Night.

So, it turns out that that spammer from earlier today has actually plagiarized the other answer to the same question. I was too focused on that and didn't notice until someone flagged it. Now I have sent that account to the fiery pits below.

Nice.
Must have missed that.
Are you planning on running for mod again?

Yes

Cool.

What about you?

Not sure.

i'm happy to hear that, Jamal :)

At the end, I'll probably flip a coin, or just take the dive.
Just came back to say that this is super underloved:

@KarthikT As it is currently stated, we can't be sure that the code works ("can someone check if this is correct please.") and so it will probably closed as off-topic on Code Review until has checked that their code indeed works as expected. — Morwenn 58 secs ago
@logc Asking to debug the code hints that the code is broken to start with. Therefore, it will also be closed as off-topic if posted on Code Review. — Morwenn 54 secs ago

Greetings, Programs.
IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!!!

Ahhh.... so, the question I have is......
should i go away next week? I am 40/60 sure I should, my wife is 60/40 ....

About being a mod?

No, about going to a cabin in northern canada with a ratio of about 1,000,000 to one mosquitos to people.... no flushing loo, etc.
the water is still only 8 degrees.....

11:55 AM
You probably don't want my opinion ;) I'm not much of an outside person

Actually, there is a flushing loo, but the outhouse often works better ;-)
There is internet, though ;-)

You could always throw a coin if you're both together 50/50
Unless one opinion matters more than another ones ;)

I am alergic to the mosquitos.... ;-) I get these big welts, and it itches for days.....
so, I take two different antihistamines, then drink in the evenings....

@rolfl If you've got an occasion to experience different things, then by all means do it. Otherwise you'll only regret it later :)

I tend to sleep really, really welll ;-0

11:59 AM
@rolfl So in other words, you're almost certainly going.

@Morwenn My wife's grandfather built the place, I go a few times a year..... normally closer to the end of the summer when the lake is warmer than.... 14 degrees

@Donald.McLean Looks like all his options are to delay it ;)

It's complicated by me thinking my parents were arriving as immigrants next week, but now they are arriving the following week,.
so, I wasn't going to go, but now I can

@CaptainObvious Hypothetical?

@Quill What's hypothetical about it?

> Question: What is the fastet [sic] way to search and extract the values?

The source code looks real to me

Hmm. It seems like OP is asking, here's my code, is there a hypothetical way to do this faster

Isn't that what all performance questions around here are about?
2
The "hypothetical" close reason is for questions where the current code is hypothetical.

12:28 PM
Sometimes performance questions relate to the way the program is executed and sometimes they relate to the method that the program takes in achieving its answer. OP seems like the latter and I was obviously mistaken, in that it isn't off-topic. Close vote retracted and comments duly noted.

Thank you, I haven't realize that such a service for code reviews exists. I will definitely use it in the nearest future with some more scala examples — HeeL 44 secs ago
@M.Allam Some quick code review: to save stack space, you shouldn't pass search_key, Graph and visited_nodes to the recursive function: you can store them as class member variables because recursive functions all get the same set of those parameters. Neighbors do not need a queue: it is sufficient to have them in an array and iterate over them, because FIFO functionality is not needed here. Also the hassle with subtracting 1 from current_node seems unnecessary: you can just use 0-based indexing in the recursive function. — Serge Rogatch 56 secs ago

Is bacon one of the up-sides?

Huh, funny, the biggest up-side as far as I can see, is being able to have more influence in the direction/future of the site I feel strongly about.

I would concur with @rolfl on those two.

As for the site direction, I feel that the progress on that front is far enough along for me to feel comfortable with it's direction, it can't really go wrong, now.
As a pro-tem mod, my responsibilities are concluded enough to feel satisfied with my role.
I will miss the extended community a lot, but feel that others would be better in that regard too.
And, it will be only temporary... that's the way I feel about it.

I am old enough to believe that, in a year or two, when more elections are held, I can volunteer again.
@Donald.McLean That's true, but remember, I am not stepping away from the site, just the mod position.
I would like to think that my "voice" will still be heard.

@rolfl Nothing stops you from adding some on Skype or whatever, or does it?

2:11 PM
@rolfl I'm sure it will.

@skiwi I have been around in those rooms long enough to be on friendly terms with folk, but, no, twitter is about where it's at.
Also, I take it for granted, but I guess I should say it out loud... I have 100% confidence in @Jamal and @200_success (I assume both will run, though I have not heard them say so explicitly). There is a very strong follow-on core in the mod team, and they will be able to help the new mod(s), and I trust them to do the right thing.
Really, although I sometimes feel it is all about me, it is not. The site is in good hands regardless.

I've heard Jamal stating in chat he's running.
As long as you don't vanish completely, we'll be fine. Perhaps you haven't noticed, but you're very important in this community. People trust you. You have instant respect the moment you walk into a question/chat and that has nothing to do with your diamond.

D800, wow, that's the über big brother of the D90 I have laying around.

Nothing super super expensive then... But yeah full-frame of about 2-3K and lenses of 1K each...
Hope you are taking pictures in manual or semi-manual then ;) (aparture or shutter speed locked)

2:55 PM
@Mast you didn't think that was serious did you?

@skiwi I mostly shoot A-priority... unless I do flash, wich I do a lot

@Mat'sMug How about I'll make it easier for you? I can nominate you instead :)

@rolfl You got any prime lenses as well?

I think I will have fun nominating people ;-)

24-70 on f2.8 is already very very nice

2:56 PM
@skiwi Yeah, 60mm macro, 50 f1.4 and some old stuff (100mm manual).

@That1Guy short snippets like this are not acceptable on CR.SE — jonrsharpe 3 mins ago

@rolfl 50 f1.4 yep... then we are talking

I'm starting to suspect jonrsharpe has his own bot for scanning SO comments.

Good thing my teacher reconsidered his approach. We'll have to make the android app from scratch and not polluted with his horrible code beforehand

Without really knowing much about jonrsharpe, I kinda wish he will be running for CR moderator.
@rolfl Maybe you will end up nominating all the people?

2:58 PM
@Mat'sMug Knowing you, you'd write a query and iterate over the result in
;-)

Actually, I have mixed feelings about participating in it much beyond chat. I could ask/add some interesting comments/questions for the mod questionaire.
but I don't want to 'endorse' anyone (or sink them either)

@rolfl I'm looking forward to reading your questions.
The questionnaire is one of the best parts of the election.

With somewhat of a small site (and this chatroom), basically everyone who will run for mod knows one another somewhat well, it will certainly require some thought.

@Mast it is also one of the most challenging, and potentially stupid ones.

@rolfl Why would it be stupid?

3:01 PM
to be fair, people who have never been a mod have no real idea of what tools are available as a moderator, to deal with situations.
So, "How would you deal with situation X" is not something most candidates would be able to answer properly

@Quill Definitely.

@rolfl I'm sure police officers feel the same

Mods have on-the-job training.... basically.

@rolfl Well, they want to become a mod for some reason. So they better have a plan, regardless of experience.
Ofcourse, the plan will often be wrong if they don't have experience.
But it's about intent.
The whole idea behind the questionnaire, in my opinion, is measuring intent.

Q: Fast row-wise, parallel calculations on large, sparse matrix

Christian AdamI have a big (50k*150k) matrix with co-occurrences of nouns (rows) and adjectives (columns). As most nouns don't co-occurr with most adjectives, this matrix is very sparse, >99.9%, so I'm using the CSR format. For every pair of nouns I need to calculate the Jason-Shannon Divergence to asses how s...

I don't mean to stir anything up but a donation to my jeroen-supportive fund will go a long way towards my vote

@CaptainObvious VTC for Off-site code
@JeroenVannevel Are you running?

@Quill Yes, but afar from that it's a good question.

@JeroenVannevel In your case, I was thinking there should be some form of consideration for your absence
if you want to run, make it clear you are away, with spotty access.

Nah. I answer a question once every month and I edit a post once every 6 months
I'm not nearly active enough and many others are more passionate about it than I am

OK, just a thought ;-)

3:05 PM
@rolfl Problem avoided!
yet another situation solved by Jeroen

@JeroenVannevel and from what I remember, you star a message about four times a year.

@SimonAndréForsberg That seems about right
Though I starred a few messages the past 2 months
so I might have reached the end of page 2

You're #1 on page #2

@rolfl wrong page ranking

@Mat'sMug How you wish you hadn't said that jokingly: data.stackexchange.com/codereview/query/328490

3:08 PM
I meant this page:
But I'm only on Page 2?!
Didn't the entire first page get swag and stuff?

I think swag may be a thing of the past... not sure.

@Phrancis We're safe, there are only 89 FizzBuzz questions.

I'll take the person before me their spot anyway
to be sure

@Mast Do you like what I did though? ;)

@Mast if only lolcode had arrays!

3:12 PM
@rolfl Impressive amount of rep being required for first page these days.

@Mat'sMug Feel free to write your own compiler

@Phrancis Oh yes :)
@Mat'sMug Suggest it for next iteration. Perhaps it will turn out to be a real language some day...

3:38 PM
^^ that

Ahm.... Okay....

Q: Reversing a number in Ruby

Aaron BragerI'm writing a function to reverse a number in Ruby. IE, 314159.reverse should return 951413. Here's what I have, which works: class Numeric def reverse str = self.to_s.reverse if self.is_a?(Float) return str.to_f elsif self.is_a?(Integer) return str.to_i end end...

@Quill already busy enough with that VBA grammar...

@rolfl Did I miss something?

Stupid phone always making me misspell stuff

How on Earth do you misspell "lpl"?
cough

That's laughing out really loud

I remember last night when I said "faceplam".
maybe we should say "amotic faceplam" instead of "atomic facepalm"

Uh...

3:49 PM
Er...

When I do [tag: my phone wants to autocomplete with phpoop

My phone autocorrected "variables" to "gariables" the other night.

You gotta teach your phone dude

gets brutally and viciously attacked by phone

I haven't entirely figured out yet how the red/green tree solves the immutability problem but the performance remarks are really interesting

Q: Testing that a class with a lot of data is inserted into a repository

JakobI have a legacy system with a class with a lot of data. I am creating a web service that inserts a new claimant into that system for a contractor. I can not refactor the claimant object. I need help on how to refactor my tests. I would never leave this as is but I wanted you to have the raw code...

Bad pun in 3...
