Q: Extracting Pixels From Image Byte[]

Maxim GershkovichI have a requirement where I need to extract pixels of a given rectangle within an image byte[]. Specifically I have an image where I have narrowed down an area that I wish to discard and an area which I wish to return and keep (in my case I'm performing face recognition). It looks like this. ...

@Morwenn That's unfortunate then

@Jamal He isn't, he's just confused at how many PDO objects he's using

Somebody please talk!

@Donald.McLean blah

We need to get that stupid GIF scrolled up off the screen.

@Donald.McLean Why? :(

It's very distracting.

That implies you were doing more useful stuff then :)

I have three computers and four monitors, so I multitask a lot

2:32 PM
What are you suppposed to with all of them?

The one computer with two monitors in my work laptop. I'm actually working. One is my primary home computer that I use for all sorts of stuff. The other is the media server - I'm working on sorting through the music library.

What are the monitors for then? ;)

@all .... that's my camera-strap in his mouth.

@skiwi Backup for when the direct neural interface is on the fritz. That's one device that you don't want to use when it's flaking out.

Took two juicy pieces of meat to get it out in the end.

2:37 PM
@rolfl With the question... How did it end up there?

Well, it was around my neck....
which was OK.
But then then when it was my turn to be photograped with the cheetah, I took my camera off, and passed it to the guide....
and the cheetah thought it was a toy.
It's an expensive camera... and I refused to let the cheetah drag it off, so I held tight.
4
Then, as they came to my rescue (the guides), I took a minute or so to undo the strap from the camera, and let the cheetah have the strap.

Value(Camera(@rolfl)) > Value(Life(@rolfl))

I have the strap still, with holes through the neoprene.... where the teeth went through.

That must've been an interesting experience...

It was fascinating.....

2:43 PM
@rolfl Is that you on the left?

On the right ;-)
Yes

That's cute :3

Always wondered how you looked like :p

Her name is princess.... ;-)

Wait, I thought you were a monkey!

2:45 PM
Cheetah's are not particularly scary....
I would not be concerned even if I ran in to one in the wild.

@rolfl Would you be concerned if it had just eaten someone and then came running towads you in the wild?

Or, rather, if I ran in to one in the wild I would know how to be safe, and it would also probably be a very stupid cheetah (and there are not many of those).

Q: Facebook PHP SDK 4.0 post as a page

Matbe81I'm trying to post as a page on a facebook page since 4 days without success. Really frustrating. I'm under PHP 5.4 (as requested by Facebook 4.0 SDK version). Here is my code: For logging-in: <?php require_once( BaseRoot. '/include/scripts/facebook_php_sdk/src/Facebook/FacebookSession.php' ...

@skiwi Cheetah have to kill their prey before they eat it, and they kave to trip it before they kill it, and they don't know how to trip humans.
4
And, it is hard to trip a person if they are not running.

So, don't run away? :)

2:47 PM
I fyou stand your ground against a cheetah you'll be fine.
And don't corner it.
Now, a leopard, or a Lion .... not a chance.

Cats do occasionally know how to trip humans though.
But luckily they can't eat you.

You can ask on StackOverflow how to survive a lion before being attacked by one.
But they would close the question as off-topic and migrate it to pets.

When being chased by lion, you don't have to run faster than the lion to escape....

Then pets.SE would tell you that a wild lion isn't a pet and you would die.

You just have to run faster than the slowest person.
4
Unfortunately, lions tend to hang in prides.
Cheetahs are my favourite animals by far.

2:50 PM
@rolfl So, bring count(lionsInPride) friends with you.

I you have to face a goat, you're doomed. They know how to climb trees!

@skiwi count(lionsInPride) friends where friends.speed < my.speed

Programmers are useless when needing to survive, computer scientists and mathematicians are priceless however.
@Morwenn They dropped from the sky

A: Organizing code in small Mario game

Malachiyou have some redundancy going on here ImageIcon i = new ImageIcon("D:/ICS3U1/EvilMario/images/Menu.jpg");//Image for menu menuBg = i.getImage(); i = new ImageIcon("D:/ICS3U1/EvilMario/images/EvilMario_Background.png"); //Image for background background = i.getImage(); ...

@Malachi The i is a horrible name in this context
Also the file names are hardcoded!

@skiwi I agree and agree again

And I suppose that ImageIcon creates a local (small) copy, and that he wants that one... but haven't read the documentation yet
syntax wise you seem to have survived
docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/javax/swing/… I think it even really does what I supposed it would do

@skiwi nice. does my answer make sense, I wasn't sure if I could do that because I don't know exactly how the Image class works completely

There is no constructor new Image( String .... );rolfl ♦ 25 secs ago

3:50 PM
@Malachi I'm afraid it makes no sense as it doesn't do what the OP wanted anymore... Though relying on a minification by ImageIcon isn't really appropiate as the OP does right now

@rolfl are you kind of following my train of thought there? is it possible to assign the image straight to the image?
looks like there is a little more work that needs to be done but it's possible

@rolfl Do you know if all unit test classes need to have Test appended to their name in general? (I figured it is the case with some plugin I use for code coverage)

for JUnit4, no, noihing needs test as part of the name.
For JUnit3, yes, you do.

How can I be 100% sure I'm running JUnit4? (I am 99% sure)

is this the only way to create an image? the way that the OP is doing it? I can't find a way to give the Image class a file location of an image..... maybe I am looking at this the wrong way

3:58 PM
If you have annotations that work, you are using JUnit4.

Then it must be the plugin that is messing up if there's no Test in a classname

@skiwi - it is common to expect Test as a prefix or suffix on a test class name.

@rolfl but that isn't an Image class, the OP is using an Image Type....
and not a bufferedImage

A BufferedImage is an Image (subclass).

@rolfl Little background story: I named my integration tests HandIT instead of HandIntegrationTest...

4:00 PM
@rolfl Gotcha

A lot of tools grew up in the age of JUnit3, and expect Test as part of the name. Scanning classes and instantiating them to see if they have a @Test annotation is a PITA.
It is much easier to short-circuit the logic by testing the class name before initializing the class.
(trust me, I know).

4:38 PM
Shouldn't be too hard either way... BUt I guess it's the culprit yes
Argh, I just realised I was supposed to write a small essay today...

@skiwi Then write a lot of code that looks like a small essay :)
Speaking of Mugs, where's The Mug?

@SimonAndréForsberg IDK

Today I am on holiday too
I expect Mat's is on holiday as well.
But, it seems his holoday is less work-like than mine.
See, Canada is a monarchy.
And, unlike other countries with a queen, we actually celebrate our queen's birthday.
2
and have a national holiday.
(and, for those people that think I am talking gibberish, Queen Elizabeth is the head-of-state in Canada.... I promise).
Victoria Day (in French: Fête de la Reine) is a federal Canadian public holiday celebrated on the last Monday before May 25, in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday. The date is also, simultaneously, that on which the current reigning Canadian sovereign's official birthday is recognized. It is sometimes informally considered as marking the beginning of the summer season in Canada. The holiday has been observed since before Canada was formed, originally falling on the sovereign's actual birthday, and continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country on the fixed date; the...

@SimonAndréForsberg In my house, when you ask that, you're talking about the dog, whose name is Mugsy.

@SimonAndréForsberg And a Moo.

@Donald.McLean You have a cow?

@skiwi No, but I don't remember how she got that nickname.

@Donald.McLean Another one of your daughters?

Does someone know a non-trivial trivial task to test the Fork-Join Framework on? (It most not be so trivial that Java 8 already implements it)

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, the other daughter.

5:37 PM
I know the one of blurring an image, but taht one requires external input

@skiwi It means I am working, but people expect me to do it for free, and still come in happy tomorrow as if I have done nothing but sleep all (long)weekend

@rolfl Uh, ok

Also, i am working with people in the US and in China, and, as a consequence, I am the only one on holiday, so, it's odd.

@rolfl I am rarely taken seriously

6:06 PM
Sorry, what was that?

@Malachi As if anyone cares
(joking)

:)

Whew, I thought I was about to be taken seriously ....
... and i hate when that happens .
(or is needed).

Ah, I see I have a lovely question leftover from a few days ago
Consider this interface:
public interface EventBus {
    public final static EventBus VOID_EVENT_BUS = new SimpleEventBus(NoEvent.class);
    ...methods
}
In what file should I test VOID_EVENT_BUS?
As I think a EventBusTest class isn't the most correct approach

@skiwi primarily opinion based (i.e. I have no idea)
I don't think it matters that much in which file you do it, honestly.

6:15 PM
SimpleEventBus should be an anonymous inner class instead, and should be tested in EventBusTest class.

@rolfl SimpleEventBus is also a normal regular class that happens to implement EventBus
Was probably not clear form the code I showed there

it was ... and if the interface needs a circular reference to itself, then it should contain the class inside the interface.

The trick is that a SimpleEventBus only accepts events that extend a particular class (or Object.class in absence thereof)
Then the design is borked?
As EventBus eventBus = new SimpleEventBus(); is perfectly valid from everywhere

primarily opinion-based.... but, I don't lik interfaces that have external references to things other than argument and return types.
The design, as it is, allows you to change the interface by altering a file that is not the interface.
This makes maintenance .... harder.

@skiwi Monkey is right, this line should not be inside the interface: public final static EventBus VOID_EVENT_BUS = new SimpleEventBus(NoEvent.class);
It would be better if that was in the SimpleEventBus class

6:19 PM
^^^^ yes, that.

As SimpleEventBus already knows about the interface, and itself (obviously)
the interface should not be dependent on the implementation. (i.e. should not refer to the implementation class anywhere)

I see, it makes sense
Only one remark then

If I had thought about it a boit longer, I would have said what Simon said.
2

Why would VOID_EVENT_BUS need to be inside SimpleEventBus?

Because, Simon says ....

6:21 PM
It is just an implementation detail that it is a SimpleEventBus

@skiwi It doesn't need to be precisely there, but it should not be inside the interface. Put it in a Factory utility class if you'd like.

I can't append an s to EventBus anymore though for the factory method

EventBuses? EventBusFactory? EventBusUtilities? Call it whatever you want.

So by the same arguments Collections.synchronizedList should not be as Collection.synchronizedList? (if it even were possible at that time

 public final class WhateverYouWant { ... }

6:24 PM
@skiwi Yes, that's correct.

welp I guess I'll go for the EventBusFactory then
and then I suppose I might aswell make it a method instead of a variable

I'm not sure why Oracle decided to put some static factory methods in IntStream and stuff though... it's handy to have factory methods in the interface, but then the interface gets coupled with an implementation.

But a method that would combine two eventbusses would be allowed inside EventBus again
Or well... depends on whether it creates a new one or not
@SimonAndréForsberg I don't think they want anyone to create their own Stream implementation.

6:40 PM
My question was about testing it though I just remembered again :p
But now it is straight forward in EventBusFactoryTest

7:03 PM
:o Scientists found a way to convert light (photons) to matter

Um... haven't they known that for a while?

@rolfl Since 1930's somewhere, but nobody believed they could actually do it in practice, now they do.

hmmmm ... I'm wrong.

Do trivial getters and setters also always need to be tested just in case?

^^^ yes.

7:14 PM
"fun"

Hey, that's a line from this song:

To stay sane you can only implement so many trivial unit tests a day.

@SimonAndréForsberg I had doubts about that, but I'm not sure where else it goes. Maybe Programmers.

@rolfl How is > 10K calculated? Is that the overall we see here under our names, or the max of all SE sites the person participates in?

7:27 PM
@skiwi Sum of all SE sites.
(i.e. for you, it is ..... 9105)

@Jamal No, I don't think it belongs on programmers either. The question doesn't feel specific at all.

@SimonAndréForsberg My unit test for HandEvent is twice as big as my HandEvent class

@SimonAndréForsberg Okay, we'll just close it.

On the other hand, the same holds for HandTest vs Hand, that is without HandIntegrationTest

@skiwi Which is another reason for why I don't test every - single - minor - detail.

7:30 PM
When writing tests for some concrete class, may I use the fact that it extends an abstract class in my test classes?

Call me crazy, but right now I have 1000 lines of code in my HStoneTest class, which is supposed to do all the testing of my Hearthstone implementation. All of the tests look more or less like this:
	@Test
	public void lightwarden() {
		game = testGame(HStoneClass.PRIEST);
		HStoneCard lightwarden = superPlayCard("Lightwarden");
		nextTurn();
		HStoneCard charge = playCharge();
		use(charge);
		target(game.getCurrentPlayer().getNextPlayer().getPlayerCard());
		assertTrue(game.getCurrentPlayer().getNextPlayer().getHealth() < 30);
		nextTurn();
		use(game.getCurrentPlayer().getHeroPower());
		target(game.getCurrentPlayer().getPlayerCard());
		assertEquals(30, game.getCurrentPlayer().getNextPlayer().getHealth());

@Mat's Mug ... I see you there!
Come out, come out, wherever you are!

@SimonAndréForsberg Just 1000 lines? Pfff. My SimpleEventBusTest is already over 400 lines.

@skiwi The method above does this: Create the game, play a card, play another card and attack, use healing power, use the first card to attack opponent and check the damage. (I do some assertions inside use, target and nextTurn as well to catch errors on the way)

7:33 PM
@skiwi Could you show me what you're testing? I honestly have no clue how you can come up with more than 400 lines for that.

The link is right there :)

Thanks, mind reader.

@skiwi In my opinion, eventBus.executeEvent(new AlphaEvent()); inside testConstructorWithEventClassConstraint should be a compiler error. Why are you not using generics on your EventBus? Like this: EventBus<BetaEvent> eventBus = new SimpleEventBus(BetaEvent.class);

(which needs a revisit for readable method names)

7:37 PM
Executing an event on an eventbus that doesn't support the event makes no sense.

I hadn't thought about generic event buses at all yet...
It would break my pretty VoidEventBus though

I wish people would've just stuck with XML instead of messing with JSON. That stuff is just nasty

@JeroenVannevel JSON rocks.

@SimonAndréForsberg Feel free to fork it though and submit a patch ;) In all seriousness, I'll consider it at some later point

7:40 PM
hopefully I didn't kill Java too bad on that one

@skiwi Well, I've never been a big fan of your VoidEventBus implementation AFAIK... I think I've said it before but you could override some methods in it to make them do nothing, and so it can be a EventBus<Object>

That's also an option

@JeroenVannevel If we're talking Java, I'm just saying JACKSON LIBRARY FTW!!!
@skiwi I might do that some time :)

All good. I missed an indentation level in the JSON response
Still nasty, but less nasty

@SimonAndréForsberg The battle of some time vs some later point starts now.

7:45 PM
@JeroenVannevel What language are you using? Are you parsing the JSON manually with your own code?

@SimonAndréForsberg No, I'm using Json.NET
Although I did have to manipulate the JSON response I receive from the SO websocket
I don't know what they did with it, but it's lacking stuff
A bunch of " in places they shouldn't be and missing a closing brace

I have had three custom PC's so far including this one... Started with 2GB on first, then 6GB on second, upgraded to 12GB (+ SSD) at som elater point and now it's 16GB here... So we need some bigger improvement to hit 12TB soon ;)
Though with 3D-stacked memory it may well be on the way

My laptop from 3 years only 4GB RAM making it a slow beast compared to the powermonsters I have here :p
@JvR I know of someone who had to install Windows 95 (I think it was, don't think it was so far down to DOS) on like 30+ floppy discs
