12:58 AM
@DanielSank Sounds like you're not really interested... I'll back off.

1:20 AM
I have never seen this room this empty :O just 2 people here

1 hour later…
2:43 AM
@Danu I'm traveling. It's not that I'm not interested. I just have little time to actually think for the next few days.

3 hours later…
user228700
5:18 AM
Hello, everyone :-)

user228700
An excellent video with a message I'd love to have heard two years ago;

Morning :-)
@Kaumudi.H the thing about being old is you have all this useful experience that you think would be really valuable to the young. So you try and tell them, but they won't listen. Then you remember that when you were young you wouldn't listen to the old either :-)

5:36 AM
Actually I suspect it's a fundamentally human trait to think you know best, regardless of your age.

Really? That's a strange impression you have acquired through the ages.

user228700
Oops, sorry about that! Was devouring a packet of potato chips!

Not saying it's wrong, it might even be the general trait for a large class of people, but I don't think every single person on earth thinks he knows the best when he's giving an opinion.

@BalarkaSen trust me on this, I know best :-)

meh

user228700
5:40 AM
I linked to that video because hearing that message (which took me some misery to figure out for myself) two years ago would've saved me a lot of trouble and I know that there are more than a few people here who are preparing for JEE now...

user228700
I'm finally on my way back to familiar ol' Thrissur, BTW! Phew. No more journeying for me now!

This is closer to my perspective of life.

user228700

user228700
Actually, we have just reached! :-)

Aha, travelling by train today. Better than the bus?

user228700
5:46 AM
@JohnRennie So. Much. Better geez.

So another week in Thrissur then back to Chennai?

user228700
Not Thrissur, the city, but a village in Thrissur. But yes. We go back on Friday.

I've just checked today's weather forecast for Chester:

user228700
@BalarkaSen Spiritual progress?

Ah, that looks lively :-)

user228700
5:52 AM
@JohnRennie Whoa!

user228700
Nice. It's been ages since we had any rain :'-(

Actually it's been very dry in the UK. There is already talk about water rationing being necessary later in the year.

@Kaumudi Well, that's a one dimensional view of it, but sure.
Understanding the spirit is one of the major themes of human life in general.

I have a plum tree with a large crop of plums growing on it, and it needs a bit of water. So the rain isn't unwelcome.

user228700
I see :-/ Water rationing started here many months ago.

user228700
5:54 AM
@BalarkaSen One dimensional view? What dyou mean?

user228700
@JohnRennie Ooh, you do?! Nice!

I mean the thing you said is only just a part of what Tarkovskij says in that 5 minute thing. There's a lot more to it.
There's no uLtImAtE tagline to "the meaning of life"

The temptation to analyse the meaning of life is almost irresistible, but I'm unconvinced the exercise has ever achieved anything useful - except provide entertainment I suppose.

user228700
5 minute? It was only 2 minutes long and for the most part, he only spoke of art being a tool to help us in our quest to spiritually progress.

user228700
@JohnRennie Perhaps but that sort of analysis helps us to know how to live our lives well.

5:58 AM
That's not a good summary of what he said.
But sure, why not.

user228700
...OK. What was he saying, then?

@Kaumudi.H maybe and maybe not. There's a lot to be said for just getting on with life without worrying too much about the eternal verities.

user228700
Oh, yes, certainly. I stand by my original point though; pondering the meaning of life can lead to figuring out what gives our lives meaning, which is definitely a fruitful exercise.

Pondering on meaning of life can also lead you down paths dark and deep and destructive (depending on what you consider dark and deep and destructive).
I just recommended you a book about that :P

user228700
^ Also true.

user228700
6:01 AM
@BalarkaSen I know, I know :-P Haven't gotten to it yet, man. I will.

user228700
Actually, I don't know if I will. It depends on how fast my to-do list shortens...

Re:what Andrey said. First one has to understand what spirit according to Andrei Tarkovsky is; it's not some religious, Christian thing, although it does have such connotations. This is hard to explain without watching his films.
The other main theme of that little talk is that knowledge, according to Tarkovsky, is unattainable and a human construct merely. Any meaning of life based on "quest for knowledge" is bound to be based upon human construct, which begs the existential perspective of the question
It's fine. I don't think it's a book for everybody and nothing much will be lost without reading it.

user228700
Ah, that comment about knowledge. Right, right.

user228700
Anyhoo. I have to get off this train in a few minutes. See you both later, bye!

6:21 AM
@JohnRennie At the small scale that your graphic appears in, in this chat room, it looks like they're forecasting a swarm of giant bees over much of north-western England.

@DawoodibnKareem :-) In fact it looks likely that we'll have swarms of wasps this summer. When spring is warm and dry two years in a row that allows the wasp population to boom. I've already seen (and killed) six queen wasps, which is far more than usual.
A friend, who is a lumberjack and therefore more likely to run into wasp nests, confirms that there are far more queen wasps around than usual.

Ooh, that sounds unfortunate. I've never been to England, and it's never occurred to me that it would be a country with a wasp problem. Interesting that it can be correlated to weather patterns.

Wasps are really just a nuisance rather than a hazard in the UK. Unlike in the Americas the wasps here have a painful sting but not a dangerous one. But they are unwelcome and can spoil an outside meal.

I suppose the populations of most insects would vary with weather patterns. It's one of the aspects of global warming that people don't tend to give a lot of thought to.

2 hours later…
8:01 AM
@Kaumudi.H It seems that I'm one of the lucky ones :P :D Although I'm still working on the 'getting good at it' bit...
@JohnRennie ::sigh::
@DawoodibnKareem It's not just insects - I've been told that birds (not sure if all birds or just some) lay eggs at a very specific time of the year that seems to depend on the weather, so if we get some really good weather, really early, that lasts a couple of weeks, a number of birds would lay eggs, only to have their chicks hatch without any food being available, so they die :/

user228700
8:23 AM
@Mithrandir24601 Ah, I see :-) That's great!

user228700
@JohnR: The list contains "Wallace & Gromit"; which one is it?

user228700
While sifting through the list, I also found this:

user228700

user228700
Why?! Jesus Christ, who watches these movies?!

Fans of twilight?

8:42 AM
@Kaumudi.H You're native is in trissur? Mine too!
though i don't know where exactly i stay there :P

user228700
@PhyMan :-P What do u mean?

I don't know the locality properly
Just that it's near the railway station

user228700
Ah, OK...

But i do know ernakulam properly

user228700
I see. I'm in the interior parts of Thrissur. A little away from Pazhayannur :-)

user228700
8:46 AM
@PhyMan Nice! :-) I will (most probably) be attending college there this year.

@Kaumudi.H Just asked my dad, its in a place called keymbukhatakudda.... in east fort
@Kaumudi.H Oh which college?

SBM
Oh
Hello everyone, good afternoon

Hey

user228700
@PhyMan Hopefully MEC.

SBM
All the best for college @Kaumudi.H

user228700
8:49 AM
@PhyMan Unfortunately, I have no idea where that is :-P

Mornin' @SBM @PhyMan and everyone else who happens to be reading this

user228700
@SBM Thanks :-) All the best for JEE!

@Kaumudi.H Isn't it in edapally (Lulu Mall Yaaaayyy!!)
I'll be going to IISc nextyear

@Kaumudi.H All five of the Wallace and Gromit films.

SBM
JEE well that's not until next year

8:50 AM
@Mithrandir24601 Good mornin!

user228700
@PhyMan Edapally hmm. I don't know, I'm not familiar with Ernakulam :-/

user228700
@JohnRennie Nice! :-D

user228700
@PhyMan Ooh, that's great! :-) Congrats!

@Kaumudi.H Thank you!
@Kaumudi.H Youu dindn't start college yet?

user228700
@PhyMan :-P Is the mall good?

SBM
8:51 AM
Congrats @PhyMan

user228700
@PhyMan Nope! It's only May, man. College will start in August...

@Kaumudi.H It's big, went to it only once since it's a bit far away....

user228700
Right, right...

No i meant your 1st year :-\

user228700
Ah. No. I should've joined last year but took a drop year instead. Didn't make it this year either so.

8:52 AM
But with the metro coming up, it'll be easier to travel to
@Kaumudi.H Oh, did it improve or worsen?

user228700
Definitely improved but didn't quite get there.

SBM
oh

Which course are you going to take?

SBM
Don't be disappointed.

user228700
@PhyMan Erm, hopefully C.S.

user228700
8:53 AM
@SBM :-) Thanks.

@SBM You giving jee next year?

SBM
Yes, sort of.
Bad news again, a bus caught fire

"sor tof"?

user228700
@SBM It caught fire? :-o

SBM
Too much bad news for a month

user228700
8:55 AM
Oh, in Bihar. Oh God...

SBM
And half

user228700
@SBM Yes, definitely.

SBM
Not in Bihar

user228700

user228700
^ Not this?

SBM
8:57 AM
No

user228700
Oh God. That's worse, then. Where was this?

SBM
Around Cuttack

user228700
I see...

SBM
Most news doesn't even get noticed.

user228700
Well, I haven't read the news in a while so maybe I'm the one at fault here :-|

SBM
8:59 AM
Not your fault
Nobody can ever know everything

user228700
Right, but I must start reading the newspaper everyday. It's on my to-do list. Goddammit...

SBM
A couple of days back got the news about the death of a kid from my village.
Too much bad news, could we change the topic to something better

user228700
Sure, yeah.

user228700
Physics, for one :-P

SBM
How does one calculate the kinetic energy of a conductor moving in a magnetic field?

user228700
9:10 AM
@SBM Let's hope that someone else will answer this question. I'm on a bit of a marathon, sifting through this list.

user228700
...speaking of which:

user228700

user228700
What? Huh? What?

@SBM Have you drawn a diagram and written the relevant physics down?

@Kaumudi.H must watch 😂😂

user228700
9:12 AM
x'D

@SBM what exactly is the problem?

(also, are you aware that the force on something in a magnetic field depends on the velocity of that thing?)

user228700
How the heck does this movie have 68% on Rotten Tomatoes?!

Maybe it's quite good .......

or, wait, are you talking about a current carrying wire? Or something similar?

user228700
9:14 AM
@PhyMan Nah, I'm not risking it :-P

@Kaumudi.H just imagine, a tyre lying around, and an oblivious person decided to attach it to it's car...... And suddenly, BOOM!!
The suspense would be too much

user228700
Right?! x'D

It has potential to be a nice comedy film too...

user228700
...I doubt it. Anyhoo.

@Kaumudi.H @PhyMan Have you ever seen Flubber? It's good

9:18 AM
@Mithrandir24601 oh yeah
Adam Sandler right?

Don't really know - I enjoyed it as a child, so haven't watched it in many years

The sentient green goo

yep :)

@Mithrandir24601 me too, don't remember much of it
I think there's also a scene with a flying car in it......

@PhyMan I've even forgotten that much :/

9:33 AM
why are we sieving through the very bad movies

No idea

i mean at least watch the good exploitation films if you're looking at B-movies

While one says torque about a point for a rotating body do they mean torque due to only real forces or pseudo forces as well?

you preparing for next year's JEE

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Meh.

Anonymous
9:36 AM
Not again

why physics then man

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen I love physics :P

oh ok
this is for genuine study. gotcha

Anonymous
I don't study everything for JEE man :'D. I'm happy that phase is over now. I can freely learn whatever I want now for atleast 3 months :D

Cool

Anonymous
9:40 AM
And, how are you doing? Summer vacations going on?

Anonymous
I recently start learning competitive programming....it's very enjoyable :)

Anonymous
And also started watching Ted's lectures

yup, it's vacation here. learning a thing or two about math, watching a few movies, reading stuff
Ah nice.

@blue Why wouldn't it?

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Because pseudo forces are not real forces...

9:47 AM
I think you only consider torque of an object from a reference frame away from the object.

@blue How do pseudo forces arise?

In which case, pseudo-forces would not be counted in.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 From the point's frame of reference if we suppose the point is not accelerating we will apply a pseudo force in the opposite direction at COM

Anonymous
It's just to keep the equations intact in all frames

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen I was thinking the same

9:51 AM
@blue So if you've got a force acting at the COM, have you answered your own question?

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 That force is just a book-keeping tool to take into account the frame transition. Suppose we are looking from ground frame then the torque should be only due to the real force. I think they should mention the frame of reference when they say torque about a point.

The reason I'm asking about this is because I can think of a simple scenario where you've got two connected masses falling under gravity - if one mass is lower than the other, it's going to experience a slightly stronger force, so there's going to be a torque. Yet... Gravity's a fictitious force...

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Wait wait, what? Gravity is a fictitious force? (I'm talking in terms of newtonian mechanics only, don't bring in general relativity over here)

@blue did you go through the USACO training?
It's quite good

Anonymous
@PhyMan Never heard of it. Link?

10:02 AM
@blue Fair enough then :P

SBM
Competitive programming ...

(also, my above scenario is a bit more complicated as I'd need to start talking about ideal rods/strings and things)

Anonymous
@PhyMan Do you know any good competitive programming courses in java?

Anonymous
I started with this geeksforgeeks.org/java

10:14 AM
@blue so, to actually answer your question - if you define a pseudo force as something that acts only on the COM, then it doesn't affect the torque, because it's acting only on the COM. Otherwise, a force is a force, and is only called 'pseudo' because it's not there (is = 0) when you're in an inertial frame - if it was called 'non-inertial-frame-force', would you have asked the same question?

SBM
Java?

Anonymous
@SBM yes

SBM
look at Algorithms by Sedgewick

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 I think I agree

SBM
10:35 AM
@blue: The best introductory book for algorithms is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Algorithms

Yeah, I've got that Introduction to Algorithms book - it's good :)

Hey guys! needed some help in simplifying the homogenous gravitational field metric to the Rindler metric. Suppose we have the metric: (1+bk)^(2)dt^(2)-dk^(2)=ds^(2), under the condition that bk<<1, i.e., in the non-relativistic limit, the metric represents the homogeneous gravitational field. I am trying to change this via coordinate transforms to the rindler metric: ds^(2)=r^(2)dt^(2)-dr^(2).
Unable to get the transforms right.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Thanks, it looks great

11:03 AM
@Kaumudi.H Some friends and I did on "trash movie night". It was hilariously weird.
@Kaumudi.H This, likewise, is both exactly what it says on the tin and also pretty funny.

user228700
11:32 AM
Haha, I see :-)

user228700
BTW, @JohnR: I've sent u a list of 8 movies in total :-) YHM...

SBM
"trash movie" ? sounds awful

@Kaumudi.H Got it. I'm away for a week from tomorrow, but I'll sort them when i get back.

user228700
Right, right. Wokay! :-) Thanks so much (again).

user228700
I'm gonna go climb a tree now, thank you very much. Toodles! :-)

SBM
11:36 AM
climb a tree? seriously?

user228700
Yep. It's good fun for all ages; provided age is not a factor that affects the climbing itself...

@BalarkaSen if two manifolds are diffeomorphic, are they the same manifold with the same maximal atlas

SBM
All the best. Coconut trees are hard to climb.

I know that's not true for homeomorphisms

user228700
@SBM Lol, I'm not going to attempt to climb a coconut tree! This is an ol' mango tree.

user228700
11:37 AM
Thanks anyway! :-P

SBM
oh awesome
I just had two mangoes

11:50 AM
Oh wait nvm
$x \mapsto x$ and $x \mapsto x^3$ are diffeomorphic but not equivalent atlases

SBM
atlases ?

Atlas on a manifold

12:07 PM
@JohnRennie @dmckee Is it normal to experience depression after being done with a project?

SBM
no

yes

SBM
don't be depressed

it's normal

@SBM The purpose kinda is for the movies to be awful, in a "so bad it's good" way. Sometimes we end up just watching bad movies that aren't funny to watch, it happens.

12:13 PM
projects are intense

SBM
oh

don't think of it as "depression," think of it as coming down from a highly intense learning experience

SBM
oh

oh?

@Slereah could you please help me out on the question I posted?

SBM
12:23 PM
highly intense learning experience should be fun?

not always

SBM
:(

SBM
Was I that mean?
If so, I'm really sorry

nah, it's all good

SBM
12:30 PM
I've got so much to learn quite literally.

we all do

1 hour later…
1:55 PM
i have one doubt

SBM
oh hello Abhishek, what is it?

one second
why is V=iR1+iR2+iR3

SBM
You see it is a series combination of restistances

SBM
that is there's no branching of paths

2:00 PM
yes

SBM
What effect does that have?

the current remains the same throughout

SBM
yes
If the current in R1 is i
what's it pd?

it is iR1
or may be -iR1
can pd be negative?

SBM
I should have used potential not potential difference

2:04 PM
its ok
i saw your edited version

SBM
You know that potential is a scalar

before I gave the answer

SBM
so

yeah
so, it can be -ve
+ve and 0
i guess

SBM
potential difference can be positive, negative or zero

2:09 PM
hmm
so, in the figure Va-Vp=-iR1
@SBM are you there?

SBM
yes I was trying to study complex analysis

ok
am I right?@SBM

SBM
What does the flow of current have to do with potential? @Abhishekstudent

2:26 PM
it is proportional
to the product of current and resistance @SBM

SBM
Which direction does conventional current flow from?

opposite to the flow of electrons @SBM

SBM
What does the direction have to do with potential?

higher pot. to lower pot.

SBM
so that gives your answer

2:36 PM
umm
how
@SBM how

user228700
@Abhi: Hi. Why did u invite me to the Maths chatroom?

coz maths is cool
i guess

SBM
oh

user228700
Erm, that's a bit strange but OK...

user228700
@JohnR: Away as in completely absent (here) for one week?

2:43 PM
@Kaumudi.H I'll be at my mother's house, but I will still have Internet connectivity so you won't notice any difference.

user228700
Ah, OK.

I just won't able to do anything with the video files when I'm away from my house.

user228700
Right, right. That's completely OK :-) I was only curious whether you'll be away from here for a whole week.

user228700
@SBM You say "oh" a lot :-P

SBM
Óh, I do.

@Kaumudi.H chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=Wokay&room=71 you say "wokay" a lot too 😂😂

SBM
oh :{

user228700
@PhyMan :-P I do, yeah.

SBM
However I'm such a noob

@Kaumudi.H: if you're interested (I'm sure you're not :-) these are the premade curries I bought. In the end I decided it's too hot for curry so I haven't eaten them yet.

Anonymous
2:50 PM
@Abhishekstudent In direction of flow of current potential drops across resistance. So net potential drop across whole circuit is 0. Does that clear things? It's like $+V-iR_1-iR_2-iR_3-...=0$

user228700
> I'm sure you're not

Mmm food

@PhyMan right, right :-)

user228700
Nope, I'm always interested about food :-) ...or anything else also, really.

user228700
And ooh, they look great!

user228700
2:51 PM
@JohnRennie :-P OK enough.

@JohnRennie you like dal?

The chole is very good. I haven't tried the dahl before and I'm looking forward to trying it.

I find dal quite boring

SBM
Try kanji ...

@JohnRennie chole-batura is my favorite

user228700
2:52 PM
@JohnRennie You haven't had dal before?! Wtf!

user228700
@SBM Lol. Please don't :-P

@SBM 😂😂

@Kaumudi.H I've eaten dal before, just not this make of dal.

SBM
What?

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, OK...

user228700
2:53 PM
@SBM Wow, do u really like kanji?

Hate it

which one haven't you tried yet? I'm guessing the yellow one?

@PhyMan ooh, chole with fried bread :-)

user228700
^ Same here. Well, I don't hate it but I certainly don't like it.

SBM
BRB no kanji isn't chole with bread

2:54 PM
@JohnRennie fried bread 😯.??

aka bhature

I Googled chole-batura and found recipes for chole eaten with a type of fried bread.

user228700
Wow, when did all the Indians invade The h Bar? :-P

@JohnRennie Did you see my message?

@Kaumudi.H the Indians were waiting for the right time to invade
@Kaumudi.H it's boring, filled with boring, eaten in boredom

Anonymous
2:55 PM
@SBM What is kanji?

Anonymous
Never heard of it

@JohnRennie oh didn't realize you were talking bout battura

a drink

user228700
@PhyMan There was never a truer word!

@BernardoMeurer Yes. It's normal to feel a bit, well, disconnected after a period of intense work ona projetc.

user228700
2:56 PM
@Avantgarde A meal.

meal? wait

@JohnRennie Every time I finish these things I feel like shit for a couple days

Kanji (漢字; Japanese pronunciation: [kandÊ‘i] listen), or kan'ji, are the adopted logographic Chinese characters (hànzì) that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana and katakana. The Japanese term kanji for the Chinese characters literally means "Han characters" and is written using the same characters as the Chinese word hànzì. == History == Chinese characters first came to Japan on official seals, letters, swords, coins, mirrors, and other decorative items imported from China. The earliest known instance of such an import was the King of Na gold seal given by Emperor...

hm, there's a drink too

user228700
Lol, that's not it.

2:56 PM
what is kanji? :P
