Wait... definitely just cooling. The inter card pads are still exposed. Definitely not electrical connection. The connection could still happen though. it's left exposed in the photo.

hm, maybe they are amd? if you look at the sil, I only see two sections (or the picture is too blurry to tell)

@Mateo I think you got it on the card above. People in positions to build like this tend to like benchmarking software, so nvidia ftw tends to happen... since some of the big benchmarks only work on nvidia.

I read some of the wiki on sli, and they say it can work without the bridge, but should be used for the higher end cards

I wouldn't expect it to be low end on a rig like this...

Scalable Link Interface (SLI) is a brand name for a multi-GPU technology developed by NVIDIA for linking two or more video cards together to produce a single output. SLI is an application of parallel processing for computer graphics, meant to increase the processing power available for graphics. The acronym SLI was first used by 3dfx for Scan-Line Interleave, which was introduced to the consumer market in 1998 and used in the Voodoo2 line of video cards. After buying out 3dfx, NVIDIA acquired the technology but did not use it. NVIDIA later reintroduced the SLI name in 2004 and intend...

is it a litecoin mining machine or something?
if so then they're probably ATI cards

@JorgeCastro yeah opencl was easier to get going on there

12:22 AM
plus they say it beats the titan...

was that a copy-cat?

exact copy, plagarism
> One that closely imitates or mimics another. To act as an imitator or mimic.

Think they got him, I can't click on anything without seeing a panda fall over

nice prominent position of the ubuntu logo ;)

anyone have time for someone who installed linux mint who's wanting to switch over to ubuntu instead? i know mint is basically ubuntu, but i'm just not liking it as much as i thought i would. just have a question about my install
or is this not the appropriate place to ask these things?

"i know mint is basically ubuntu" err.. no
they are different

how to install ubuntu is an ok question, but yeah what he said ^

isn't it a fork or whatever? sorry, trying to get a bit more into linux than i have in the past

12:56 AM
@Braiam Not much...

@MattD the devs maintain that ubuntu was never "forked"

Anyway, what's the question @MattD?

alright, i picked up an extra ssd and hdd to setup a linux environment inside my existing machine because reasons. the system already had a samsung ssd and toshiba hdd with windows 8.1 on them. i picked up a pny ssd and WD hdd to use for linux
firing up the machine brings up grub (or at least that's what i think it is), so my question is do i need to do all that fixboot and fixmbr stuff on windows then install ubuntu over the drives mint is on, or can i just wipe the drives with mint on it and install ubuntu instead?

@MattD could you just go directly to the relevant part and tell us, what you intend to do and with what?

see above
i figured knowing about my setup would be relevant

12:59 AM
most of the time only to know how you managed to reach that point

@MattD Oh, no, just go ahead and install. There should be no issues. Just make sure to format the / partition of the Mint install. You can keep your home but that might cause some minor issues.
The Ubuntu installer will happily delete Mint and install Ubuntu.

@MattD if you're going to have a ton of OSes on one system consider just using the BIOS boot options, things can get tricky
especially with UEFI partitions, etc.

not tons of OSes, just windows and linux on their own drives

@JorgeCastro I think he just wants to replace Mint with Ubuntu, there shouldn't be any issues there should there?

and correct, i just want to know if i can boot ubuntu off a usb, and have it wipe the drives with mint and install ubuntu instead
without having to do anything on the windows end first

1:03 AM
As long as the Mint is already working correctly, you have either fixed or avoided the likely problems. You should be able to just install Ubuntu over Mint.
@JorgeCastro @Braiam am I missing something obvious?

@terdon yeah, "DO A BACKUP!"
:P

True dat

i've got backups of anything important that i need

@MattD Then just go ahead and install.

i work in IT. i may be fairly raw with linux, but i'm not that dumb :P
right-o, thanks

1:05 AM
@MattD In that case, you know better than I that "working in IT != not dumb" :P

true enough

ah ok that should be fine

ah, here is the quote: http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=8A2BB6C9-C190-9091-179DD34417541B08
> "Ubuntu was never "forked". It was and still is used as a package base and regarded as an upstream component. Why Ubuntu? Because it was (and still is) the best package base."

@Mateo Heh, s/Ubuntu/Debian/ and it still makes sense :)
True for both I think

1:40 AM
heh

meta.stackoverflow changed to meta.SE

@AvinashRaj why?
those answers are not "worth of keeping"

i mean delete all the answers and don't delete the dupe question.
@Braiam upvoted Answers on that question are already mentioned in the original one..

then is not merge, just dupe and delete answers

yep
@Braiam do you know the releasing time of 14.04?

@AvinashRaj nobody does

A: At what time will the upcoming Ubuntu release be made available?

akgranerYou can find the expected release date on the Release Schedule. In an interview on Ubuntu-User Kate Stewart, the Ubuntu Release Manager at Canonical, outlines how the release announcement works: The release team needs to do final checks to make sure all the right bits are in the right places...

2:33 AM
is that it comes to know before 1 hour or half-an-hour?

is not hour based, it will be released when it's ready

ohh
@Braiam don't forget to ping me after it comes.
I have a SE android app. I get notification.

@AvinashRaj subscribe yourself to the mailing list, I'm not pending of such events

how?

3:03 AM
@Seth @Braiam if I develop a solution, can I ask to reopen the question you closed?

3:37 AM
@Danatela you can ask. Doesn't necessarily mean it will be reopened though.
Probably will, but depends on the question.

It's the pidgin hide groups question

3:52 AM
Oh. No, can't reopen that
I'm pretty sure I left a comment explaining why
@Danatela what was your solution?
@Danatela could you perhaps translate this? askubuntu.com/q/448822/44179
(please)

@Seth I'm pretty sure is OT

hmm it even not question but a reply to something

> lang: ru - создание и подпись локального репозитория (debian)

it will not be clearer if translated

Already unclear, but might as well see what he's even saying
@Danatela ah, okay. Thanks!

3:56 AM
should I post the translation here or inside the q?

Inside the Q.

Is there any live presentation that we can follow?

Google's own camera app now encourages you to shoot in landscape
@IonicăBizău Nah. But everything will be covered on various Ubuntu blogs like 2buntu, OMG! Ubuntu e.t.c

But why?

6:47 AM
Introducing... 2buntu.com

Today we have launched a new website!
(Well, okay, the content isn't all new. And the domain name isn't new.)
(But the site design is new. And the underlying blog engine is new.)

Hi
Hows everyone ?

fine fine fine and you @bhuvin
@NathanOsman looks nice :-) it has the distinct Ubuntu look and feel.

Hey @Rinzwind - Going good
Man there is a fundamental question ...
For the connection sockets, how much memory does it occupy .. ?
in Ubuntu / Linux ?

connection sockets?!

7:25 AM
i mean Sockets ..
the way through which the communication occurs

but those do not occupy "memory'. Those are just files on the system.
used to transport data :P
this is interesting:

@fossfreedom you're too fast.
did Canonical announce the releasing time of 14.04?

@AvinashRaj I don't think so

Q: Too many upvotes cause the sidebar vote counter split into two lines

Minato NamikazeOn the sidebar, if there are more than 3 digits in the votes, it starts to split into two lines, and the second line does not carry the background colour of the first line (For instance, green if it has an accepted answer) like so: On a website like Meta.SE, such amounts of votes are common, s...

This bugs me :P

@AvinashRaj Somewhere around 7 in the evening

Thanks @MinatoNamikaze , I also had the same confusion

Q: How can i get the version pgrep & pkill commands?

GabrielI looked at the manpages and there is no -v or --version argument for pgrep or pkill. How can i get some info on the version? I'm asking because on my version of ubuntu man pgrep is giving me a different manual then on my server. Idealy i woul install the same version on my machine too.

@terdon still here?
do a apt-cache dumpavail | grep ^Task and be amazed :=)

Dan
so few
only 7383 lines

@MinatoNamikaze here is hoping the do not change the url for this release :D

Dont we have a is1404releasedyet.com?
If I had the domain I could have xD

Its already 4:00PM here in India and still no 14.04 to download ;(

10:48 AM

@MinatoNamikaze mods so should have a way to post messages above the list :D

@Rinzwind Isn't that called pinning? :P

dunno :=)

11:25 AM
Is trusty released yet?

@Mitch if you're around, could you migrate this to U&L rather than just closing it?

12:04 PM
It's exactly 17 of april 14:04
Is it released now :P
Awh, they missed there dead line :(

Hope we dont crash canonical's servers!! :-P

We definitely will!
Am gonna download ten of them trusty iso's, just for backup! :P

@Venki torrents for the win

Cant get you..
Can u come again?? @Rinzwind

@Venki hmm? the Ubuntu 14.04 torrent download will never crush their servers :=)

12:12 PM
Oh !! Right!!

technically it downloads 1 copy of the server and then spreads it out over all the users downloading the torrent

I. Have. No. Words

Yeah P2P...

Dan
@blade19899 I can't seem to figure out which is the (for the lack of a better word on my mind now:) weirdest part about that bag.

@Dan Same here. I can't think of a word. Except for: WTF.

Dan
12:24 PM
Should start purging a few ppa while waiting for 14.04

@Dan Clean install! Always. Never did a upgrade go well with me! Never! So, clean install!

"checking for updates"
flexget at home has not picked up 14.04 yet :D

Now, is there some way by which i will know that I have upgraded to original release from beta ?

@blade19899 what?

@MinatoNamikaze Nobody knows!

12:30 PM
@terdon Your wish has been granted

Hmm..

no not "Hmm.." but "thank you Wim" :=)

Maybe.. but there is no system tab in system monitor... @Rinzwind Any other means?

TODAY IS THE DAY!

12:39 PM
Yeah But which hour which minute and which second is THE HOUR THE MINUTE and THE SECOND ?? !!

ah darn now even Jorge joins the 14.04 parade :D
oh @JorgeCastro are you connected to the ubuntu wiki?

@Rinzwind he's a Ubuntu member, so he can modify certain parts of the wiki

@Braiam you upvoted my answer just now? on the security setting? >:)

nope

Those who are waiting for 14.04... I just saw this ... timeanddate.com/countdown/…

12:49 PM
ehm. who said it is released at 2 GMT? >:)

Much funnier.. see this : mycountdown.org/…

Dan
@blade19899 Too lazy to do that. Besides, I like how upgrades work in Ubuntu. New stuff start changing suddenly while the system is upgrading itself.

1:06 PM
@Rinzwind Why have you deleted your answer?

Q: sudo update-manager -d non-gui only alternative

Ionică Bizăusudo update-manager -d checks if upgrading to the latest devel release is possible (man update-manger). But it opens a visual application (winodws, buttons and so on). Is there any command alternative that does the same thing but in terminal only (without launching any window)?

because it does not answer the question
you asked for "devel" and I answerd for normal update/grade

Dan
@Rinzwind You're lazier that I am. You removed the up from upgrade to type less! :P

@Dan :D :D
to busy checking the 14.04 iso page >:)

:-)
Why dont we create a little script that will check that for us?

is that 14.04 released?
@Rinzwind did your crontab finds any updates?

1:12 PM
@AvinashRaj what crontab?
I have flexget scan for the 14.04 torrent every 15 minutes :D so transmission will pick it up the moment it arrives. (and it will mail me too when it does :D )

@Rinzwind I'm also looking out for 14.04, and I didn't see your answer, but once noticed I deleted mine, and upped yours.
Is it available for download now?.

nope

@Rinzwind > Upgrade is for going to a new release.
do-release-upgrade upgrade the release to newer version i think.

@Mitch it is not mine :( it is community so no rep for me :(
@AvinashRaj you are missing a detail: he is asking for "-d" equivalent. -d does a -check-, Your comnmand actually starts the upgrade too. ;-)
oh wait Mitch Now I see. There was an influx in upgrade topics all of a sudden

inform me also when 14.04 arrived.

1:17 PM
this one popped up just now: askubuntu.com/questions/110477/…

Ping me too :P

@AvinashRaj no. I want your bandwith
@MinatoNamikaze no. I want your bandwith

@Rinzwind I'll give you a mirror in exchange :P

(A mirror of the iso's, not a real mirror)

1:19 PM
@Braiam hi, can you explain this edit? I mean this question clearly is about 14.04 right? why not just keep the tag? askubuntu.com/posts/448949/revisions

@don.joey future-proff

@Mitch yes I realized it later :=)

@Braiam you mean for 14.10?

yeah

According to my bandwidth, it takes around 11 hours to download a 700 mb file.

1:21 PM
@don.joey check it now

@AvinashRaj you need a better isp or move to another country ;-)

lol

@Braiam the Q is not only about server images, though. I mean it is about any image.

@Rinzwind i'm from a rural area. So that my bandwidth is too low.

@don.joey I presume by comments that he found that the server image didn't had python2

1:22 PM
@Braiam maybe we should keep this as a 14.04 Q, because the answers for 14.10 might be really different.

@Rinzwind what do you mean by connected? I can edit it like everyone else if that's what you're asking.

@Braiam I know, but he never said taht was his Q

@AvinashRaj so rural India? I am from rural Netherlands ( :D ). iso takes SECONDS to download at work (I am sitting on backbone :D )

@don.joey why? you think they will include python again?

@Rinzwind stoef
@Braiam I'm not sure the desktop image will be python2-free

1:24 PM
@don.joey exactly

@Rinzwind it takes only seconds to download a 700 mb iso file? You're soooooooooooooo lucky :-)

if anyone is going to search why his Ubuntu doesn't have python2 from installation, what's the most likely search query?

When will 14.04 be proposed as an upgrade by the update-manager?

oh I might have found a discussion point.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ImprovedNetworking/KernelSecuritySettings
says: net.ipv4.conf.all.secure_redirects = 1
but I saw 3 sources (redhat, CSI (=FBI security) and an NSA reference it is best to keep this on 0.

oh that's a spec from a UDS session

1:25 PM
@AvinashRaj I am a coder that works at the same place as an ISP (but I am not part of the isp_ so we got some bandwith here ;-)

are we setting that setting?

@Braiam python2 14.10 not installed

@don.joey ;)

:)
@Braiam anyway I am tempted to rollback... are you OK with that?

@JorgeCastro yes. only 1 thing I ran into: those references all refer to server setups. and I was wondering if ubuntu wiki takes the desktop as a default (where 1 might be less secure but still correct).

1:28 PM
@Dan Seriously? i haven't done an upgrade via update manager since 11.04. Might give that, and if things mess up: clean install ;)

How much more time left?
Please tell me it's within 20 minutes of now

Dan
@blade19899 I do it with do-release-upgrade i never upgrade using GUI

@Dan I'll give that a try!

@Braiam It wasn't me.

When trusty gets released

1:32 PM
@don.joey I'm waiting for google to cache it, to decide for the best title
apparently google hasn't done it's magic

Let's get notified when they will update the page!

@IonicăBizău lol nice :D

Thanks! ;-)
I started it as daemon via screen. :-D

I bet they release it in 1h23. just before I go home

1:38 PM
@MinatoNamikaze Geeks prefer terminal tools. Haha!

@IonicăBizău I rather code something to do a task for me than manually type the code for that task :=)
even if the 1st takes more time _o-

Me too. :-)

I am not a shell expert, but this was very simple.

Open up your computer at 2.30 AM IST ;-) .. jokes apart. You can upgrade to beta now. There won't be much changes on last day. — Web-E 1 min ago

1:43 PM
close this one too askubuntu.com/q/448295/169736

Dan
Made a script that checks it 14.04 is released every 2 mins, when it's available i get a notification - At least i think i did :D

meh, if you are so impatient, just rsync the image instead. That way you always have the latest image already downloaded...

Dan
but that's not as cool

what?
is less cool for the servers being queried with HTTP petitions every couple minutes from the same user

@Dan Why not use an already built one? github.com/IonicaBizau/page-changed :-)

1:54 PM
@mitch why, thank you sir!

@Braiam yes he did

@don.joey 1-2 weeks depending bugs
