12:04 AM
I can imagine
Or actually, I don't think I can...

I worked as an election monitor in 1994, and monitored the counting of the votes.

@rolfl You didn't answer the note about Minesweeper though. Do you know much about calculating Minesweeper probabilities?

No, but I have some ideas....
do yoi know the remaining number of mines>?

@rolfl Yes, I know the exact remaining number of mines

hi!

12:07 AM
OK, so, you know the exact number of mines, then you work some increasingly strategic systems to eliminate possible mine positions.
You take the overall probaility of any square being a mine....

@rolfl The reason why I'm asking is that I'll probably post my code for review soon. I'd like to improve the performance of it, if possible. It's purpose is to calculate the exact (double precision) mine-probabilities of the entire board.

then, each time you eliminate a possiblity, you redistribute that square's probability to others....

Hey @Mat'sMug.

if you get an exact 50/50 or some sort, then you can use that too.
each time you adjust a cell, you need to rebalance the un-specified ones.

@rolfl Or, instead of re-distributing a square's probability, one can just re-calculate the entire thing from scratch (that's what I currently do)

12:10 AM
I would have a collection of unknown cells, and a general probability that applies to them all.
then, iterate the cells, if you can say something about that cell, take it out the general pool, and handle it specifically.
when you have run out of things you can say specific things about, the general pool gets the general probability.
each time you can say something specific, you take from, or add to the general probability
It is a zero-sum problem.

ooh the pretty colors!

@rolfl So with the case above, you would iterate each cell? Or which cells?

of course, I can tell when you're designing UI, doesn't look like that ;p

Case above, how many mines?

12:14 AM
@rolfl 5 mines in the entire board

in any case you would start with the adjacent cells in row 3, no?

so, 20 cells, 2-known to not-be mines, leaving 18 cells for 5 mines, so probabilities are 5/18
for all cells.

@rolfl How do you count to 16 ?

I counted 4 x 4 ;-)
OK, 4 x 5 now.... fixing.
I don't believe you can analyze that any more....

I think I'd just stab at D1 (or A5) and see what I'd get.
(boom)

12:17 AM
Actually, let me think a bit more.
you can analyze it a bit.

@rolfl So if you would write an algorithm to analyze the mine probabilities of that board, you'd return something like Math.random() ?

@rolfl That's the spirit

@SimonAndréForsberg No.
There is no need for Random... I would fail that in a review.

@Mat'sMug But 4 is not a probability. (Although apparently, -0.14 is... at least according to the Minesweeper application I tried yesterday...)

12:19 AM
wow.. would Math.random() really do worse than that?

OK, more analysis..... assuming a random distribution of the remaining 5 mines, there are two cells which are common to both the '2' values.
each of those two cells has a 5/18 chance of being a mine... so, there's a 10/18 chance that one of them is.....

@syb0rg I saw that.... I am going to have to answer some more questions....maybe even write some more KTurtle code

which means there's a 10/18 chance that only one of the cells in the other 2-bounded cells are mines.... and, you would have to adjust for that

@Malachi I may have to try out Apple's new programming language, see what I can reap in reputation there.

That would be ..... puts on glasses .... swift
3

12:21 AM
@rolfl So if you would have four cells, each having 5/18 chance of being a mine, there'd be 20/18 chance that one of them is?

new programming language? they get tired of objective C?

Apparently. It's going to be outed with Swift-ness

what does that mean? I am a little slow sometimes....

Apple still supports ObjC for now, but they will soon be less focused on it. I imagine the only support they would have for it would be legacy stuff in the future.

@Mat'sMug Bingo. Always start with the cells that have something in common.

12:23 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg - I am talking myself down here.

Q: Am I handling "spotting missing dll"(s) right?

MehradI have a .net 4.5 desktop code which has dependencies on some third party libraries (dlls). I need to check these dlls are present before their absence lead to the program to break. This is how I am handling it atm. I am wondering if this is the right way to do so? In my App.xaml.cs protect...

@rolfl I'll post a very detailed explanation of how my algorithm works when I post it

@syb0rg oh I see what you are saying.

Damnit, I don't have time for this.... but ... it's .... dynamite!

No, not dynamite. It's mines!

12:24 AM
I might have to learn the new Apple language. to make me worth more money, sounds like the state finally ditched blackberry's and went to iPhones.....

I'm just waiting for XCode 6 to be released for me to try it out.

I think I will keep trucking on C# and stuff like that so I can keep up rather than try to branch out into everything....

Where is the late binding happening? In the ViewModel? In the View? Is it supposed to be in this code and it's not written yet? As it stands your question isn't very clear. The right way to do what? To display a window? — Mat's Mug 7 secs ago

@rolfl Just for fun, how long time do you think this one would take to solve? (calculating all mine probabilities for all fields)

2 milliseconds.

12:36 AM
@rolfl lol, well, that's quite optimistic....

(and I will employ as much and as expensive an amount of hardware I may need to solve it in that time ;-) )

@rolfl Watson is cheating!!
Not all of us have access to such super-computers!

Well, you ask a question like that .....

@rolfl True, true... How long do you think it would take to solve on my machine Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU @ 2.93GHz, 8 GB RAM

@SimonAndréForsberg - how's this for an idea.....

12:39 AM
I'm sorry, I'm going to vote to close this question as "unclear what you're asking". The only code you've posted is instantiating a MainWindow, a MainWindowViewModel, registering a RequestClose event on the ViewModel to close the View; it's setting the View's DataContext and then displaying the View, and showing a message box if anything goes wrong. If the question was "is this the correct way of displaying a window with MVVM?" then you'd have it all - but as it stands we need to see the code that controls if the required 3rd party dll in question if we're going to review it! — Mat's Mug 14 secs ago

.... you recursively lay out all the mines in all possible combinations that lead to a valid 'grid'.
whenever you have a complete grid, you add a 1 to a solution matrix for all the places that have a mine.
you count the possibile solutions....
and the count of solutions that have that mine in that position, divided by the number of possible solutions, is your probability
@SimonAndréForsberg - make sense?

@rolfl Recursively placing 51 mines (as there are in the game board above with all the 3s) sounds like it would take some time...

Not really, your can break the recursion very quickly when the solution violates the rules.
(like more than 3 (or less than 3) mines around a 3.

@rolfl So how fast do you think it would be? (NOT on Watson! On my 2.93GHz machine)

I would still suggest less than a second.

@rolfl How many solutions would you estimate are possible for the entire board?
(i.e. how many iterations would you have to make?)

fair enough. go for your life. sorry for the ambiguity — Mehrad 4 mins ago
wtf?

billion?

@Mat'sMug Seems like he's having a bad day.

12:47 AM
And, now I really am gone.
Simon, I will think on it.

@rolfl OK, I'll continue discuss it with you tomorrow.

5:16 AM
@JerryCoffin Morning

@chillworld ...but you do get rep (though only on meta).
@Yuushi Well, hello. How are you?

@JerryCoffin It's about 3pm on a Friday here, so I'm anxiously awaiting for the week to end
I've been shoved into doing web-dev
which means trying to learn some combination of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Angular, Coffeescript and Django

@Yuushi Ewww! I'd be wanting to do something else too...

yes, yes indeed...

@JerryCoffin mine rep on SE meta is the same as rep SE
lol I see I did say highest voted answer, must be question ^^

5:21 AM
@chillworld Oops--yeah, I'd forgotten about the split between meta.so and meta.se. meta.so used to have its own rep, separate from SO, but that's all changed now.
@chillworld Yes, but honestly it's really much more a statement than a question...

indeed
I never have much questions :)
well maybe I do have one now (didn't google it yet)
can you protect a json file what needs to be downloaded

Woohoo! I got a comment upvote on SO! :D

gratz jamal

@chillworld 'fraid I can't help with that--my knowledge of JSON is barely better than nonexistent.

no problem. I'm not to lazy to search.
But what do you prefer? serialisation or json? It's a download from 1 application(normal network) that have to be uploaded to another application(high secure network)
I would go to serialisation (mine chef thinks json)
reason : json is readable, you could "mess" with it

5:47 AM
@chillworld what do you mean "protect?"

@DaggNabbit user and pass for accesing file
@DaggNabbit or encrypt the whole file

@chillworld that wouldn't be anything specific to JSON, you'd do it the same way you protect any other resource behind a web server

5:51 AM
@JerryCoffin Night

@DaggNabbit that's the problem, it must be downloaded, put on stick to upload to the high secure network
@JerryCoffin sleep well
and at that moment the file is vurnable

so only certain people would be allowed to download it?
is it being served over http or https?

https and indeed certain people

for a quick fix i would use http basic auth
but only if it's only available via https
if you do it over http the password would be sent in plaintext

@DaggNabbit yes but I mean security of the downloaded file

5:55 AM
what web server are you running, apache2 or IIS or something else?

@DaggNabbit I wan't to avoid people messing with the file or even recreate a file

i think basic auth will work as long as you trust the people you give access not to redistribute it

@DaggNabbit don't laugh jboss euu wait a moment, I don't dare to say (4.0.5)
@DaggNabbit I don't trust anybody ;)

well you have to trust the person who's supposed to download it right?
if you don't trust anyone with it, don't serve it at all ;)

What is trust? I don't know him, so I don't trust him. I trust on good coding ;).
I even don't know over how many people we speak. The more people the more change of 1 rotten apple

5:59 AM
well, you want to make the file available to some people right?
that's all i mean by "trust"

@DaggNabbit actually that isn't needed to the certain right. the first app is not so secure and a lot of people can see that data. The second app must be loaded with consistent data of first app
not everybody can acces the high secure network

so the secure app pulls data from the non-secure app

indeed
and no hardware link between the 2 networks

and the secure app has different data you want to secure, or the same non-secure data?
i mean if the data is already available from non-secure app what's the point of securing it in another place?

it need that data to start, and will be filled out with more data

6:02 AM
ok, got it

ex a course has students
we need to have all the students of that course
the secure app will have all there points

how are you handling authentication on the secure app?

good question (it's from yesterday I got this new app, the non secure app is under mine maintain) but I think LDAP

hmm, I'm not sure what you're worried about then
secure app gets non-secure data from non-secure app
then it adds some secure data
but now it's behind LDAP right?

changing manual the file on the stick
or am I paranoid?

6:07 AM
^ job security? ;)
i think you are being paranoid
if the secure app is getting non-secure data, who cares if everyone can see it on the way in

Indeed but if you have one person who like to be thrown out, that is a good way to do it ;)
seeing is not mine worry, altering data is mine worrying

ahh, true
non-secure app is not behind https?

oeps no
http (mine other application is https)

getting an https cert for non-secure server should do it

you mean certificate the downloaded file

6:10 AM
yeah get a cert for non-secure server and serve that file over https
and download from https

actually very good idea

that should be enough not to worry about MITM attack

they can't alter it or certificate is gone
yeah nice nice
thx

right :)
no problem

now fast a coffee :)

6:26 AM
Hi there
I got a question in regards to the answer of this question I asked codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/54115/…
Mat's Mug suggested it would be better to use a Late Binding for the 3rd party DLL I am using in my code
and separate it from my ViewModel
something like
var service = new LateBindingService();
var viewModel = new MainWindowViewModel(service);
I am using log4net in my code and added it to my references. In my ViewModel all I need to do is to create a `private static readonly ILog myLog = LogManager.GetLogger(...)
to be able to use it
However I am not sure how to late bind this process.

@SimonAndréForsberg And you haven't checked it out either? I suppose :) Don't even know if ou have checked JavaFX out at all yet?

@skiwi I haven't checked out the JavaFX - Android connection, but I have checked out JavaFX a little bit and I'm lovin' it.
Monking @rolfl

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah cool, then you supposedly also have the experience to check it out :P

@SimonAndréForsberg - I went through some numbers, yes, the potential solutions for the minesweeper are large, I still think it is computable, but not sure how fast.
Couple of things.... I don't suppose you have a standard way of representing a 'sea' of mines as a text input or something...?
I'll put in a couple of hours on it this weekend.
That 'sea' you had with all the '3' items... how about the input for that?

@skiwi Yes, I could check it out. I might work a bit on the UI idea for the card game this weekend

@SimonAndréForsberg I still have no clue how to mak eit actually playable though... It's quite a huge project
This is rather interesting... newscientist.com/article/…

@rolfl Look at this image
@rolfl The input can be structured like this:
x_xx______x__xx_-
_3_xx__xx3___3__-
__x_______xxx___-
___3x__3x__3___x-
___x_xxx________-
_____3__________-
______xx___x____-
_______3x__3____-
_________xxx____-
x3_______3______-
_xx__x_x__x_____-
__x3___3_x_3__x_-
__x___xx___xx___-
_3__x3______x3__-
x_x__x___x____x_-
_________x_x____

@SimonAndréForsberg 404

At the moment, those x's need to be there. They are for marking the actual mine positions, and used for counting the mines
Why did the chat insert <i> and <b> tags?

Q: Improving efficiency of Project Euler 185 (16-place Mastermind)

sundar nataraj СундарThis a solution for Project Euler Problem 185. It works fine for the example but slow for the problem statement. How can I improve its speed and efficiency? import itertools from collections import defaultdict def mrange(start, stop, step=1): i = start while i < stop: yield i ...

Euler 185.. Okay. That's somewhat more advanced as to where I've gotten

Q: Revealing module (facade + mediator)

WinchestroI don't have a lot of experience writing libraries and just recently started thinking a lot about structure and patterns. I wrote a tiny module manager based on the facade and mediator design patterns and very vaguely based on require.js / AMD and libraries using facade+mediator patterns like jQ...

Monking @BenVlodgi

@skiwi Yes, it is quite a huge project, which is why it really needs to start small. I figured that if we start small and play around a bit with different ideas we could find out what works best.

Q: Word macro is very slow, looking for improvements

DavidI am using the following macro to insert a mini table of contents between two identical heading styles (e.g. Heading 1). It works fine on small documents, but is very slow on large documents. Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated. Sub MiniTOCFields(HeadingNumber As Long, TOCLevel...

@Morwenn And what is this leek wars ?

@SimonAndréForsberg My internship doesn't involve writing code.

@Morwenn Bad internship. Very bad.

@Marc-Andre A small Dofus-like game were you organize battle of leeks an have to write your own AI to play.

@Marc-Andre Google. And then be happy that you don't speak French. (Although I just realized that you do speak French...)

@skiwi Ergonomics internship.

@Morwenn Writing your own AI to play? OK, I have to admit that it just sounded interesting suddenly.
