12:00 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Well, I'm trying it out.

Tell me how it goes. I can't try it right now because of my parents.
Anyway..
Ever since we attached the wireless router to our wired internet to provide wirelss network to my dad, who uses IPod I gave him, My mom has been complaining that the wireless router was slowing the internet down, even if I put the password so hard that even CIA wouldn't be able to crack it.
So, my dad, not wanting to give up wireless option, decided to attach the Belkin wire route modem to the wireless Linksys router, using extra cords. turns out it boosts the wavelegnth, and it boosts the interent.
TIL: Using multiple brand internet products is beneficial.

This game really sucks.
It's okay for being free, but I don't like it.

Hmm. I will try it first though.
I have low game expectations,
partly due to not having any game systems.

Aww.
I have a PS3, but I don't play it often.

one downfall of having Asian Mom...

12:08 AM
Just an asian mother?
Is your father of a different ethnicity?

Or being Asian, but other Asian friends either have game systems or actually allowed to play games.
@Mah Both my parents are Koreans.

@SonicTheHedgehog Ah, okay.

It just sucks balls.

Well, it sucks.

You can say that again.

12:10 AM
I'd rather not.

facevaults

I love being a literalist.

user19161
@sonic Hi!

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog What is it you want to ask?

@Jas yo.
I found out few days ago, that your blog has been removed. Why?

user19161
12:21 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Oh, because I am not writing anymore. And I don't think there is any point keeping what has been written there either...

*any point keeping what has been written there either*
You're joking, right?

@SonicTheHedgehog You're*

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Nope, not joking.

I want to read those again. I also wanted to comment, but Google decided to be a dick as usual and kept on giving me errors.

user19161
@Mahnax Heh.

user19161
12:23 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Well, it's not google in this case. It's just deleted forever!

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog You can always email me if you like.

I do not know it, that's the problem.
..oh.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Anyway I hope you get good results in April.

user19161
Hello @theta.

12:26 AM
@JasperLoy hello Jasper Loy

user19161
I am not sure if OS's is the correct way to pluralise OS @mahnax.

@Jas I just sent you an email. Check if it arrived.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Yes, received. You should go back to your books now.

yosh.
Wait, what books?

12:30 AM
@JasperLoy I would not use it.
5
A: Plural of an initialism that ends with the letter S

Antony QuinnA search on Google for OSes returns results from several established websites such as infoworld.com, osnews.com and linux.com, which suggests OSes is the accepted form.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Well, just a casual remark telling you to work hard.

This is not well-referenced, but I think it makes sense to use -es.

user19161
But I would not need to use this in writing, and if I do I would find some way to avoid it.

user19161
For example in this case I would just write operating systems in full.

12:32 AM
Exactly.
I would rather write operating systems.

user19161
@Mahnax Yay!

@JasperLoy Hmm, I just learned that ASCII is an acronym.

so, what is acronyms to IOS and/or OS?

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog What do you mean? OS=operating system.

iOS is not really an acronym, because it doesn't stand for anything.
It's just the typical Apple i- attached to OS.

12:34 AM
Oh.

user19161
What is iOS?

user19161
iOS (formerly iPhone OS prior to June 2010) is Apple Inc.'s mobile operating system. Originally developed for the iPhone, it has since been extended to support other Apple Inc. devices such as the iPod Touch, iPad, and Apple TV. Apple does not license iOS for installation on non-Apple hardware. , Apple's App Store contained more than 500,000 iOS applications, which have collectively been downloaded more than 24 billion times. It had a 26% share of the smartphone operating system units sold in the last quarter of 2010, behind both Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian. In May 2010 in the...

It is the operating system for some Apple devices.
iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone.

So many i's.

user19161
I never had any Apple products, though I have eaten many apples.

12:35 AM
Many, many i's.
My MacBook Pro has no i's.

user19161
There are many I's in this world too.

user19161
I have used Windows XP and Vista though.

Yech, Vista.

user19161
I think the Windows 8 logo is nice.

Window 7 owns your faces.

12:40 AM
I own my own face.
And Windows 7 is far inferior to Mac OS 10.7.
Or 10.6.

user19161
@Mahnax Lion?

@JasperLoy Yes sir.

user19161
@Mahnax Thank you madam.

We'll see.

@JasperLoy Um, no.
Madam is for females.

user19161
12:41 AM
@Mahnax Thanks for the lesson.

@SonicTheHedgehog How?
@JasperLoy Thanks for the insult.
Not that I actually care…

By comparing Pros and Cons.

Oh, let's do it.

We need fair judge, though, with expert knowledge on both systems.

user19161
Yes, I am excited.

12:42 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Nah, that's silly.
Let us just throw details of the OSes at each other and compare.
Heh, see what I did there?

Icwhutudidthar.
Now, Pros only?

Okay, let us begin.

user19161
Phoronix often has tests like that for different benchmarks.

Pros only.

5 minutes for each of us to type out Pros.

12:43 AM
I do not know Windows 7 much, so I can't come up with many cons.
@SonicTheHedgehog How about we take turns saying them?

No, you do Lion, I do 7.

I'll let you go first, if you like.

Same time. 5 minutes from now.

@SonicTheHedgehog You aren't allowed to do research, I want this to be a back and forth discussion.
From personal experience.
It's more fun that way.

Well, I am kind of busy right now...
Later, then.

12:45 AM
Oh, with what?

Studying.

I see.

Big test tomorrow.

When, then?

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Then talk another time.

12:45 AM
IDK.

Later tonight, or another day entirely?

But for now, I have to memorise all of the Bill of Rights and each aspects.

39 secs ago, by Mahnax
Later tonight, or another day entirely?

user19161
Oh no, memory work.

@Mah another day.
@Jasper precisely reason why I hate Social Studies.

12:47 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Aww, okay.

I am good at thinking and putting things together, but not memorising stuff.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog How is your math?

@Jasper Not bad. I managed to snatch B- before the end of the marking period.
I get As in science, but we are learning physics now.
shudders

I like Physics.

user19161
I like bananas.

12:49 AM
Oh, I just remembered! I have to tell mom that I got 97 at Science Quest.
@Jasper Bananas are radioactive.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog Didn't know that.

Eᵏ = ½mv²

user19161
Bananas are always sweet, but apples and oranges may be sour.

@SonicTheHedgehog No, they aren't.

@Mah well, they have more Potassium than other foods.

12:50 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Potassium ≠ radioactive.

@Mah ╚(•⌂•)╝

@SonicTheHedgehog —

But Potassium is fun to throw in water!

@SonicTheHedgehog As is sodium.

@Mah also as in Francium.

12:52 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog And cesium.

But I would be wasting one of the most rare alkaline metals on Earth.

But Fr and Cs are not easily come by.
Maybe even rubidium would be satisfactory.

Don't forget scandium.

Scandium is in group III, how is it related to the others?

@Mah its rare to see them in groups.

12:54 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Whatever do you mean?

Its not the fact that it is hard to refine.

I fail to understand what you are trying to tell me.

You see, for other rare elements, at least there are several ores scattered around.
Hold your horses.

I mean the group thing.

It is that scandium is scattered thinnly around Earth's crust, making it difficult to gather enough to refine them.
@Mah group thing?

12:55 AM
1 min ago, by Sonic The Hedgehog
@Mah its rare to see them in groups.

oh, I meant that it is hard to gather.

Well, I'm off, dinnertime.

No group hugs in chat, per @RegDwight.

He's forbidding everything else in chat. I figured he probably did that as well, or would if it occurred to him.

user19161
12:57 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Look up "joke".

@Rob it says that the page could not be found.

Oh, I was just looking at that question.

This is actually kind of an interesting question. Poorly written, to be sure, but it could worth our time.
@SonicTheHedgehog You need to be able to read deleted questions.

Dang it...

And that requires 10k rep!

1:27 AM
So get busy.

Let me use Google Cache.
smirks

Might not be cached. Maybe not up long enough.

494 is like 10k.

1:28 AM
Well, that XBox isn't going to play itself, so ...

"You could say a doughnut is healthy if you compare it to bacon but you can say a doughnut is very unhealthy if you compare it to a salad."
@Mah whatever do you mean?

Both are numbers.

I should hang out in Christianity more often.

47 secs ago, by Robusto
Both are numbers.
There.

Hello @Kit!

Where?

@Kit when is your son's birthday? Did you finally find out the gift to give him?

Oh!
@SonicTheHedgehog Tuesday.
Yes.

Next Tuesday?
Or did it pass?
And what is the gift?

@Robusto I agree.
February 28th. Hot Wheels tracks is what we finally settled on.

1:33 AM
I voted to undelete.

I did as well.

Oh, how many votes does it take?

Just need one more.

@Kit Excellent Choice. Wish I had one...

@SonicTheHedgehog Get farming.

1:34 AM
@Mah vote! So I will be able to see it!

@SonicTheHedgehog I don't have 10k.
Otherwise, I would.

Hello @nohat.

Also, we got Ratchet & Clank 4 for him.

@nohat Yo.

Hello everyone

@KitFox Which one is that?

1:35 AM
I was typing comments in a wrong forum
so I came here instead

@nohat The whole forum was wrong, or it was just your error?

@nohat As in you went into wrong chat looking for us?

@Mahnax Which game or which son?

@KitFox Game.

@Rob Jinx!

1:36 AM
Well, I guess I'm looking for FumbleFingers and tchrist
but I'm SOL?

which is the wrong forum

@nohat Thems don't come round here much.

@Mahnax That's not it.

1:38 AM
sigh

@KitFox Ehh?

That's a different question.

I suppose it isn't.
@nohat Sorry.

@Mah I am guessing you said something wrong?

Well, here's your FumbleFingers now, @nohat.

1:40 AM
@Fumble yo.
What is this, Mod convention?

oh lord! can't a guy lurk? hello all
i am not a mod

@FumbleFingers It's just that someone was looking for you, you see.

@Fumble To me you are.

I was just worried that our discussion of "penultimate" was spilling out

@Mahnax oh? who? why?
@nohat yes i partly came here on account of that

1:41 AM
1 min ago, by Mahnax
Well, here's your FumbleFingers now, @nohat.

Penultimate is my uncle. His wife is antepenultimate.

I really want to star that.

hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Guess what fear it refers to.

@Robusto preantepenultimate is grandpa

@SonicTheHedgehog Fear of long words.

1:42 AM
@mah I cast the last undelete vote so it's visible now

@simchona Merci.

brief pause while I get glass of vino - can't type on a dry throat

@mah de rien

@Robusto Penn Jillette is my uncle.

1:42 AM
I can see the question now!

@KitFox I met him. In fact, I was on stage with him in Boston. Twice.

@sonic yup, it's undeleted

@Robusto Yeah, but did you shoot pool with the Barenaked Ladies?

anyway, my take on "penultimate" is

@Rob really?

1:43 AM
I like the word and use it frequently
but I know from personal experience if you use it in a way that the audience must understand what it means, then you are in for a world of disappointment

@Nohat if you use it frequently, please give me meaning of it in layman's words. Dictionary online do not justice.

@nohat Is there any consensus "higher up" re ELU "dumbing down"?

it means "next to last"

As in, second last?

I haven't heard anything from TPTB about "dumbing down" but they don't tell us anything

1:45 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Yes, really. I took my son to see their show, and they used me as a volunteer twice. After the show they were out in the lobby and mobbed by people, so I figured I'd just move on by, but Penn called me by name and made me come over and talk with him. He said I did a great job. Real regular guy.

Jeff used to come onto the site and go into a frenzy and then blame it all on how things aren't going the way he expected

@SonicTheHedgehog don't believe him - he's american - it means "last but one" to brits

Ugh if this becomes ESL I'm not staying.

@simchona Seconded.

Bye then!

1:46 AM
I will do everything in my meagre 4k power to keep that from happening.

@FumbleFingers How is "last but one" different than "second to last"?

I'm usually suspect of claims that things are getting "dumbed down" recently or claims like that
due to the problem of the recency illusion

@nohat personally i don't think i've ever seen anything jeff said that I'd take issue with

@kit you want this to be ESL?

@KitFox Hey, we still get good questions, bad ones are closed, so I don't think there's a problem.

1:46 AM
We have always had lots of questions from very naive people

@nohat The recency illusion is worse now than it's ever been.

@KitFox it's not, except apparently "last but one" is something of a briticism

@Robusto lol

It may not be an illusion.
Has anyone actually analyzed it?
@FumbleFingers Keep looking then.

@KitFox It might not be, but I think if people are concerned they should do the analysis before they start whining about it

1:48 AM
@Fumbling Any reason you are not capitalizing letters? Just asking.

@nohat Agreed.

@nohat I think the ratio of trivia has gone up a lot in the year i've been here

Otherwise, it's just mindless whinging
to use a britishism

But I'm not the one shouting that the sky is falling either.

@Kit "The Sky is falling! The Sun came down and hit me on the face!"

user19161
1:49 AM
@SonicTheHedgehog Maybe the sky is not falling down but you are flying up?

@SonicTheHedgehog i type with two fingers on one hand - fag in the other, can't reach caps shift easily

God I miss smoking.

@Kit Don't.

I've never smoked.

So ... my question now that the comparative adjective question is undeleted: Unique is an adjective. Can it be used in a comparative and/or superlative form? Logically I would say no, but grammatically the idea could be expressed, even though it would make no sense, except figuratively (and poorly at that). Thoughts?

1:49 AM
@KitFox i will have a deep drag just for you

Bad influence to your children.

@sonic Dont judge

@Robusto i thought we addressed that one

@FumbleFingers Thanks. What brand?

There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco, 1000 which are dangerous.

1:50 AM
@simchona Shut up.
@SonicTheHedgehog I know, that's why I quit.

@FumbleFingers I don't recall that.

@KitFox only the best - hand-rolled old holborn - feel it in your lungs

@FumbleFingers Oh, rollies. My faves.
I gotta start calling you Rollie Fingers now, huh?

@Robusto of course "unique" is comparable :-)

1:51 AM
@FumbleFingers If I'm going to damage my lungs with smoke, it had better be getting me high.

@Robusto i will do some searching in a mo. i'm sure i posted an answer citing some techincal writer where the "amount of uniqueness" was significant

@nohat That is a most unique way to look at the issue.

For some reason when Kit gets angry it shakes me down to core.

Oh, did I hurt your feelings @sim?

@Oli yo.
@Wip yo.

1:52 AM
Oh dear.

@Robusto no can oblige there at the moment - have to wait until i see the right man - meantime, i could offer you a glass of cheap vino!

@Mana yo.

Hey, what's going on?

@FumbleFingers Already had my cheap vino for the day. Besides, it's harder on the lungs than smoke.

user19161
Let's not overreact.

Oli
@Mana another day another flag, eh?

Let's Party like it is 1999! WOOOOOOOOO

@Oli I see we're all responding to the same thing.

Hey, Gnome's been about today.
It must be infectious.

1:53 AM
@Oli "Shut up" appears to be a popular target these days.

user19161
A hundred messages were deleted in math room that day.

I was right after all.

@Jasper why? Troll fight?

The Republicans want to party like it's 1929.

Oli
@Mana Indeed.

1:54 AM
Someone flagged the shut up, and a flock of mods appeared.

@Robusto Nah, we could vote by then. Move it back more.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog They were pretty harmless. I have never flagged anything as offensive except the post against the Jews.

God I missed you Mana.
Just as in friend, ya know...

@SonicTheHedgehog Hey, thanks. How have you been lately?

@kit actually? Yes. I don't recall doing anything to you.

1:55 AM
@KitFox 1929 was an important year in Republican presidencies. Herbert Hoover was just elected and ... and ... hmm, lemme see ... something else happened that year ... something important ... besides the St. Valentine's Day massacre in Chicago ...

@Mana that reminds me...
I have Bad news, I don't know whether to break it or not...

Black Monday is a term used to refer to certain events which occur on a Monday. It has been used in the following cases: Historic Events * Black Monday, Dublin, 1209 – when a group of 500 recently arrived settlers from Bristol were massacred by warriors of the Gaelic O'Byrne clan. The group had left the safety of the walled city of Dublin to celebrate Easter Monday near a wood at Ranelagh, when they were attacked without warning. Although now a relatively obscure event in history, it was commemorated by a mustering of the Mayor, Sheriffs and soldiers on the day as a challenge to th...

@simchona Well, maybe she did not mean it the way you perceived it.

@Robusto Oh right! Now I remember.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 (October 1929), also known as the Great Crash, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929, was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its fallout. The crash signaled the beginning of the 10-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries and did not end in the United States until 1947. Timeline The Roaring Twenties, the decade that led up to the Crash, was a time of wealth and excess. Despite the dangers of speculation, many believed that the ...

I gasped because I thought maybe you failed your exams.

No, nothing is wrong with me.

1:57 AM
@Mana Don't add fuel to fire.

@SonicTheHedgehog We'll be the judge of that.

@Kit You must have some kind of precognition.
*bitter chuckle*
I got my rejection letter yesterday.

@JasperLoy Oh, no, I was replying to Chaos' thing.
@SonicTheHedgehog Ahhhh...geez, that sucks man.

@SonicTheHedgehog Oh no!

Says there was nothing wrong with the exam, but too many peeps.

1:58 AM
@sonic aww, I'm sorry

@SonicTheHedgehog A rejection letter for what?

@SonicTheHedgehog You mean that you did well enough, but there were too many other competitors?

Lol like I needed to go there.
@Kit basically.

Who are they? I will take them out for you!
