Q: Should commenting be unrestricted?

sammy gerbilCurrently it requires a reputation of 50 points or more to post comments to other users' posts. This creates some problems for new users : Instead of commenting they are tempted to post "answers" which are nothing more than comments. These have to be reviewed and/or flagged for deletion. According to a recent newscientist (vol 233, issue 3109) the dark matter experiments looks quite grim recently, with troubles verifying some observations from the DAMA experiments as well a large number of dark matter models were being ruled out.

It would not be surprising that if this trend continues even when the scheduled detectors were built in 2019, that MOND might be gaining acceptance

4:19 AM
@Secret The current and near future "dark matter" detectors are actually WIMP detectors.

Is axion a type of WIMP?

Certainly MOND will attract at least a little passing attention again but the covariance issue looks to be very hard, while dark matter has other candidates (starting with massive sterile neutrinos and axions and goin on from there) in the wings.
@Secret Last I hear the axion experiments were only at test bed scale. That is zero expectation of seeing anything, just proving that we can get the noise in the detector low enough that it would be able to see something if built to scale.
And scaling up is likely to be expensive. Though usually the costs come down a little between the first test beds and actually getting funding simply because technology advances.

I see, seems these are still at its infancy, in that case there are still a lot of dark matter candidates yet to be tested.

If WIMPs, supersymmetry, axions and heavy sterile neutrinos all fail you start getting into some fairly exotic theories, and I get the feeling that those don't have widespread enthusiasm. And I really do think that even WIMPs not showing up will drive some people back to considering modified gravity scenarios.
I'm trying to remember some of the speculative talks I've seen. I think that if lose more than a couple of the current dark matter candidates we get into a situation where the leptogenesis picture becomes harder to justify and that opens a lot of doors that wouldn't be considered while more "natural" theories are still on the table.

As far I know, for WIMPS, it is basically similar to how that issue of newscientist said, it looks grim with a large swarth of models being ruled out and only a thin band left behind to be tested

LHC still have not seen any signs of supersymmetry, and some said some supersymmetry above the MSSM were ruled out or constrainted based on that

For sterile neutrinos, I recalled last year, ICECUBE's non detection of them ruled out at least one of the models

I don't have much info about axion experiments though, the latest news about it is a calculation that suggest we can use toroidal magnets i
For micro blackholes, I don't recall any gamma ray events nor lensing observations to date being associated with them, despite for ordinary or large black holes, CHANDRA (or maybe another detector) found there are a lot of them, as one of Johnrennie's starred message in a previous chat message shown

4:56 AM
You don't detect sterile neutrinos. Because they don't interact weakly (which is what 'sterile' means). You constrain the mixing matrix for the active flavors and ask how much room there is for non-unitarity.
I haven't been following that story closely, but the constraints (which had been ridiculously loose for a long time because $\theta_{13}$ was such a mystery) have tightened up enough that you have to jump through some hoops to arrange enough mixing to sterile neutrinos early enough in the history of the universe to agree with the BAO studies.
But this story won't be nailed down until the mass hierarchy question is settled. That train is rounding the corner and coming into to view, but it is not here yet.

5:52 AM
Hi, everybody.

Morning
@Danu I would guess most people class this as interesting but ... rather than a paradigm shift.

6:22 AM
Hello.

7:36 AM
Hi, Dr. @JohnRennie.
John, we're all doomed.
Have you seen the new Star Wars poster?
I simply don't know what to do.

become a Trekkie?
:-)

Nah. I like DS9 but that's about it.
I mean, I like Trek as much as the next physicist, but not much more.
I do know my Trek trivia though.

Was Spock's mother or father human?

Mother.
Give me a hard one.
Oh, and who played Spok's mother in the reboot? That was Winona Ryder.

I give up.

@thoughtforfood ?
@EmilioPisanty evening to me ;-) actually very early morning.

10:36 AM
Hello hello :-)

Morning :-)
You haven't been asking about physics much recently. Are you taking a (well earned!) break until you feel more lively?

user228700
:-) Not really. I've been doing a lot of Maths.

Ah. You're on your own there I'm afraid. I've long since forgotten all the maths I knew.

user228700
Yeah :-) It's OK, Calculus is not too difficult... now.

user228700
But being sick has helped with the sleep thing! I've gotten so much sleep these past couple of days :-P

10:45 AM
It seems like an extreme way to get more sleep :-)

user228700
Lol, yes. Last Sunday tho, I slept for 9 hours at night and 6 hours during daytime. It was so awesome :-P

How are you feeling now? I guess not too bad if you're getting maths done.

user228700
"Getting maths done"--only barely. But I'm better, yes. Still not back on track tho; I just woke after having slept for about 2 hours.

I'm getting a new laptop!

user228700
That was random. Did u literally just buy it?

10:50 AM
I did a favour for a friend's company. He wanted to say thank you but I wouldn't accept payment, so he's giving me a new laptop.

user228700
Oh, nice! :-) Which one?

user228700
Sigh, always so modest and kindly :-P

His company supplies laptops so he gets them cheap i.e. wholesale prices. So both of us win :-)

user228700
Oh, cool!

I've been looking for a laptop with a large screen for a while, but it wasn't very important so I didn't want to spend much on it.
So now I've got the laptop I was looking for, and for free!! :-)

user228700
10:53 AM
Holy crap, congratulations!! :-D

user228700
...almost tempted to be a hypocrite and quote my mom: "What goes around comes around" :-P

user228700
LITERALLY, in this case.

It isn't a life changing experience. I'll only be using the laptop when I'm working away e.g. visiting my mother or brother. Still fun though :-)

user228700
:-) BTW! I've had a very adventurous morning today!

Do tell ...

user228700
10:58 AM
Idk if u'd be interested in the least tho :-P

user228700
It has a lot to do with Vlogbrothers.

user228700
So they upload a video once every Wednesday and Saturday.

Adventurous?

user228700
:-P U didn't let me finish.

Oops, sorry ...

user228700
11:00 AM
And the community that has grown around their vids. is close-knit and...really something else.

user228700
I expect that u know how terrible YouTube comment sections usually are.

Indeed!

user228700
The comment section of videos posted by Vlogbrothers (which of course, mainly consist of the community's posts) are so so great.

user228700
We have productive, inclusive and non-abusive conversations about important topics all the time.

user228700
So anyway, that was just me illustrating that the community consists of a bunch of nerds who try their best not to forget to be awesome.

11:03 AM
It's always nice to feel that you connect with people.
That you can just chat about stuff and everyone understands each other.

user228700
Yes, indeed! Story's not over tho.

Go on ...

user228700
I could stop you know, if u're not interested to hear the rest of it :-P

No, no, do go on ...

user228700
OK! So Hank and John, who are the Vlogbrothers, they like to host scavanger hunts from time to time.

user228700
11:05 AM
They'll include subtle hints in the video and then it's up to the nerdfighters to come together to solve the clues that may lead to other videos, stories, websites, etc.

user228700
So one of them, John, talked about motivational quotes today in his video.

user228700
The point of the video itself is not relevant but he did bring up the one (commonly misattributed to) by Walt Disney--If u can dream it, you can do it.

user228700
And he was like "I don't think you know what my dreams are like--I once dreamt that I was a Tuatara!"

user228700
And we all seemed to notice a lizard on his wall...which is usually not there. I mean, he hates bugs so no way that would've gone unnoticed by him.

A clue?

user228700
11:10 AM
YES!

user228700
Thus began the longest comment thread ever!

user228700
I'll spare you the details of how we got there, but eventually, we wind our way to a new forum for us!

user228700
...but it was password protected--more work to do!

user228700
Nobody was allowed to give it out but I was able to figure it out and bam, there's a new forum for the nerdfighters! Apparently, the password will change every week so somebody created another place for us to discuss these things, on discord, which is a place for gamers to chat.

user228700
Only about 300 nerdfighters are in so far but yeah, it's super exciting. None of us have any clue what any of this is about but John promised that there'll be another clue in next week's video.

11:13 AM
How did you work out the password? Tuatara?

user228700
No. OK, so when u get to the forum, it says "It's the newly sainted figure south-east of the Tuatara".

South East of the Tuatara?
South East of New Zealand?

user228700
Yeah.

user228700
Aha, so many people thought it was this but no.

Or was it something on his wall?

user228700
11:15 AM
It took us awhile but see, southeast from the lizard on his wall was...well, his camera and him. So we all searched for "Saints vlogbrothers" on YouTube or on the Nerdfighteria Wiki and found an old video that he'd made back in...yeah, it was waaay back, before I was part of his community.

user228700
Some of us remembered having watched but I went and searched for it.

user228700
In that, he talks about some saints...and sort of comes up with a saint for YouTube.

user228700
Padre Pio. The patron saint of YouTube.

user228700
That was the password. padrepio.

Cool :-) I doubt I would have got that.

user228700
11:18 AM
Yeah, so cool! And there's gonna be another password next week.

user228700
But I doubt if I can find time to continue participating :-(

user228700
:-) Yes, it's almost too easy but yeah, all we had was that lizard and now we have this ongoing chat thread.

A few hours a week doesn't seem too much time to fit in, especially if it's fun. You just need to organise the revision around it.

user228700
It's so cool!

user228700
11:21 AM
Omg, it's so much fun! I haven't ever directly interacted with Nerdfighters before! And man, I have never been around for one of these projects so I'm super excited.

user228700
And yeah, it's just on Wednesdays so it probably won't take that much time.

When you're bashing away at revising I think it's really good to squeeze in some fun downtime.
Anything that isn't revising is good, even if it's just going shopping, but if it's something you love doing that's even better :-)

user228700
Yeeah, no, shopping is really not up my ally :-P

I like shopping for food and laptops - you may have noticed :-)

user228700
But yeah, I'm gonna try to find a way to manage it!

user228700
11:24 AM
:-) I have.

user228700
This is so exciting! I've never been part of an online collaborative project before and it's such a nice experience--especially because all these people well and truly care about the community and about, you know, the world-suck reducing goal :-)

The feeling of community is great.
Again, that's what I get from this site.

user228700
:-) Yeah, same here...sort of.

user228700
Wait, so did u get the laptop already?

No.
The laptop has to be ordered from Dell, so it will be a few days.
Next week some time probably.
There isn't any urgency since I won't be using it until the Easter holiday.

user228700
11:32 AM
Oh, OK! :-)

user228700
Oh, and when's that?

But obviously I'll have to spend some time playing with it the moment I get it :-)
@Kaumudi.H 16th April.

user228700
Oh, OK...

user228700
Of course! :-)

Though my mother is dropping hints that she would like me to come down and visit before then.

user228700
11:34 AM
Oh :-P I see...

Mothers do that sort of thing. Just wait until the first time you move away from home :-)

user228700
:-) Yeah, I guess...

user228700
Alright, I'm off. I'll see u tomorrow :-)

Bye :-)

Today I came across the picture vinyl version of the last Star Wars soundtrack
I was tempted

ooh, cool

These
The actual vinyl has picture :)

Q: Physical meaning of frames in general relativity

UldrethDespite studying the general theory for quite some time, this still eludes me. The geodesic equation can be cast in the form $$ m\frac{d^2x^\mu}{d\tau^2}=-m\Gamma^\mu_{\alpha\beta}\frac{dx^\alpha}{d\tau}\frac{dx^\beta}{d\tau}, $$ so the connection coefficients play the role of a 4-force. The non...

111
@JohnRennie Thanks a lot!! :) I mean, you nail it in just one sentence. :)

1:36 PM
@111 glad it helped :-)

Did you study Latin at university @JohnRennie?

@thoughtforfood No, he learned it from the Romans when they reached Britain
@JohnRennie Good afternoon :P

@BernardoMeurer Hi :-)
@thoughtforfood I did two years of Latin at school, but I haven't studied it since. But a knowledge of Latin kind of seeps in anyway.

Why do you ask?

1:43 PM
Just wondering :-)

Hii @JohnRennie

@JohnRennie for how much time you are here
I have a question

About another 30 seconds I'm afraid. I'm about to go out. Is it a quick question?

No @JohnRennie

1:47 PM
@JohnRennie I have a quick one, can you explain me all of GR? Thanks.

I'll be back in a couple of hours then.

@BernardoMeurer I was going to explain all of GR to Heather some time, but she ran away :-)

@JohnRennie She does that often :P

If anyone else can help me in this

1:50 PM
@JohnRennie I like it when product description goes like "Features a high-quality, top of the line, one of a kind, super mega blaster ADC, capable of... 16 bit 44.1KHz"
Ffs

Ugh, this has to be the worst understanding of cosmology I have ever seen

I see no "understanding" there.

Actually, it will be a good idea if the universe is not a simulation. Because lag is SUPER ANNOYING

Especially on the the Internet :P

So many people believe that the universe began with an explosion in the middle of nowhere, which created all matter...

1:58 PM
@SirCumference It didn't? Didn't the universe begin when the concentrated matter performed a terror attack
and then Jesus was born
4000 years ago
Isn't that how it is?

Jesus was born 2017 years ago.

@thoughtforfood that's impossible, the earth is not that old

To be fair, Lemaître was a catholic priest and he, along with others, helped found cosmology

This isn't as fun without @0celo7 :(

2:04 PM
I really just have a problem with the people claiming the science is a "belief", and then having no idea what the theories actually describe

@SirCumference Was he Japanese?

@BernardoMeurer No? He was Belgian, I think

Ah
sounded like a Japanese name

Uh, not really
Never heard a Japanese name like that
I thought it sounded more like French

Sigh
How long until I can shit talk properly here? When does Ryan come back?

2:07 PM
@BernardoMeurer Is he gonna come back when his ban is lifted?

I'll be damned!
50 dollars on a bloody bubble level!

1 hour later…

@alarge @DavidZ First issue with Wayland: Screenshot tools need to be updated
Wayland has a security feature that doesn't allow one window to look at others
gnome-screenshot works, so there must be some technique

@BernardoMeurer Please don't resume shit-talking in this chat room. Thanks.

@rob You shouldn't say the s-word, you know?

rob
@BernardoMeurer I could say the same to you.

@rob No you couldn't, I can't hear you from across the ocean
(Yes, this is how bored I am)

rob
I'm not interested in playing this game. There have been several conversations recently about how the tone in the hbar is nice lately. Let's try to keep it this way.

3:39 PM
@rob You're a mod, you're not interested in any games because you hate fun
You give children coal for Christmas
And eat Tofu

rob
@BernardoMeurer True story: one Christmas my daughter thought it would be funny if my gift were a pair of dirty socks.

@rob Ha! That's great

@BernardoMeurer shrug. Marketing :-)

My uncle went to the US once, and got everyone Walmart socks for Christmas. The family was very happy
@JohnRennie It would be okay if they had ended that sentence with "24-bit 96KHz" or "32-bit 192KHz" (32-bit is absolute bullshit and doesn't exist though)
The problem is that it's just CD quality :P

Hii @JohnRennie
Now can you help me in that

3:46 PM
Hi. I'm eating lunch for the next half hour or so.

Okay @JohnRennie I will ask you later

4:01 PM
how on Earth did this get that kind of score?

Q: Is this of any real importance to the mathematical scientific community?

George BelcherI'm a 31 year old engineer, and I've recently came up with a way to exactly predict the probability of the number of prime numbers between two different integers. For example using my way, the number of prime numbers between $0$ and $100$ is between $0$ and $50$. And it turns out that it is corr...

Pop-Sci sells.

@EmilioPisanty I'd bet on two effects: (a) more than a few people will vote for ill-considered questions if they generate good answers and (b) Hot Network Questions.
Together they result is outright stupidity.

...and there are 7 people following it :-/

(Note to @JohnRennie: Thanks again for your mention of the Verlinde emergent gravity paper. From my initial quick scan it looks exceptionally interesting and pretty innovative, so I've put it at the top of my detailed-read list [looking at it today].)
(Other folks I know: Hi! and bye. :) )

4:17 PM
Hi
:-)

4:51 PM
@thoughtforfood so it seems. That could be a number of things, though.
Also, how on Earth does this happen?

@EmilioPisanty It says on his profile he is a "Homo Mathematicus"

obe
5:36 PM
hey

hi

obe
lol I baked a blueberry cake with too many blueberries and now it looks like a giant blob of blueberry jam with a cake shell lmao

that's a problem I'd like to have

@obe turn it into a pudding?i.e. eat it hot with custard?

obe
5:40 PM
@JohnRennie with the cake pieces inside it?

@obe yes.
Just cut out a chunk, put it in a bowl, heat in the microwave and add custard.

obe
it cooled down though and now the blueberry part is kinda stiff. what should I do?
oh

I often eat heavy fruit cake like that and it's delicious.

@obe Just eat it, it's food

@obe kinda stiff? Just hack off a chunk with a knife.

obe
5:42 PM
@JohnRennie no I mean it's not jello-y like pudding
anymore

@obe Doesn't matter. It'll go softer when you reheat it. Just try it man. Where's your zest for experimental science? :-)

if it goes wrong, you can still make a smoothie out of it.

A smoothie out of blueberry cake?

obe
I want to but thing is I don't have a microwave in my house.

Well put a chunk in a dish and put the dish in the oven for 5 minutes.

obe
5:44 PM
Ok

Add cream if you don't have any custard
Custard would be better though

obe
man I don't have anything like that in my house
my parents are health freaks
can't wait to go to my apartment near campus in a few months

Cream and custard are both healthy :-)
I suspect you'll find the reheated cake too sticky without cream or custard
Actually custard is just milk, sugar and eggs - no fat. So custard is pretty healthy.

obe
oh can i make it myself?
it's just that the cream and custard in stores is full of other shit too
i dont mind personally but yea

Fun fact: German has no proper word for "custard".

5:49 PM
Google for a recipe, but custard is quite hard to make for the beginner. It's very easy to overheat it and the eggs curdle. It turns into scrambled eggs in sweetened milk, which isn't nice :-)

obe
lol

@ACuriousMind That's OK, neither have the French :-)
They just call it creme Anglaise.

My understanding is that creme Anglaise is a subset of custards

I don't think we have it in Portuguese either
we might call it a Flan IIRC

obe
idk I think most non-english languages dont have a word for custard

5:52 PM
Very helpful :-)

obe
reminds me of

@ACuriousMind In the UK the word custard normally means a pouring sauce, which is I think pretty much what creme Anglaise is.

@ACuriousMind True, I never heard of it

The French do all sorts of wonderful set custards e.g. creme brulee (insert acute accent somewhere in there)

obe
5:54 PM
tubby custard and cookies yummm

Crème Brûlée
Latin languages rule!

Show off :-)

Or romance languages or whatever it's called :P
@JohnRennie It's the first time in years I've had a chance to show off the 4 years of French I had in school :P
Je voudrais un croissant
all I ever learned

@ACuriousMind That's an impressively fast closure

I have it!
I have obtained the magic
I can now just look at limits and correctly guess what they'll be :P

5:58 PM
@EmilioPisanty The question appeared just as I was looking at the question tab and I was lucky to find the dupe with the first search terms I tried.

@BernardoMeurer Congrats! I remember the joy of the day I started to understand wikipedia pages very well
