anyone here?

2 hours later…
4:15 AM
@PauloCereda They went the M$ way: adapt the web site to the mobile design to make the millions coming from their phones to the web site feel at home.

Yuck.

3 hours later…
6:58 AM
Reading the meta threads, it looks to me like the driver behind the design change is 'corporate identity'. Goes along with the 'cross network ads' that now appear for popular questions on lots of network sites at the same time, at least in some sense.
You can also see that in the 'stats' drop down: it shows votes for all network sites, which is really not a useful thing (depending on how many sites you are registered on, of course).

7:40 AM
I don't want to nag, but can one at least change the color of the status bar?
3

8:03 AM
@Johannes_B CSS hacks will do it: as a 'feature' the decision has been made to go with black cross-network
One of the biggest issues for me is that the new interface approach hides meta/chat, which sort-of defeats the idea of getting new people involved beyond asking questions

@TorbjørnT. Help please!
Do you know why this path name is not being recognised?
\draw [name path=upper] (0,0) -- (A1);

@StephanLehmke :)

@kan Well, no, I'm afraid not. Is A1 a node or a coordinate?

kan
@TorbjørnT. it's a coordinate...
defined by \node [coordinate]...

@kan Then I have no idea. MWE?

kan
Hmm, I could give you one:
\documentclass{amsart}
\title{Madhava's series for $\frac{\pi}{4}$}
\usepackage{xfrac}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{positioning, calc,decorations.pathreplacing,intersections, through}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
\begin{center}
\begin{tikzpicture}[scale=3]
% The coordinates (0,0), (1,0)
\coordinate[label=below left:$0$] (O) at (0,0);
\coordinate[label=below left:$1$] (A) at (1,0);

%The Axes and the circle
\path [draw, dotted, thick, name path=C] (0,0) circle (1cm);
\draw[thick, domain=0:45] plot ({cos(\x)}, {sin(\x)});
@TorbjørnT. Now, the stuff is sufficiently complicated that, I am not sure what else in the code is really unnecessary.

10:27 AM
@kan If I were to guess: because the upper path is inside a scope it is perhaps 'hidden' from the rest of the picture, use name path global (or whatever that key was called) instead.

kan
@TorbjørnT. Ooh!!!
@TorbjørnT. You were right!
Thanks for the help!

@Joseph: Hello! :)

Ok, so I decided that I'll try to slowly push in some (IMHO) resonable changes in the new top bar, hopefully ending in having something very similar to the old one:
0
Q: Conditionally show and hide the review button

toheczI would like to request two changes related to the review button in the top-bar: It should show only when there're reviews pending, and might show the number of reviews, like it did in the old design. (Remember that while there're lots and lots of reviews pending on SO, on most of the other sit...

Slightly more tolerable:

@AlanMunn since you're there, you might want to use this, too:
.new-topbar .container #header #hlogo {
    margin-top: 13px;
    margin-bottom: 7px;
}

.new-topbar .container #header #hlogo a {
    margin-top: 20px;
    margin-bottom: 10px;
}

@tohecz Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't see any effect of this. What should it do?

@AlanMunn correct the logo position. Maybe you need !important with each line :-/

@tohecz Yes, that works. But I'm not sure I like the change. It seems a bit too wide now.

3:14 PM
@AlanMunn I think it's very close to the original setting, but I don't know. Anyways, it seems that we'll have a 10-minute outrage, so see ya later!

@tohecz, @AlanMunn: Sean posted a link to a meta.SO thread about the topbar. I just removed the reference to hiding the avatars and the result is pretty good to me:

@PauloCereda Yeah, I tried that, but it takes away a couple of the icons too. I don't mind the logo as it is, and I've matched the colour of the bar to the background of the page.

@AlanMunn Ah I got that icon thingy too. :) In any case, here's the trick of making the icons appearing again: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/4006/3094 :)

@PauloCereda Yes I saw that. I'm using #FEFEF6 for the colour.

@AlanMunn Ah cool. :)

4:04 PM
@David: quack
:)

4:51 PM
Positive of new top bar: I've installed an additional extension for Firefox :-)

@JosephWright Stylish? :)

@PauloCereda Yup

@JosephWright Yay! :) Me too. :)

@PauloCereda Any idea of the appropriate fix for the logo misplacement (@tohecz might know?)

@JosephWright I'll try something right now. :)

4:58 PM
rep capped on meta :)

@tohecz Wow!

@JosephWright I put an idea into the bug report

@tohecz Ah, I'll take a look

Q: Bug in the logo appearance with the new black top bar

toheczWith the new fancy black top bar, the logo of the site got mutilated. I believe that the following CSS fix would bring it close to the original state, however, I'm not 100% sure and IMHO the old version should be checked. .new-topbar .container #header #hlogo { margin-top: 13px; margin...

@Joseph: blog post from us? :)

5:01 PM
@PauloCereda I'd rather let the Powers settle things a bit: it's clearly not popular cross-network and I think at least some change is likely

@JosephWright Indeed. Any rumour in the mod lounge?

@PauloCereda Not at present

@JosephWright soon, maybe. :)

@PauloCereda btw, I liked the comment someone made: StackExchange unified its look ... to WordPress

@tohecz LOL
What will be next logical step? Replace the font to Comic Sans? :)

5:05 PM
@PauloCereda likely. However, since there's no text at all or its too small and non-contrast, no-one will notice :)

@tohecz My problem with being 'unified' is that I don't use the network that way. I use TeX-sx (obviously), I very occasionally visit the main site and beyond that it's one-offs. Giving me a list of sites I've used by rep doesn't make a difference, neither does lumping all of my rep together, it just annoys me.

I think there'll be a lot to fix yet. However, these two comments give insight into the future I'm afraid:
@tohecz Many people complained about the old bar changing all the time. And trust me when I say "no-one complained", no matter what you're talking about here, will ever be accurate. The count or an indicator may in fact make a some re-appearance, but we're letting things settle before making any changes. — Nick Craver 3 hours ago
Which means that we'll have this whole stupid and uncomfortable thing for a long time before any official change. Fancy people (probably hundreds-to-thousands of them) will make their jQ or whatever modifications, only to be angry again when the top bar changes, once it's "settled down". Do you see how misfortunate this is? — tohecz 3 hours ago
@JosephWright Positives for me: Mortarboard on meta.tex-sx, and arouund 100 rep at MSO ;)

5:26 PM
Does someone want to answer this? http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/148552/37907

To tell the truth, I don't think this is a good idea. So i can't give an answer (even if i knew how to achieve this).

@Johannes_B Hi! I commented in the same manner

@tohecz Thanks.

@Johannes_B no problem

A: Understanding the significance of the elimination of one-click transfer between main and meta

Shog9I have something like 3 years of muscle memory telling me to click in a certain place. A place which now takes me to /review. That's not at all a good reason not to change things, but it does make getting used to the change take longer. I don't doubt that many others are in the same boat - the fr...

^^ interesting thoughts of "popularizing meta"

6:35 PM
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle I have revised and extended my "hash" question with more testing data.

@JosephWright exactly! I'm nearly exclusively active on TeX.sx and actually don't care at all about the rest of the network. I'm not interested in hot questions on some other site and even care less if the sites look alike .. I also miss the recent badges list on the right of the main page: often enough I found interesting question and answers by clicking on some recent »Nice Answer« badge...

@cgnieder well, they would like to change it, and in my opinion, this is a reasonable direction. I, for one, started to be active on CS, TCS and Math only because of featured questions and question ads. I'm not active much, but still, this small contributions are very important.
From my point of view, the all-over changes of the layout with featured questions moved to the main panel and the site list getting more accessible are good changes. I hate the new design of the top panel (esp. the colour imbalance) and +1 click to get to chat and meta.

7:01 PM
@tohecz I agree that advertising the whole network makes sense from their point of view, obviously. I'm just saying that I'm not interested at all and to me the ads only are annoying... just like any other ads (which is why I have an adblocker in the first place)... well, I'll have to live with it, I guess

@cgnieder I get your point of view ;)

What if we create some community ad making fun of the topbar and other changes? It's a way of legitimate backfire for SO. :)

@PauloCereda Instead of backfiring, I'm so far trying to convince people that the changes are wrong ;)

@tohecz That too. :)

@PauloCereda I'm at +114 rep at MSO today, I'm afraid I won't make it to 200 :-/

7:13 PM
@tohecz Oh. :(
ooh an owl! :)

@Jake Hello, Mr Owl :)

Would it be correct to say that Acrobat is the default PDF reader for Windows, Evince is the default for Linux, and Preview is the default for Mac?
@tohecz Hello Paulooot!

@Jake I don't think so. I've never opened Evince, and I've had Linux for 5 years now ;)

@tohecz Which one do you use?

@Jake depends on the Linux distro you have I think... my default PDF viewer is Okular (on openSUSE)

7:16 PM
@Jake Acrobat, oh yeah, and TeXworks internal one, but that's something a bit different

@Jake <3

@cgnieder Okay, cool. I guess KDE based distros use something else again?

@Jake maybe... I actually don't know

You wonder why you get twice larger result then you should, looking for an incorrect multiplication by $2$. Suddenly, I realize that $6-2\neq8$...

@tohecz: just for teh lulz, install apvlv then try to open a PDF with it. :)

7:18 PM
@tohecz Thanks. I'm trying to figure out with what viewers one would have to test a solution to be reasonably sure to cover most users

@PauloCereda apwhat?

@tohecz apvlv :)
Oct 14 at 22:11, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda I was happier 2 minutes ago when I didn't know about it

@Jake ask on UserExperience.SE if there're any statistics on this ;)

@tohecz Hehe, yeah, I'm sure they'd love that question there.

@Jake My usual combo was Sumatra in Windows, Evince in Linux and Skim in Mac. :)

7:20 PM
@PauloCereda Skim, that's what people use here! (Excuse me, I'm in France)

@tohecz very good PDF viewer. :)

@PauloCereda yeah, my sup uses it :)

@PauloCereda No offense, but you're not exactly a very representative user (read: you're a nerd) =) (Although that seems like a pretty vanilla selection...)

@Jake nerds use DVI output to a 2-line lamp terminal ;)

@Jake That's the nicest thing someone has ever said to me. <3

7:21 PM
@PauloCereda Hehe!

@Jake: google apvlv you too, so you see a new level of nerdness. :)

@PauloCereda Well, owls are nice, aren't they?

@tohecz And wise!

@tohecz 'course they are! :)

@tohecz How was your French lesson? Did you learn any new bad word?

7:23 PM

My train is 45 minutes late, I have to pass the time somehow.

Pure wisdom. ^^ :)

@PauloCereda That owl seems truly shocked at someone's lack of wisdom.

@egreg no bad words, just some bad sigles (abbreviations) :)
@PauloCereda OMG a confused owl!!!

@Jake must... resist... posting... orly... comments... :)

7:25 PM
@PauloCereda Haha, yeah, that's what it looks like!

@tohecz topbar strikes again. :)

@PauloCereda where?

@tohecz The confused owl. :)
It's confused about the topbar. :)

@PauloCereda oh yeah, looks so :) :D :P and looks like me couple hours ago

One day, a cute girl said to me while passing by me: "you are so wacky yet adorable!" I was like, "er.... thanks?" :)

7:28 PM
@PauloCereda when is the wedding? :D

@PauloCereda I'd definitely take that as a compliment =)

@tohecz She ran away to a safe place, I guess. :P
@Jake I take my chances. :P
Of course, my Introduction to the theory of computation book didn't help me. :P

8:05 PM
@Jake For Mac, I also use Skim, but I would agree that it's a niche market. I think Preview is pretty typical as a default for most Mac users, although if you use Acrobat a lot, Adobe Reader might also be popular.

8:15 PM
@PauloCereda That's surely part of the 'wacky' designation.

@AlanMunn :)

169 daily MSO rep, I'll make it (I hope) :)
btw, don't you know why I occupy myself with such a crap while I take an exam tomorrow?

8:38 PM
@PauloCereda Do I need a separate style for the meta site and the main site if I want different colours for the bar? That works, but I wonder if it's possible to combine the two into one?
@tohecz I finally realized what your spacing correction on the logo was doing...

@AlanMunn LOL! :)
179 daily rep. If I stop at 199, I'll be angry! :D

@tohecz But I'm not convinced that the correction is the right way to do it. It seems that the line should be moved up, rather than more space left around the logo.
@tohecz And now I've just read your meta question about it....

@AlanMunn I'm not sure. The correction is my rough try. It's really necessary to look into the orinigal styl screenshots and see what it should be.
Anyways, gotta go home. I write a test tomorrow, so I need to get some sleep, i'll be a long day!

8:55 PM
Good afternoon everyone, just wondering where i can find the addons for TeX.SX like for MWE and links to package documentation. I had read the post with it but I cant seem to find it.

Q: Useful StackApps and other User Scripts for TeX.SX

Martin ScharrerSome people might not know it, but on http://stackapps.com/ there are several applications / user scripts available which makes certain tasks easier for moderators and other users which often post helpful comments. I like to point out some of them here. Feel free to post other ones as answer pos...

@AlanMunn Merci beaucoup

@azetina De rien. The one I use the most is the comment link creator, which turns links into their actual question title in comments.

@AlanMunn Thanks for the tip....

9:54 PM
@tohecz Thanks for the update in your meta question: logo is now in the right place :-)
Much talk in the mod room on the status bar: removing ready access to meta is clearly not popular with basically anyone who's thought about it

10:10 PM
This question could be rephrased as "I'd like to drive a formula1 car, but I'd like it could be done by just moving the wheel"

Q: StackExchange-like LaTeX editor - with live preview/rendering and control/formatting syntax not required

user111854For some time I've looking for a simple editor, for writing mathematics, like the one I'm using right now on StackExchange. My needs are as follows: live preview/rendering of what you are typing (you shouldn't press a 'compile' button for seeing the result of your markup) no control syntax ne...

@AlanMunn I think so, unless there's a way to create two rules in the same style. :(

@PauloCereda So how do I stop the one for tex.stackexchange.com from overruling the one for meta.tex.stackexchange.com?

@AlanMunn RIP Mandela. :(
@AlanMunn Try using url-prefix("http://tex.") in the beginning of the rule.

@PauloCereda Thanks, that did the trick.

10:17 PM
@PauloCereda O que tu achas da photo?

@AlanMunn Totalmente relevante ao artigo? :P

@PauloCereda :)

@AlanMunn By the way, some folklore from the elders in my region: people with freckles are said to have broken a lot of tico-tico eggs when kids. :)

@PauloCereda I see. Freckles are pretty rare in Brazil I would think.

@AlanMunn Not that rare, I'd say. :)

10:21 PM
@PauloCereda Really? I associate them mainly with Celtic people, especially those with red hair.

@AlanMunn I think so. :) Although it's been a while since I saw a person with (natural) red hair or freckles. :)
@Alan: you shouldn't have linked a video of Chico César. :) We played some of his songs last week. :)

@MartinScharrer Joel Spolsky apologised to me on Twitter. Now I feel somewhat guilty for inventing the hashtag #UXFart
@PauloCereda PQP? Or, if you can stretch to Spanish, PQLM?

@Brent.Longborough LOL
@Brent: Vai para a ponte que partiu... :)

@JosephWright But only for you, the is still sort-of ...
Btw: Very interesting society here: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/help/badges/41/mortarboard Cuppa tea anyone there? :)

1 hour later…
11:41 PM
good night and cross your fingers for my exam, please!

@tohecz Night, Tom! Everything is gonna be alright, don't worry! :)

@PauloCereda I do. I'm afraid I pissed the teacher of by leaving in one third of the last lecture. There was a PhD defense I didn't want to miss...

@tohecz Don't think about it, pal. :) Just go there and do your best. :) I'm sure you'll succeed, as everything you do. :)

@PauloCereda everything? well, that's too much a compliment to be true :)

@tohecz Hey, I can't even spell any Czech word, what are you complaining? :P

11:45 PM
@PauloCereda I lost you just now :p

@tohecz <3

@PauloCereda well, good night

@tohecz Good night, buddy! :)
