take it you meant Gconf?

no, I meant that, as is just nothing in dconf, going from the reference

I finally got a new laptop! But it's Windows 8 :( How do i get in the bios so that i can boot form a Ubuntu usb stick!

in summary, there is no "type" to speak of in dconf

Not sure that's true. I see types a plenty in dconf editor and one of them is as which does not exist fore gconf as you explained. That implies that it is a dconf type.
They've really made a royal mess of all this with the different backendn...

@terdon I doubt so, the dconf databases doesn't need a "type" value, as they are just directories/paths and keys, also several examples don't have "type"
I'm trying to get the dconf-editor sources to see from where those "as" comes from

@terdon is there any way to reduce this?
sed 's/\^M//g;s/done.//g;s/% /%\n/g' file

@Braiam Good luck! I'm running a fever at the moment so I'm not up to something as complex :)

i think this question is dupe askubuntu.com/questions/461597/…
about shebang line.

2:25 PM
@AvinashRaj depends on the input. I don't know what you're trying to do. Possibly. Then again, possibly not.

@terdon found it
public SchemaKey.from_xml(Xml.Node* node, Schema schema, string? gettext_domain)
    {
        this.schema = schema;
        this.gettext_domain = gettext_domain;

        for (var prop = node->properties; prop != null; prop = prop->next)
        {
            if (prop->name == "name")
                name = prop->children->content;
            else if (prop->name == "type")
                type = prop->children->content;
            else if (prop->name == "enum")
            {
                type = "s";
summary, it's a "TODO" :(

@AvinashRaj No, you've misunderstood. ^M is not a litteral ^M it's the carriage return (\r) see choroba's answer.

and i want this.

@AvinashRaj I know, I read it. Nevertheless, the ^M is 99% sure to be a \r.

But choroba answer doesn't work for me if i give the above line as input.

@AvinashRaj Yes because it's the wrong input.
Probably.
Anyway, just post your answer and see how it goes.

Does your input data contain literal sequences of ^M, or are the ^M instances representations of underlying \r (CR) characters, as you'd get with cat -v? — mklement0 1 min ago
