4:55 AM
@Avinash Hello there :-)

yes i'm here

Hi there - hope I am not bothering you too much with my Ubuntu troubles!

wait a sec

ok

Did you try this askubuntu.com/a/162076?

5:04 AM
Yep I did, and it didn't work, but that was before the work we did yesterday. So I will give it another shot now

why don't you try to reinstall Ubuntu?

ok, the only thing that has kept me from doing that so far is that I don't have my windows boot cd. I believe if I delete Ubuntu from the partition then I won't be able to boot back into windows again without the windows boot disk. Is that right?
If that is the case, I may just have to buy a boot cd

is that you don't have Ubuntu and windows live disk?

don't have windows live disk, I have Ubuntu live on my usb stick
maybe I can follow that advise for reinstall?

no
1.Boot ubuntu live disk
2.Click on install Ubuntu on startup
3.choose something else

5:14 AM
ok, and can then instal over my present install

4.format /dev/sda6 Ubuntu partition to ext4 filesystem
5
Then install Ubuntu on the same formatted partition
yes, format your partition where previously installed Ubuntu is present and reinstall Ubuntu on that same partition

excellent, thank you. Will give that a shot now.

please do all the steps carefully.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

5:42 AM
ok, now I have a problem!
I chose "something else", and formatted /dev/sda6 to ext4 filesystem. Then I tried to click install on the same screen but I got the message "No root file system is defined. Please correct this forum the partitioning menu"
so I hit the back button and then everything froze except for the mouse pointer, so I had to turn the computer off at the power button. And now I can't boot into grub, I get a "Grub rescue" thing
Fortunately I can use firefox by choosing release notes when booting from Live USB, when choosing release notes firefox pops open. So now at least i can get on the internet and type here.
oopsy

6:12 AM
oh you have to slelect the root file sytem as choosing / on the same screen. Why do you quit?
Plz try again that.
@Darren

I had to turn off the computer because the computer froze when I hit the back button
and I did not now how to turn off without having to hold the power button down in this situation

is that you chat with me on the same pc?

yep, because I now booted into ubuntu from Live USB, and on the screen where you choose wither "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" there is an option to read release notes. When you click that firefox opens
and that is how I chat with you now

on the side bar click on install Ubuntu icon

ok, this is what I did before choosing "something else" when I tried a little while ago
what then, do I choose "something else" again

6:19 AM
something else

ok

select /dev/sda6 and format it to ext4

ok, I did that last time, but I need to do that again?

check it was already formatted by seeing it's free space

ok

6:21 AM
if yes, on the same screen there was an option to choose your root file system
options on the dropdown list will looks like (/,/home)

there was like a drop down menu at the bottom of the window, I think that was it

did you see that?

ah yes so I choose /home

no
choose only /

i see, ok

6:23 AM
then continue the installation
does it works?

ok will do. Just writing this all down, before I actually click "Install Ubuntu" incase it quits firefox

i think no

your right, firefox is still open

let me know whether the installation completed or not

ok, so dev/sda6 is showing that 3340MB are being used, but it says it is formated as ext4
should I reformat
I am now going through the steps, because I wrote them down when you where just telling me, but now I am actually doing them

6:30 AM
how it shows 3340mb used?Is that You didn't format your sda6 partition?
is that total size of dev/sda6 is 186 GB?
@Darren

Hi, it says its 20033MB

20 Gb which one you formatted?

Ah, now I see where the "/" option is

yep dev/sda6

6:34 AM
but it was 186 GB

i guess it is just using MB here and not GB and that 20033MB is 186GB
200333MB sorry

i'm shocked

at what :-)

on seeing 20033MB
now proceed your installation

1 sec, I will do the format now, the last time I did it half an hour or so ago I didn't choose "/", I didn't choose anything! So I will do that now!

6:37 AM
ok

ah good, now I am not getting the "No root system is defined error"

i think within 1 hour i get quit out of this room

ok, thank you for your help, I am surprised you haven't run away from me yet!!!

yes i didn't run away
please update your process on this room
inform me after installation completed :-)
