@matt You should be in bed now, lol.

in what sense of the word should?

I don't know, it's late!

It is. You should be in bed!

Well, I took a nap just now, I will go sleep at 10 am. It is now 8.20 am.
The email I sent to Kit just now contains possibly the most important decision of my life.
I was hoping she could give some advice to me before I make the decision.

excellent
Kit does give good advice

12:24 AM
Now everyone who reads the transcript will be wondering what I wrote in the email, lol.
But I asked her and not you because the content has to do with your geographic locations!

good, good

12:43 AM
good night

> Tell us what makes you unique...
gah.. my fingerprint, my retina?

1:21 AM
@mitch Let us make some noise...

1 hour later…
2:32 AM
@jasper: Is "to be come a good change" correct? I think it should be "to become a good change". I got it from my friend who asked me. Thank you in advance.

IT IS I, EVAN CARROLL THE GREAT.

@CodeMocker What does that even mean?

@JasperLoy The context is the person who want to be elected made a banner. The first line presents his name, and the last line he wrote "to be come a good change".
It looks like a tagline, slogan, motto, or the like.

@CodeMocker The whole line is just bad English.
But if something turns into something, we use become which is one word.
However, whatever you use there is just wrong.
I am not sure what he wants to say.

So the correct should be "to become a good change", right?

2:36 AM
@CodeMocker Yes, but that doesn't sound right at all. I don't know what he wants to mean.

@JasperLoy: Probably he want to say, the everything changes to be better if he is a president.

@CodeMocker OK, but I think the line sounds stupid.

@JasperLoy So what do you suggest?

@CodeMocker I don't know what he wants to say exactly, so I cannot suggest anything.

@JasperLoy One more, is the word come intransitive?

2:48 AM
@EvanCarroll who?

@Amaterasu I.

@EvanCarroll i repeat, who?

@Amaterasu I also repeat: I.

okay, so you're the 9th letter of the alphabet, so?

"So" isn't a letter. It's a word. And, I'm not the ninth letter of the alphabet I AM THE EVAN "The Great" CARROLL.

2:54 AM
you replied as being "I" which is the 9th letter of the alphabet

Well, IT IS I, EVAN CARROLL THE GREAT.

so, what you're saying is that you are indeed the 9th letter of the alphabet and that letter is great?

No, however I am saying that I refer to myself as "I" when [I] am the subject of the sentence, and so should you when you are the subject (which would make for a pretty boring sentence.)

not necessarily
so your self-professed greatness comes from putting strangers down (who you know nothing of) ?
or is there something else you have contributed to society etc?
is there @EvanCarroll?

"Self-professed" greatness? And, it's conveniently juxtaposed with an admission that you know nothing of my contributions to society. All wrapped up in feigned indignation over my "putting" you down.
How cute.
Getting back to work.

3:06 AM
lol @EvanCarroll, true I do not know you, that is why I asked
literally out of curiousity

Some day I will honor you with the ability of knowing me. That day is not today. I'm mildly busy.

that is an interesting assumption, as asides from being mildly curious about these announcements of 'greatness', you continue to be a stranger to me (as I am to you).

I actually know something about you.

that's nice to know

i did a Google image search and you're apparently a fan of dogs and Frisbees. static3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121001033338/okami/images/d/d8/…

3:11 AM
lol @EvanCarroll that is a very interesting interpretation of a cultural based nickname

I can give you a new nickname, how about Fido? I think that's the English equivalent.

Hmmm you seem to have a limited knowledge (and respect) of other cultures en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu - Japanese mythology: sun goddess

No, I actually have a deep reverence for other cultures.
Unlike StackExchange.
I just didn't know you were a worshiper of the female sun Geisha.

@EvanCarroll and yet you refer to Her as 'Fido' - surely you can see that this does not reflect a 'deep reverence'of other cultures

Google Image search showed the dog with a Frisbe. I was only interpreting the picture in my the frame of my culture. It still sounds like more fun than the wikipedia page you provided. Perhaps that why Google ranked it first.
That said, I accept the correction. It's clearly in reference to the goddess that wikipedia describes.

3:22 AM
one more question if I may

No. You'll have to hold in it.
I must bid you farewell and cut up an avocado.
toodles.

I think you have already given me the answer
so, no need - thank you for the insight that your greatness seems to be of putting other people down and being insensitive to other cultures (at least that is from first impressions)
farewell

3:42 AM
apologies to this SE for cluttering up your chat

2 hours later…
5:55 AM
Um hello?
What the heck happened here?

8 hours later…
1:31 PM
@Cerberus A train wreck. A car of chicken feathers, a vat of tar, containers of bananas. Spectators came, fell in to the tar, the wind blew the feathers onto them, they slipped on the bananas. Thousands of victims. It was funny until someone lost an eye.

I wonder if partner is sliding into a gay term. Yesterday at lunch someone started to refer to his "partner" and in mid-word corrected it to "business partner."

@Mitch awesome answer!

2:01 PM
@KitFox I don't get it. Is he for the environment or against it?

2:19 PM
@Mitch within it

2:51 PM
@Robusto howdy.
Sorry, I meant: business howdy.

hey

@Cerberus something happened?
I'm not seeing it.
Also, the Evan is still not running for mod on Gaming.

What happened to the sign-in and mail links on the Google home page in Chrome?
Ach, you gotta go to Google dashboard now.
@RegDwigнt You're thinking of pardner. That's a whole 'nother thing.

3:25 PM
Hello,
Can I ask you some questions?

askaway

True, they rather order me about some
What is this "some."?
No, when I go to sea, I go as a simple sailor, right before the mast, plumb down into the fore-castle, aloft there to the royal mast-head. True, they rather order me about some, and make me jump from spar to spar, like a grasshopper in a May meadow.
rather means very much.
but why add some, which means somewhat.
contradictory

nobody ever said english was always logical, did they

@birdman1234 It means "to an unspecified extent": it is an example of understatement here.

but rather means very much.

3:32 PM
Technically, it is called antiphrasis.

I would rather not say

I could understand this if it were
they order me about some

Taken together it's understatement.

so it was a deliberate one?
rather and some.

Compare: "You do carry on a bit." The do emphasizes the carrying on, while the "a bit" softens it.

3:33 PM
don't get stuck on a single word... look for the context

It's nuanced.

so melville was at first saying
they order me about so much
he softened it by adding some?
but

Yes, @skull has it about right: stop reading word-for-word and start listening for the music. Feel the sense of it. If you play music note by note, you never produce a musical phrase.

is my interpretation ok robusto.
"They don't give me a single penny I ever heard of."
what is this "I ever heard of?"

"rather" does not always mean very much

3:38 PM
The full sentence reads: "And more importantly, I always go to sea as a sailor, because they make a point of paying me for my trouble, whereas they never pay passengers a single penny that I ever heard of."
It means he never heard of passengers being paid for their travel aboard ship.

Rephrased: "I never heard of them paying passengers a single penny for their travel."

this "that" is like, "not that I heard of!"
?

Yes.

oh i see.
so
And there is all the difference in the world between paying and being paid.

3:41 PM
Yes.

"in the world" this is just an emphasis?
?

Read Prof. Lawler on the various uses of that:
3
A: Are there rules about using "that" to join two clauses?

John LawlerThere are several different kinds of that in English (besides the ordinary demonstrative this, that, these, those). All of them are used in linking clauses, but they link different kinds of clauses, and follow different syntactic rules. These that's are not, however, conjunctions; they are Comp...

in the world...is an idiom?
to emphasize it?

"all the difference in the world" is a set phrase.

thank you very much.

3:42 PM
All the [noun] in the world is the template.
"I wouldn't do that for all the money in the world."
Actually, it's probably broader than that: "All the [noun] in [location]."
... for all the tea in China
... for all the whiskey in Ireland

oh i see!
thank you
"The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven."
the second "that" modifies considering?
believe? both are possible?

The second that modifies "we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills" in toto.

to say it is connected to "considering" is grammatically impossible?

[considering the fact that] we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills

no. "that on no account..."
I am talking about this "that."
sorry

3:47 PM
It is an extension of the first.

Ich habe too much Bier getrunken last night, aber much fun was had by me.

considering that [A is true], and that [B is true as well].

so it is not an extention of "believe?"

@KitFox Du hast immer zu viel getrunken.

Not always.

3:49 PM
@birdman1234 Read what I just said in the line above yours.

I see.
Sorry

considering governs both instances of that

Die Frauen kept refilling mein Glass wenn ich sehe nicht.

Thank you

@KitFox Du siehst die Nacht? Ach, du hast schon gut gemacht.

3:51 PM
Ich aß zu viel Instant-Nudeln.

The problem with typing German on the iPad is the über correction.

(I'm sure I'm on-topic.)
The Incomprehensible Room. All languages spoken. At once.
:D

At least now I'm hungry instead of queasy.
@Robusto Es tut mir leid.

Die Frauen schenkten mir immer nach, wenn ich gerade nicht schaute.

Wie geht's?

3:54 PM
Sieben. Vielleicht sogar acht!

Hahaha.

It's been one cold night.

How was bouncing? Still have all your bits?

Yeah.
Even pieces.

Remember du dein Hut?

3:55 PM
I never wear a Hut.
But some people lost their jackets.

The own of Jove. Is this grammatical?

Was wearst du?

JOve's own brother

Or coats.

why not that?

3:56 PM
Some assholes tried to steal.
And two folks drank themselves into a coma.
But that's about it.

I was one of them

Mostly nothing was happening at all.

@RegDwigнt Man muss die Frauen / immer schauen

And, or rather but, the time flew by like an arrow.

Fruit flies love a banana.
Or a pineapple.

3:57 PM
Fruit flies are lies. It's in the name.

@skullpatrol Get well soon.

I had a really good time last night.

@RegDwigнt More homophobia from Russia.

@Robusto of course. You expected less?

@KitFox Yeah, isn't getting not-so-drunk-that-you-puke fun?

3:59 PM
You should, like, adjust your expectations, dude.

I'm pretty sure I spoke fluent German and Russian for at least thirty minutes.
And I was very popular.

@DamkerngT. Thanks, did you read my message to you in the ELL room?

Oh, that. Thank you very much.

@KitFox that's how I feel every time I have a bottle of vodka all for myself.

"But though the picture lies thus tranced, and though this pine-tree shakes down its sighs like leaves upon this shepherd's head, yet all were vain, unless the shepherd's eye were fixed upon the magic stream before him. " "all were vain"..isn't this ungrammatical because the "if" clause is subjunctive?
"all would be vain" is proper?

4:00 PM
I'm remembering how to listen in German, by the way. It consists in not trying to translate every sentence into English, but to just listen for the sense of it in German. I used to know that when I was in Germany, but I kind of forgot it over the years.

All would be the Vain Carroll.
@Robusto welcome to the world of How Languages Wurk.

@DamkerngT. snail was arguing with me for some time about it ;-)

@RegDwigнt i no rite
It's a simple principle, but damned if I don't keep forgetting it.

@skullpatrol Yeah, it's fun to read, too. :-)

@DamkerngT. Yep

4:01 PM
Anyone can learn complex things. Simple things are easily forgotten.

@KitFox pick the german keyboard and it'll use the german spellchecker

Like, making concrete.

Silicon and oxygen.

You make some concrete, and you think hey that was pretty simple, and then you forget all about it for a thousand years.
Happens so often.

Making concrete is easy. Making concrete abstract is hard.
Also, making concrete hard is easy. You just leave it alone for a day or two.

4:03 PM
@Robusto How could I do that. I'm a robot, it's beyond my mechanics.

Is abstract like a tractor with ABS?

I met probably a dozen new people and read fortunes.

@DamkerngT. You present me with an existential dilemma, sir. How can I know what you think?

@KitFox you should have read a fortune for yourself, then retire.

@KitFox You should have tried to meet a dozen new fortunes and read people.
Semi-jinx.
But mine was better.

4:04 PM
@Robusto Argh. You are feeding me with a recursive thinking. I'm afraid my stack will overflow soon. :-)

Reading fortunes is all about reading people.

@DamkerngT. Recurses, foiled again!

Very advice. Much good.

@DamkerngT. use tail recursion

@Robusto of course you would say that.

4:05 PM
@RegDwigнt I think I speak for all of us when I do.

One could say it went without saying.
But then you went ahead and said it.

@Mitch Rewriting recursive mechanism... beep... completed.

I liked practicing the skill. It made me feel good.

not saying

@RegDwigнt No. It went without staying. As always.

4:05 PM
hello?

Such Buddhism, very meta.

please help me...

hello?

No more moon in the water . . .

someone throw in a line...

4:06 PM
@birdman1234 of course it is proper, it's in friggin Moby Dick.

fishing for . . . ?

Beer.

Is it me you're looking for?

Like Moby Dick knew what was right

Moby Dick knew that the rent was too damn high.

4:07 PM
What do whales know about poetry or love or living life to its fullest?

I'd say that qualifies him as knowledgeable.

There's something in your eyes.

Yo don't know something like that. It just is.

Oh. Time to go. Bye!

Mr Nicole Richie's father, would you please stop.

4:07 PM
@RegDwigнt Do you have a tab open to the picture I posted a few years ago involving German wenches in dirndls serving beer?

@Robusto I am over 7 percent certain imgur has long deleted it.

@Mitch No. They only know how to shatter your pitiful human aspirations.

@Robusto ears perk up

but why
grammatically

you compare me to some swimming blubber-sack blowhard? please don't answer that

@RegDwigнt I knew you could do it.

That is so not serving.
Except the fans, perhaps.

That's what I meant.

That's a waste of beer.

It's really quite telling that all images left and right of that one have long been deleted, but this one hasn't.
Imgur deletes images people don't view.

4:11 PM
Cleavage sticks around.

Cleavarly.

Just don't mention Cleavaland Browns with Kevin Costner.

If there is a better illustration of 夢 I have yet to see it.

4:13 PM
So you spent 2+ years not making any progress, is what you're saying?

Hell no. I have spent way longer than that not making progress.
4

You are mein Vorbild.

Besonders nicht.

Speaking of progress, I didn't realize that the day is almost over and I still haven't shopped (for) groceries.
The showermobile and the dressmobile await.

Interesting. I'm on the first page of users currently online sorted by rep. I feel so special I can hardly C&P the link.

4:20 PM
That makes me wonder which page I'm in.
Oh, the 11th page.

4:34 PM
Interesting. Most of that page is filled with mods. There are only four or five non-diamonds represented.

4:46 PM
i'm an unrepresented non-diamond
or is that a non-represented undiamond?

5:34 PM
@RegDwigнt The girl on the right is hot.
@skullpatrol I prefer the first version.

6:01 PM
@matt What are you doing now?

6:21 PM
Hi @JSBձոգչ have not seen you for 9000 years!

6:33 PM
Wow, this chat is dead, lol.
Wow, I think I said the most lols in this room.

eh guys, how do you call it in Chess when you sacrifice a piece to later get an advantage of it..?
well Sacrifice

7:03 PM
Hellow, mod.
@RegDwigнt: This answer doesn't answer my question and it's pretty obvious that the answerer tried to make it up to get attention or something. I wonder why it is still alive.
I mean kill it with fire!
Thanks and have a nice day,
Dr.Gigi

@JasperLoy Oh hai! I was playing guild wars 2.

8:09 PM
@Robusto Indeed, your dream is the most beautiful.
@MattЭллен I was drinking coffee, lol.

I see. becoming a caffeine junky, eh?

Yeah. CNY is coming.
Not that I celebrate.

Chinese New York. I see.
That is a cause for celebration

Yes, Maria 1 is in NY, lol.

For when the new Duke of York is blessed by the Chinese government

8:12 PM
Oh well, I should forget about all the Marias.

This is the York of the horse

In fact, I think Maria 2 is in NY as well, lol.
Do you know what lhf means?

yes. obsessing over them seems unduly optimistic.
@JasperLoy no
is it an airport?

LHF = low hanging fruit

8:14 PM
It is the term used in the math chat for easy questions, I only pick lhf, lol.

I see
I plucked an LHF on gaming today

@MattЭллен I no longer like Maria 2, as you know, however I will like Maria 1 till my last breath, but I won't, and can't do anything about it...
@MattЭллен I see, I still think that games are boring.

I see
well, to be honest, I haven't actually played any of the games I've answered about

Haha, then how do you answer?

Google
it's amazing what's out there if you just look

8:18 PM
Ah yes, sometimes I answer lhf with a google, lol.

I'm heading back to Guild Wars! much wow.

8:45 PM

8:58 PM
Hello people!
How are you today?
@RegDwigнt I meant the...discussion between The Evan Carroll and that purple user.
@Robusto I would say it is suspect, but still also used by unmarried straight people.
Although I must say I never ever hear it from younger people, at least not here.
Of course there may be regional differences, but it the situation is mostly similar in Dutch.

9:46 PM
@Cerberus Hi ! Have you finally told Mario?

10:01 PM
Bye.

10:26 PM
@Gigili sadly, that is one of the few answers that is actually close to the mark, except for the fact that no one says it the way suggested. People do express that notion with euphemisms for 'masturbation'.

10:42 PM
@Mitch Boo!

11:36 PM
@JasperLoy You look different.

@DamkerngT. Is damkerng your real name?

@JasperLoy Yes.
Good to see that you're not blue anymore. :-)

Well, I am still blue.

But is that your real photo?

Yes, many years ago, lol.

11:47 PM
@JasperLoy Oh, sorry to hear that.
