@Mat'sMug In general, not in my IDE either.
@Quill Are you sure you got the right one?

Yeah, I'm sure

Wait, the starred message changed now.

I saw you do it.

That's part of the joke

I might as well star a message so my stars don't expire.
Help me pick one.

Wait, what is that room?

@Hosch250 lol

4:03 AM
@Legato That room is operated by the NSA.

^^ meta-bait

@Mat'sMug I don't star "lol"s, so don't expect one from me.

@Mat'sMug How many stars can you apply to a message as a mod?

don't you dare re-post the re-post

UNLIMITED probs.
Cause 'pins'

4:06 AM
I don't get the question

@Mat'sMug How much star ammo you got?

Also, selfie stars.

hmm I don't count "pin" as "star"

Because BB only reported you starring my message, and I have two.

They effectively work the same way.

same as everyone else

And enable self starring, xD

Hey all. I have a quick question if you don't mind my interjecting.

From my understanding.

Do mods automatically have RO powers?

@MotokoKusanagi NP.

@MotokoKusanagi what's up?

@MotokoKusanagi Shoot
That ping bomb though.

@Quill yes

I haven't coded anything in ages. Does anyone have any tips regarding how to get back into the groove?

@MotokoKusanagi Pick a project.

start easy, do something fun

Don't let it be over ambitious or something insurmountable. But something that interests you and you would find fun. is great.

I can't stress the thing. The most of my learning has come from such. You want to pick something that you at least know how/where to start and then understand where to look for for the things that you don't yet understand or know.
Also I like CodeEval

the thing with code is that you already have a bunch of reference working implementations (and corresponding reviews), in multiple languages

Is that the reason?

I really enjoy coding. Like a lot. But I have a neurological disorder that hinders pretty much anything I want to do. I guess I should have been more direct. There are plenty of super neat things I can code; I was moreover trying to ask how I can make coding more interesting; and thanks for the project links. You are all awesome.

I always try to avoid the other entries like the plague. xD

4:14 AM
You could always contribute to an open source project.

Coding is more awesome if it's a step towards a project you enjoy, no?

lol yeah they're kind of spoilers ;-)

I've got to focus on something, so I'll be heading out. (I'll be idling in Mintrue, though)

Wish there were something I could contribute to.
By the way what's with the SO ready to help thing?

I can say I know c, c++, python, and java; but that wouldn't be entirely accurate as my memory has a tendancy of erasing itself

that seems like a good start after a long hiatus

I can say I've written C++ (basic), Java (more basic), Python (basic), C# (not sure where), JS (basic).
@MotokoKusanagi That sounds like a good idea.

Happy you got a shirt. Thought that was familiar, I read that page before, but I don't have a twitter so.

@Mat'sMug Talking about RD, can you unassign me from all those refactorings?

I'll still try to do them as I can, but I don't need to be assigned now I'm not actively working on it.

@Legato stick "#SOreadytohelp" into your "about me" section of your SO profile

I'd prefer a #CRPreparedToReview one anyway.

@Hosch250 sure

@Mat'sMug From my understanding of that page you also need to tweet it.

4:21 AM

Q: Shell script to detect router slider status

andyADDI have openwrt router (TP-Link MR3040) and on boot I have it check the slider (AP,WISP,3G/4G mode) the goal was to have it execute the current "slider status" vs the old one, or do nothing if its the same (before reboot) Just want critique on making it more elegant. #!/bin/sh test=$(cat /root/...

@Heslacher Yeah, I understood that, I just wasn't sure what you meant by types.

I meant with networking in general. I wrote a chat server and client recently and it works...but I realized yesterday that it only works locally...I thought it had something to do with my needing to enable the port fowarding for the port on my router, and giving it access on the firewall -- but still no success.

We should stick BB into the *-mouthed chatrooms.

ah, okay, fair enough
@Hosch250 send me the linkz

I can use it here on multiple computers, but the goal was for it to work over the web, and that's the challenge -- I've tried a lot to fix the issue, but just don't know where to go from here.

Apparently it won't cross domain link the chatrooms to the one bot

Thanks for the edit @Legato

My pleasure. Thanks for the advice.
How does one decide a sufficient bounty amount?

4:49 AM
Just depends. If it is your own question, decide what its worth for you. If its a question you are highly interested, decide what its worth for you. If you want to bounty a question because it is a long living zombie, its basically the same answer ;-)

I keep 50 (minimum/default) for interesting questions I'd want to see answered. 100 for really good ones. 150 for my own zombies, and more than that is very seldom

I looked for the issue, but could not find it, and I summarized that by the line: "From a readability and maintenance perspective I believe it is clearly better"
I think it is in the hacks you have in place to handle the code formatting requiring changes to the newline and other characters in the code ... essentially escaping control characters.
Unfortuinately, you can't easily debug the compiled code ;-).

Thanks.
The lesson is, for simple text substitution, a simple loop (one layer of indirection) is just as good as "direct" out.write() bytecode.
Whatever performance difference, if any, is outweighed by the unnecessary complication of the code.

You're welcome. As an aside, the compiled variant seems to have a sensitivity to something environmental, about half-way through it slows down for a bit, then catches up again.
I think your assessment is about right there, too.

My approach might be justified if the template language had conditionals and loops.

I would consider that code a last resort, but, possible.

But is clearly overkill for this narrowly defined problem.

Out of interest, the code slows down a lot if I include the build-time of the Map with the tempalte substitution.

5:57 AM
monking @all

Here it is without the map times:

And here it is if you include the Map time:
INFO 2015-08-31 01:59:58.430 net.tuis.ubench.UBench(press): UBench suite Templating: completed benchmarking all tasks using mode SEQUENTIAL in 1162.722ms

So, 40% or more of the time is just in map building,
One last thing, the timing of the creation of the templates, even though it is a 1-off thing, takes:
Generated monkey in 2643808nanos
Generated inmem in 351777767nanos
So, 2.6milliseconds for monkeys, and 352 for fish. That additional 350millis is much more than what the monkey uses "extra" for a million iterations.
A million loops is not enough to recoup the cost of the compiled template.

The O.P. talks about an error
But doesn't say what and where
Only says that n->right is uninitialized

I thought they pointed to a specific line and said this error happens if this variable is null, but I'm probably too unfamiliar with C++ to have understood that. I guess I should only include the suggestion to move to SO if I'm certain it's a good idea.

it fails on this line:

if (n->right != nullptr && !s.empty() && n->right == s.top())

where n->right - is uninitialized value

Can you help me to spot an error?

@IsmaelMiguel "I may be one of the few who connects knowledge and reputation" sounds like something you say to talk yourself up in an interview.

I've done ~190 four or five times

soo.. 17 upvotes and 2 accepts should award the badge

@Quill I clicked to re-open by mistake

@SuperBiasedMan it's also a nice way to sound like a prick, in certain contexts :P

@Quill Thanks

I came close to capping last week for writing my most popular post on this site ever for a pretty trivial answer I almost decided not to post.

not meant to insult, apologies if it did

@Quill Isn't that generally how job interviews are?

10:42 AM
@SuperBiasedMan I wouldn't know, but I'd assume my logic applies to most other things

@SuperBiasedMan depends on the interviewers

@Quill Don't worry about it

@Vogel612 Definitely true. I've had the most casual interviews because no-one in the animation industry here knows what to do for an interview, so it just ends up being a chat.

That's quite cool, actually
You end up in a relaxed environment
You talk about things of your interest
And the interviewer can slide in a few key questions

Yeah, though I would say they'd need to know what they're doing if they want to slide in key questions, usually they just want the interview to be over with.

10:48 AM
But then they don't know who to hire
Maybe they just throw a few dices and pick the "winner"

@SuperBiasedMan No.

I read that before, but my brain doesn't get there

@IsmaelMiguel That is what it feels like a bit, but I guess I've been interviewing for a lot of the more low level stuff.

@SuperBiasedMan You could use their inexperience for your own good
The best you can do is to collect information
