Right...

@NathanOsman It's funny that they are using the angry symbol for a logo...

@NathanOsman hm, so facebook plugin for the comments...

@Mateo we're doing fine...

A: What are my network and computer IP addresses?

Jorge CastroClick on the network icon in the top left of your screen: And then select Connection Information, you will see a window with all the information you need:

I think he wants something like 192.168.0.0/24, but I suck at networking

@jrg not bad

@JorgeCastro unclear question, even as a amateur network tech.

Q: Middle mouse button will not paste

CokesI have a Logitech M560 mouse, but I do not know how to map the middle button to pasting, as is default in my other mouse. I ran 'xev' and clicked the middle button in the white box. The output includes 'button 1'. So, I want to map button 1 to the 'paste selection' as clicking the right and lef...

Q: How to fix my middle mouse button being recognized as left mouse button?

LorenzI've updated my system to 10.10 and since then my "middle mouse button" (on my laptop, under touchpad) is recognized as my "left mouse button". If i open xev, i can see that both, my "left and middle mouse button" are being referred to as "button 1". Can anybody help me to fix this problem and ...

I'm pretty sure the answer to the 2nd will solve the 1st one's issue but the 2nd was asked by a user who's no longer around so it will never be accepted.

1:26 AM
how was it @terdon?

@Braiam You mean the questions?

@NathanOsman want a referral bonus for Digital Ocean? I'm thinking of trying it.

@terdon no, the travel

@Braiam Ah :) Fine, I'm at my parents' place in Greece now

meh, left a comment @terdon

1:29 AM
I was wondering whether those two Qs could be merged. That way, the OP of the second could accept the answer on the first and everyone is happy.
@Braiam Yeah, I saw, ^^^

:15023347 I'm a cat :P
also is a touchpad ;)

@Mateo that one seem even more unhelpful

;)

boo...
meta tags doesn't have special colour

1:37 AM
huh, doesn't work here

is one of the chat easter eggs

hm, not as effective if I need to link it :p

1:39 AM
@Braiam Dunno man, there are many questions that one is clearly about a mouse (not a touchpad) and tagging it as mouse makes sense. I really don't want to get into an edit war with you, just think about it.

@terdon but we have a already, so, it doesn't make sense to use mouse for things about a touchpad or any pointing device
I haven't seen a mouse question were the tag stand of its own

> I have a Logitech M560 mouse, but I do not know how to map the middle button to pasting
No touchpads involved whatsoever.

yeah, I agree with terdon on this one, is too generic, and you woudn't use touchpad for a mouse question...

reading the other question askubuntu.com/q/6404/169736

just as long as it is not "I am using my mouse to open a launcher" aka it is about the setup of the device not just the simple use of it

1:42 AM
For me Ubuntu 14.04 will be downloaded within 1 hour.

@terdon ok, mouse, fine, but find me a question were the tag can stand on it's own

Q: Ubuntu 12.10 Jerky mouse movments

Ba7a7chyAs the Title indicates I have some problem with delicate movement of the mouse in Ubuntu 12.10 fresh installation. hardware tag?

@Braiam You could make a case for being a meta tag, yeah. I don't think I'd agree but you could certainly make a case. Since the tag is actively used though, and since it consequently helps bring in relevant Qs (which is how I found the one that solves it which you gave the OP) I think it should be there.

@terdon I haven't mentioned "meta tag" but "tag that can stand as only tag on the question", please don't mix terms ;)
meta tags means something totally different

@Braiam we all know where you are going with it ;)

1:46 AM
@Mateo prevention is the best course of action

This is funny, we're all walking on egg shells, trying to avoid escalation :)

at this point I think mouse is a "as good as it's going to get" tag, there are some good uses, and some bad ones

starts reading again as it was his intention

I can't see merging it to a more generic, or advocate not using at all

1:55 AM
and why isn't trackpad synonymous with touchpad?
anyone have 5 in that category to suggest?

somehow I have 3 in touchpad... I really don't know why
btw, I don't see anyone actually answering either tag

Huh, apparently I have 9 in touchpad.

@terdon ¬_¬

@Braiam a lot have to do with a certain company says that they have drivers for linux but aren't letting normal people use them...

OK, that means I can make a synonym to right?

1:59 AM
@terdon synonym have always been a black box for me :(
@terdon btw, give me thanks :P askubuntu.com/posts/438179/revisions

@terdon give it a shot, I can't remember if you need it in both, or just the one

@Braiam lol, I'm not touching that guy or his posts again.
@Mateo I will, everyone agrees on trackpad being a synonym to touchpad rather than the other way around right?

And I think you only need 5 in one, don't remember if it's target or source

^ is that legit?
@terdon don't worry, we still have to vote it D:

2:02 AM
@Braiam Think not
@Braiam And good point

yeah, both are the same, so I think touch is the more used

@Mateo So do I but I'm not sure if it's just regional.
Anyway, synonym proposed

What can i do with the questions with 3 close votes(reason development version)?

btw, the xorg <- xserver needs to be nucked
@AvinashRaj I'm sure is because is a bug, not because is 14.04

2:05 AM
@Braiam Yeah, AFAIK they are different beasts.
Huh! Check this out:

Q: I'm seeing stars! (I can see who starred a message and so can you)

DoorknobSo I was making a chatbot in Ruby for SE chat, and I discovered that I could find out the starrer of a message. I'm pretty sure stars, like votes, are supposed to be anonymous. Although this knowledge would help for cases of star trolls like this. Here's the specific slice of code that do...

LATE! I saw it in The Tavern :P
@terdon I think you can vote askubuntu.com/tags/xorg/synonyms

@Braiam Now I'm wondering again... X-org is the X server on Ubuntu so it might make sense to have them as synonyms here after all.
Everything that's tagged xserver here is 99% sure to be about Xorg

ah man: askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/trackball that would be cool, what the one question is asking...
wouldn't that just be an upside-down mouse?

@Mateo I'm amused that it didn't got deleted

@Mateo @Braiam do we keep the xserver->xorg synonym or not?
(sorry for the 3ple ping)

2:11 AM
@Braiam well it's gone now
or did you just take the tag off...
the one trackball question lost to the void forever!

@Mateo I meant the question
@terdon what's "mir"?

@Braiam A question that should be tagged xserver. True, very true.
On U&L I would not hesitate to separate them with extreme prejudice. Here, not so sure.
How many questions do we have that are not about xorg?

also, Ubuntu has different xserver like xephyr and xfbdev
@terdon want tomorrow give it a run? ;)

Yeah, and the xserver tag seems to be used quite correctly for general xserver stuff. Yes, it's actually about xorg, but perhaps no need to tag it that way.

30 mins answering xserver questions?

2:15 AM
shudder
OK, sod it, downvoted the synonym. It's dead now.

yay!

@mateo: wow - thank you.

@terdon what's the regex to match exactly one character?

@AvinashRaj .

for example if a line consists of many a's. What's the regex to match only first a?

2:26 AM
That will match everything but a newline.

@NathanOsman exactly one character though :)
@AvinashRaj depends on the tool. Usually simply a

@Avinash: just use a literal "a".

for example: echo aaaaaaaaaaaa | sed 's/a/a /'
$ echo aaaaaaaaaaaa | sed 's/a/a /'
a aaaaaaaaaaa

@NathanOsman cool, I'll save that, might be a few days before I sit down and do it

@terdon that match the first "a", if he needs to match any a he should use /g

for example if a line consists of many a's. What's the regex to match only first a?

thanks..

You're welcome.

is that possible to provide condition on sed?

What kind of condition?

like in awk we put the condition in form of regex. awk '$1=="blahblah" { print 0}'

2:33 AM
In sed too, if I remember correctly
$ echo -e "aaa\nbaa\ncaa" | sed '/b/{s/a/A/}'
aaa
bAa
caa
That means: if the line matches b, replace the 1st a with A
Personally, if I find myself using conditionals in sed, I start thinking that I'm using the wrong tool.
That's just me though.

what in case of 2nd a
like this
echo -e "aaa\nbaa\ncaa" | sed '/b/{s/.a/A/}'

Hey everybody.

@AvinashRaj Yeah, but that will delete the 1st a

yep

What is the best Remote desktop client?
grdesktop is stopped since 2012.

2:39 AM
@xiaodongjie xvnc?
depends on your backend

@Braiam Oh, as grdesktop, using RSP protocol client.

can this get another delete vote askubuntu.com/q/194059/169736

done @Braiam

this will need several but anyway, lets the votes pile up askubuntu.com/q/1437/169736

@Braiam i think most of the del votes on bad questions are thrown by you and Eric . Why other 10kers failed to do that?

2:46 AM
@AvinashRaj ask them ;)

@Braiam I think xvnc is not RDP.

@xiaodongjie RDP smells like a windows protocol, so I have no idea

Hmm, gonna have fun upgrading to 14.04 when my holiday is over

upgrading is not fun. it is boring. :-P

My boss doesn't see the point in the upgrade, so in order to it I'll need to do a hot clone of the server onto the retired server, so I have a standby/test machine

same here. check this ->
cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=6.06
DISTRIB_CODENAME=dapper
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS"

@Rinzwind my upgrade took 1 minute yesterday... \o/

9:44 AM
I managed to rsync it into a VM, but then the management software it runs had a meltdown over the active NIC being eth2
...ouch

@Takkat my system was up to date on release :(

I only had to upgrade few missing packages from 14.04. Beta2
<-- always upgrades 1-2 days before or 1-2 weeks after release

I have a fairly compelling argument for the boss though, the server's running an old version of Zentyal, so it is unsupported and the new version happens to have high availability, which management desperately want
Although HA is going to be fairly silly given that both servers run off the same UPS
I do have hopes that the upgrade on the client machines will fix a somewhat wierd Lubuntu bug which has been annoying users for some time

@takkat you are the wubi expert of the 2 of us? >:-D

I haven't been able to replicate it, but at least one employee every day has their mouse buttons stop working, until they either restart or alt+f4 all open windows

9:50 AM
@Rinzwind Wubi? What is that? I never ever touched it after I heard of so many incidents. ;)

@Rinzwind i think our wubi expert is bcbc

just now installed 14.04, struggling with the first sudo apt-get update command for half-an-hour.

Q: what are the 3 flavours in ubuntu 14.04 LTS

KIRAN K Ji can found these 3 flavours in ubuntu download page.but previously we can found only 32 and 64 bit.so can anybody explain about each 64-bit 32-bit (for machines with less than 2GB RAM) 64-bit Mac (AMD64) Note:I have i5-4gb system.

9:55 AM
@AvinashRaj try with a mirror on a timezone where people sleep now...?

@Takkat and counterd that >:)

superb @Takkat. I'm from India, mirror from which location did i have to choose?

it's so often: Please help me to achieve this (but what it is I want I keep secret).
@AvinashRaj no idea, really... can we still chose a "best" mirror from settings? We used to some releases ago but I haven't done this recently.

thanks :-)

you may try to start with the main server.
but after a release we generally have heavy load on all of them. :/

10:00 AM
see the drop down here:
it says "32 bit for less than 2 Gb"
should that not be 4GB?

@Rinzwind not sure I understand "web-e caved in by your comment :=D "

@don.joey he deleted his answer with 3 upvotes on the wubi q >:)

aah :) that's a good one

@Rinzwind it shold say 32-bit for an old 32-bit CPU.

@takkat did you see the meta post from don.joey? :D

10:05 AM
tsk

@Rinzwind "a bit of backstory" :D

my rep farm is working for you... :/

hmmm who is good with counting?
How many non-lt's are there between lts's?
3?

.10 + .04 + .10 = 3

10:12 AM
@Rinzwind that's a valid answer

@don.joey user is fishing :P correct method is to install 14.04 >:D

72 kB/s download speed from de mirror for a tiny dist-upgrade.
People in Germany appear to make use of the bank holiday and the poor weather to upgrade their Ubuntu

my system at home is providing torrents :=)
1 of them just ran over 50Gb upload

my desktop still is on 12.04 (and it will be for a while)

@Rinzwind I am amazed so many people use wubi

10:21 AM
Those people either use Wubi or they delete all their partitions on installing... Wubi appears to be the better option to them.
