but apparently there are quite a few people on Seasoned Advice who like to flirt with food poisoning (or know it's a risk but will casually take it)

@BobMcGee Partly my fault for promising to help rein in these questions and never getting around to it. The latest revision of your answer would probably be ideal as a canonical food safety answer, or at least as the starting point for one.

Yeah, sad part is, the member who posted it is (or at least used to be) one of the more anti-subjective types.
