How can I put QED to the same position always?

Not like this: $$O(n). \; \; \; \; \; \;\;\;\;\;\;\;\; \qed$$

2:21 AM
@hhh ouch:-) amsthm proof environment adds qed automatically (and as I think discussed earlier $$ isn't latex)

2:34 AM
A quick Q: Does anyone know why the diacritics on the c's don't appear in the bibliography while the rest do (in fact, the c doesn't even appear at all, even without the diacritic!):
% arara: xelatex
% arara: biber
% arara: xelatex
% arara: xelatex
% arara: clean: {files: [test.bbl, test.bcf, test.aux]}

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fourier,filecontents}
\begin{filecontents}{\jobname.bib}
	@article{Doe2013,
		title   = {{Lorem Ipsum}},
		volume  = {1},
		journal = {Foology},
		author  = {J. Q. P\'{u}blic and J. D\"{o}e and J. Han\v{c}o\^{c}k},
		year    = {2013},
		pages   = {1--10},
	}
\end{filecontents}

\usepackage[%
	backend=biber,
	maxnames=50,
	doi=false,
	style=ieee
If you remove the fourier package, then none of the characters with diacritics appear...

@PauloCereda recognise this language? tex.stackexchange.com/a/148269/1090

@DavidCarlisle Example?
\begin{proof}

\end{proof}?
Thank you.

@hhh good night:-)

Ahm
Hello everyone, how can I force a chapter with no number to be listed in TOC. I am using classicthesis package. I tried \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{Acronyms} after \chapter*{Acronyms} but it has no effect.

3:35 AM
@DavidCarlisle OMG

2 hours later…
5:34 AM
@PauloCereda ... which raises the question whether we actually need more Brazilian law texts.

6:00 AM
There was a package that provided some kind of pseudo-verbatim environment that would set ttfamily and escape some otherwise troublesome characters but isn't a real verbatim environment. I forgot the name though and I can't find it. Can someone help me out?
verbatim causes nothing but trouble so I'm hoping this fake thingy will be enough

@Christian alltt

@StephanLehmke Thanks, will try that :)
damn, still getting a missing $
will have to try the box trick described here

Q: verbatim inside subfloat?

Nahuel GarbezzaWhen I write the following \subfloat[caption]{\label{fig:xxxx}\verb+xxxx+} I get \verb illegal in command argument. Seems that isn't possible to define a verbatim environment inside a \subfloat. When I use \subfloat[caption]{\label{fig:xxxx}\texttt{xxxx}} it works, but I need multiple lines, ...

phew, that works

3 hours later…
9:40 AM
@StephanLehmke Oh no! :)

9:51 AM
@StephanLehmke I hope that was a Brazilian law text not some massive spam posting, I didn't actually read it:-)

@DavidCarlisle It's a boring contract about software development. :)

10:16 AM
@PauloCereda but beautifully typeset

@DavidCarlisle Of course!

2 hours later…
12:34 PM
@egreg isn't regex overkill for getting the letter after the second space? :-)

12:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle oh.

1:07 PM
Dear mathematicians, I'm not sure this is your cup of tea, but could one recommend a book on interval temporal logic?

3 hours later…
kan
3:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle: vvvvv
I'm a more or less happy Vim user. It has no frills or fancy stuff; it just does what I need it to do. I have tried Emacs a few times. It does a lot of amazing things, except what I need it to do. Also, the learning curve is like a crazy spiral and it takes a long time before a new Emacs user can actually set up their environment to their liking. I would try Emacs, get frustrated, then run back to Vim. This has happened a few times and may happen again soon ... ish.

My question: Why do I keep wanting to Emacs even though it frustrates me to no end?
2
Seen on Google +.

4:25 PM
@PauloCereda wow I was in a temporal logic research group a lifetime ago (but I think I accidentally got involved in writing latex2e at the time, so I don't recall much about it now:-)

@DavidCarlisle Really?! Oh my! Could you recommend me a textbook? :)

@PauloCereda I found this (don't recall it at all, I suspect it was Howard's student who did the work, and I was passing by in the coffee room:-) google.co.uk/…

@DavidCarlisle Thank you! :)

@PauloCereda I think this is what we used to recommend (certainly it was some tome by Dov Gabbay) ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780198537694.do but things have probably moved on

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! :) The books are quite expensive, aren't they? :)

4:39 PM
@PauloCereda yes well I never paid (or read it:-) but Dov Gabbay's group and Howard Barringer's group that I was in worked closely together so there were copies lying around

@DavidCarlisle Maybe it is, but it's handy, isn't it?

@DavidCarlisle :) I'll take a look if our libraries might have any copies around. :)
It will be either a PS4 or a temporal logic book. :(

@PauloCereda If you study temporal logic and doctor who, you can nip back to 1993 and ask for a pre-print

@DavidCarlisle LOL sounds like a plan. :)
@David: I could also go to the future and see if my future self is able to learn that thing. :P

5:15 PM
I need to find some cheaper logic. I'll have to sell a kidney. :P

Hi. can you help me for writing I want 3000words context but I don't know where I find It
Help help help help

@kan This greatly exaggerates the difficulty of using emacs, which for a beginner is no more difficult to use than pico/nano, for example.

@IceGirl 'ello! Er... what are you trying to do? I'm confused. :)

I need a 3000 words context the subject is not very important can you help me?

@IceGirl You mean as a kind of dummy text? You can use the kantlipsum package. I don't know about counting the words though.

5:27 PM
@IceGirl lipsum.com

My teacher needs this context
Paulo?????????????????

@IceGirl Who needs it isn't so important. I think what we're asking is what do you mean by a 'context'?

Garota de gelo????????????

what do you mean Paulo?
I mean essay or something like this

@PauloCereda Olha que coisa mais gelada...
@IceGirl Ok, but what's the purpose of this essay? Does the text actually matter or is it to demonstrate formatting? Are you using LaTeX?

5:38 PM
For example my text can be about love but i didn't find anything about it in internet I find but it didn't 3000 words it was less than 3000 words

@IceGirl Nah don't worry, it's just your nick in Portuguese. :)

@IceGirl Are you sure you're asking in the right place?

@AlanMunn This is a room full of love (specially David and vim). :)
I ain't helping, am I? :P

I should conference about my essay towards my friends and teacher

@IceGirl So you have to find a text, and then read and discuss it?

5:42 PM
Exactly exactly yes yes yes

What if you get a lot of love songs, glue them together until word count > 3000? :)

No not songs

Uh oh.

@PauloCereda How was your journey to São Paulo?

@egreg It was very good, actually. :) A lot more traffic than I expected, but all ended well. :) And of course I missed you guys. :)
Christmas time seems to get everybody in a hurry.

5:46 PM
@IceGirl Ok. Well I'm not sure you're really in the right chat room for this, although we're generally a very helpful bunch here. The problem is that most texts don't come with word counts associated with them. Perhaps short magazine articles might be about the right length?

If it contains 3000 words is ok
Could you help me Where I asking my question?
I have butterfly in my stomach

I know Carl Jung has some manuscripts called Über die Liebe and it talks about love, but I can't find an online version of it, and even in English.

@IceGirl I don't really think there's anywhere that makes sense to ask this question. There is a huge amount of text in the web that could work, but none of it will have word counts attached to it. For example, though, here's a main article in the NYTimes magazine article that's about 6000 words. (Counted using MSWord). I don't know of a way to find such a text without just hunting around and counting.

@FaheemMitha and ignores the fact that its impossible to even type hello world into vim without serious study beforehand.

@DavidCarlisle Quite.

5:53 PM
A good bloke has a keynote about love called 25 years (almost) of things wrong with longtable. :)

@PauloCereda Your jokes are getting more obscure by the minute. :)

@AlanMunn LOL I'm doomed. :) I have to choose between PS4 and a book. :)

Ok

Ahm
Hello everyone. The library of my school ask to revise my thesis and put all the page numbers in bottom center. I have written my thesis using classicthesis. Could someone help me how I can do it? Unfortunately, commenting out \pagestyle{scrheadings}and using \pagestyle{plain} instead of that does not have any effect.
I have explained my question in more detail in tex.stackexchange.com/q/148387/23594

6:56 PM
@PauloCereda Added LaTeX3 version as requested.

@egreg Thank you! :)
@egreg: you know, I can't wait for The Good Book On LaTeX3 Programming, by Enrico Gregorio. :)

@PauloCereda Not the best, probably.

@egreg C'mon, it's great! As always.

Ahm
7:12 PM
Could someone please help me with the question I posted here tex.stackexchange.com/q/148387/23594

7:44 PM
@Ahm we probably can, once you read and follow this post about MWEs

Hi

@IceGirl Hi, welcome back! :)

How are you doing?
Hello?????????????????????????
Can you make sentences about these words? compact(n) estrange(v) irreconcilable(adj) litigation(n)
And also, enigmatic(adj) stealthy(adj) accede(v)

8:07 PM
@IceGirl I don't mean to sound rude, but honestly, you can do that yourself. This isn't really the place to ask about English homework(?).

I'm so sorry Ok
Do you mean about this sentence? It was not my fate to become a woman, so it was easier for me to see the graces.

8:24 PM
I mean: Do you know about the meaning of this sentence? (above sentence)

@rm-rf: Now that I noticed you are a Mathematica moderator! :) It seems I can get a Mathematica academic license, should I go for it? I don't play a lot with it, but it seems a better option than Matlab. :) Well, I'd go with Octave, but hey, they can give me a license for free. :)

@PauloCereda You should, but depending on what exactly you do (your field), MATLAB might be a better option...

@rm-rf Theoretical CS. :) Occasionally, we deal with some data, but I'm more inclined to go with Mathematica instead of Matlab. :)

Also, Octave doesn't quite compare to MATLAB. Sure, it has the same syntax and it's nice that it's free, but it is only comparable to vanilla MATLAB. MATLAB's strength is in its toolboxes (there are a lot of them). You can criticize their business model, but it is what it is. On the other hand, Mathematica is more expensive (not an issue for you), but it comes with the entire kitchen sink.
@PauloCereda Oh, then Mathematica will definitely be the better option.

8:32 PM
@IceGirl you do realise this is the TeX typesetting chat, do you use TeX at all? (It isn't clear from any of your questions)

@rm-rf Ah I really don't know the difference, I only used, let's say, the intersection between them (only the basic functions), so the code was quite portable. :) I refuse to use Python, since I can't take it seriously (personal taste), but apparently R seems also to be a good alternative. But I'm tempted to give Mathematica a try, I like the syntax a lot.

@PauloCereda I think it is very powerful because it allows you to program in multiple paradigms — procedural, rule based, term replacement, functional, oo-like, etc. Not all of them have the same performance (some are more natural than the rest), but there is the possibility...

@PauloCereda he can't write about putting % at end of code lines as EOL is ignored, so I suspect it would be a rather short book.

@DavidCarlisle You can write the foreword. :) It will be a blast. :)
@rm-rf :)

@PauloCereda Nah, I'll just do the artwork

8:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL
@David: in other news, there's a very cheap book available on temporal logic around here: just £262,37. :)
What's wrong with Brazil.

@PauloCereda There is probably enough free stuff on the internet thing to keep you busy for a year or two

@DavidCarlisle shh don't let them know. :)

1 hour later…
10:03 PM
The status bar has changed!
6

@egreg So it has
Not an instant hit here

@JosephWright Indeed not... much too obtrusive :(

@egreg Yep, just noticed myself.

No mention of an upcoming change in the mod chat room

@MartinScharrer There's no drop down box telling how many votes one has given for the day. :(

10:09 PM
@egreg it's just moved there is a rep changes icon on the left, that gives similar info

@egreg The stats one?
There are some odd people on the network:

A: 2013 Moderator Election Q&A - Questionnaire

Evan Carroll 1) How would you deal with a user who produced a steady stream of valuable answers, but tends to generate a large number of arguments/flags from comments? Deal with them? I wouldn't do anything that would discourage them, they're making valuable contributions to SE. SE is not a paramilitary ...

@DavidCarlisle Not the number of given votes; I see only "Achievements" and "Inbox"

I WANT MY chat AND meta BUTTONS BACK!!!
8
Yeah, and, good evening :D

@tohecz chat is in the »StackExchange« menu and meta under »help«

@cgnieder I know. But it's stupid. And it looks unbelievably unpleasant with the warm desing of our site

10:14 PM
the black background doesn't fit at all to tex.sx

Q: How to get my hover-menu back?

Tim SchmelterWhat happened with the menu that comes if i hover over my username in the top-bar? It was one of the most used feature on Stackoverflow since i've used it regularly to get a quick overview over my recent activities or reputation changes. Is it possible to get it back somehow?

The colors can still be adjusted using the sites CSS (by the PowersThatBe).
Please just open a Meta feature-request for it.

@MartinScharrer well, I don't understand why they changed them, at first
@MartinScharrer I will, don't you know if one can access the old colours tho?

@JosephWright wow!

@MartinScharrer :-)

10:19 PM
@JosephWright The Q is if this is meant that way or if it's just a troll. Both is really good possible, unfortunatly.
@tohecz They might have backups of the old design?

@MartinScharrer I tried to find it cached on google, because the CSS style is IMHO unchanged. But it seems that google removed the caching since I last used it :(

10:31 PM
@tohecz For those following the discussion, this just out:
David Fullerton on December 04, 2013

The top bar of a Stack Exchange site has always been a bit of an odd place. It somehow combines user info, navigation, search, and a one-size-fits-all popup that includes hot network questions, a list of 100+ Stack Exchange sites, personal inbox messages, and other system notifications (lovingly referred to as The StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™).

It was, in retrospect, overdue for a face-lift which is why we’re excited to roll out a new top bar this week.

So, in the redesigned top bar, we wanted to make sure that it would look the same across all sites, and make it obvious that you’ …

@Werner I'll still post a feature request. The site is ugly now, and I want the guys above to know that I hate it.
4

@Werner Aaaagh!!! Horrible, illegible, inefficient. All complaints answered by "fix it with JQuery".
7

@tohecz Sure... I'd agree that one could have a site-specific colour for the top bar. Something that will make it blend in better.

@Werner Ha Ha "* Jin points out that technically it’s not quite black: it’s #212121."

What's the difference between these stars in chat?

10:38 PM
@Werner The first one is currently pinned by a moderator (me), so it will stick on top.

@MartinScharrer :D

@Werner I bet the white one is an easter egg coming with all positive comments about the new top bar

Q: Request for revert of the top bar background colour

toheczI would like to request that the background colour of the top bar gets reverted to the previous warm brownish. There are three reasons for this: The black top bar is the most emphasized element of the site now, which is surely not the intention. Its colour doesn't fit the warm, smooth and pleas...

.topbar { background-color: #F5DEB3 !important; }

@egreg today's score is at the top of the achievements dropdown as far as I can see. Not that I'm very impressed with the new layout:(

@DavidCarlisle That's clear. No mention of (the number of) votes I gave. I know that the possibility of voting posts is arcane to you… ;-)

10:55 PM
@egreg I've been voting more recently, even voted for you sometimes

11:06 PM
well, it seems to stand out only at TeX, ELU and Mi Yodeya, becase only these are based on warm colours
@MartinScharrer so we lost the last place of freedom and safety from moderators? :p

HOLY COW WHAT HAPPENED?!
2

@PauloCereda Naming convention used in Matlab is not as good as Mathematica. It happened.

@DonutE.Knot I meant some colour changes. :)

@PauloCereda tell me that

@tohecz I'm furious.
I'm enraged.
No words in my language can express my fury.

11:17 PM
@PauloCereda Then I refer to the starred comment by @Brent ;)

@tohecz LOL

@PauloCereda they completely mutilated our nice home :(

I'm gonna send my army of ducks. Cute yet angry, violent ducks. :)Paulo Cereda 3 mins ago
@tohecz I'm gonna burn SO down.

I have rolled back the changes. i.stack.imgur.com/tP4j5.png

Luckly Psmith has a --death-mode switch. :)

11:20 PM
@PauloCereda --death-match ? :)

@tohecz That too. :)
@JosephWright: Can I protest about it (in a very light and witty way, as we usually are) in our blog? :P
My profile photo is even uglier with this dark blackground. :P
And I can't understand the text, even with my glasses.

@PauloCereda .topbar, .topbar a, .topbar:hover, .topbar a:hover { background-color:#F5DEB3 !important; color:black !important; }

@MartinScharrer Good night, Martin! (nice to see you around) :)

11:35 PM
@MartinScharrer Night! (I should actually leave, too, I get up in 7.5 hours to have my French lesson)

@tohecz Night, Tom! :)

@tohecz Lernez bien le françois.

@egreg Desolé, chais pas qu'est-ce que c'est "lerner" :D

@tohecz You don't know modern franglais. :P

@egreg Non, je panse pas
