Sweet, someone's been shooting zombies lately.
I shot a Python zombie about an hour ago.
Kind of a disputed post.
Still an okay answer though.
It's this one, if anyone is curious.

Nice answer, thanks for chiming in!

> The C.H.I.P teaches you to code
> C.H.I.P. comes pre-loaded with Scratch - an easy to learn language that teaches the basics of programing by making stories, games, and animations.

12:20 AM
It should come preloaded with Python, not scratch.

It comes loaded with Linux's terminal
You could install Python there

@EthanBierlein No. Scratch is for teaching young children how to program:

@nhgrif And, unfortunately, incompetent 15yr olds

Ah yes, but still.
@Quill Lel, totally.

So...
Being 15 and not knowing how to code makes you incompetent?

12:25 AM
No

Yeah, totally Nah

People need to know that programming is a useful, helpful, rewarding, ponyful skill.

Reminds me of that Lauren Ipsum book

12:40 AM
Shhhhh.....

Being 15 and not knowing how to code makes you one thing: age 15 not knowing how to code. Which is basically everyone.
Could be worse... you could be writing PHP

I did fibonacci when I was 15

When I was 15 (and younger, probably more like 13), I was toying around with IRC chatbots.

When I was 13 I had already accidentally fallen for the trick of rm -rf /.

LOL
(sorry, not making fun at you at all)

That is very okay.
It was just an SD card for my RPi.

I cleared my desktop once by mistake playing around with rm, safe to say I read the docs very carefully after that

I'm kinda close to Reversal here, and I've added a bit more to improve on it. And no, I'm still far from Copy Editor on MSE.
I did just remember that at -9, that question won't make it to the front page.

Anyone around with real-world QA knowledge?

1:05 AM
What does that mean?
These questions that lead into questions are usually confusing. Just ask?

Alright
I have a potential opportunity for getting into QA work, which I feel might be a good way to "get my foot in the door" in regards to IT work. Should I go for it?

This seems like a question for either CodeReview or… is there a computational physics StackExchange? Or does it just belong on Physics? I'm not sure. Read their help, especially on-topic; if it fits better there, you can flag your own question to ask a moderator to migrate it. — abarnert 48 secs ago

@Phrancis Potentially. It would depend. It can be a good foot in the door. It depends on the company and what they expect out of their testers.

TL;DR: Insurance company, Microsoft stack, requirements met except for college degree in related field

What's your long term career goal?

1:08 AM
I'd like to be a DBA or programmer, eventually

Can you paste the job description or link me to it?

It sounds like it has the potential to be a good opportunity
> Ability to write SQL statements preferred.
^ that means your job will actually entail actually writing SQL.
It kind of just depends on how big the company is and how closely you work with the developers there.

Seems like devs and QA are pretty close; friend of mine works there said QA team is 50+ and they can't keep up

If you work closely with developers, you show them your competence, express interest in programming, potentially help them rubber duck their problems, talk competently about programming when opportunities present themselves, then the developers might look to you next time they want/need a new hire.
With that all said, you should start learning/doing C#/VB.NET/ASP.NET if you're interested in moving into a programming job there

1:13 AM
I'm definitely considering that
Friend said some people in QA know SQL or some C#, many don't. Not sure what message that's supposed to convey

Knowing a programming language as a tester isn't that important. It's unlikely that you'll get much opportunity to look at source code.

But I feel pretty confident I could pick up on whatever technology was presented to me given some time to RTFM

Knowing SQL is a whole different story though. Knowing SQL lets you double check raw data and help narrow down the actual source of the problem you've found.
I only recommending learning programming languages as a means to help you move into a programming position (and out of QA)
and I am headed up to bed...
Oh, by the way, @Phrancis, you can always come work with me:

I found a C++ zombie with quite a bit of code. I won't bother to give it a full review, so anyone else can contribute to it.

If I knew C++ I'd help
@Jamal I think it looks like a lot of code because the OP put a blank space in between each line.

That's true, and I could comment on that. I just found one line that's especially ugly.

Which one?

The very last one.

@Jamal while().print()? Wat?
I don't understand how that makes sense.

A: HDD Based AVL Tree

JamalThis code appears to have a lot of excessive whitespace. I do understand that putting a space between parentheses is a type of style, but you also add blank lines in many unnecessary places. The biggest example are your function prototypes: node seedTree ( std::ifstream & input, std::fstream &...

And that was probably only scratching the surface.

@Jamal Still a good answer though :)

Thanks. :-) I normally don't like to delve into nit-picky stylistic things, but this seems to be different.

Hi Zalgo!

@Jamal Why no StringBuilder and single println?

2:03 AM
I don't like zombies being killed without a comprehensive review
Just because it now has an answer doesn't make the question answered

@JeroenVannevel At least it's on the right track to losing it's zombie status.

@rolfl I was only focusing on that part, and I'm not familiar enough with StringBuilder anyway.
@JeroenVannevel I also like to leave questions open for additional reviews from others. That means more rep for others and a slightly higher answer ratio.

The parameter arrays are all boxed, Random() is being instantiated in the method itself, there's no usage of Arrays.toString(), no StringBuilder(), bad naming of variables, etc

Then mention all of that and I'll upvote it.

@Jamal I suppose that's an understandable reason. I just think it's something we should look out for that the constant desire to answer older questions doesn't lower the quality of answers
Oh I wouldn't. I'm too lazy and I'm about to go to bed
but feel free to incorporate them

2:08 AM
On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend killing a zombie just with "don't use using namespace std. That person is better off just asking someone else familiar with C++ to provide an answer.

@Mat'sMug's got 99 problems but strings aint one

A: Replacing all occurrences in a String

Mat's Mug I know nothing of Scala, and my Regex knowledge is that of the .NET flavor, so please take this with a grain of salt. In my books, your regex produces only 1 match: {macro1}another_text{macro2} You're matching an opening brace and a closing brace, but in-between, anything goes, including...

that's a lot of problems for one regex!

So much better than "why the downvote?", too.

> Note the use of the "not a } inside the {}" logic in the regex.

@Mat'sMug s/greedy/reluctant/

why?
..tbh [^}] was my initial thought, but then I thought greedy would be simpler... isn't it?

greedy is the opposite of the ? operator
the ? ,makes the * not-greedy, but reluctant

whoopsie
fixed
Expresso just says "as few as possible"
I always thought that was what "greedy" stood for
although thinking again, doesn't make much sense

2:24 AM
See further down the page.
Laziness Instead of Greediness
then, even further:

hmm lazy sounds good

An alternative to laziness

the only thing that itches about that page is that it's ...parsing HTML

OH DEAR GOD

yeah... agreed. But, surprisingly, often HTML is more structured than you realize ;-)
certainly more structured than, say, code, or text, or poetry.

2:28 AM
truth

sure. but it's tutorials like this that make people try to parse HTML with regular expressions!

The pony will take them if they try.

and poetry is usually pretty structured
but I agree, parsing code with regex is... suicidal.

Regardless, it taught you something ;-)

yes
laziness costs

2:31 AM
and laziness is not greedy.

:)

I prefer reluctant, not lazy, because reluctant tells you more.

how so?
sounds like "I don't wanna" either way...

greedy means "get as much as you can"

yeah

2:33 AM
the opposite of greedy is not lazy - "do as little as possible".
"do as little as possible" could mean take more instead of filtering it more
reluctant is more of an opposite of greedy than lazy is.

"Greedy" actually sounds like a good thing, in some contexts

"Some contexts"

for some values of "a good thing"

In the context that extra information is superfluous, anyways

LMAO

3:23 AM
Wait, how do I do it with a WHERE clause though?

Done :p
@EthanBierlein
Context/code?

usually putting it in the WHERE clause does the trick

SELECT DisplayName, Reputation, Age, Location FROM Users WHERE
  Reputation     >= 200 AND
  Age            <= 18  AND
  LastAccessDate -- ??????????
ORDER BY Age DESC;

@EthanBierlein It should take an arbitrary date value fine... are you looking to calculate an interval?

where datediff(day, LastAccessDate, getdate()) < 30

3:25 AM
^^ that too

thank you

It's, well, on, syphilis.

It's not awful, the awful part is my project partners, as I said.

Q: Simple calculator in C V2

Daniel MorrisSo the last question I made had a lot of views (over a 1000) so I decided to apply what I learned from the previous question and revamp the program. I learnt a lot from posting that question (functions, how to do a menu without using using a lot of printf and learning to not repeat code etc). So ...

Honestly, we have to at least 25 slides for the presentation, and then on the last day of school, we have to present.
I swear, I'm just going to tell my teacher that my partners did nothing, and that they can get zero, even if they present.

I'm not sure why you would do that; I think they are entitled to fail on their own merits
(e.g., when you compete with them for a job)

Well, I can say that my health teacher is slightly oblivious to some things.

Well, to the teacher, it could be "just a job" so it's possible they couldn't care less

Heh. Sorta like my math teacher from last year. About 10% of the time she'd forget the answers to her own questions.

3:42 AM
To be fair (but not to justify it), people in general work jobs because they have bills to pay, not because they have some aspiration to making x better about the world.

True, but in the case of teachers, you'd expect them to have at least a little motivation to help educate and make things better.

I think the word "expect" is where that statement is wrong. I think "hope" or "wish" is more appropriate.

Hmm, yeah.
I did have a really good history teacher. He really seemed to enjoy his work quite a lot. His lessons were very interesting, and he just seemed to love what he did.

I had a great geography teacher back in high school
Hated the topic but loved the teacher

I had the exact opposite of that experience this year. Hated the teacher, but loved the class.
The only part of the class I didn't like was having to memorize all of the countries in the world.

3:47 AM
Ouch
But, there we go. We can be cynical all we want about school (and teachers), in the end it's really a whole lot like the rest of life is

I guess the lesson here is that lessons are important.

Thank you for this fascinating example of "how not to use stack overflow". Can I encourage you to click the 'stackexchange v' button at the top left of the page. There are several other sites in the SE family that are more likely to be able to help you with this -- code review in particular, but you probably want gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/graphicskfsone 7 secs ago
