Q: First real-world F# application - how "good"/idiomatic is it? (long!)

TeaDrivenDevAfter reading/watching various introductions and blog posts and some code here and there, doing a bit of the Try F# tutorial and starting to read "Real World Functional Programming", I felt I should be able to write a first small real-world application in F#. Or the C++11 in general. You did point it out at first, while I barely took notice. And you're still eligible for Necromancer if you get two more votes.

I totally forgot about that badge :o

12:42 AM
It's "easier" than Revival in that it's not awarded to just one answer.

Errrr, revival is said to be awarded multiple times.
Or is there something I didn't understand?

Oh, I meant for multiple answers on one question. For Revival, it's given to the first answer with a score of 2 after 30 days (but not necessarily the first answer posted). With Necromancer if's any answer with a score of 5 after 60 days.

Q: Component-oriented implementation of JList

MirroredFateOne of the main problems I have with JList is that no component is actually added to it. why not install Java 8? (i know nothing about Java other than it looks like C#)

I've been looking at the parser generator question again, and trying to decide. The more I look at it, the more convinced I am that it's probably really off topic. His primary question seems to be about whether people are interested in the project, and the code in the question is simply an example. It's not clear to me that he really wants a review of the posted code at all. Anybody agree or disagree?

Mat's MugI think your enum is taking naming conventions, making a little paper ball out of it, and throwing it out the window. An enum is a type. As such, its name should be PascalCase. @SimonAndréForsberg sounds like a good idea... what's that about?
Yay I got a checkmark for a answer! This means next recalc I get a [silver-badge:c#]!! :D

@Mat'sMug It's about making a two-player card game. Not ordinary Diamonds and Spades and stuff, but more like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, Castle Wars, and other games. Of course, Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering are probably way too huge to implement all the functionality of, so focusing on a part of it is probably best...

@Mat'sMug Congrats!

basically, a card game where players can use spells/cards against each other.

5:24 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I like that - post it :)

You think this lack-of-details is OK? :)

We don't want to force a specific implementation, so yes

True, true.
Also, I can give some links to where we can find some inspiration.

@SimonAndréForsberg perhaps have base rules, like players have a number of Hit Points

@Mat'sMug Make that 401. ;-)

5:27 PM
The best card games are the ones where we can react to other user's spells.

I haven't found much about the Yu-Gi-Oh game though, does anyone know if there's a list of the cards for that game somewhere? (Yes, I've tried a simple google search)
@Morwenn Yes, like Magic: The Gathering :)
I've never played Yu-Gi-Oh but I guess it's possible there too.

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, Magic is exceptionally good while also being one of the first games. That's pretty incredible :)
In Yu-Gi-Oh, you can use trap cards. I don't if there are other things you can do during the opponent's turn.

Can anyone think of a better title for this? I have found one before, but the OP must've not liked it. The "review" in the title is also filtered, so the next edit will require a title change.

@Santa thanks!
@SimonAndréForsberg haven't played Magic since, like, 15-20 years or so... damn I'm getting old!

@Mat'sMug Boy you've missed a whole bunch of things then!
How about that one, eh @Mat'sMug? :)

Meh, I have it but I don't even use it...

5:36 PM
I like that the challenge would be to implement a structure that would allow creating any of these cards

Magic has a good wording and every situation can be solved. The rules are strict enough to be implemented.

/or that one could go all the way and implement a full-featured multiplayer online game with a tournament mode and whatever
I am the Sword Master!!

@Mat'sMug i'd prefer the card creation..
that sounds difficult enough ;)

The major problem with Magic is that it would take months to create all the cards.

Yes, the challenge could be that. I think that shouldn't be a requirement though. The most important thing would be to create a playable game (theoretically playable at least) with at least 20 cards or so.

5:38 PM
there will probably be some database somewhere

@Morwenn Strict enough to be implemented, but complicated enough that you don't want to implement them all.

where you can get all cards...

@SimonAndréForsberg That's not untrue.

the tricky thing is

I don't think we should focus too much on implementing all the cards. But of course, the more the merrier :)

5:39 PM
How about we make a set of 5-10 cards that your implementation must have, and then the rest is up to you?

@Vogel612 There are databases, but I don't think that there are public semantic databases for the game.

you'd need to be able to automatically create a delegate for the card text effects..

@Mat'sMug Yes, I more or less agree with that. But if I want to make a game resembling Castle Wars, then I don't need the Magic: The Gathering cards.

what's the card game they play in Big Bag Theory?

@morwenn you should be able to get card name, element and text from them..
and maybe there is even info on the cost..

5:41 PM

and that is enough to define a card isn't it ?

@Vogel612 The main problem would be parsing the text. Some abilities have keyword, that's easy to understand, but detailed abilities would be harder to parse :)

that's exactly what i am saying

Even more if we consider that many cards have defect reports (errata) and that the text is outdated (the wording has changed).

@Mat'sMug Awesome typo. :P

5:43 PM
oh shit Big Bang Theory

I think I have some XML around here with a whole bunch of cards from Magic: The Gathering

This has received a closing flag, and it doesn't appear to be on-topic. The OP said they came here because another question on SO wasn't helpful enough.

Q: How to get object(stdClass) from array without the key?

Michel AyresI looked at How to get object(stdClass) from array, but the answer didn't help me that much. Here is a small example: Array ( [25] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 25 [name] => FOO ) [27] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 27 ...

Bon, j'y vais.
Ow, wrong language. I meant: I'm leaving.
See you later! :)

What? We're all French and no one told me?!

Er, I actually have no fucking idea.

@Jamal I'd vote to close as unclear what you're asking...

Nous sommes tous François? Qu'est que c'est?

Français ^^ ...lol

This appears off-topic because you're asking a specific request which is not about a review. If this is correct, then I can just migrate it to SO for you. — Jamal 24 secs ago

C'est plus de long temps que j'ecrire en Français...
Et mon Français, c'est.... comme si comme ça...

It reminds me of when I try to write stuff in German...

Ich spreche Franzosisch nicht!

Anyway, have a good evening! :)

@SimonAndréForsberg bad, but not awful. Could actually get you a date, girls usually like it when a non-French screws it all up like that ;)

I need to learn French...

@Jamal Ja! Das ist sehr gut! Ich kann kleine Deutsche sprechen!

But Java will have to come first...

@Mat'sMug Lol, good thing I'm going to France again on Easter :)
@Jamal I have to be honest, that will probably not help you get any date. Girls don't seem to care about that much (unfortunately)

@SimonAndréForsberg Ich bin laut lauchen! (lol)

@StackExchange Can't you see that's nowhere close to being on-topic?

@SimonAndréForsberg you beat me by exactly 1 second!

I'd primarily close that as not working. Even if the code is included, it's still off-topic.

Welcome to CR! Please include the code you need reviewed... and please see our help center to see what we're all about, we don't debug code here (have you tried StackOverflow?). — Mat's Mug 34 secs ago

@Mat'sMug No, you beat me by one second.

I have to admit I used the auto comment script though
