6:00 PM
Not everything that can be counted counts.

Everything counts in large amounts.

Count Basie could count, by all accounts.

But was he accountable?
And not everything that counts can be counted.
Einstein quotes have a lot of ....

One, ah ah ah.
Two! Ah ah ah.

... mystique ;-)

6:05 PM
Mystique doesn't count in horseshoes or hand grenades.

can she shift into the shape of a horse?
I've only heard of hand grenades. are there any other type?
like... elephant grenades? for really big explosions
oh, I suppose there are rocket propelled grenades

Well there are grenade launchers.

it must be pretty scary if one of those jams

Indeed.
Corporeal Korea :D

Time to heat the chili!

6:11 PM
oh. rocket propelled grenades aren't grenades. RPG is a backronym from the Russian
so... I guess I still don't know

oh! interesting

I know it's already funded, but they need to get to 60k to add HID support.
yay!

I might encourage some folks I know to pledge...

Yay!!!
You're the best!

6:19 PM
I see he's studying at the first uni to offer a computer science course in the world.
According to a youtube clip I saw the other day.

wot
Oh, the first originally?

Yes, originally.

Why are so many avatars broken?

Dunno. I used to like the old "Gravatars"
Creating my own little gallery was kinda fun.

you an still use gravatar, can't you? or can't you go back?
I'm still using gravatar
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I've ordered a starter kit :D

6:38 PM
Yes, I still use it to occasionally.

@MattЭллен Hooray!
ᴼᴥᴼ

I already have an arduino I need to think of something to do with... maybe I can combine them in some way

@Rob ♫♪♫♪hoist with his own petard / now daddy's become a bard♫♪♫♪

user116848
hi!

user116848
So you guys call non native speakers Pineapples? :D

user116848
6:48 PM
It looks funny :-)

user116848
But why? There is no Google entry.

because...
(searches for a quote)

Can I link the blog?

Matt Ellen on September 20, 2011

Hello there Paul!

I understand you’re staying in England to learn the language.

That should be “I am here to learn English.”

I think you mean “Please explain to me.”

Well, you were explaining your reason for coming to the UK. In English, we explain our reasoning by saying I am [present continuous verb] to [verb]. For example:

“I am reading to learn.”

“I am running to catch up.”

We would not say “I am running for catching up”.

So, Paul, how has your week been? …

So we have a new term for non-native speaker: pineapple.

user116848
@MattЭллен @cornbreadninja麵包忍者 :D

Robusto coined the term because NNS sounds like Ananas

user116848
Oh, I see.

(Non-Native Speaker)

user116848
6:52 PM
I don't hear it anywhere.

except here
where it originates

user116848
nods :-)

Q: Configuring default resolution and color depth for RealVNC's vncserver-x11-serviced?

JezWhen searching the web for information about how to configure the default resolution and color depth for RealVNC sessions, I always come across stuff that talks about passing commandline parameters to vncserver, such as vncserver -geometry 1024x768 or something. However, I have my system configu...

whew. i've just spent 2 days researching the answer to this one because RealVNC's docs are confusing and somewhat lacking
one might think that resolution would be an important consideration for VNC software. Apparently, not so important for RealVNC. it's virtually a footnote

Jez
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 wow, that has like 5 sexist organizations associated with it
women who code, girls who code. where's grannies who code?

7:19 PM
@MattЭллен backronym is a calque translation of the Russian for whatever backronym means.

@Mitch you sound less convincing that the wikipedia article on RPG
clearly a backronym is a Ronin that goes around the country anticlockwise. It's from Japanese, not Russian.

@MattЭллен Are you saying the wiki article was not convincing? And therefore disparaging me even more?

:eyeroll:
@Mitch not this time

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Interesting, but I don't know what I would use it for.

@MattЭллен Always wash your eyes out in your mouth first before putting it back in. It sounds gross but it's more sanitary than not doing it. Also, don't do it after eating hot peppers.

7:24 PM
@MattЭллен Ooh, you have an Auntie Clockwise too?

@Robusto she's a spinster

And that's another thing. Shouldn't it be spinstress? Shouldn't a spinster be an unmarried old man?
Yay, my son got us Louis CK tickets for tomorrow night!

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 mmm.. javascript on a stick. Deep fried, with type checking.

@Mitch No type checking. This is JavaScript.

@Robusto It's extra. like sugar on your frosted flakes
except your frosted flakes has no extra added sugar

7:27 PM
Strong data-typing is a crutch. Get yourself free. Otherwise you'll wind up like Java. And nobody wants that.
Every function argument should be a surprise. You shouldn't have to know ahead of time what you're going to get. I mean, what's the fun in that?

although the data from context.getImageData is typed
it's 8 bit uints
at least in FF it is
sadly, they're introducing types into ECMAScript 6

Wah.

Will they be enforced or optional?
They're determined to fuck up a good thing. I mean, once you open the door on getters and setters, where does it all end?

optional.
oh, maybe not

7:34 PM
Well, that's something. Optional as in truly optional or optional as in unless you "use strict;"?

I can't see it in the spec
must have been confusing it with something else

Whew. Crisis averted.
Time to get on me bike.

That's how I cerebrate these days.
Nothing like a good bike ride to work things out.

so you can type things for efficiency, but you don't have to, and it's basically so compilers can write fast javascript
I figure humans won't need to do that much

@MattЭллен Nice. Best of both worlds.

yeah, it seems like a good idea.
makes me wonder if committees are so bad after all :D

@MattЭллен Committees are OK when they're formed from people who have to live with the things that get decided.

ha! true enough

Assuming they're not all total retards, of course.

indeed. Brendon Eich has said some dumb stuff, politically speaking, but he knows programming.

8:38 PM
@MattЭллен I think people have the right to say stupid shit.
I think even @Cerberus would agree that Eich's opinions about gay marriage, while not in the mainstream, ought to be protected speech. Otherwise we have no freedom whatsoever.
Remember, if you think voicing certain unpopular opinions ought to be grounds for persecution, don't be surprised what happens to you once the popularity pendulum swings the other way.

I can't believe people don't realize that. Actually, I can believe it. It's human nature. The bandwagon impulse. It's one of the uglier sides of humanity.
What are you doing home, btw? Why aren't you out at the pub?
Surely it isn't too early to be tucking into a nice pork pie and pint of stout?

The way I see it, it's difficult to have a homophobe in charge of a company that is not homophobic, because it might prevent him from making sensible hiring and firing decisions. But if you need their opinion on something that they knows a lot about, probably best to ask them. Or maybe being anti gay marriage wouldn't have been a problem for hiring decisions, I don't know. Perhaps he's all "gay's fine, but they can't marry" or something. I dunno. It's complicated
and the media love to roast people alive
@Robusto I'm the keyholder for OxHack on Fridays.
so, even though noöne's turned up, I have said I'll stick around until 10pm

@MattЭллен Oh, nice.

so I will

8:47 PM
Friday must be a slow night there.

yeah. I think most nights are slow except Thursday, which is social night
sometimes it's busy, but not tonight. I guess the rain and cold kept folks indoors

@Robusto I'm jeal.

9:10 PM
—Hello? Is this the anonymous FBI tip-line?
—Yes, Mr. Benson.

user116848
Hilarious :D

9:54 PM
@MattЭллен You must upgrade man. I want to bore you with stuff. It can probably be built in 4.0. Does not use any fancy stuff I think.
Still alpha.

@JohanLarsson heh. I am thinking about getting my manager to pay for an upgrade, but I'll have to pick my moment. I don't have a windows PC at home at the moment. I broke it the other day

Wait for VS 2015 & C#6 then
If you can't get a subscription
Dunno if the latest express is better than what you use now?

Q: Hats are coming

Matt ЭлленWinterbash 2014 is on its way. It will run from 15 December 2014 to 4 January 2015. As with last year, if you don't want hats you can opt out. There is also the possibility of the whole site opting out before it starts. Nobody wants that, though, right?
