@badp That's the thing, if he committed no crime but you arrested him anyway, you commit a crime yourself - you only make it harder for yourself in the long run. And that's before taking into account that he can just shoot you in self-defence if you try to use force.

clearly he's being arrested for COP ABUSE

@badp Nothing. It's just people on the internet being stupid.

German name for the crime of using civil arrest against someone who committed no crime is called "Erlaubnistatbestandsirrtum", in case you want to look that up (or just marvel at German legalese ...)

@MartinSojka It appears it means "commit a crime under the assumption you're not committing a crime", such as beating the shit out of someone in defense of your home, when the assumed burglar was actually invited to sneak in by your teenage daughter. Doesn't seem to be about making arrests in particular.

12:18 PM
@Wipqozn What am I looking at?

@Arperum It's a painting.
is really cleveR
@Arperum "Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains" by Albert Bierstadt.

@Wipqozn Completely made up or based on some existing place?

such spider much grace

When did Spider-Man pick up phasing abilities?

To be clear, the reason that was my favorite lifehack is because it's stupid, wrong, and will only get you into more trouble if you try it.
Actually, that's most lifehacks.

user15026
@Sterno Which is why watching them propagate across the internet is amazing because you KNOW people haven't actually tried them

@Sterno Isn't that implied in the definition of lifehack?

I'm just filled with hate.
I don't hate you guys though, you guys rock.

Boo. Almost Human got cancelled.

except me.

Except for @agent86.

@badp Still rather expensive GPU

my word, I haven't seen you in here in a while @IvoFlipse.

Also quite expensive CPU actually

@IvoFlipse Yep. I saved on the case and the RAM to put it under budget

12:27 PM
Right, well you can easily upgrade the RAM later
the other two are not, so makes sense
The cooler might be overkill too, but whatever

it probably won't hurt

@Wipqozn your word

@IvoFlipse I was considering skipping it, but it's like the cheapest part

12:29 PM
@badp So you could invest it elsewhere but what the hell

also I've seen how the stock Intel CPU cooler mounts on the board and it's fucking scary

Q: What's the special red resource required to forge the Shard of Icarael?

AntoI've got a quest in which I have to equip one of my heroes with the Shard of Icarael, but it requires a resource that I don't know about. What is it ?

@badp Yeah, sometimes it looks like its mounted, but its not really

@agent86 I thought fetch quests were frowned upon.

look at it
I MEAN LOOK AT IT

My CPU fan has one single disadvantage over the stock one, it tries to murder me whenever I try to screw around with some parts. I also have to remove it if I want to add more RAM. which is a nuisance.

@Arperum @BenBrocka warned me about a similar issue on Twitter

12:34 PM
Seriously, that fan has drawn blood on multiple occasions. The passive cooling part is sharp.

@badp And they have an arrow on the push pins indicating that you should turn them. But what they don't tell you is that's the way to turn them in order to release the cooler.

But I haven't had a single heat related issue at all though, so it got that going for it.

@falstro When you (as a citizen) arrest someone for committing a crime they aren't committing, you commit a crime under the assumption you're not committing a crime.

""BUT COP ABUUUUUSE"

I hope this clears it all up.

12:37 PM
The only difference really is that I have 2-3 day shipping on every part but the cooler
that one is 3-5 day shipping
CLEARLY THIS MEANS I SHOULD GO WITH THE STOCK COOLER

user15026
@Arperum :( Boo, murder fan. Boo.

I heard Pharrell Williams Happy song today and kept substituting "MOD ABUSE" into the lyrics. Thanks, @badp.

@Sterno You are most welcome

Quick question: are socket AM3+ CPUs compatible with socket AM3 motherboards?

12:47 PM
@PrivatePansy grats
but my n-year club badge is better than yours!!

I have the stock cooler on my i5. I don't mind it.

@badp Any HSF wide enough to hold a 120mm fan is likely to block high RAM. Any HSF not wide enough to hold a 120mm fan is probably junk. Comes with the territory

just so long as, say, the GPU fan doesn't suck the hot CPU air right in

isn't the GPU lower in the case than your CPU?

I DON'T KNOW
it is in the newegg tutorial

12:55 PM
usually the PCIe slots are lower than the CPU slot, that's how cases and boards are generally designed

@badp GPU fan is lower and facing the opposite direction

but I don't underestimate my ability to mount everything upleftwards-down

you just gotta chill, man. this is easy mode. slap parts together, avoid ESD, don't force anything.

@badp That would be pretty impressive since the only way the rear panel fits in is the right way

if she says no, no means no

12:57 PM
It's impossible to put most PC parts in wrong without breaking things through excessive physical force

before I had a college degree, I fixed and built computers for a living, so that makes 18 years now I've been doing it. I've fried exactly 2 things. one was a floppy drive where the board on the drive touched a metal part of the case I wasn't expecting. the other was a shitty LS120 drive that broke when it was turned on in a particular PC for no reason I could explain.

oh, you might want an extra 120mm fan for your towe'rs side intake

for the most part, all the advice you're going to be given that isn't "ground yourself" and "don't force things in" is advice for optimization rather than survival

@AshleyNunn I opened the case yesterday to doublecheck that everything was still properly seated for movement, and the only way it tried to murder me was choking me with dustclouds. Although that might've been a desperate cry for help too.
So much dust.

12:59 PM
just make sure you know which side is the intake on the fans. The "back" of the fan with the barcode/wire is the exhaust. Heat should do up and out of the case

so air would flow like that?

yes that's about right

that's the way everybody's case looks when their shit's in there.

your case also has top exhaust
and an optional side intake I'd recommend using, since it brings cool air more or less directly to the GPU

oh?

1:01 PM
open case. insert power supply (it only goes in one way). insert motherboard (the screw holes line up) put screws in. put power to case stuff like fans and LEDs and buttons. insert CPU and RAM, plug in CPU fan. if the system has onboard video, power up and check everything turns on. then move on to cards, and then to drives.

I played a game other than Diablo 3 the other day and haven't played D3 since. I think its spell is broken.

practically everything has obvious DO THIS labeling and an instruction manual, plus there's youtube and everything else.

@Sterno That also happened to me.

mostly things are keyed so they only fit together one way

@BenBrocka hm, like what fan?

1:05 PM
@StrixVaria I think at this point I'm done until the new rift mechanics come in. And then, only if it's actually cool

I'll give it a try again at the next big patch.

Any 120mm case fan should work. I use Coolermaster Sickleflows

@agent86 the only part I hate each and every single time I've assembled a PC is the case/motherboard connections.

for the most part, past the PSU fan and the CPU fan, all other fans are optional

1:05 PM
I believe there are non-LED parts

prior to moving my current computer into this case, I had just those two fans. this one has like... 3 other ones by default and I've added 0 more. the computer ran fine (a little noisy under load in the first case, but it was small)

Most cases have at least an intake and an exhaust though. Unless your PC is crazy open and crazy cool running you'll want some actual airflow
120mm fans don't add too much noise if managed properly, and 220mm fans are practically silent at any speed
80mm fans on the other hand are awful

yeah, my point is just to convince @badp that there's less complexity than what you'll hear from enthusiasts. we over complicate things for entertainment

well, and efficiency. It's nice to have a cool running quiet case, and adding a fan or two is quite easy

@TrentHawkins my previous case had two front port USB connections where each pin was a separate connector.
like WTF guys... that's like 16 tiny pins I have to figure out the pinout on before I can have usb :/
I finally glued them together

1:09 PM
@agent86 oh god no
the front panel ones are bad enough
I don't know why they're not a standardized unit with a single plugin. Just remove the pins in unused slots but leave the full sized plastic plug

weird

yeah, was my current case not like that? I can't recall.

I've never seen one where the front buttons/LEDs weren't single/double pins for each

@StrixVaria Me too. Also, the item drop lag isn't fixed yet.

Ugh why are my weekends all so busy?

1:11 PM
motherboard standoffs, frontpanel pins and custom cooler mountings (if removing the backplate is required) are the only parts I find annoying

I am going fishing/camping this weekend.

@StrixVaria Because otherwise it would be boring?

Probably because I'm both buying a house and having a baby soon.

user15026
@StrixVaria That might have something to do with it. ;)

Moving is awful

We had our offer accepted this morning, and they've taken the place we want to buy off the market

@fredley Was it that crazy lowball offer?

1:16 PM
@fredley Nice!

@Arperum We upped a bit
But fucking hell, we only started looking a week ago

@Arperum My initial offer on the house I got was crazy lowball and then they countered to a number within our budget. Everything went according to plan.

@StrixVaria Pretty much this
The downside is my computer finally gave up the ghost this morning, and it will probably have to wait a while until I can buy a new one.
We're going to our limit to buy this place

I am terrible at haggling. If something doesn't seem like a fair price, I just ignore it. If something seems fair, I pay it.

@StrixVaria I've been finding this particularly problematic for Kickstarters I backed 2 years ago, mostly forgot about, and ship to my old address

1:19 PM
If I'm selling something, I'm asking for what I think is fair. If you want to pay less, go somewhere else.

In my case I did a pretty lowball offer, got a counter offer at the lowest point they wanted to go, that was at the absolute maxlimit of my budget, after some more haggling I succeeded in getting 5k off.

Wow, Factorio has come a long way

For the house I just sold, I said "I want <X>", and the first person said "How about <X - 2>?", and the second person said "How about <X - 1>", and while I was about to take X-1 the third person said "How about <X + 2>" and I was all YOU MA'AM ARE A GENTLEWOMAN AND A SCHOLAR

@OrigamiRobot The house market over here is expected to haggle. The sellers of the house I'm buying wanted 150k Euro, They asked 159k, and took my offer of 145k..

I used to live in India, nothing has a fixed price, haggling is mandatory
@Arperum London is a sellers market. The shortage of houses here is insane.

1:22 PM
@Arperum Same for a car. I recognize that it is the norm, I am just saying I am bad at it and I hate it.

@OrigamiRobot I understand it for houses, kind of. They're huge purchases and there is a lot of wiggle room and both sides really often don't know what the hell they're doing
But for cars it pisses me off

The real bullshit thing for cars is all the fees and shit after the price.

@OrigamiRobot I'm generally not a fan of haggling myself too. But if it means the difference between being able to buy a house or move back in with my parents, I'll do it.

building a new house, there was no room to haggle. it was take it or leave it

My car was listed for 16k and I would have been happy to pay that and just that.

1:23 PM
in this area, it's a seller's market

JUST TELL ME HOW MUCH MONEY I NEED TO GIVE YOU SO I CAN LEAVE WITH THIS THING KTHXBAI

the previous two times I paid I think less than the asking price, usually something closer to the value of comps in price/sqft

@OrigamiRobot I didn't have any fees after the price of my car (other than paying for insurance). Probably because the dealer was having an orgasm after he said "that'll be $X" and I said "ok" rather than haggling.

@OrigamiRobot our license laws are ridiculous and assume your car retains full to 90% of it's value for 10 years

1:26 PM
The dealership didn't budge on the price either. Even after all the fees, I got it for about 1k under blue book value so w/e.
It's just the principle of the thing.

Q: Why does the statue at the airport wear a 'cone hat' in GTA 3?

TatshPretty sure I've seen this cone appear orange as well. This screen shot is taken from the iPad version. Furthermore, I always wondered what the text underneath is actually referring to. Does a radio station mention this 'event' in 1936? 'For those who fought for freedom. 1936'

If I had been buying a new car, I wouldn't have put up with all that bullshit though. I would have just said "Tell me how much I need to write a check for to leave with this car" and then I'd go to the next place and say the same thing. Then after I had a bunch of prices, I'd take the lowest price and ask all the previous people if they could beat it.

user15026
@OrigamiRobot My one and only car cost my dad $200 (he took two cars that were going to be junked, and managed to make one good car out of it), and I eventually signed it over to the government for $300 when they did one of those scrap rebate thingies

@BenBrocka Wat. That's not even close to realistic with modern cars.

user15026
1:28 PM
@BenBrocka O.o

@GnomeSlice I still haven't tested the non-beta version.

@Arperum isn't it great? Also we pay about 10% of the full price of the car in license fees in the first 10 years

New cars are also pretty damn weak. I remember causing 300+ euro of damage by just falling against a car...
@BenBrocka more wat.

In IL, 2 miles away, I'd be paying something pathetic like $100 a year flat. But in IA it's insane

@AshleyNunn This was my first time actually buying a car. My previous two cars were already fully paid for by dead grandparents.

1:30 PM
@Arperum especially wat when you buy a 6 year old used car but pay as if you paid full and it was still worth full price

@BenBrocka But at least it's tax-deductible, because it's important to have more weird shit to have to remember at tax time!

@Sterno You should play it. It's pretty good. Really difficult though.

@GnomeSlice I'm lying. I actually did, for like 20 minutes. I got bored.

I have no clue how much you pay for car insurance you pay around here, I have a car payed from by my employer.

@OrigamiRobot I've been with someone who was buying a new car, and been around for the actual test drive and purchasing, but never actually done it myself.

my car we bought new, but my wife talked them out of a lot of BS charges
the family car was "pre owned" with like 1,000 miles on it
like... they bought it in california, drove it to texas, and then sold it within a couple of weeks
maybe that's cheaper than a moving van? I dunno, doesn't seem that way
anyhow, it was in near perfect condition and we got a significant discount, so eh

Some of these "unethical hacks" are actually "thievery".
> I probably missed the boat on this one, but here goes anyway.
When I was going to college I would walk over to Whole Foods and get some of their most expensive grass fed bone in rib eye steaks from the meat counter. The butcher would wrap them up and slap a price tag on them. If I was getting meat for a BBQ this was sometimes upwards of 200 bucks. Then I would walk over to the bulk grains, put the meat on the scale, and hit print for something like oats. I’d cover the existing label on the meat with my much cheaper oats label, and proceed to self check out. It would ask you to scan the Ba

user15026
@Sterno Oh man, I want to punch that person

@Blem There is still a difference between unethical and illegal.

There's a difference, but they are not mutually exclusive.

@Sterno True.

1:49 PM
I have never been on an airplane.

Yeah, a very large portion of these revolve around some form of "switch out barcodes and get things for cheap and hope you don't get arrested".

@Unionhawk first class, no less

@AshleyNunn Well, to be fair, you're not toying with anyone like that. You're toying with your boss.

user15026
1:51 PM
@Unionhawk A lot of them are straight out theft

@Unionhawk This is why I don't buy physical copies of PC games anymore.

@BenBrocka And if you walk on that plane last, then you're inevitably screwed with no room for you or your bag.

At least not at retail stores.

user15026
@Sterno Yes and no.

You'd still be a world-class shit, though.

user15026
1:51 PM
@Sterno This, I agree with.

I think that falls under "technically correct is best correct"

Since that is an actual thing

@Yuki That depends on what you think the purpose of Goodwill is. If it's to help make you money, then you wouldn't consider it unethical. if it's to distribute items at low cost to people who need them, then it's pretty unethical
I donate a lot of stuff to Goodwill in the theory it will go at a low price to someone who needs it, rather than some jacktard looking to make a few bucks
Then again, if the jacktard really needs those few bucks, I guess it all works out the same

1:54 PM
@Unionhawk ah man I've know people who've gotten burned by that

@Sterno From what I know, it's actually more about giving people jobs than helping people save money.

@Unionhawk The ethical version of this is, if your flight is obviously not going to board with a finger, to be towards the end of the checkin queue, so you get to stand around the least, be towards the last to get on the bus and thus towards the first to get onto the plane

11 mins ago, by Arperum
Animated gifs are still horrible things.

@StrixVaria NO STOP I CAN'T HANDLE THESE

If they're using a finger, well, let most people queue up anyway - there's probably still going to be free cabin space for your hand baggage

But I guess it's unethical in the sense that you skip in front of people who actually use the buzzwords in their resumes properly.

If you're flying with Ryanair and they're using a finger to board the plane, I don't know what to tell you
except maybe "wat"

@Yuki I don't want to work at a firm that uses buzzwords as a base to recruit people.

@badp Never in my experience. People take so much shit in their carry on these days, if you're not among the first to board, your bag is going under.

user15026
Which isn't unethical, it's just cheap?

@Yuki I like how this site makes us complain about "unethical" hacks not actually being unethical and actually unhethical hacks being actually awful
So basically we get to complain about it all!
COMPLAINATHON

It's not a lifehack if it's actually 100% illegal afaic

@Arperum This might work for you too, then. Simply add invisible words like "jailtime", "harassment", "drugs" and "spying" into the résumé.

@AshleyNunn And the price they ask for a bit of stuff on a plane is stupid high

user15026
1:59 PM
@Arperum so true

@AshleyNunn Yeah, but that's not unethical or even awful. It's just planning forward. "Hmm... TSA won't let me bring my discount-sized jug of shampoo, so I should probably buy one of those travel kits at Walgreen's, lot cheaper than buying them at the airport."

@MartinSojka spying might actually be a good thing... seeing as I'm a developer.

The search team would find the deer or dog corpse - on top of a layer of recently moved earth.

@badp what does that mean?

my fingers now hurt and I don't think I'm going to play it again any time soon

user58869
@badp what are you talking about?

sigh

user58869
@badp is aces wild a game?

yes

2:46 PM
googles

@Yuki Apparently you'll get into a horrible accident where your car flips and catches on fire if you do that.

user58869
top result was something to do with brawling action

yes

@badp I've been doing this for a long time

@SaintWacko now we know how to counter you! I think!
because now that you know what our counter is, you can recounter it
and we'll rerecounter it until we start going in circles

Although it doesn't work against my girlfriend. She uses the same strategy. The very first time we tried to use rock-paper-scissors to decide something, I won the first round (random luck), and then we threw the same thing three times in a row and gave up

:D

@SaintWacko If you tie, throw the thing that would have lost next.

@OrigamiRobot We did
That's the problem
We both think at the same speed

@SaintWacko If you opponent knows to do that, throw the same thing.

@SaintWacko that's so cute :P

2:52 PM
So we both predict each other's moves the same distance into the future
@OrigamiRobot I did that the next time
So did she
That's the problem

@SaintWacko Do it the first time.

It doesn't matter how many iterations out I think, she's thought out the same distance

You're not understanding.

Maybe eventually one of us would have done something differently, but we stopped before then

You know your opponent knows to throw the losing thing after a tie. Instead of doing that yourself, throw the same thing.

2:55 PM
@OrigamiRobot Right, but she also knows that I know to throw the losing thing after a tie, so she's also going to throw the same thing

If you both throw the losing thing, it's already to late.
@SaintWacko Then throw the winning thing.

@SaintWacko Next time just play Rock Paper Scissors Saddam.

@badp Why would you play that instead of Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock?

The key is throwing the thing that beats what your opponent throws. It's a really simple game.

@OrigamiRobot I don't think you understand. Whatever prediction I attempt to make about what she's going to play next, she's making the same predictions about me. There's no way to know how far out she's predicting, so I don't know how far out to go

2:57 PM
@Powerlord because tiger hands.

But the only time we've played, we predicted exactly as far as the other every time

@SaintWacko So just go less far out.

@Sterno I probably shouldn't ask what this means. I'm in a vocal ensemble that's singing this, and I'd probably accidentally sing "MOD ABUSE" if I knew
@OrigamiRobot Sigh...

@StrixVaria This... is ridiculous
