Hi All. Here's my question

Q: The moving capacitor

Andrew PalfreymanTo what extent can a charged capacitor mounted on a moving platform (e.g. a rotating wheel) be considered an electric current generator? Electric current, after all, is nothing more than the transport of charge. Some extra detail: Because a capacitor is a charge separation device, do the charges...

Feel free to pitch in at the link

How my department postpones labs:
Hi all,

Most of you will be suffering from post-midsem hangover syndrome, which is known to
cause trouble recalling concepts discussed before the midsem.

So we have decided to postpone today's lab session to next week. Please do attend
the lecture tomorrow (same venue: IC-2). I have noticed that taking notes in
lectures seems to be unfashionable these days. I recommend that you bring notebooks
and take notes during Prof. Xs blackboard lecture tomorrow.

@OmnipresentAbsence Resistance/Thermal conductivity. (Kirchhoff's laws work in both places)
How complex numbers crop up everywhere
The Euler-Lagrange equations work for any path optimization

SHM is the biggest example. It arises because for any formula of the form F=f(x), we can almost always do a linear approximation by differentiating

Q: How to create a new tag

Shreesha EinstienHow to create a new tag which I didn't find in the tag list. It might be an important tag. I also want to create it to earn a badge

I can't believe that I didn't think of SHM first. I'll go drown myself now :p

no, no drowning allowed
hey @ManishEarth how you doing?

doing well

Pro tip of the day: in LaTeX use \langle and \rangle for bras and kets, never < and >
3
Hah..!!!

@DavidZ I guess it would be nice if the | were better sized in comparison to \langle and \rangle.

@aufkag yeah, which brings me to the other half of that tip: \lvert and \rvert, not |.

[Trying...]

In actual LaTeX the braket package takes care of all this.

@DavidZ I didn't see \lvert before. Thanks!
@DavidZ I suppose \lvert and \rvert can be used interchangeably without any visual difference?

6:40 PM
As far as I know, yeah.

@DavidZ It would be nice to have a smart pop-up or something like it: It appears you are using bra-ket notation: please use \langle \lvert \rangle instead of < | >.

@CrazyBuddy LOL
@DavidZ or (hint hint) physymb

@ManishEarth which just includes braket
@aufkag *sigh*
:-P

oh i see :p

Based on a sample of one, I am convinced that \langle and \rangle are much better known than \lvert or \rvert. (But I wouldn't know, except for a pop-up, what to do about it.)

6:58 PM
You're probably right.
Honestly, I don't think that'd be worth the trouble of including a script; just edit people's posts when you catch them.

Yep

@DavidZ When one uses $$ $$ at the end of a sentence, one usually(?) includes the dot inside the $$ .$$. But what if the sentence is a question? If you include the "?" within $$ $$, it's in the wrong font...

@aufkag I just phrase things so that I don't have to do that.
Like "Is this equation correct? $$[equation]$$"

@DavidZ Yeah, even in the right font it looks strange.

7:08 PM
@DavidZ me too.

Is imitation the most sincere form of flattery, or is outright theft?

...yes?

Can anybody explain the purpose of this edit: meta.physics.stackexchange.com/posts/985/revisions
Does it matter that [2] was before [1]? Was that really worth editing to drag a year-old duplicate back to the front page?
On a 100% unrelated note: cliffmass.blogspot.com/2013/09/…
