3:00 PM
bleh Fonts look terrible in Ubuntu, I think AA is not working ._,

@Bob I can't find any sites (not even cpuboss) that will compare the Pentium N3520 vs the Snapdragon 800 though

Bob
@allquixotic Where's that 7.5W from?

heh, @Sathya s blog was the second link when I googled on how to enable AA

@Bob you

Bob
The Z3470 has a "SDP" of 2W
@allquixotic O_O

3:01 PM
@Bob yeah, I read that in another article
basically Snapdragons run between 2.5W (on the low end) to 5W (tablet-sized)

Bob
@allquixotic That's not a mobile chip.

@Bob I'm not saying it is -- but the power profile of the N3520, which is in my Yoga 2 ultrabook, is only about 1.5x - 2x bigger than the power profile of a Snapdragon
I was looking for benchmarks to see if the actual performance is on that scale too or if Qualcomm is more power-efficient (or if Intel is)

Bob
Those are the phone/tablet chips.

@Bob So this dude Ted Nelson came up with the word "Hypertext"?

Bob
@sammyg Read the article.
> Intel officially launches its latest LTE modem and first 22nm smartphone SoC.
> On paper the 7260 is a competitor to Qualcomm's forthcoming 9x35 modem, however it's built on TSMC's 28nm process compared to the 20nm node that Qualcomm is using for 9x35.
o.O
Intel is using TSMC?!

3:05 PM
@Bob LOLWAT.

that's super bizarre... so you're telling me the SoC package contains a TSMC modem and an Intel 22nm application processor?

Bob
Intel is at a fab disadvantage by using TSMC??

Frankeinstein

Bob
> Intel claims its architecture is extremely power efficient despite the foundry disadvantage (an admittedly unusual position for Intel to be in). It will take Intel 2 - 3 years to bring its modem manufacturing in-house.
YOU DON'T SAY
They've had a fab advantage for how many years now?
> In the first half of the year, Intel will bring out Merrifield - this is the dual-core Silvermont based SoC that's effectively the phone version of Bay Trail. Despite being aimed at the performance and mainstream segments, Intel expects it to be performance competitive with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 and Apple's A7. On the modem side, Intel hopes to pair Merrifield with the XMM 7260 LTE modem.
I wonder how the power consumption is.
The previous-gen tablet chip had a SDP of 2 W.
Based on other SDP:TDP ratios, that's probably a TDP of 4-6 W.

3:09 PM
> It will take Intel 2 - 3 years to bring its modem manufacturing in-house.
I guess modem manufacturing takes some special processes that the good ol' Ivy/Haswell foundries can't do yet

Bob
@allquixotic If you look at the (Intel-provided) benchmarks on that page, they supposedly beat the snapdragon 800 by a wide margin.

@Bob if they're releasing a Silvermont (which is what my Yoga 2 has, lol) for smartphones/tablets and hoping it's competitive with the Snapdragon 800, they're in for a world of disappoint, since the 801 and 810 are already marching toward release

Bob
I'm also surprised to see how far ahead the A7 perf is.

hell, the 801 is out

Bob
Still never going to get an iOS device.

3:11 PM
Hey all. Would this be on topic on Super User?

Q: Is a popular site like www.google.com served up by one computer?

SharkCopIn basic networking, we talk about DNS servers, that they resolve human readable addresses (www.google.com) into an actual IP address. As far as I understand, at least using the basics, an IP address refers to a single device (say a router). Surely, www.google.com cannot be served up by one compu...

Bob
@YannisRizos Ehhh... touchy.
Some of those are sometimes accepted, sometimes not.
They do tend to gain a bunch of upvotes and stay.

that's a marginal question for SU

Yes, it's a bit bikeshed-y... Well, I guess there isn't much value in sending it here then. The OP already got a correct answer, we'll just keep it closed (and eventually deleted) on ProgSE. Thanks.

Bob
@allquixotic The Merrifield (Silvermont) ones are already released (dual-core).

@Bob ahh

Bob
3:15 PM
Second half of the year, they're apparently going to release quad-core versions.
Heck, if the dual-core can outperform the snapdragon 800 by that much...
'course, that's making the assumption that you'll ever need more than two cores/hot threads on a phone.

zz fglrx doesn't work with the 3.11 kernel >.<

@Bob i didn't realize that was a dual core -- nice -- the only thing I worry about is of course power consumption when you start throwing a quad-core x86_64 into a smartphone

hi @hack.

@HackToHell version?

you pinged about French on Twitter?

3:18 PM
@allquixotic I think it's nearly a year old :P

Bob
@allquixotic Remember that all these benchmarks are from Intel themselves, though.
Those chips haven't made their way into any devices yet.

@jokerdino Hi, I think so

@HackToHell update your fglrx to the latest beta

@HackToHell: Hmm. I am already doing the course. Jump in already?

I happen to be at 12.104
@jokerdino Okay, I'll try ! :D

Bob
3:19 PM
@allquixotic Intel's press release is saying they can last 30% longer than the S4 o.O

@Bob the Yoga 2 has a 34 Watt-hour battery to keep an 11" screen and a Bay Trail-M powered for up to 6 hours

@HackToHell: Good!

Bob
Remains to be seen just how true this is in real devices.

how many watt-hours would you need to have a smartphone that can go all day on a 5.5" screen and a Silvermont-based Merrifield?

Bob
@allquixotic Apparently ~8

3:21 PM
@HackToHell ancient -- use 13.12 at least
@Bob 8 Watt-hours? 8000 mAh? battery? in a smartphone? !!no

Bob
@allquixotic 8 Wh != 8000 mAh

oops
totally missed that

Bob
8 Wh = 2150 mAh @ 3.7 V
Perfectly reasonable.

ahhhh

that phone costs 1k USD

3:23 PM
anyway, I doubt any manufacturer besides Motorola would have the gall to charge customers ~$150 extra (on top of the normal price) for extra battery life, so I'll probably be going with Motorola for my next phone, and Motorola will probably use the Snapdragon 801 (the 810 is out too late for their next phone)

Bob
:P
@ThatBrazilianGuy has already expressed his displeasure

@HackToHell wait, there's a smartphone that costs $1000 USD? I've never seen one

Bob is before us everywhere.

Bob
@allquixotic Probably the equivalent in local currency.

What was the word? Omnipresent?

3:24 PM
@allquixotic It costs that much unlocked here

Bob
Hmm, Moorefield also doubles the caches.

It's actually 848$

Bob
And better graphics, too.

Gah, I need to update Xorg to update fglrx

Bob
@allquixotic If this turns out to be true in the real world, my next phone may well have an Intel SoC :P

3:26 PM
@Bob promising, but one of the biggest hurdles for x86(_64 or even _32) Android will be all the apps that have ARMv7-only natives

Bob
Ya.
Though, Android x86 support is increasing.
@allquixotic That's mostly browsers, video players and games.

usually the "choice" between natives on Android is "do you want natives that support NEON or not" -- in any case, ARM

Bob
Games are they only ones I see not updating.

@Bob considering how infrequently you upgrade, Intel may already have a 90% market share on Android devices by the time you upgrade next :D

> X.Org X Server 1.11.3

!!tell 14784312 no
!!tell Cavil live

Bob
@allquixotic Hey, it's only been two and a quarter years since my last phone.
I just tend to get them shortly before the new one comes out :\
> Still going to be much slower then AMD jaguar
random comment on random blog
!!no

@Bob "ONLY".
in January 2012 I had the original Razr Maxx, IIRC
since then I've upgraded to the Razr Maxx HD, then the Droid Maxx :P
my upgrade frequency is directly related to the expense of the device :P

Bob
@allquixotic I think the best part is the possibility of Windows x86 on a phone :P

I'll have my car for many many many more years, even though its bluetooth 2.1 is hideously obsolete and doesn't work well, and I need a hybrid for all the damn stop and go on the highway (kills fuel efficiency)
I'll have my 3770K at least through all of 2014 at a minimum
but my Droid Maxx phone is probably going to be replaced before January 1, 2015. I won't be able to resist the $700 outlay to the next gen

Bob
3:32 PM
I tend to either keep using things till they break, or get noticeably slow.
Haven't really reached that point yet.
Heck, unless I seriously ramp up my phone usage, this should last me at least another 3-4 years.
Assuming it doesn't break.

for me, !!s/phone/modem-router/ and you can see the need for me to upgrade :P

Bob
@allquixotic I've upgraded my networking equipment many times more than my PC and phone :P
Though, I did buy a few low-powered devices in the meantime.

@Bob well my phone IS my networking equipment :D

Bob
Lumia 520.
-_-

I think my Yoga 2 does 802.11ac (not 100% sure), so if I upgraded my phone to a 802.11ac model, I would get an 802.11ac USB stick for my desktop
right now I have a 3-4 year old 802.11n Draft Spec 2.0 USB stick in my computer, which works okay
it's Linksys by Cisco
Draft n 2.0 seems to interoperate reasonably well with "final" n devices like my phone
and it's dual-band, so yeah, it's using the 5 GHz spectrum

Bob
3:36 PM
I just have a wired network. Like a sane person :P

@Bob if I go wired, I lose native IPv6 :(
only the wifi hotspot does native IPv6 properly

Bob
:(
I probably won't get native IPv6 until sometime around 2040...

you know, I'm tempted to ask DediDirect how much money I could save by going IPv6-only on a dedicated server, and see if I can leave Hetzner for them while keeping a similar price point
if chat.SE supports IPv6, I'd be golden

Bob
@allquixotic Just be careful...
WholesaleInternet had a power outage.

Bob
3:38 PM
I received no notification.
zero

@Bob that sucks

Bob
A whole day after I had to submit a support ticket asking why.

we finally resolved the problem I was having with my buddy's server at DediDirect
apparently there was a guy being slammed by a DDoS in the same cabinet as my server
he disconnected the DDoS victim

Bob
It's sad when $8/year VPS providers can communicate better than $80/month dedi providers.
@allquixotic Only found out when all the vservers went down, then had to snoop around the IPMI logs and system logs.
Urk.

@Bob -_-

Bob
3:40 PM
I'm kinda happy I wasn't using RAID - I don't think there's a BBU in there.

at least my LSI 2-port RAID controller at Hetzner has a BBU

Bob
@allquixotic Apparently they had three outages in quick succession, which killed one of the UPSes. That just happened to be powering thousands of dedi servers -_-

Bob
@allquixotic If DediDirect is good, I might consider switching.

well here's a great example of what GPU I won't be buying!
@Bob U.S. -- did you end up going with AUS, or did you go US?

Bob
3:42 PM
A guy over in the SF chat suggested ServerMania. They have a really good network to me, too.

@Bob it's a very small-time op with only a few employees, but very affordable

Bob
But I'm having trouble convincing myself to spend that much more.

he still hasn't gotten back to me on my request for a quote for the server I want :P

Bob
@allquixotic AUS is completely unaffordable :\

that's my deal with DediDirect, except free upgrade to 24 GB DDR2
still Core 2 era Xeon, but they sell some newer (relatively speaking) ones too
I don't think they sell anything Ivy or newer, probably due to prohibitive purchase cost of those procs
looks like they run E3-1230V2s too, but they're out of stock
and it looks like they jacked up prices outside of the WHT deal-takers (like me)
maybe i can get you in at a lower rate since i'm an existing customer
they don't allow unsolicited bulk email (spam), and other fairly obvious bad behavior, but their AUP is reasonable. they even allow IRC

Bob
3:49 PM
@allquixotic That price per month... heck, I almost want to downgrade :P

@Bob even more impressively, if you manage to scrounge up $840 USD in one go, you get a $315 value worth of server (9 months) in addition to that, free
'course you're stuck with it for 2 years, but if it satisfies your needs.....

Bob
@allquixotic Damn it, stop tempting me :P

"spend $840, get $315 of value free" is nice. I didn't go that route yet, and I wouldn't suggest you do either; if you were to go with DD, I'd say go month to month at first, and ONLY IF it rocks, do something like a 6 month prepay, and if even that goes swimmingly, THEN, consider 24 months

Bob
@allquixotic That's how much it costs me for 10 months here :\
But it is a higher tier.

@Bob I preemptively emailed my contact at DD to see if he can get you in at the $35/mo level on that box -- I didn't commit to anything, I'm just seeing if the offer is still available
if it's available I'll let you know that you at least have the option of doing it

Bob
3:54 PM
@allquixotic Heh, thanks.

Tonight I had a nightmare and @bob was in it.

Bob
But it's also hard dropping what I currently have :P
@ThatBrazilianGuy :(

@ThatBrazilianGuy did he try to sell you a server?

Worse. Someone was forcing him to use UOL as hosting provider

O_O

3:56 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy did he bear his fox-teeth at them?

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy UOL?

You know, the one that started as a news portal. And whose support one told me to fix an error 500 issue by resetting my modem
*once
Damn Mobile
@allquixotic no, he had no teeth, in fact on my dream nobody in RA had physical bodies, everyone was just chat messages disembodied
Except for @journeymangeek, he's ALWAYS a dog.
2

@ThatBrazilianGuy was OliverSalzburg at least bald in your dream?
or was he not there?

I don't remember much, except a discomfort for having to deal with the terrible hosting
Bad support, follow you even on your dreams
"Sir have you tried waking up then falling asleep again?"

we should analyze your dream in terms of Freudian psychology. your inclusion of Bob in your dream and discomfort related to his discomfort with his hosting situation (forced upon him by an insidious salesman) indicates that you have a Freudian desire to see Bob comforted and alleviate his hosting woes

4:02 PM
@allquixotic just what crap have you typed out?

you should definitely avoid offering Bob hosting at your university though. it'd be down 80% of the time, and when it's up, have about 5 Kbps throughput
@Braiam sarcastic crap

No, I have a desire to see bad hosting going out of business.

@Bob aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade going on on superuser VM at the moment
then going to manually reboot cavil (why hasn't cron been restarting him??!?!)

Bob

so far, libc upgrade but I don't see an openssl upgrade yet

Bob
@allquixotic Better question: why is he dying??!?!

It's not THAT bad where I work. Speed can reach 100mbps on the main campus, and if your server goes down you only have to chase the whole campus for the responsible department

Bob
Might have to revive my plans for retarded-redundancy
@allquixotic openssl version -a afterwards, check build time (should be on the 8th of April)

@Bob cuz he's lonely :(

(By foot, usually)

Bob
4:06 PM
@CanadianLuke Those are so so bad, they're not even good.

@Bob I laughed my ass off! I LMAOd!

Mimi "Meme" L'mao, from France?
@Bob better question: why does it take Debian so long to come up with a security fix? apparently they've approved the source package but it'll take "hours" to build and push out to the mirrors.

Bob
4:22 PM
Hm. Apparently the new Nvidia beta drivers massively improve gaming performance.
@allquixotic Hm? I installed the fixed version about 14 hours ago.
> wheezy (security) 1.0.1e-2+deb7u6 fixed
@allquixotic What are you running?
wait, u6? o.O
I installed u5... there was another patch?

@allquixotic stable (security) and sid are patched several hours ago... testing is still vulnerable :P

@Braiam blah. come on!

Bob
@allquixotic Testing has a fix according to this: debian.org/security/2014/dsa-2896

@Bob jessie on SU box; wheezy on my box

Bob
@allquixotic I updated wheezy just fine. I'm running sid on the vservers.

4:28 PM
sid on a server? lolol living on the edge man

Bob
Wait. Was it jessie or sid? o.O

jessie is testing
sid is always unstable

Bob
Wait, they're running jessie.

4:40 PM
@Psycogeek Why do you punish yourself like that?

Which one of the next 2 pictures looks most like windows 8 ?

Bob
Neither, really.

Ok then how about this ?
Naw more sofisticated
With connections too :-)

5:07 PM
It's 1:00 PM EDT, and the final patches for Windows XP have been released. Farewell...

Bob
@DragonLord way ahead of you (literally) :P

@Bob Patch Tuesday updates come out at 1:00PM ET or 10:00AM PT

Bob
@DragonLord Ya. Just happens that MS's website uses local time for its countdown.

Patch Tuesday occurs on the second Tuesday of each month in North America, on which Microsoft regularly releases security patches. Starting with Windows 98, Microsoft included a "Windows Update" system that would check for patches to Windows and its components, which Microsoft would release intermittently. With the release of Microsoft Update, this system also checks for updates to other Microsoft products, such as Office, Visual Studio and SQL Server. Patch Tuesday begins at 18:00 or 17:00 GMT (10:00 PST (GMT-8) or 10:00 PDT (GMT-7)). Sometimes there is an extraordinary Patch Tuesday, 14 ...

Uh, then it is safe. ;-)
Stack Exchange will be offline for a few hours tomorrow while we upgrade our web servers from Windows XP.

The most active question of recent time!
21
Q: Why half of my RAM of 8GB is missing?

Boris_yoHave been sitting with 8GBs of RAM for 2 years still thinking I needed another 4GBs and never questioning why so often I get message about low physical memory that would close all open programs (Firefox mostly since it is mainly what I use) if not paid attention to immediately. I would then have ...

MINE!

Now if you only had a RAM disk to swap to ;-)

6:22 PM
@Hennes RAM disk? SSD as cache?

Anyone ever play Untrusted?

Yes, you are right, I did leave out one piece of information regarding why I use such a small page file. It's because I have 96GB of RAM in my system. I rarely use more than 64GB of that for apps. In such a case a page file of more than a GB or so is simply wasting disk space. — Ausmith1 yesterday
0.o

@Boris_yo surprisingly enough using ram as a RAMdisk has its rare usages.
And not just when you connect a nice amige 500 with 1 MB RAM via parnet (paralel port network) to an amiga 3000, enable virtual memory and back that against RAM: on the A4000. (Insane, but I saw people do that)
Real work usage is mostly for a 32 bit OS with no PEA and > 4GB RAM

@Hennes PEA - Pulseless electrical activity

"During the system maintenance, impress on the service provider on the need to clean cooling coils and clean drain pans"

@Hennes Off-topic. Does above sentense make sense?

@Bob DediDirect says you can get the same offer as I have for the same price and they're in stock, FYI

Bob
@allquixotic Oh, thanks!
goes off to think
Actually, trying to figure out if my phone is vulnerable to heartbleed

I have no idea what cooling coils and drain pans are, but otherwise: Yes. Probably.

they have Nehalems too but probably pricier
the insane value is apparently only on the Core2 Xeons

From a chat channel on A2 mud: My $deity that thing is ugly.
Even for its era.
Don't do drugs & design

Bob
6:35 PM
@allquixotic Wait, those are Core2? :S

@Bob FSB

@Hennes Okay. What does "impress on service provider" mean?

they have dual L5520 systems too (L5520 = Nehalem) but their website says they're out of stock

@Hennes Here's another one:

"EPA impresses on avoiding contamination of the unit on the onset."

@Boris_yo If you impress something on someone, then you are making something very clear to someone
e.g., "Impress upon your brother how important it is for him to clean his room today."

6:42 PM
How much speed do you need? Except when compiling I am quite happy with an ancient Xeon X3363 (core2 gen, 4 cores, FSB).
If you need faster memory access go core i3/5/7 or AMD

Also, the only dedi servers with AMD chips in this range are from 2006. At best.

@Bob What's the offer from dedidirect that allquixotic has? The prices listed on their website don't look super spectacular...

AMD used to rock for memory access (back when Intel still used stones, rocks and FSB). Today they only rules two things:
1) Cheap atom like CPU's with sufficient GPU power.
2) Decent performance at low cost (and higher power usage)
Ofc. I am very happy that there is some competition

Protected status is an often-overlooked feature of Stack Exchange. It’s based loosely on Wikipedia’s semi-protection, and like that tool is meant to be a reaction to persistent abuse from anonymous or unproven participants: when a page attracts a lot of noise or vandalism from outside the community, Protecting it reduces the amount of clean-up needed later on.

Protected questions are not answerable by folks who haven’t earned at least 10 reputation from activity on the site where the question resides. This effectively means you need to have posted an answer somewhere else that’s attracted an up-vote or a question that’s earned two. …

Got it!

How do you solve the river level (9 or so)? I created a bunch of 'raft2' that don't move and don't get validated, but I assume there's a solution with reversing the raft's direction?

10:24 PM
@DanielBeck yeah, that's the solution, more or less. just remember that the player has to move with the raft to not fall off

@DarthAndroid Could you show me the gist? I have no idea how to get a reference to the predefined raft object to replace its behavior

Anybody understand what this 'shingling' thing is?

@MichaelFrank I'm assuming this is not in reference to roofing?

@OliverSalzburg Nope.

10:34 PM
...fucking double negatives

@DanielBeck Ahh thanks. :)

> SMR shrinks the guard space between tracks and allows tracks to overlap one another, like roofing shingles. Although data is written to the entire width of the track, a smaller/trimmed portion of the track (the width of the read head) is all that the drive cares about. By allowing tracks to overlap, areal density can continue to scale without further shrinking the size of the heads.

@MichaelFrank I wonder why they cant just make a taller hard drive with more platters? seems like it would fit in most cases where an 8T drive would be used?
