12:42 AM
Last night dream involving a crank textbook posting a bad PSE question about his book (which is some warped version of MTW gravitation). Acuriousmind and Johnrennie discussed it, which at the end of the conversation he allured to 3 banned users.

Meanwhile I also joined their discussion as I paradoxically found some of the crank's idea seemed to make sense and claimed that I found parallels in the actual MTW

The book includes some pages about consistent theories, where there's a multiple choice involving some gradient diagrams. One of these corresponds to special relativity because it repr
In the dream the two points I asked about acuriousmind and johnrennie is the following:
1. We know that when events are ordered normally, then *cutscene showing a park with a person walking past* as time progressed the motion looks smooth and continuous, but what if instead everything is the same, but the time evolution is in random. Clearly, because it is parametrised by a continous parameter that represents time, the motion is still continuous, but perhaps to us (who are used to events ordered in the usual way), it will look like a discontinous bunch of jumps

Pretty sure the dream is inspired from somehow the latest episode of PBS infinity and PBS spacetime (which both talked about singularities), mixed with simpleart's integral challenge.

I do, however, found that idea explored in the dream (a continuum and time evolution with scrambled order) quite interesting. I might explore it later in the context of nowhere continuous functions.

Now I must get back to sleep because I am so tired

2:02 AM
@EmilioPisanty Oh god...
Not the bees!

@BernardoMeurer Seems like you're into some exotic distros... I have not much patience for harder to setup distros because I don't want formatting my pc to be a heavier burden :P Anyway, that said I've only been into Linuxmint, Xubuntu and Ubuntu, mainly ubuntu-based distros, for compatibility, etc What's wrong with APT, btw?
Anyone skilled in cheering up? So sad right now, awful exam compared to what I could do...

@Kelthar Huh?
What class?

Quantum mechanics... I worked for it and was ready, but then I was totally bananas at the exam to the point I could do the harder and not the simplest questions... Also, it's so annoying that something as simple but that you cannot control, like not getting a proper night of sleep (because you take to long to fall asleep or whatnot) can nullify the effort I put into it

@Kelthar Don't worry, he'll probably curve it

yea i know exactly how you feel...

2:14 AM
Tons of people have that same problem
That's good reason for curving

what is curving? i'm pretty new to this whole learning thing

I also don't know what you mean

@mochacat If lot's of people don't do too well on a test, the professor might realize the test was really hard and "curve" it, meaning he will give students a higher score than they actually got

and that happens to everyone, the whole not performing as well as you had expected to thing
oh sweet

Depends on the professor though

2:17 AM
man i still live in a 'teacher' environment

@mochacat What you mean?

still in high school :)

Oh, what grade?
Even in high school, some teachers curved the tests

grade 9. people call grade 9 middle school in other places i think

Woah, now I feel old...
Freshman in college

2:19 AM
It is a bit rare in my uni

man that's awesome

lol, I'm in 3rd year in college

also awesome

wouldn't guess I'm probably the oldest lol

@Kelthar Now I feel younger :)

2:19 AM
ahaha, glad to help

What are you majoring in?

Engineering Physics
you?

Neat. I'm double majoring in astronomy and comp science
The former is to feed my curiosity about the universe, the latter is so I actually have a job when I come out :P

wow, nice, isn't it too heavy to do 2 at the same time?

just googled engineering physics. seems like a great thing to major in

2:21 AM
@Kelthar It's hella hard
I'll see what I can handle

how would you rate your overall experience out of 10 so far

In college? I dunno
I'm doing really well in some areas and badly in others

@mochacat well, the list of subject is here, in case you're curious: fenix.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/cursos/meft/paginas-de-disciplinas
Anyway, my uni is so heavy it would just be impossible to do that... They are a bit crazy

my spanish is a little rusty but wow that sounds like everything i've ever wanted to learn

@Kelthar So is mine, but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place :/
I wanna learn about the universe, but I need a viable job
So I'm stressing myself by majoring in both
@mochacat ¿Puedes hablarlo?

2:25 AM
ahahaha, what a picture
I see
Are you spanish?

@SirCumference un poco but i will never be better than google translate

Nah, neither is anyone in my family
I just liked learning languages in high school and kept with it

sweet, what else do you speak?

Just English and (sorta) Spanish
Still learning :)

also what's wrong with finding jobs with an astronomy degree?

2:26 AM
Pffh

I can understand spanish due to the similarity with portuguese
can't speak that well though
I comes out as a mix of the two xD

i heard from @BernardoMeurer that you just have to get drunk and speak spanish to speak portuguese. is that true?

@mochacat I can come up with a list: not enough jobs, you can't choose your location, you must spend ~15 years in school, you start with a pretty low salary, etc.

huh
15 years

+ or - 3 years
That's my guess

2:28 AM
that really sucks though. hopefully you manage to find a job that you love in CS

Most astronomers start working at 35

oh man

@mochacat Hopefully

@mochacat no idea, as I don't need that trick xD

Oh, there's a joke about this
Which of the following is not like the rest?

1. An engineering degree
2. An astronomy PhD
3. A computer science degree
4. A large pizza

2:31 AM
the pizza right

Nope, it's #2

ahaha, I'm curious, what can come out of there? xD

All the others can feed a family of four

ahaha xD

wow that hits hard
LOL i kind of transitioned from super sad to laughter

2:32 AM
another sad fellow?

but what is astronomy anyway? like, will you explore mars or do you discover planets etc etc

@mochacat Well, exploring space in general is astronautics...

@Kelthar nah the joke is just a little depressing but mostly funny

Astronomy is the study of the universe, especially what is in space
Star evolution, galaxy formation, the origins and fate of the Universe, planetary motions, etc.

@mochacat just wondered because you said you we're said as well, was like, welcome to the cluv :P

2:34 AM
By studying space, you're basically studying how the universe works at the large scale

@SirCumference that sounds great. there's so much we don't know out there.

But is that in a more qualitative perspective, or more like Astrophysics?

@Kelthar Most people say astronomy and astrophysics are the same thing
They've historically had different meanings, but now they've generally become synonymous
@Kelthar Now I don't know much about engineering, but what would you need QM for?

@SirCumference as in quantum mechanics?

@mochacat Yep

2:43 AM
i have obviously stepped over the line of what i can understand again

@SirCumference hopefully another mean argument wont pop out of thin air since you said that

@Skyler Amen
@Skyler By the way, what are you majoring in?

@SirCumference im physics, why do you ask?

Just curious

im kinda curious, did you think I was a physics major
I've been here in h bar for quite a while

2:49 AM
Well it was my first guess

yea, default answer of people here
though i guess im physics + entrepreneurship minor (its a certificate program but really just about the same load as a minor)

Huh, what year?

im a couple of weeks into my last quarter

:O

@SirCumference I wanted to work in quantum computing... That's my first guess, as it's also my favourite (computing and etc)... and I think it really has the potential to do great things. then maybe nuclear fusion or AI
or something else energy related, like energy storage (which could also be a gamechanger), or improved solar cells, etc
but quantum computing is what excites me the most
3 am here, I'm just going to sleep. tiredness has overcome sadness so I'm ready to go
cya guys

3:03 AM
haha good night @Kelthar

thanks, 4u2

don't worry about the test too much. it's about what you learn and not about what you get on a test
i'm experienced in cheering myself up after a bad test. there's a lot of opportunities :P

5 hours later…
user228700
7:37 AM
@JohnR: Morning :-)

user228700
Gosh, why is this place so... dead?

Last night dream is a complicated time travel dream, which is too long to post here

user228700
@Secret Just as well, really. I'm already sort of hallucinating :-P (Not kidding)

user228700
@JohnR: How's it going?

Morning :-)
Yes it does seem awfully quiet hereabouts.

user228700
7:47 AM
@JohnRennie I've been asking about sleep/health so I think it's OK to assume that y'all might be interested to know what my B.P (I measured it today) is.

I guess so. Though does blood pressure have to do with sleeping?

user228700
It is s'posed to be 120/80 but mine is only 80/70 .__.

user228700
@JohnRennie Not very much but stress, perhaps?

That's good isn't it? It means your heart is in good condition.

user228700
Uh, no, it's s'posed to be 120|80 (This is not "120 out of 80", those two numbers measure two different parameters)

user228700
7:51 AM
But mine's 80|70

Yes. Trust me, when you get to be middle aged doctors start getting interested in your blood pressure and take it all the time :-)
Mine is (so far) boringly normal, which is just as well really :-)

user228700
:-) Sorry. But they weren't happy with my results--they're too low is what she said.

The point is that high blood pressure means you are at serious risk of heart attack or stroke, while low blood pressure may mean you faint easily but it isn't usually life threatening.
80/70 does seem very low though.

user228700
...right.

user228700
I fell ridiculously sick yesterday evening and it became worse in the morning, which is why I went.

7:55 AM
Are you getting enough iron in your diet?
With a vegetarian diet it's easy to become anemic if you're not careful.

user228700
Yes, I think so. The doctor adviced me to drink lots of fluids.

user228700
But I don't think I'm anemic. I eat a fair share of grean leafy veggies :-)

I have to admit I don't know what foods contain iron - apart from meat of course.

user228700
Grean leafy veggies, almonds, etc.

Did the doctor take a blood sample? I assume they'll test for anaemia.

user228700
7:58 AM
Peas. Whoa my God, I eat too much peas. I'm definitely not anemic.

Wow, I didn't realise almonds contain a lot of iron (John says having just Googled it). You learn something new every day.
You could have terminal heart disease I suppose, but on the bright side if you're about to drop dead you can stop revising :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie No, they didn't. I have sinusitis, a throat infection, low B.P, a mild fever and body pain, that's all :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie :-)

Of course what's more likely is that you work your socks off, get great marks, then drop dead on the day after the exam.

user228700
:-) Yes, that's definitely more likely.

8:01 AM
Some people just have low blood pressure.

user228700
What's up with u this morning?

My brother used to have very low blood pressure before he got middle aged and fat.
@Kaumudi.H I have to admit I'm sort of bored this morning.

user228700
Oh :-/ OK...

user228700
@JohnRennie :-P I see.

I went to the monthly book club meeting yesterday, and we always go for a drink or two afterwards.
So this morning I'm tired and not concentrating well.

user228700
8:03 AM
Oh .__. I see. Good meeting?

We discussed the book Tamed by Douglas R. Brown.
It was absolute rubbish and I though it would be a terrible meeting, but in fact it was a lively discussion about just how bad it was :-)
So it was actually a great meeting.

user228700
Haha, OK, that's nice :-)

user228700
It doesn't sound like complete rubbish :-/

@Kaumudi.H the book sounded good, which is why we chose it. But it's clumsily written and the plot is ridiculous. One of the group members said it was the worst book he had ever read. I wouldn't go quite that far, but it was pretty bad.

user228700
8:08 AM
@JohnRennie Did you write this? :-)

:-)
It certainly fits with my sense of humour.

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, I see :-/ It's in ur own town, this meeting?

Yes. Chester is a lot smaller than Chennai. The meeting was in the library in the centre of town. It took me about 30 minutes to walk there from my house.

user228700
Ah, u walk?

I usually cycle into town, but remember that I said we were going for a drink or, erm, two after the meeting? I decided that trying to cycle home might be risky :-)

user228700
8:11 AM
Oh, yes, OK :-)

user228700
When's spring?

On the way home I nipped into the supermarket and they had chocolate eclairs reduced to £0.26 so I had some chocolate eclairs to finish the evening. All very satisfactory :-)

user228700
Oh, that certainly sounds super :-) I don't reckon I've ever had chocolate eclairs.

An éclair is an oblong pastry made with choux dough filled with a cream and topped with icing. The dough, which is the same as that used for profiterole, is typically piped into an oblong shape with a pastry bag and baked until it is crisp and hollow inside. Once cool, the pastry is then filled with a vanilla-, coffee- or chocolate-flavoured custard (crème pâtissière), or with whipped cream, or chiboust cream; and then iced with fondant icing. Other fillings include pistachio- and rum-flavoured custard, fruit-flavoured fillings, or chestnut purée. The icing is sometimes caramel, in which case the...

user228700
Yes, I've seen pictures. It looks delicious!

8:14 AM
You have to try them. They are probably my favourite kind of cake.
Though now I think about it, the pastry contains egg.

user228700
I certainly will if I find them somewhere.

user228700
Nah, egg is fine in pastries...just not when I'm doing the cooking.

Chocolate, cream, pastry. With that combination it's hard to go wrong :-)

user228700
Not to be gross or anything, but I just threw up so I think I should eat lunch and take a nap. I didn't sleep at all last night and now I'm also sick. So...tired.

user228700

8:18 AM
Gosh, that doesn't sound good :-(
I hope you feel better after a nap.

user228700
Yes :-( I hope ur Sunday gets less boring. I'll be back in awhile. Thank you :-)

See you later ...

I think I am expecting a sequel dream to appear soon. Last night dream (which actually consists of two dreams, separated by a 4 hour sleep gap) are actually linked as the 2nd dream somewhat continue where the 1st dream left off. The reason the 2nd dream behave in a manner that can be called a continuation is because I was awake but tired for more than 1 minute to log down the 1st dream 4 hours ago in h bar.
This smashed the record for the duration awake and then went back to sleep where dream still managed to continues from the previous one
That means, should that duration get more than a day long in the future, then we will be expecting sequel dreams. If that's the case, I hope they continue the story of The Dtrix from a past dream 5 years ago cause I want to see the ending

Last night dream involving a crank textbook posting a bad PSE question about his book (which is some warped version of MTW gravitation). Acuriousmind and Johnrennie discussed it, which at the end of the conversation he allured to 3 banned users.

In the 2nd dream, 8- hours ago from now, the disussion continues with Dream Acuriousmind saying the following:

"there is no difference, as the ordering is unique. Therefore, one can rearrange the events so that they take the usual sequence"
Reality check: I have no idea from the top of my head whether that notion of a nonlinear continuum narrative that is mentioned in the dream make sense or not. Nonlinear narratives are already mind screwy enough to think about, let alone one in the continuum limit as if it is a smooth movie but with all infintesimal moments in time scrambled
To illustrate what it looks like consider a timeline with event labelled as follows:
1--2--3--4--5-- ...
This is the usual chronological ordering where 2 happens after 1 and 3 happens after 2 and so on
A nonlinear narrative is something resemble this:
e.g. 4--3--5--1--2--...
If we take the time interval between the events to be infinitesimal, in the first case we get a continuous time evolution of some event
The nonlinear continuum narrative explored in the dream, is basically the same idea applied to the 4--3--5--1--2-- thing above
So you basically have an event and its evolution being parametrised by a continuous parameter, but looks discontinuous from one moment to the next in its evolution

2 hours later…
10:28 AM
@JohnRennie I feel you.

@ACuriousMind :-)
Sunday mornings eh?:-)

Aye; I'm not feeling as if I'll get anything done today
Also, my room is littered with confetti. I haven't yet decided how I feel about that

10:56 AM
@ACuriousMind hungover? ;-)

3 hours later…
1:45 PM
@Kaumudi.H The cold?

user228700
@SirCumference Everything, man. I'm dying :'-(

user228700
^ Not literally.

@Kaumudi.H :(

user228700
How are u?

Pretty tired, otherwise good

user228700
1:47 PM
OK...hang on, you must've just woken up, no?

I woke up at 6:50am

user228700
What time is it now?

So about 2 hours ago

user228700
Oh, OK :-) No classes today?

Nope :)

user228700
1:49 PM
Nice. I hope u're able to get shit done :-P (Not that u don't or anything. Just, Sunday and all, so)

user228700
Wait, is today actually Sunday?!

user228700
Aw, crap.

What?

user228700
...what?

user228700
Oh, u mean, yeah, no, for awhile I was under the impression that it's Sunday without properly realising it.

1:53 PM
@Kaumudi.H Weekends are too fast.
Oh, gtg

@DanielSank Yes it is, Ubuntu is horrible.

user228700
Bye :-)

adios

@DanielSank The easy way is to partition the same drive and only have one EFI partition
@EmilioPisanty Thank you for that, I love bee movie memes
@mochacat Not true, Spanish is a horrible language
@Kelthar Try Antergos

2:06 PM
hello
@BernardoMeurer no it is not (says a user of Ubuntu =P)

@BernardoMeurer no it is not (says a user of Spanish =P)

@heather You're a summer child
(GOT reference)

@AccidentalFourierTransform Your brain has been melted by it

@BernardoMeurer vai-te foder

2:10 PM
No one hyphenates that

@BernardoMeurer yeah, I know, you mentioned it

@BernardoMeurer i'm learning spanish =)

@heather You're a disappointment

2:17 PM
it's not a horrible language any more than english is, i suppose
@BernardoMeurer i almost wish i did german, but my parents said spanish, so.
maybe i'll learn german on my own someday.
and don't say german is a horrible language too =P

@heather as a speaker of both Spanish and German, I can tell you that Spanish is incomparably more useful

German is a wonderful language
2

from a completely unbiased perspective, too

You will only use Spanish to talk to unwanted people

@EmilioPisanty i'll keep that in mind =)
its cool that so many people speak multiple languages here.

2:20 PM
@heather speaking multiple languages is the norm in many countries
don't let your surroundings fool you

@EmilioPisanty yeah, i know. just a lot of people i know don't.

US is a weird place

@heather cf. the surroundings bit ;-)

@BernardoMeurer it is rather wonky, yeah. only we would elect Trump and speak only one language

2:21 PM
Old news

@heather don't think too much of yourselves, either. People like Trump get elected all the time in Africa.

Q: Hardware interfacing under UEFI/BIOS

Bernardo MeurerUsually upon plugging in for the first time a USB drive in Windows a "Installing Device" dialog pops up to inform you that the needed drivers to use that device are being installed. There is just one problem: Travelling to the future is possible as experimentally demonstrated by twin paradox type experiment. If time is really, as what muller's model suggest, is constantly being created, then these experiments should not be possible at all

@EmilioPisanty i stated that as a negative thing...

Something I dreamt about

2:23 PM
@heather yeah, just having yet another dig at your expense =P.

@EmilioPisanty lol, okay
bet you can't come up with any jokes about Iowa without looking it up, though.

Iowa is too boring to have jokes about it

@BernardoMeurer hey! actually, there are some pretty funny ones.

@heather is that the state that's so flat you can see clear across the state?

You know what an Iowan says at New Years?
"I miss work"

2:24 PM
if you put up a ladder so you can see above the corn fields, that is

@EmilioPisanty noooo, that's Nebraska!
Iowa has hills and stuff.

Nebraiowa

@heather when you say "hills"

Nebraska, now that's the state you never, ever want to drive through ::winces::
@EmilioPisanty i mean hills, not rises in elevation of a foot or less =P
@BernardoMeurer we have our fun, just like anyone else =)

Q: i tryied my bes level plese your help more valuable for me

Vijay B r i tried my best to solve this question please help me to solve this questions

^"i tryied my bes" - please, spellcheck

@heather honey, nobody else harvests corn for fun

2:30 PM
@heather downvote to oblivion
also close

downvoted, cause he reminds of help vampires

@AccidentalFourierTransform dude, the whole state isn't just corn! there are cities and things to do! and there are also soybeans =P

@heather when you say "cities"

2:35 PM
'cause I find cities ten times the size of Des Moines to still be pretty small
@Secret nice, but it's got nothing on the wandering rocks of racetrack playa

I am too lazy to dig google up the videos that showcase the animation on how it works, though

@Secret no, they don't glide on ice. Ice floes form around them, the wind moves the ice with the rocks embedded, then the ice melts.

ok slight memory error, but yes

@EmilioPisanty look, i get you've lived, in, like, megamegamegamegalopolises, but Des Moines isn't tiny

BTW, I guess the (ex-)grad-student population of this chatroom isn't around, but this is relevant (also horrifying):

2:40 PM
it's a smaller city compared to berlin or something like that, but it still isn't tiny.

@heather =P j/k
you live in Des Moines?
somebody go star that on the ivory tower, maybe?

@EmilioPisanty geesh
@EmilioPisanty a suburb of des moines, yes.

@heather yeah, I know. It's the worst I've ever heard on that front.

Apparently, German is a wonderful language but it has mental health problems

@AccidentalFourierTransform what's that even mean?
unless you mean that Germans themselves are a little bit too northern european for their own good, in which case, yes

2:50 PM
31 mins ago, by Bernardo Meurer
German is a wonderful language
"The officers made German lie down on a stretcher, and an ambulance carried him to a hospital."

lol

@EmilioPisanty It is kinda hard to figure out the truth of that one, but so far the descriptions in that article suggest Rubin is guilty of misconduct. Why he action against German will involve a mental assessment is just... weird. But if the truth involve a bit of both sides, then this case would get nasty very quickly
(anyway, I should not speculate, I have zero experience with laws)

@AccidentalFourierTransform oh, yeah, I geddit. d'oh.

@heather German is quite cool, I learned it a bit. I like the fact that you can make words xD
Though yes, Spanish will probably be more helpful, mainly outside of Europe, unless you're a user of german eBay like me xD

@Secret how is it not already nasty? Either way, when things look this strange, there's a bunch that we don't know, so yeah, it's pretty pointless to speculate. But it's one to keep tabs on, particularly if there's more information after legal proceedings unwind.

2:55 PM
Plus Germans usually can speak English, while the same can't be said for the average Spanish, from experience xD

Much like the Sheri Shangji case, say.
@Kelthar yeah, pretty much completely true.

@EmilioPisanty the Sheri Shangji case? ::googles::

(one possibility might be because I am shocked at the degree of nasty so much that like people repressing truama, I suddnely become numb to the nastiness, and lead to the next statement of mine where nasty is based relative to this new reference baseline)

@heather Wikipedia has a reasonable summary (I think?), but it doesn't really capture how much of an impact it made on the broader chemistry community

@EmilioPisanty oh, i think i read about that at one point (skimmed wikipedia)

2:59 PM
(My emotions tend to suffer from spontaneous renormalisation when it gets too intense too quickly)

@heather try google.co.uk/… for a sense of the reaction
Also, if you're looking for fun reads, try the Things I won't work with and Things I'm glad I don't do columns there.

@EmilioPisanty at least youre from Mexico, I guess most people there speak English. Here in Spain it is really hard to find someone who speaks proper English.
it's like we refuse to speak English

@AccidentalFourierTransform 'most people speak English' is a socioeconomic-context-dependent statement
@AccidentalFourierTransform that one is true, though.

@EmilioPisanty well, I say that because I'm sure that there is a strong influence coming from the US

@AccidentalFourierTransform! I think that something that really gives the Spanish people English speaking rate is the fact that everything is translated
I mean, dubbed
And they get very little exposure to english

@Kelthar by Spanish you mean from Spain, right?

In Germany they dub everything as well, but they don't appear to be so affected, maybe due to the similarity between German and English

because in south A. everything is original language with subtitles

@AccidentalFourierTransform yes xD

3:09 PM
@Kelthar well yeah, here in Spain you have to go to special theatres to find films in their original language
also, for many people here it is "uncool" to pronounce the words correctly
idk, we're weird sometimes

I just realized that autocorrect killed the sense in my former statement. I meant "(...) That really hinders the Spanish people's English speaking rate (...)"

@AccidentalFourierTransform not quite. Cinemas are mostly subtitled, but open TV is dubbed, at least in Mexico.

@EmilioPisanty disclaimer: I don't know how it works in Mexico xD just in Spain

@EmilioPisanty huh, I was misinformed then
a friend of mine from Argentina told me that most tv shows are subtitled

cable TV is dubbed in Mexico
but, say, Televisa and TV Azteca are not
@AccidentalFourierTransform I can't speak for the rest of Latin America, though
in fact we're pretty much the dubbing factory for most of latin america

@AccidentalFourierTransform Ugh.

@JohnRennie Did you get a chance to test out the amp?

@ACuriousMind to make you feel better: why don't ants get sick?

@AccidentalFourierTransform Heh

@Secret thx for sharing, very interesting! sounds like a nearly direct experimental confirmation of tenev-horstemeyer "space time fabric" to me but ofc very few )( others will see it that way... arxiv.org/abs/1603.07655
> What actually is a photon? Concerning the last question, that much is clear to the Konstanz physicists: instead of a quantized packet of energy it is rather a measure for the local quantum statistics of electromagnetic fields in space-time. sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170118132244.htm

Hi

@BernardoMeurer I wasn't going to test it. If I can find a box I'll just put it in the post and you can have a play when you get it. I'll try and find a box in the next few days.

@JohnRennie Sounds great, thanks! :)
