Q: CD key String generator

Okay, I've been having this problem for about a month now and I thought I'd finally cave and post on Code Review. I've been able to make my game to select a random number on a button press 'btnCall' but my issue lies is checking the array

I must say that Django is interesting, but unfortunately interesting with its own quirks
Django offers you a way to manage user sessions, and it has an admin panel which you can use to interact with the database...
Now comes the surprise: Those user sessions are shared between your regular website and the admin panel :| :| :|
So last week we were testing something, logging in as a regular user on our site, then on the admin panel as admin user, and suddenly we were authenticated as an admin on our own site!
(If you create an admin user for the admin panel it can appareantly also log in on your own website as a regular user)

9:26 AM
@skiwi I found a way around user sessions

My server accepts credentials sent in the JSON query. Not nice, but works so awesomely well.
And since HTTPS encrypts the data anyway, it's safe-ish

@Mast eeek

For now using different browsers does work good enough
Eh, you cannot get around to sending user credentials unencrypted one time over the network, or can you?

9:32 AM
depends on the setup

@skiwi There's still a HTTPS session ofc, but no user session

if all the clients and the server are under your control, you can

@JeroenVannevel How?

just implement your encrypting/decrypting protocol both clientside and serverside

@JeroenVannevel It's all in-house, so yea

9:32 AM
encrypt at client, send, decrypt at server
but that would fail if you have external clients

@skiwi you can... good old key exchange for HTTPS Session
It's called Diffie-Hellman
Diffie–Hellman key exchange (D–H) is a specific method of securely exchanging cryptographic keys over a public channel and was one of the first public-key protocols as originally conceptualized by Ralph Merkle. D–H is one of the earliest practical examples of public key exchange implemented within the field of cryptography. The Diffie–Hellman key exchange method allows two parties that have no prior knowledge of each other to jointly establish a shared secret key over an insecure channel. This key can then be used to encrypt subsequent communications using a symmetric key cipher. The scheme was...

Coffee and croissants this morning. I love when my starts like that.

@JeroenVannevel What exactly is an external client?
@Morwenn I love when my starts with missing words.

@skiwi a client you cannot control

@skiwi * day ç_____ç

9:39 AM
@Vogel612 What's a good example of that?

you
for SE you are an external client
you come from outside their network

Ah...
I get it now

and you don't use a customized program for communication
As soon as you can control the communication in one way or the other, the client becomes an internal client

I've also learned my lesson to never call API responses status, but instead call them authenticated or registered or whatever is applicable

ya ummmm.. what about.. response?

9:42 AM
So to make authentication simple, only authorise clients you wrote yourself.

monking

Hey :)

We even had this.status.status :D

@skiwi That's the point you should think about refactoring

The problem was that we were close to a deadline and that we absolutely could not afford to create bugs or have additional merge conflicts

9:52 AM
I know that feeling.

But since the sprint ended Friday afternoon, now in the weekend we have time to fix those things and then tomorrow everyone can pull those refactorings into their branch and everything is fine again :D

That's the part I hate about my job.
Not having room for improvements.

I'm hoping that once I start working full-time and there's say 3 week sprints, that you have one or two days scheduled in between
Does anyone know if with GitLab if you remove branches, you then also lose them from your Network graph?

probably, yes
since nothing points there anymore
I'd find it strange if they weren't lost.

You then only can rely on the history or the actual merge commit messages?
I don't know if I want to lose them (was going to clean up branches), because that graph is so pretty

10:02 AM
Hello all
Monking @all

Well.. whatever you think of as pretty
hey @CodeX

monking @CodeX

@skiwi well somewhat
you can infer the branch location by identifiying the respective parents of the merge-commit

@Vogel612 I think Github retains them in the overview

and you can label them if you use the auto-comment
no it doesn't

10:03 AM
@skiwi designing an underground tube system?

when you delete a branch it's gone

The branch with which I just tested was exactly on the same location as our develop branch (I had just fast-forward merged them), so naturally the tag of the branch disappeared
For fast forwards it's okay if they disappear... for merged ones, I hope not
@Vogel612 I think you're correct, if you look at github.com/Cardshifter/Cardshifter/network you see that in the beginning most names are gone, but structure is still present

What are you building@?

Top secret for university ;)

Ah ok
I'm so bored, i cannot think of a single thing to do
Does anyone have any ideas for me?

10:14 AM
@skiwi most probably not

Maybe some motivational words

@janos That would be a bummer
@Vogel612 Confirmed now that it works the same as GitHub, it keeps the merge structure

Call me paranoid, but I'm deleting branches right now in a 8-man project, I need to be a bit careful :P

this doesn't surprise me
@skiwi meh, if the branches are merged you should be fine

10:15 AM
@rolfl Ok, im on it!

@Vogel612 Yeah, that's what I'm thinking

@skiwi just check: git log --oneline --graph --decorate --all

As the majority of us were new with Git we decided to not delete branches yet as it would only confuse them more

ya right because the output of git branch shouldn't be as clean as possible..
~cough
It's just like cleaning up your code.
Don't leave old junk lying about
remove old branches, run git gc....

So... why on earth is there one branch here that's 2 weeks old that hasn't been merged with anything at all?!

10:17 AM
I have months-old branches sometimes.
Working on one of them to merge it.

good question... for whoever last committed in that branch... or whoever has that in a pending merge request

This is off topic here. post it along with your solution on Code reviewZohar Peled 43 secs ago

@skiwi just git show it and make whoever's the author explain to you

@Vogel612 Yeah, I'll be sure to track that one down
@janos Yep ;)
If most of us have their push strategy set to push all branches they have, will they then push their own branches again if they didn't remove them locally?
Or does git fetch/pull (all branches) prevent that somehow?

@skiwi yes they will

10:24 AM
yup

make them use git config --global push.default simple
or upstream
then they can just git push

^^^ good idea

also you can make them use git fetch remote -p to remove local branches that are deleted remotely

@Vogel612 is it simple or upstream?

both work, simple rejects pushes to differently named upstream though

10:26 AM
I think simple is the most simple.

Following @ZoharPeled suggestion I'm moving the query to code review — Simone 5 secs ago

yes. especially when you don't have different names remote vs local it's nice
but I had to use git to link SVN branches together in a local environment...

@Vogel612 good stuff. Taking notes now...

well for upstream you have to establish the upstream first
and it will be changed if you pull from a specific remote branch
interestingly it won't be changed if you fetch and merge FETCH_HEAD

And I thought the basics were complicated, this is deep.

What you are trying to build is called an Interval tree ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_tree ) -an ordered tree data structure to hold intervals. Specifically, it allows one to efficiently find all intervals that overlap with any given interval or point. The wikipedia page has several examples and a 'Searching for all overlapping intervals' solution. A: Ultimate FizzBuzz

Martin RYour code looks good to me, and I have only some minor remarks and suggestions. An Optional has an implicit initial value of nil, so var retnValue: String? = nil can be simplified to var retnValue: String? In func generate() -> GeneratorOf<String> { var value: Int = self.startValue ...

From sicp text, I am going thru this topic 2.2.3 Sequences as Conventional Interfaces

Hang on, let me buckle in.
2
Okay, go.

I learnt that: The value of expressing programs as sequence operations is that this helps us make program designs that are modular, that is, designs that are constructed by combining relatively independent pieces. We can encourage modular design by providing a library of standard components together with a conventional interface for connecting the components in flexible ways.
Do we have any good example in python that can illustrate this?

I love numpy.

this is a powerful statement: In section 1.3 we saw how program abstractions, implemented as higher-order procedures, can capture common patterns in programs that deal with numerical data. Our ability to formulate analogous operations for working with compound data depends crucially on the style in which we manipulate our data structures.

A: Computed properties vs methods with shape classes

nhgrifWhat is ShapeSC? What is ShapeP? Why are we abbreviating things that cause me to ask questions and don't save you any time whatsoever? What does the SC stand for? What does the P stand for? Can't we just write Shape and ShapeProtocol? Please don't use π as a variable name. Yes, it's cool...

@rolfl So, How do I visualise, that list data model allows writing generic operations?
I guess numpy is implemented on same lines

@rolfl That I have many mirrors?

I mean why sequences as conventional interfaces? what are the special properties in list that make us think to make as conventional interface?

I hate filling out all this paperwork. Noncompete, intellectual property, etc.

huh...
I know it has to be in there... but I'm not sure how that would happen (and be work-related)

@nhgrif Electrocuting yourself while repairing your work laptop? Dunno.

@nhgrif Maybe the job is so boring you fall out of your chair and then drop three floors?
Regarding my study: I still don't see the point to spend time learning something I don't even want to learn.
There's so many better things my braincells could be doing

Ritchie Shatterstd::cout (explicitly) using std::cout (using declaration) using namespace std (using directive) I was recently pointed to this answer about namespaces. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1452721/why-is-using-namespace-std-considered-bad-practice From the answers given I can see why the using ...

How do we feel about that question...
