possible answer invalidation by Lachlan Barclay on question by Lachlan Barclay: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/162001/revisions
RELOAD! There are 3784 unanswered questions (91.3704% answered)

Good luck starting work tomorrow, EBrown. Hopefully it's going to be a good experience, so you don't need to say "Oh no"... :-)

12:21 AM
yeeesh @holroy now you've gone and also reviewed it ...

Yeah... I asked so many questions, that I was so close to reviewing it, so I did. :-)

fwiw the way you read the input file is pretty bad practice :/
and the exception declarations are partly necessary ...
IOException is checked and needs to be declared as thrown or handled.

It is? It is lifted straight out of a highly upvoted Stack Overflow question... :-)

it's the pre java 7 way of doing it..

Didn't check the version of the answer I used for reference. But it is similar to the original code done by the OP... How do you do it in the newer version?

12:25 AM
there's a better way, resembling a python with block, that I (nonchalantly) used in my answer without mentioning it...

Q: Print data from workers to terminal in python.

Kyle SponableBit of background, this is a small script to give an idea what a brute force is to a NON technical audience. It will read in a simple dictionary and do the job. Ive tried a few ways but I want to have the 8 or so to make it work. Eventually I am going to have all 8 spit into a CURSES interface ...

it's called try-with-resources

@Vogel612 Seems like useful stuff, indeed.
Note that the properties file doesn't only use Character as the key... There is a "ch" hidden in there...

which gets subsequently ignored in encode, because charAt returns only chars ..
still a good observation you should incorporate in your answer ;)

I might... But I really like your answer better than mine! :-D
Why the static initializer instead of a constructor?

12:30 AM
because the map is static

Is that kind of a singleton behavior mechanism?

yes and no ...
static fields are guaranteed to have only one "incarnation", which means they are basically singletons.
but singletons are classes, and fields are basically just pointers

I see that distinction, yes
Couldn't the encode and decode also become static, removing the need for instantiation of the class in general?

to cut the chase short: a static field points to the same memory adress, regardless of which class you access it from, even more: it's stored in the very same place
@holroy yeap, they could.
the fun begins when you have different encoders and want to supply different encoding tables.
especially when they need to be interchangeable
also there's only so much you can put into an answer for a beginner.

True on that last point...

12:34 AM
let alone the fact that it's 2:30 AM local time and I really need a round of sleep now...

@Mat'sMug Got a minute for an Excel question?

In column A I got text, a unique identifier. In column E, I note whether the identifier is Oke or NOK. I want a list of all NOK identifiers and why they're NOK (data in column F) in a list on the next page. Without all the identifiers that are Oke.
I'm currently doing this by hand. Must be a way to automate it, probably even without VBA, but I'm having trouble describing the problem in terms useful for a search.

@Mat'sMug And he's posted it yet one more time. codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/162235/…

under his other account

Yep.

@Mat'sMug Aye

Hammer time?

1:45 PM
from the [Data] Ribbon tab
Making the code simpler and more efficient is the realm of Code Review provided that it works as intended, but fixing known issues is what you should be asking here on Stack Overflow... except the question should be clearly stated, and it isn't. See Minimal, Complete, and Verifiable example and How to Ask. — Mat's Mug 1 min ago
given it's bugged up only in a case that's beyond their assignment, and that the CR post makes no mention of any issue with the code, I'm willing to let it go.
apparently not 200 though
lol

MCVE ^^ @Mat'sMug

you need column headings

yeah I was getting there... but you need headings if you want tables

1:52 PM
@Mat'sMug Headings?

Column1 Column2 Column3 Column4
whatever

Ah, right.

the idea is that every column has a name

I can do that, no problem.

:+1:

1:54 PM
Then what, make it a query of sorts?

then from the Home Ribbon tab click "format as table"
you'll get autofilters for free

So I copy all the data and filter afterwards?

you don't even need to copy anything

why would you put it in a separate sheet in the first place??

Oh. Because I know filters, but those need a copy TTBOMK.
@Vogel612 Summary reasons.

1:57 PM
Pivot table ftw

Whatever crap is broken gets summarized for the guys on the floor to fix.
They only need the identifier and remark.

soo ... you're building an issue-tracker in excel?
3

@Vogel612 that would work, except there's not really anything to pivot
and lol

@Vogel612 Guys on the floor have no computer. So, kind of.
They build modules. I test them. Tell them what doesn't work. They fix it.
So I basically print out a sheet of the remarks and put it on the module, yea.

so you got your table with autofilters on?
take the OK/NOK column, click the dropdown, select "NOK"

1:59 PM
Yea, that filters them in place, not in the summary on the second sheet.
I'm not new to Excel, I know how to filter. I have no clue how to only copy data that complies with the filter.
Query maybe?

right. make a pivot then

Excel not being a database doesn't mean you can't abuse it as such.
@Vogel612 I'll watch that again when I got home & audio.

[ab]using a pivot table will get you there
select any cell in your table, click Insert > Pivot table
(on a new sheet)
that new sheet becomes your summary
setup the pivot with proper filters
done
pivot needs to be refreshed manually when the source data changes

That's not a problem.
For now it's filtering wrong, but I'll get that fixed soon enough.
Works, for some values of works.
I'll keep hitting it with a hammer till it fits in the format I have in mind.
Pivot tables to the rescue, thanks :-)

there's a checkbox to use the legacy Excel 2003 pivot layout, I think that's what you're after
(in the pivot table format options)

2:11 PM
Well, it somehow assumed I want to calc stuff.

that's what pivot tables are for

So now the format is right, but the data wrong.

aggregating stuff

I don't want an aggregate, I just want a selection :-)

you don't want anything under values
put them back the way you had them, as column labels

2:13 PM
Ok, and then a different layout.

yes

I had them under rows, not under columns.

whatever
right-click and select "pivot table options", then go to the "display" tab. check the "classic pivot table layout" box

possible answer invalidation by Andy on question by Andy: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/162232/revisions

then right-click your "1.1.4" label and un-check the "subtotal 1.1.4" option

2:17 PM
I can toggle the totals for rows and columns under totals and filters.
Almost.

@Mat'sMug Aye, took me a while to understand that would fix it for the entire table, not for just that value.
:-D

you can hide the +/- butons and dropdowns if you want

To make matters worse, this computer uses the Dutch version of Excel. Which is awful. If it wouldn't be a hazzle with licenses I'd re-install the thing in proper English.
@Mat'sMug Yea, I'm trying to figure that part out now. Should be able to figure that part out by myself :P
Oh, I just hid the column names together with the filter buttons. #Fun

2:24 PM
#Nope

A little cheating goes a long way. #ThereIFixedIt

facepalm
select any cell in the pivot table. click "Pivot table tools" at the top of the Ribbon, takes you to the "Options" tab. the "Show" section at the far right has toggle buttons for the field list, +/- buttons and field headers

Oh, the +/- weren't the problem. It's those pesky dropdown buttons.
Those +/- properly hid when told to.
Field headers removes the text as well.
Of the headers.
Oh well, don't need them.
Now to get rid of the top row...
It's probably listed as a filter name or something.
Thanks for putting up with me :-)

Because extending your answer I see it natural to only have static methods, and no instantiation of the class at all, but then it is kind of limited to one given encoding/decoding. For another "language" you need another class.
And extending my answer to the fullest, one could provide various property files for the different coding schemes, but it would/could be useful to generalize the actual methods. And then a new "language" would just require a new property file.

6:31 PM
both cases are probably YAGNI
especially since the question was only a learning exercise...
then again, when did YAGNI prevent anyone from writing an answer ;)

True, true, and even more true?!
There could be a whole lot of learning in these answers... :-D
Especially related to static vs non-static, and generalization vs specialization. But it could be slightly heavy matter also...
