I'll make sure to do a clean build

is it the same error?

java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.ClassCastException: cannot assign instance of com.skiwi.tessutils4j.data.Word$SerializationProxy to field com.skiwi.tessutils4j.data.Symbol$SerializationProxy.parentWord of type com.skiwi.tessutils4j.data.Word in instance of com.skiwi.tessutils4j.data.Symbol$SerializationProxy
It looks similar right?

@Mat'sMug Honestly, I didn't expect that answer of mine to gain that many upvotes.

Do I also need to set transient parentWord even if using Serialization proxy?

One downvote won't kill me.

2:01 PM
those nested if statements are so Redundant. I wish I had time to look over it better and give a better review

if you have the SerializationProxy, and the parentWord is not declared as a field on the Proxy, then there should not even be a parentWord to fail on.

But I forgot to remove it...
Might matter

My answer on SO said not to have the parentWord at all on the SO proxy.
Damn, if you are goin to ask a question, you should probably read the answer ;-)

But I did!
But I overlooked those lines...

Ahhh .... OK then ;-)

2:04 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I have 16 votes spent today... that leaves 24 downvotes I can spend on your answers if you want :)

I can help with that ;-)

Huh, my testfiles simply disappeared.

When chaining operations, the second op must be applied to the result of the first. Duh.

lol

@skiwi Bad time

2:06 PM
@skiwi You can't blame that on me.

@Mat'sMug do you have time to finish this off? codereview.stackexchange.com/q/52428/18427

@Mat'sMug I'm not sure how that will help, but thanks anyway, I guess...

@rolfl I can blame it on myself.

That's probably because you are using maven, and maven was trying to help

Actually they went to the rejected folder :)

2:07 PM
ohhhhhhhhh I didn't know that markdown existed. Thanks @Jamal

Symbol count: 747 Yay it works now :)
I don't need JDOM currently anymore though :o

@Malachi favorited, will look at later :)

First process was: File -> Tesseract -> create hOCR xml file -> read in XML file -> convert to object representation
Now I directly interact with the Tesseract API to create the object representation

@skiwi I am always a fan of efficiency. Don't stress these things.

hOCR didn't give enough output, so it pretty much ended there

2:11 PM
I am surprised you had to go through serialization though.... what are you communicating through?

@ckuhn203 wait till you discover \$mathjax\$ :)

That's what he discovered.

@rolfl A filesystem, my program consists of different stages, hence the object needs to be reread at every stage if it's needed there

oh ... but markdown != mathjax :)

2:12 PM
OK, that's .... ugly, but OK.

Possibly in the future different stages will run on different physical servers
It's IMO better as doing everything in a single program

OK, I'm not doubting you too much.

And... other users might want serialization :)

I may be picking your brains on using tesseract at some point.

Should I switch to Watson OCR then? ;-)

2:14 PM
@rolfl better?

Q: How to use Decorator Pattern

TheTruthIsInCodeIs this a good usage of Decorator pattern? I'm trying to use Interfaces instead of Abstract classes. (Component) Interface public interface IBake { string Name { get; } double Price { get; } } (Concrete Component) public class BakeBase : IBake { private s...

@CaptainObvious mine!

lulz. Yup. That's sweet.

(nevermind, busy)

But in all seriousness @rolfl, you cannot interact with the Tesseract C API nicely from Java... Hence it needs a wrapper library pretty much

2:16 PM
That is what I heard..... and I also heard the interaction/scriptability is awful... ;-)
It's really 'old' code, and uses 'old-style' mechanisms.
That's what I heard, anyway.

It's the only known one that does the job correct though

@ckuhn203 I'm pretty sure there's a correct representation for y-1, seeing y on the right side of f(x) = ... is kinda awkward. But I don't know what that notation might be.

You know what's more fun
The API exposes a PageIterator, but it doesn't iterate over pages.
Instead it iterates over the block, paragraph, textline, word and symbol

> I'm getting the following, which is not the right total:

All in one iterator

2:18 PM
@Jamal oh, missed that

little off that implementation of decorator
he can't decorate with cream and cherry

Hence I'm using a really ewird process for iteration...

@Mat'sMug And the OP seems to forget the language tag each time.

@chillworld the decorator doesn't implement the decorated interface... it's kind of a point right there :)

People tend to upvote factoids as a sign that they too, knew about this clever trick. This is exactly my objection to them - it's rep-whoring. — jwg 15 mins ago
That guy really doesn't know the spirit of Code Review...

2:22 PM
My iteration process:
- Iterate over the symbols
- Check if a symbol is the first element of a block/paragraph/textline/word, if so, add to a map that maps from the symbol number to that element in builder form
- Then add children of every element by looking up in the map, problem is that the map contains a mapping from parent builder to children builders
- Then from bottom to top, build the elements, store a mapping of the builders and the built elements
- When going up, you use the other map to look up the children of the builder, and then the other mapping to get the built values, such t
All this because there is no easier way...

@SimonAndréForsberg And... mod intervention time....
@jwg - got a second to chat about voting patterns?

hehe first c# answer

A: Usage of Decorator pattern in baking program

chillworldAs I'm a more java programmer than C# but I try to answer you as good as I can. The decorater pattern should be able to decorate multiple times. Example : I must be able to decorate with cream and cherry and cream again. In your implementation you can only decorate once. Your decoration class ...

All this, because someone decided to invent a multi-level iterator that doesn't iterate over the elements it claims to be iterating over.

IteratorIterable<T>, what?

2:26 PM
@chillworld upvoted... and I posted one, too :)

(sorry for the quad-ping)

@rolfl But here you only walk the descendants, correct? That's exactly what I would need in Tesseract
Instead it does something very weird
when calling the next() method, you there need to specify the level of iteration you want

I think it's f(x)' (f of x prime)

A: Can someone explain how to convert VB code to Java with JACOB?

Yousef'sTo clear things for you, can you convert milk into meat? the same answer apply to programming, You can NOT convert Java into VB to JAVA or any language to another.

VB to trashcan

@rolfl I had a feeling you would put your head on and bring the vacuum cleaner. Thanks, mod-monkey.

forgot the ping. I think it's f(x)' @Mat'sMug

Yay, from a teacher of mine:
"A special thanks to you for the detailed comments and advice!"

2:32 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Well, it takes two people to engage in a debate in comments, when the debate blongs in chat, or meta.

I pretty much explained that and why his course sucked and how he should fix it.

hint hint

@rolfl Yeah, I probably shouldn't have replied to the first comment at all.

Pleased you said that ... it saves me from having to. ;-) I understand why though, and I am guilty of doing that sort of thing as well.

I didn't know this was a thing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JIT_spraying

2:37 PM
@rolfl That's how we learn, isn't it? :)

Next thing you know you have a very popular meta question detailing everything you did wrong ;-)

@Mat'sMug: I think your answer to the baking program was just invalidated.

Monking Jamal.

Monking! I wanted to sleep past 7, but I didn't have the time with me...

Now we are talking about learning anyway... Shouldn't things like a programmer compettency matrix be more focused on debugging as well?

Hey @jwg - just you were asking questions about voting strategies, and comments on answers are not the right place.
This, or meta would be more appropriate.
I deleted the comments on the answer since they were off-topic there.

jwg
I don't understand what you mean. I don't think I asked any questions..

True, it wasn't a question that you asked, it was:
> People tend to upvote factoids as a sign that they too, knew about this clever trick. This is exactly my objection to them - it's rep-whoring

2:52 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Did you know that JavaFX and running it as a website (does require the server to run JavaFX and is still in very early phase), you can run a browser inside the browser inside your browser?

jwg
So you are objecting to that because it is off-topic on the answer's comments?

I think there's two things. The first is to get it out of the comments.....

jwg
...

I think the discussion about the voting and your objections is a separate discussion.
Which I am happy to engage in either here, or on meta.

jwg
Well, it was in response to the asker who said, not in so many words - 14 people voted this answer up, therefore it is useful.

Q: Implementing range() in JavaScript

LukeFor fun, I implemented a version of Python's range function in JavaScript. I found that underscore.js implements it as well, but with notable differences. I'm hoping others can comment on the differences. I assume that underscore's implementation is, if not more optimal, at least more idiomatic. ...

jwg
I also think you should reinstate the first comment, which was an explanation to my downvote. It was a perfectly legitimate comment which had nothing to do with 'voting patterns'.

I am checking it out now.

Nice comment there :P

@skiwi Had to :-)

2:58 PM
@jwg OK, I understand where you're coming from. Simon's answer does not 'review' the OP's code, and all it does is show a different way to do things.

jwg
Yes, it seems like he doesn't really know the spirit of Code Review...

I somewhat agree with that assessment, but also disagree in part with your conclusions.
For a start, it's not that black/white.
In real code reviews I have had it said to me.... you're doing it wrong, this is a better way.

jwg
Whether or not you agree is neither here nor there. Presumably I am allowed to post a comment with which you disagree, without it being removed.

No, that's not true.
People have this thing about comments, and what's 'right' and censorship, etc.
comments are ephemeral. They get removed all the time.
getting upset about them going is pointless, and counterproductive.
If you have something important to contribute, then add it as an answer, and run the vote-cyycle through. If people upvote your answer, then it bubbles to the top.

jwg
I am not getting upset. You asked me to talk to you about 'voting patterns'.
I;m not really sure where you are going with this.

3:03 PM
Well, you used the term 'rep-whore' which is a trigger.

jwg
Ok, and I pointed out that the original comment should stand. If you really aren't going to put it back, I think you are wrong not to do so.

Well, I am trying to figure out what your base concern is.
I did put your comment back.... but I am also going through all the comments now on that whole question, and planning a big purge.

jwg
I don't have a 'base concern'. I am talking to you about this because you asked me too. You haven't made it clear what your 'base concern' is.
Well, have fun.

I thought I did. I said I did not want you talking about voting patterns and other non-topic issues in comments. I have satisfied my base concerns. We are now debating the issue in an appropriate place.

jwg
What issue?

3:06 PM
Apparently there isn't one. Which suits me fine.

@jwg I think voting patterns can make a very constructive and helpful discussion on the meta site. Defining what's rep-whoring in the context of Code Review would be helpful, too; OTOH this site had very serious voting issues in the past, and the site still has way too few voters...
ugh too late, gone
@rolfl or could we be abusing the vacuum cleaner?

3:22 PM
@skiwi That sounds promising, if it can behave just as smoothly as GWT, letting anyone play it in the browser, then I think there's a fair chance that I'll be using it a bit. I'll see if I can get started with it in Eclipse now.

@Mat'sMug No his comment was in my opinion provocative. If he want to discuss what is rep-whoring and if the answer is indeed an answer, this is for the meta not comments. He can state why he is downvoting but no more. And for the sake of it, it's a comment... it's really really not important !

@SimonAndréForsberg There's one issue though... It requires a backend server to still run the JAR on
So it isn't as good as GWT, not even close
But it can (with that beta thingie) really behave like a website
I think it's like using Java webservices, etc. but then better :)

@skiwi A backend server isn't that hard. GWT is often used together with a backend server, but luckily I only use the client parts of GWT.

3:37 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Jetty is pretty lightweight. I run it all the time when doing development.

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah well then it might be possible... You need some sort of (part of) dedicated server though

@jwg - I have deleted your comment again. In my assessment it is out of place, and seems targeted at just one user. Every single answer on that question does the same thing, so I can't see why one answer should be burdened with a debate on it's on-topicness. I have cleaned up something like 39 comments on that question. This is what happens when a question goes hot.

Though my bet would be on the SQL side.
Making assumptions is a good way to overlook the actual cause of errors. (speaking with first-hand knowledge)

about the cake question, it produces the wrong output because of the bad decorator implementation; OP's question being "Is this a good usage of Decorator pattern?", I find it hard to cast a close vote (and that has nothing to do with my answer)...

Welcome to Code Review! This seems somewhat relevant ;) ...You've come to the best possible place to get a peer review and to get that code improved. However as it stands it's not clear whether you're asking for help fixing the bug/glitch (which is off-topic on this site), or for a peer review of the working code (which is on-topic on this site). Well... No error reporting anywhere for internal errors?
Did you check yet if you can run my JavaFX jar on my github repo?

@skiwi You didn't read the (no stacktrace!) part, did you?
@skiwi I'm trying that now

@SimonAndréForsberg is that running in debug mode from the IDE or it's running deployed outside the debugger?
in .net you can include a .pdb so that runtime exceptions include a stack trace (complete with lines of code and all) even in a production environment if you want.

@Mat'sMug From the IDE

4:40 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg It doesn't recognize your command ^^

then all I can say is... WTF.

Ah you have a synchronized git repo, interesting ;)

@skiwi All programs ought to recognize the "WTF"-command.

How hard was it to get it working?
Did Eclipse recognize the Maven pom?

I have a synchronized git repo?
Yes, I just imported the POM, and then Eclipse created a project from that.

4:42 PM
LOL
I've never tested that ;)
The only thing I know is that Travis is happy with that POM
Did you or did you not hook that project on my project repo's downstream?
And why wouldn't yours work with JavaFX... Can you choose a JavaFX project in Eclipse?

I used the download ZIP button on GitHub

Ah ok, then you cannot get it synchronized :P

@Mat'sMug For the bottom picture, that should be "I have no idea why, but that's ok."

I downloaded the e(fx)clipse plugin to be able to choose a JavaFX project

Hmm....First decorator runs but....I'm getting a StackOverflowException on Second Decorator... — TheTruthIsInCode 12 mins ago

But your code runs @skiwi without technically being a JavaFX project. Which confuses me.

@SimonAndréForsberg Do you know if jfxrt.jar is on the classpath? I better hope Eclipse puts it automatically

How does a decorator end up throwing a StackOverflowException? I want to see OP's stack trace...

@SimonAndréForsberg Well I used a maven plugin to build the jar, maybe Eclipse executes that? I don't know, it might totally avoid Eclipse's build process
@Mat'sMug Circularator?

@SimonAndréForsberg TestFx is the testing framework for automated GUI testing
It should work btw as this same POM is used on Travis... So I would be interested if it doesn't work

@skiwi AFAIK jfxrt.jar is in the shared Java 8 SDK path

@skiwi indeed!

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah true, I've read too many bug reports about things not working in JavaFX 2.2 and below...
Because surprise surprise, in Java 7 it was not by default included in the path

4:51 PM
@Mat'sMug nice :)
I'm going to propose a very crazy thing here... Wanting to see if it makes any sense
In Java you can use public synchronized void method() and public synchronized <T> T method() (void and return type)

@skiwi To get started with JavaFX, did you download a Java FX SDK or something?

This essentially wraps code in a synchronized block
@SimonAndréForsberg Nope, full JDK 8 is all I did
Would it make sense to instead of synchronized be able to specify an arbitrary method? (In case of void method you would need to specify a Runnable)
I'm asking because in JavaFX it is common to need to wrap all code in a Platform.runLater() method
Like:
private void println() {
    Platform.runLater(() -> textArea.appendText(System.lineSeparator()));
}
Wouldn't a syntax like this be more clear?
private Platform::runLater void println() {
    textArea.appendText(System.lineSeperator());
}
Or am I slowly becoming crazy?

I think you're either becoming crazy or becoming lazy.
2
to me, Platform.runLater(() -> textArea.appendText(System.lineSeparator())); is much more clear.

Then I might just be becoming crazy ;)

@skiwi One method for you:
private System.out::println void helloWorld() {
    "No, it doesn't make sense."
}

4:57 PM
That requires a bunch of thinking to start off with...

Am I the only one with a reminder in Outlook that says "Lunch time!"?

you still need to do return though :P

@skiwi No I don't. You didn't have to, why should I have to?

Because I had a void, you have one with returntype

@skiwi So you claim that for a IntSupplier I'd need to do () -> return 5 ? Because yours was () -> someVoidMethod()
@skiwi My point is: It is confusing, it's unclear, it's not something I'd want to see happen.

5:02 PM
I was mainly looking for a counter example which I couldn't make
the one with System.out::println seems to be counterintuitive enough

Seem like reasonable tags to me @Mat'sMug.

5:24 PM
@skiwi In my opinion, your handleTextFieldOnKeyReleased should, instead of adding the message to a queue, perform the action that was specified for the current player. i.e. call game.play(actionThatWasEntered);, and the play method checks what game.getCurrentPlayer() is and performs that action for that player.

@ckuhn203 also if/when you get a gold tag badge, you also get a close-vote hammer for questions along with it.

I don't see that happening @Mat'sMug. There's only a handful of questions on the site.
53
So there is exactly 1/4 the number of questions needed to earn a gold badge on the entire stie.

So, ask a bunch of questions, and self-answer them.
Badges of the gold variety need to be earned

it's not even eligible for tag badges yet. I think it needs another 47 questions asked.

If it wasn't for that nasty little "you had to write it" problem @rofl.

I pushed a lot of tag-cleaning through a month or so ago....
Lots, and lots of editing....
to make sure questions that were about android, were tagged android.

I'd scrape SO for solved problems in their vba tag. It's a god awful mess.

recursive questions were tagged....., etc.

That's good though. A site needs that.

And, with some directed edits, there were suddenly enough correctly tagged questions for a bunch of people to be awarded generalist.

Really? Nice.

Yeah, in essence, generalists on Code Review had more than enough questions answered to get the badges, but the questions were badly tagged.
I am not ashamed to say that I asked a question, to earn a hat.

Q: Should we sign up for Winter Bash 2013?

tintinmjIs Winter Bash happening in Code Review? Many beta sites are going to participate in Winter Bash (AV.SE and Movies.SE site's moderators are receiving email from Stack Exchange). Have any of CR's moderators received such email? In my opinion, participating in such events may help us graduate. ...

I want to start asking for code reviews on this crap language I use and then start posting answers to them so I can finally fix this bs.
JUST LET ME FIX IT

Q: jquery dialog multiple instantiations

SabeI have a site where there are lots of "jobs" that a user creates. The user has the option to "Close" any given job. I want a pop up warning dialog whenever the user clicks the "Close" button, and verify that they actually want to close the job. There are many ways to do this, and I've implement...

@Mat'sMug I must confess you something, I miss Visual Studio and .Net. (I'm working with Swing atm and omg it's horrible). But I never told you this so shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!

@Marc-Andre If you're not implementing subroutines with GOTO:s just because your language has no concept of a subroutine, be thankful.

Thank you @200_success
Good edit.

Q: Java threads, synchronized and volatile

user3708033It's my first time working with threads in Java, and I was wondering if I'm synchronizing correctly. I did some quick research on locks, synchronized and volatile, but I'm still not sure where/how to use them. Basically I have a thread that executes some process, and I can cancel it from an outsi...

@SimonAndréForsberg That would also be an option surely

5:58 PM
@Marc-Andre Use GWT / JavaFX instead :)
@skiwi Pure .fx

@SimonAndréForsberg If I would have a choice sure, but it's some new feature on an existing application

@Marc-Andre Switch to JavaFX 8, it's worth it :) Preferably together with Java 8 though
@SimonAndréForsberg Have never heard about that
