@Daи thanks, I probably should have commented to the OP explaining my edit.
Of courde I could also have checked for dupes :S

Q: Why was Zacchaeus saved according to Jesus?

SoldarnalIn Luke 19:1-10 we read the story of Zacchaeus which ends like so: And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to thi...

@JackDouglas Was just going to post that your edit would have made it a dupe anyway

@Soldarnal :)
I'll add a comment/link - your question might help the OP
Hi Jake, my edit would have turned your question into a duplicate of this so it was ill-advised anyway. You might find that question and the answers there useful? — Jack Douglas ♦ 32 secs ago

@Daи I tend to rarely flag and instead VtC but then stuff like this tends to hang out there that is much more obviously systematic theology
Thanks @JackDouglas

A flag without a VtC/DV is a code smell to me
community closures are preferable but failing that I'd rather close a question which already has had a few VtCs
that way I'm just giving a helping hand

@JackDouglas I'd agree; I would prefer the system work without mods as much as possible

@Soldarnal it is getting that way, and as the numbers increase I think it will soon become the norm

@JackDouglas You're up early?

@Davïd the less obvious value of a VtC is that it pushes the question into the review queue
@Soldarnal I know :|
I don't normally have trouble sleeping
but I've got several work issues swirling round my head and some important emails to write

@JackDouglas That's tough. It's brutal when the brain gets stuck on something - especially work-related stuff.

@Soldarnal You're a web developer?
do you wake up thinking about PHP and javascript?

@JackDouglas C#
@JackDouglas Yeah, occasionally my mind gets stuck on a problem all night and it's just exhausting because it's trying to problem solve something that it's not going to figure out a 3am.
And even if it does, it still takes getting in front of the computer to implement it before my brain can move on

3:28 AM
that sounds familiar!

@JackDouglas Just wish there was a button to hit reboot on the mind :)

yup, switch it off and on again
there is only an off switch, no 'reset' :)

@JackDouglas Yikes. Well, hope you make it through the day alright. I'm signing off.

4:11 AM
@Soldarnal Where are you from?

@JackDouglas "Code smell"? Should that one go into the glossary?!
@JackDouglas I take that VtC's are only availabe for questions, though - is that right? Othwerwise, for answers, it's a VtD (and scanning some Q&A's, I see that sometimes I get a link for "delete" below a question, sometimes not).
@Daи And if memory serves (it might not) I think most of my flags yesterday were answers rather than questions.
@JackDouglas And sometimes I'm reluctant to DV, but willing to flag, since it's obvious that it's a "first post" from a new arrival (the "harsh welcome" scenario?). Much happier to DV them what should know better. :)

@Davïd there might be some misunderstanding here: what is the purpose of the flag in that case? Normally an accepted VLQ or NAA flag would result in a deleted answer

@JackDouglas The purpose of the flag is to attract and target mod attention (otherwise I concur with @Soldarnal's sense about things operating as much as possible without mod intervention), with appropriate action and guidance.

OK, but what specific mod action do you hope for
by 'mod' action I mean action that any user can't take?
(eg editing, guidance, commenting, voting)

@JackDouglas If I as a user have the "power" to do that without mod input, then perhaps a step-by-step guide would help; although I think @Daи might have tried to point me in the right direction before.
@JackDouglas Not really sure! The close-and-guide type text.

basically, if you see something that needs nuking, a flag is the right tool for sure
spam, irredeemably poor trash, that sort of thing
when I respond to flags I try and indicate whether I though it was an appropriate use of a flag by marking it 'helpful' or dismissing it to give some feedback

@JackDouglas Helpful and appreciated - I've discovered where I can see that sort of thing in my user page. :)

@Davïd personally I don't like them: I prefer to personalize feedback

9:39 AM
@JackDouglas Yep - but it gives a starting point, so they aren't each created de novo - if that isn't necessary.

re flags: a lot are borderline, and to be clear, I don't mind handling flags, even 'inappropriate' ones!

@JackDouglas :) Good to know!

but I'm aware that mods can get in the way of community action if we aren't careful
@Davïd you've read this? The important take away is that we have 18 'mods' really
(actually more now)
@Davïd it makes me feel useful ;)

@JackDouglas LOL - I'm not sure I had seen that post. This comment rang true:
@Jas3.1: It's terribly unfair to moderators to ask more of them than you do of yourself. Remember, this is a volunteer position. I've given the same advice to Islam... twice. No matter how amazing the moderator team, a site will implode if the high-reputation users refuse to take ownership of their own site. The single biggest problem on this site is that not enough people are participating by doing things like asking questions and voting to remove low-quality content. — Jon Ericson ♦ Dec 7 '13 at 0:02
@JackDouglas I'll try to push the boat out a bit in future - probably next weekend, if the pattern persists! :) Whatever I do, it won't be fatal..... ;)

Hi, @JackDouglas, I flagged this question as "too broad": How can one seek to harmonise the Resurrection Accounts in Matthew, Mark, Luke & John? Code smell?

@Davïd yes that's a good call. Voting is purely subjective so that is totally up to you.
@Davïd I used to never DV a new user, but I changed my policy. You can generally tell if someone is knowledgeable about what they're talking about by reading their posts. Your first post is a prime example, it was obvious you knew what you were talking about. In those cases, I will bend over backwards to help the user learn the ropes. Many new users are 'iffy' in which case I'll usually comment and not DV. But some users' content in my opinion is worthy of a DV.
If they clearly didn't take the time to read the question (many new users respond only to the title without reading the full body of the question, and it shows), that is a careless user and I don't have high hopes. If they treat this like a forum and not a Q&A site and contribute nothing but opinion, they ignored the big site tour links on top, and I'll usually convert it to a comment.
but that's just me
and I may change how I do this again one day :P
@PaulVargas I think 'too broad' is a good call on this one, but I'd like to see some VTCs before I jump in on it.

2:25 PM
@Daи @JackDouglas Sorry, mate. I don't have that privilege yet.
All I can do is flagging.

@PaulVargas ahh, sorry, just noticed that. You're close, though! Only 100 rep away or so

@Daи Very soon.
B-)

@PaulVargas particularly funny when they are referring to OT passages

@Daи I thought it was a good call, too -- but I'm not sure my comment(s) conveyed with sufficient clarity either the scale of the "breadth", or how the scope could be better focussed. Hope OP will try again!

6:23 PM
@Davïd looks like the OP deleted it on his/her own accord. Hopefully they do try again indeed!
