Q: Conditional string building in Ruby

Leon StaffordI can see a possible performance optimization with declaring 2 arrays and iterating the $fake_widgets only once, but how else can I make the following conditional string building more elegant in Ruby? pending_coloring = $fake_widgets.select do |widget| widget[:status] == 'awaiting_coloring' &&...

@Vogel612 Not at all. He posted his, so I figured I'd post mine.

I also don't like the proposed change for the if statement
And the critique for the empty switch case seems obiviate to the IMO obvious reasons for haning that no-op case there...

That being said I really need a night's sleep, but I'd love to see some more clean reasoning and possibly a little more in depth on that review...

Q: Can this Android SVG path be simplified?

Tom HartI've created my first Android drawable, a hourglass shaped image, and I'm curious what can be improved with it. It seems weird having to use 4 paths, but I couldn't get it to work any other way. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <vector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/andr...

@Mat'sMug Are you around Albany or somewhere around there?

I wonder why it's called @Hyatt_WiFi and not just Hyatt_WiFi

@Mat'sMug Ahh, I've driven through there a few times
Albany is over to the east, past Syracuse
You're almost in Pennsylvania

ah, yeah.. we drove past Syracuse on the way here

pretty much haha

You must be there for business, I don't know anyone who would go around there for leisure :)

What's the 'forget there ever was a repository and start all over again' command for git again?

git nuke -f

1:52 AM
rm -rf .git; git init

@Mat'sMug I'm this close to re-installing the server because that's probably quicker.
@JulianFondren Thanks!
Can't believe it was that simple and right under my nose...

there are complications though (of course)

When aren't there?

like, you type Private Sub

Try checking for reserved keywords out of that list you have.

I could try that

That would be obvious though.

Yes, you should.

@Jamal less than that ;-)

What did you think was going to happen?

Hosch still had the ability to VTC when Mat's was already being processed. For some reason, those after the final VTC don't get dropped in that case.

I'm calling that a bug
but I'm not reporting it

2:50 AM
Ugh, concurrency bugs.

yeah, got one right here

@Mat'sMug Maybe nicael will do so. :P

That key hook will read every key press in the system. You need to verify the active window is the VBE.

yeah yeah
done
            var windowHandle = GetForegroundWindow();
            var vbeWindow = _vbe.MainWindow.HWnd;

            if (windowHandle != (IntPtr)vbeWindow || nCode < 0 || wParam != (IntPtr)WM_KEYDOWN)

lol
thx mug

Working now?

well it's picking up keypresses as long as the _vbe.MainWindow is active
which means the immediate pane is picking up keypresses
not ideal, but we're within the VBE
so, better.

2:59 AM
Wait, I thought you were going to check for the active window?
_vbe.ActiveWindow.HWnd, or something.

hmm
then I also need to check to see if it's a code pane window
but the main problem is that the listener seems deaf
crap
none of the listeners are listening

Why would they call them listeners then?
(rhetorical question)

nah, they are
something's not working though
(duh)
so yeah, Rubberduck 2.0 will be everything we ever dreamed of @Hosch250... if the parser ends up yielding Declaration instances :)

Besides the mentioned direct problem, you have a couple of dangerous conditions lurking in your code. Take a look again - what happens if you put in a negative amount? Try if you feel daring. The reason the compiler was complaining about "static can't access non-static variables" is because the professor probably expects you to create a Purchase object (read the problem statement again!), and modify the values in that (eg, via completedPurchase.tax = .2). Generally speaking, mutable static variables should be avoided. After you get this working, go over to Code Review for more. — Clockwork-Muse 8 secs ago

The bug may be somewhere outside of the code you presented. Can you provide a minimal working example? Try to reduce it to a code that would be as short as possible. Chances are that when you try to reduce it, the bug will fix itself, giving you a hint where to look for it. SO is not a code review site. — CygnusX1 47 secs ago

I'm fixing up our app to use stuff like Webpack, instead of relying on implicit ordering + concat in Visual Studio
One of the things webpack shows you is how large each 'chunk' (each separate file from the output) will be
I've grouped all of the vendor libraries into a single chunk, which totals 3.38MB.
and over half of that is a single library, kendo.web.min, which is 1.64MB.
3.38MB download in a web app... :\
[25] ./Scripts/kendo/kendo.web.min.js 1.64 MB {1} [built]
how do you write a library that is 1.64mb in javascript?? how??

8:56 AM
@DanPantry mhh I should ask that question to kendo :)

@chillworld I can't wait to gut kendo out of this project..
it requires jquery which is another ~140kb and it is bodged to even work with Angular in the first place

well, I don't come into contact with javascript much because we use ZK

when I first learned Python, it didn't even have "+=" operators because Guido thought that was unreadable (or maybe a way too many to modify variables). it's come a long way :p

Oh wow, bizarre.
There's still funniness with it though.
lista = lista + listb is different to lista += listb.

Depends on how it is implemented

(one modifies in place, the other does not)

in some languages, += is not atomic and just resolves to doing exactly what you just listed :)

Yeah... in Python it's a different method.

10:04 AM
and nowadays Python has list comprehensions, generators, decorators. so there's no need to worry about += confusing anybody.

Yeah that's true. I never really use list concatenation unless I'm fiddling around in the interpreter and doing lots of other terrible stuff.

don't forget slices

(subres/10)|0 is the other way to do that

Another thing I haven't seen before

yep. and ~ is bitwise negation

bitwise operators used to force double floats to act like 32bit ints

Though apparently, jslint will complain if you use ~~
today I learned
so, silly question, whats the difference between Math.abs and Math.trunc
Bear in mind I didn't get to study integrals

Math.abs(-5) => 5; Math.trunc(-5) => -5
were you thinking of some other function?

No, I was thinking of those. Just didnt' think of negative numbers
The wording of math.trunc is that it returns the integral of the fraction - I have no idea what integrals are
but math.abs will return the absolute value of the fraction

Q: View Model Constructor Arguments

Nick SpicerI have created a ViewModel for a Product Edit page because it has specific related entities I need to load - the class currently looks like this: public class ProductEditView { public ProductEditView(Product product) { this.ID = product.ID; this.Code = product.Code; ...

10:25 AM
it just means the non-fractional part, by 'integral'. Math.abs just removes the sign, so to speak. It leaves the fractional part. Math.abs(5.5) => 5.5

Alright, thanks :)
the wikipedia article on integrals just turned my brain to goo. nvm

ya, that's calculus for you. Math.trunc()'s got nothing to do with that though.
