@Undo - regarding that sombrero one. I think density is relative - it blocks out a fair bit of light from the stars behind it, and reflects a lot, but if you flew a spaceship through it I wonder how bad it would be. My guess is that speed would be dramatically reduced

@Rory That's what I'm wondering about - the spacing of the clumps / particles.
Lol:
That would be a wicked name for a mod-only chat room. Freaky ;-) — Sklivvz Sep 26 at 15:21

Q: Featured a Tag for a Period of Time

PearsonArtPhotoI've seen in encouraged amount many sites to encourage people to ask for a period of time about a specific topic, in a way to encourage more site activity. Space Exploration has recently started doing this. We asked in our chatroom if there was a better way to feature a particular topic for a wee...

I thought the exact same thing when I saw 'the observatory'

a bit of support please ;)

@Tildal Already upvoted. Not sure if it will make it through the meta hoards' ritual tearing apart, though :)

8:09 PM
@Undo Right, whatever new game they're busy crushing skulls of virtual opponents in, it can wait. Remind me not to argue, if there's gonna be lazy arses commenting tho, please.
there's alway a lot of opposition to do much anything ... effort isn't one of the tags on mSO, as you have probably noticed yourself LOL

@TildalWave upvoted and commented on linuxios' answer
And I like your mockup
very professional

@RoryAlsop Cheers!
@RoryAlsop It's actually just reusing stuff in there already, and a bit of copy pasting in Chrome, not even much at all
@RoryAlsop mind if I ask for support on Sec.SE in DMZ too?

@TildalWave have you posted it there too?
oh, I see what you mean
yes - hang on a sec

the proposal please, not my answer... and maybe Gilles would like to add an answer too
@RoryAlsop hehe nice, thanks! :)

Aaack! Too much blue! Must break it up!

8:18 PM
@Undo ...joinnn usssss
become blue
Oh, hangon, that is wrong - I play for the Enlightened...not those nasty blue smurfs, the Resistance
www.ingress.com

@RoryAlsop I really don't know if I would be the best choice for a diamond around here, TBH.
@TildalWave ^Look good?
Oh dear, I just made my 100th mSO answer.

8:36 PM
@Undo hahaha - less 'evil looking' ?
@Undo and you are nearly at 10k on MSO!
you're on page 4 of users there!
I'm only on page 9. But my rep there is a very cool 3,333

@UV-D I just realized that you declined your nomination. While that is a little disappointing, I definitely understand being busy.

9:20 PM
@Undo Oh sure, better than the intimidating red... those look like some sort of warning. Maybe not really so green and using same one as for accepted, or not green at all, but yeah pretty much anything else than red and dark gray that are now used

9:34 PM
How's this? I used same colors as for top banner and links in it
I've also made one with the accept green
which one looks better?

10:17 PM
@Tildal I would go for either - any color would really work, as long as it's not red. Even a dark blue would work.

For the sombrero question, my favourite quote from the definitive paper on the subject is:

@Undo yup... still added to the answer these two, because I wanted to also mention there's an unused class that could easily be reused for this purpose in the CSS

The dust density is then simple ....loads of maths
Check out the full paper:

HELLO ALL

hahaha yes... it's simple actually... there's a volume of a sphere, and particle density, and... what the bleep? aha, sure, I get it... yup... really simple.
10 hours later...

10:22 PM
lol

I read the whole paper, hoping I could quickly pop up an answer before bed saying - yeah, they're roughly this far apart...
not gonna happen

ooh maybe I am invisible

I mean, I was pretty good at calculus, enjoyed quantum physics and astrophysics, but that was a long long time ago
in a galaxy far far away

@RoryAlsop oh just use wiki and quote somewhere between 10^-4 to 10^6 particles per cubic centimeter... it's still like 16 orders of magnitude less than water
I think those were the quotes there

I could probably streak around the room wearing nothing but a chicken suit

10:24 PM
liquid water should be about 10^22 ppcm^3
@UV-D Like the NASA's Camilla?

hmmm being invisible is... well, I don't know

@UV-D like I just did
minus the chicken suit

dang it, I am not invisible after all...lol

Did sombrero lady see you?

@UV-D :P :P: P pppppfffff you're easy!! LOL HELLO EARTHLING!!

10:26 PM
nah, sombrero lady is laying low today

new gravatar too

Ya'll realize that for April 1st I need to change my name to Sombrero Lady, right?

shiny

Earthlings.... hiss... spit

hehe

10:27 PM
lol

star wall reads funny now

mg I will actually no rep cap for only the 2nd time

I'm imagining something like this:

snare drum

10:30 PM
wha?

BTW @RhysW, what is a tildal? :O

Q: NOT READY FOR PUBLIC BETA — What function should this site serve?

Jon EricsonWe've decided to keep Astronomy Stack Exchange in PRIVATE beta for one more week. The Community Manager team reviewed the site so far and, while we love the enthusiasm here, we are deeply concerned that many of the questions and answers are poor or literal copies of material available elsewhere ...

:(

dang

They're probably right. We have work to do.

I have tried improving and it still is not good enough?

10:32 PM
You're not the problem.
We all need to pitch in and ask detailed questions.
@JonEricson Regarding the latest meta post, are we in serious danger here?
I really don't like the tone of that post, to be honest.

Well, for what it's worth, I don't think it's that bad that we've more or less answered those 200 easy questions either, they'd always want to come back even if we tried to remove them. The problem is, how I see it, that not many questions are challenging enough. Anyone in the field will be able to pull most of the answers out of their heads while sleeping, even telling you where to check for numbers and such...

@TildalWave Well, maybe we could rally the troops at Space.SE somehow?

I like those questions that can be answered with descriptions, analogies, e.t.c., I really do... but I'm not sure those were meant to be here in such numbers during private beta
@Undo What do you have in mind?

am very worried

@UV-D Frankly, I am too.
@TildalWave I'm not sure. Do we have pretty much everyone from The Pod Bay here already?

10:41 PM
Howdy, I wanted to give my two cents on the current situation...

@Guillochon Go for it.

@Undo 80% of SEx.SE is already here, and it actually shows on SEx.SE already... and there was possibly the best day for Space Exploration in the last 10 years just yesterday... Cygnus capture, Falcon 9 launch, Proton M launch... loads of interesting turns of events e.t.c. ... and there were maybe 5 of us there, 3 of which not even active on the site that much

So, without knowing specifically if I am stuffing up, I am worried, confused and a bit disenchanted

I think the level of questions we should be asking should be roughly on par with graduate level homework questions.

@Guillochon Sounds about right.

10:43 PM

Q: Relation between brightness and magnitude

NivalthLet say we measure the superficial brightness of an object in the $B$ band, $I_{B}$ measured in $\displaystyle\frac{L_{*}}{\mbox{pc}^2}$ where $L_{*}$ is solar luminosity and $\mbox{pc}$ is parsec. I have to show that, in magnitudes per arc sec $$\mu_{B}=27.05-2.5\log(I_{B}) $$ My guess is that...

You mean like this?
We don't even have MathJax yet

@TildalWave Yes, more like that. And not having MathJax is a huge problem, IMHO.
I do really like the example question/answer they posted on meta, that's a graduate-level question on the observer side of things

well, that is buzz kill

Well let's push more for it then... we can't have questions requiring MathJax, or answers for them unless we get it. I don't see many wanting to capture formulas in images... that's too elaborate

It's a bit easier to answer technical observer questions without math than it is to answer theoretical questions
Because the former is largely diagrams, pictures, etc.

Still, it's very important.

10:46 PM
so, are theoretical questions permitted?

@Guillochon indeed ... there's not much one can do with HTML markup... there's limits to how useful sup and sub are LOL

@UV-D To a point. I'm not sure where the point is.

@Undo It's an extension of the beta. We usually give sites a week to prove themselves, so you have a bit more time. It happens from time to time:

Is it a problem that I refuse to use Wikipedia? (I find academic papers far more credible)

Q: NOT READY FOR PUBLIC BETA -- What is this site about?

Robert CartainoWe decided to keep the Philosophy Stack Exchange in PRIVATE beta a bit longer until we can get a clear statement (and enforcement) of one major issue: What is this site about? In particular, there seems to be two types of questions asked on this site: Questions about the branches of philosoph...

10:47 PM
@JonEricson We're just discussing it ;)

@JonEricson One thing to consider: LaTeX would be very helpful to us - we kind of need it for the questions we really want here.

Even for some of the theoretical questions that I have written
(Which I don't know are acceptable or not)

I also think there's a publicity problem. I would like to share the site with other astronomers/astrophysicists I know, but I also know that it's hard to get a critical mass of people willing to put much time into something like this.
Frankly I don't personally want to be answering more than ~1 technical question a week myself, and I know that many others like me are in the same boat.

@Guillochon New members can join a private beta through an invite, there's a box to invite people on the right to every main site page

@Undo I'll be honest, I don't see it yet. There are a handful of questions where it might make the answer a little nicer, but:

10:51 PM
I'm just a little worried that we might be kind of discouraging the questions by not having it.
Anyway, I got to go. Sorry to leave right now, though.
Bye, people. Make decisions while I'm not around, please :)

@JonEricson my last 2 questions, is there a problem with them?

@JonEricson I think the issue is that the website is not attractive to the sorts of people who would potentially want to use it. What you're basically asking people to do is chop down trees with golf clubs... :-)

@Guillochon In the private beta we aren't looking to pull people in. Rather we are trying to get things sorted out so that we have all the kinks worked out before the public comes. I'll raise the issue with the team to see if this is a possibility, however.

@JonEricson are theoretical planetary sciences (including solar system and exoplanets) on topic or have I been wasting mine and everyone else's time
not everyone is a backyard or professional observational astronomoer

@JonEricson Thanks. It's not clear to me that's the primary problem, but it certainly seems to be a contributor.

10:59 PM
@UV-D I'm not sure what you are asking (here in chat). Those topics seem to be pretty squarely the subject of the site.

@JonEricson just wanted to confirm that

I'm going to make an effort right now to ask ~5 hard questions. I only asked one so far, and it's on the easy side of things. I doubt I'll get answers in the near-term, but hopefully it will be a model.

@JonEricson the 2nd question, is the way I am writing my questions now (the past 2 questions) and the way I answer a problem?

@UV-D It's not so much that "people are doing it wrong". This site isn't going succeed or fail on the back of one or two people.

@JonEricson yes, but before I continue, I need to know if I am doing it right

11:03 PM
@Guillochon You know, I've been on brand new sites where I asked questions that I thought would be too hard---and got some amazing and surprising answers. You gotta trust yourselves a bit.

My sombrero galaxy element question is an example.

so are my 'hot jupiters' and 'observing exoplenet' questions crap?

Q: What is the predominant element in the dust of the Sombrero Galaxy?

Undo The Sombrero Galaxy contains a rather peculiar ring of dust orbiting it (seen as the dark ring on the outer edge). What is the prevalent element in this dust? Carbon?

well, I don't know how to proceed

@Undo The question is framed as if the Sombrero galaxy has a peculiar elemental composition (which is sort of weird), really the answer to your question is just the answer to the question of "what is dust made of?"

11:08 PM
@UV-D No. I wouldn't say so. It seems like your questions are generally well received and you are getting interesting answers.
But it Stack Exchange really works best when people ask problems they actually face.

well, that is disheartening - that means I have nothing else to post

@Undo It's just the question itself seems to presuppose that just because the Sombrero galaxy is edge-on and has a prominent dust lane that the dust must be made of weird stuff. It shows that what you really want to know is what is dust made out of (and thus explains the answer you received).

@JonEricson the questions I ask about the theoretical side of things and problems I am facing, in understanding the latest theories and ideas

Another issue is that many of the questions I would ask are not answerable without doing years of additional research. The best someone can do is write a short summary of the litany of ideas to explain a particular concept.

Q: Is there a rule of thumb for objective questions asked out of curiosity?

Shog9Isaac Moses, the patriarch of Mi Yodeya, wrote something that caught my eye the other day: [...] the general Stack Exchange directive, expressed in the uneditable part of that section of the About page, to "Focus on questions about an actual problem you have faced. Include details about what...

This is very much an open question.

11:13 PM
@JonEricson that one from Shog or mine?
@JonEricson I am now utterly confused
I seriously thought that I was making a positive and constructive contribution
(and I was going to get into backyard exoplanet observations, ironically)

@Guillochon Hmm actually, such questions can be sometimes difficult to argue, that the answer is in some other question. I kinda like such questions, even if they present some miscomprehension in the question, because they provide for an opportunity to discuss something in general, as well as go later back to specifics. So it's a bit of both, and exactly such questions also tend to be rep trains and gain many new members for the site. So... a bit of both is IMO really, really good.

@TidalWave I don't mind that level of question, but the issue is that the balance is definitely towards those sorts of questions

I.e. we could probably make new, really interesting questions by "arguing" some of the points made from the "simple ones"

I am confused, totally confused

@TidalWave Sure. A better question I think would be "how much dust is in the Sombrero galaxy?"
there's a question one could calculate, but not answer immediately
How about I post a few example questions in the chat, and you guys let me know if it should be written out into a full question

11:20 PM
@Guillochon I know, that's what I've been trying to fight here from the very start... not in this chat, or people that tend to come here, but there were some instances of members going on a copy/paste frenzy.

1. What are the current observational limits on the existence of Dyson spheres/swarms/rings?

@Guillochon good example yes, because you'd need to deduct the answer and give references, examples in the process

@TildalWave I am utterly confused

@UV-D why?

2. Can the Sun's internal temperature currently be measured by the neutrinos it produces?

11:22 PM
well I have just been explaining it above

think "thought provoking" = good, "can be copied from external sources" = bad

3. Could two planets orbit the same star with the same orbital period, but not orbit one another?

my questions were written after I had checked online - even checking that website I consider as non-credible - Wikipedia
so is there a problem with the way I am writing myquestions and indeed, my answers?

@UV-D this is wrong.... look, you're clearly interested in the field, you probably read something and have questions you're not sure about and can't find answers... that would be a good source of good questions.

by the way, the backyard viewing of exoplanets is of a real life project I am considering starting
@TildalWave that is where my questions have come from, all of them

11:25 PM
4. How many stars are within the spiral arm that hosts the Sun?

@Guillochon I may b able to research and give an answer to that one

"Why is JWST so important" = bad question, "How will the JWST infrared observations be transposed to visible spectrum images" = good question (IMO)

phew not one of mine

@UV-D Oh have it, I don't really have the time. It shouldn't matter so much who posts what, not now at least.

@TildalWave sorry?
I was just kidding...sheesh

11:28 PM
@UV-D Oh, sorry I thought you were replying to me

5. Are any Pluto-sized objects remaining to be discovered in the Kuiper Belt?

@TildalWave well, okay then - please don't think so lowly of me - I am trying to understand how to improve my own contribbutions to help the site.

6. What are the current observational constraints on the existence of Nemesis?

@Guillochon this one I have a few references here

7. Statistically, how close was the closest supernova to Earth in the past billion years?
8. Which known star is observationally the most similar to our own Sun?

11:32 PM
@Guillochon can answer this one too

@UV-D That's good, however I think the idea is to come up with some quality questions that take some time to answer

okay, sorry

9. Did more than one satellite initially form out of the debris that formed the Moon?

@Guillochon perhaps that could be an answer to supplement the existing question about the formation of the moon

10. What is ratio of carbon to oxygen in carbon-oxygen white dwarfs?

11:35 PM
@Guillochon Possibly a great question.

11. What fraction of moons in the solar system were captured rather than forming in-situ?

well, i'll be back later - maybe

12. If the Milky Way's central black hole suddenly became an AGN, would it be visible to the naked eye?

@Guillochon 1) not sure, might be too broad, 2) fine, but possibly for Phy.SE, depends on wording, 3) too easy, if you don't also ask for examples 4) argumentative? define boundaries of the spiral arm 5) Harrington's 10th planet? No... but could be reworded to ask for exoplanetary mass of the Solar system, or something like that 6) Actually good IMO, 7) Ask for evidence, otherwise argumentative, 8) Too broad? Define "Sun" then ask for numbers, there would be many, 9) Define scope,...

On 5: You think that the constraints on Nemesis are more poor than that on finding another Pluto-sized object? Eris was found very recently...

11:42 PM
10) Maybe, but sounds too broad?, 11) Argumentative, reword it to ask for evidence, which ones we can prove and to what extent that either of the two were their source, 12) You know that is a no... it'll take roughly what? Out of my head ... 100.000 years?

8, revised: Which star is spectroscopically the most similar to our own Sun?

@Guillochon yes, better
maybe also define range?

On 11: I think this one has a definitive answer, save a few objects for which the origin is unknown. I just don't know the number...

@Guillochon No, I don't think that... it's just that some might be answering about the existence of the 10th planet, so be careful how you word it, that's all

On 10: I know this to be a question without a known answer, however it's very important for type Ia supernova science to know the ratio.
On 12: I didn't mean the light travel time.

11:46 PM
@Guillochon then be really specific, define age, size, e.t.c. constraints... or find other ways to ask for studies on the matter (no pun LOL)

@TildalWave Sure, that would be the content of the question.
@TidalWave Can't fit all the details into the title.

@TildalWave can I ask your opinion about a possible question

@UV-D sure, but I'm no authority on the matter, you realize that? I mean, you can ask anyone here

okay, you and anyone:

well, I can only speak for myself :P (gotcha!)

11:49 PM
What is the current accepted hypothesis as to what caused the Kuiper Belt disturbance that resulted in the Late Heavy Bombardment
in the question I will obviously put links to what I have found (non-Wikipedia)

@UV-D I take issue with using "currently accepted" in question titles
almost nothing is currently accepted...

With this bug I contacted and still coughing, I've noticed I laugh like Mumbly... so I'd laugh, then recursively laugh at myself for laughing like I do LOL

so removed 'current accepted'
it is a bit wordy for a title - so that would help
What is the hypothesis as to what caused the Kuiper Belt disturbance that resulted in the Late Heavy Bombardment? - is that better?

Again, "the" hypothesis implies that there's only one :P

What are the hypotheses as to what caused the Kuiper Belt disturbance that resulted in the Late Heavy Bombardment

11:53 PM
@UV-D I think it's fine, but make sure you word it "less educated" also in the body, so it can be searched easier... in essence, describe the meaning of the question also for non-scientists in the crowd, so they can learn something
and it makes Google SEO happier LOL

@TildalWave wasn't that the problem in my earlier questions? or do you think a mix of the two is needed

Alright well, I threw out 12 question possibilities. I think maybe what we should do is have a wiki post with just question titles, and then the community can choose to flesh out the ones it chooses to?
I really don't want to write up 12 questions all by myself unless there's a communal effort
Really, we should have a good 100+ unique questions

would you like me to write a couple of questions? (along my own example)? I don't mind

@UV-D I like to use both, but each will have their own style of writing. I'd sometimes simply hate to use the same word twice if there are alternatives, but have noticed that on other days I'd repeat myself more often... dunno, your call. It's about personal style, so take my suggestion as just that - a suggestion. ;)

So @Guillochon would you like me to post one of those examples?
So @TildalWave shall I go ahead with the question? is it any good?

11:58 PM
I posted the dyson sphere one
I'll post a few more while I'm motivated

defining something also in common terms can sometimes be really hard and it's kind of an art almost, not to oversimplify it and still capture the gist of it... I'd sometimes fail, other times succeed, more frequently than not tho, I'd just find myself repeating same analogies my professors would use back at school
