IBM can't even make a good classical computer...

user54412
Also, I thought they were bought out by Lenovo.

@ChrisWhite They sold their PC and laptop business, but kept the mainframes and the research stuff for themselves.

user54412
Ah.

And my wife had an early thinkpap that was a tank. Later models didn't wear as well.
But they kept costing more than the competition so we quit buying them.

user54412
The mainframes are the ones that make me sad nowadays. After being spoiled by Intel chips, IBM (and everyone else) just seems 10 years out of date.

1:17 AM
@ChrisWhite Instruction sets not providing the level of control you want?

user54412
From branch prediction to out-of-order instructions to cache management to just plain ignoring those empty loops you forced into the code to slow it down, Intel does it all. And apparently no one else can quite figure it out.

user54412
Basically their hardware does another level of optimization beyond the compiler.

user54412
But there are exceedingly few big clusters that are Intel based. They're all IBM, Cray, or GPU.

user54412
I guess the others are more cost effective or something, but it's cruel to know there is such amazing technology out there and not be able to use it where performance matters most.

The little clusters that some of my postdoc bosses ran were all linuc PC's.

user54412
1:22 AM
@HDE226868 Are you one of the ones engaging in all the edits on the wiki page? ;)

Sometimes even in the form of desktops, thought the bigger and beter ones were rack mounted.

@ChrisWhite Quoting you on this matter "ICC16 can probably solve the halting problem"

@ChrisWhite No; I wasn't aware of that! I came across it thanks to two questions on Worldbuilding, where nobody really understands it, either. :P
I have received warnings about vandalism being done by someone with my IP address, though, so maybe I'm sleep-editing. Scary thought.

user54412
@BernardMeurer If it can't, the Skylake i7 can.

I was very amazed by what the ICC did on that branch prediction case, it was pretty cool

user54412
1:28 AM
@HDE226868 I think the issue with the blurry line is that deuterium and lithium fusion aren't too powerful, so even with them gravitational contraction (or maybe compositional rearrangement a la Saturn?) can be more important.

user54412
Or at least I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

@ChrisWhite You have to figure that a little thing like that could pump out Virial heat for a long time before it cooled appreciably, so knowing the difference has got to be tricky.

@ChrisWhite I always forget how important contraction is at those scales.

@ChrisWhite When you start messing with optimization you begin to see how far behind AMD really is

user54412
@HDE226868 Have you read the Nature paper‌?

1:40 AM
@ChrisWhite particlezoo.net
Have you seen this yet?
This one in particular

user54412
That's the cutest CMB map I've ever seen certainly

Isn't it cool? I've been wanting to get one

@ChrisWhite I looked at the abstract, but was stopped by the paywall. I did find a different source, though, that might be the same version.

What's the difference between a hypothetical particle and a theoretical particle?

user54412
@HDE226868 Yeah, that looks like a preprint. In any event, it's a Nature paper, so probably wrong in some significant way.

user54412
1:45 AM
But note how they gave up on deciding if it was a brown dwarf or not.

"brown dwarf" sounds like a very racist name

user54412
They report $0.080 \pm 0.009\ M_\odot$ as the mass

@ChrisWhite Just using the phrase "ultracool dwarf" seemed like a cop-out.

ultracool dwarf is a nice name

user54412
well it is cool :)

user54412
1:47 AM
even iron wouldn't melt on its surface, to say nothing of tungsten

user54412
as in, you could sci-fi up some story about a civilization living on the surface

@ChrisWhite BTW you owe me money
you addicted me to chocolate coffee beans
Why have you forsaken me @ChrisWhite?

user54412
because your heart is with ACM and his trivia now

user54412
I wonder if anyone makes chocolate covered, cocaine dusted coffee beans, especially in South America
2

But..but there's space for both of you!
@ChrisWhite Oh god WHAT HAVE YOU JUST DONE

2:14 AM
@BernardMeurer <3

@DanielSank! <3

Come hang out.

Literally or digitally? Or both?
Also, refresh my memory, is the road from LA to SB flat?

user54412
what a strange question

@ChrisWhite I remember it being super pretty, so I wanted to bike the way there. It's about 100miles which I do at least once a month but I don't remember if I have to go by any hills or things like that

user54412
2:22 AM
I think it's pretty flat, just really curvy and indirect

That's alright, I'm high endurance low performance in biking:p
Like most other things in my life apparently :v

user54412
When I visited SB I had a 10 mile, hilly commute by bike. Nearly killed me.

@ChrisWhite I'm on a 50 miles daily bike routine :D

user54412
@BernardMeurer In the first world, we have machines take us places :p

@ChrisWhite Hahaha, do you have machines that make you tan and fit yet? :p
Because my biking literally takes me nowhere

user54412
2:29 AM
Tan: yes.

user54412
@BernardMeurer I'm pretty convinced Californians don't actually go anywhere in their cars either. They just drive for the sake of clogging up roads.

Haha, yeah there was a lot of traffic when I was there
but still a bliss next to Rio's roads

@BernardMeurer There is a part where you go over a small mountain.
Very small.
On bike it would be arduous.
But people do it.

@DanielSank Grab your car wait me there, get me over the mountain and we meet at SB :p

@BernardMeurer k

2:35 AM
Oh no you didn't just 'k' me

Actually, you on a bike has a higher probability of making the trip to L.A. than does my car.
@BernardMeurer Uh... is that bad?

@DanielSank Every time I received a 'k' from a girl it ended up horribly; I'm still deciding what it means for other people
Ha, I remember my first comment when I came in the lab was "Hey, cool bike" to which you replied "Nah, it's a piece of crap"; Do you not have any good means of transportation?

@BernardMeurer Are you trying to get my to go home with you?
@BernardMeurer yeah.... at the moment my transportation options are crap.

@DanielSank You're an engaged man!

@BernardMeurer Yes.
How's Isabel?

2:38 AM
I'd only do that if you had very large breasts
Okay, nevermind that was unethical
and immoral

Not really immoral... people can choose however they want.

She's alright, we've been talking a lot and she's surprisingly nice
I have trouble engaging in long conversations, I get distracted and drop random comments, she seems to rather enjoy that

Your sense of humor is awesome.

Unless you're referring to the de facto Isabel who, last time I checked, was very octopussy
Ha, that word worked out nice

heheh

2:40 AM
@DanielSank Thanks! That's generally a controversial subject

Well, you take my jokes without explicitly acknowledging them. I appreciate that a lot.
hmmm, why is the "thonk" ping sound on SE chat so incredibly unceremonious?

Oh god, I just got blueberry juice all over my white pajamas
This will be hard to explain in the morning

@BernardMeurer Take that.

Ouch, my ears

@BernardMeurer Really?
Can't you say "I spilled blueberry juice"?
You explained it to me rather effectively.

2:43 AM
@DanielSank My mother last saw me at 10:30 PM when I said goodnight and there was no juice in this house

@BernardMeurer I see.

I left home at night in the rain to buy blueberry juice because I had an inner craving
that'll be hard to explain :p

"I went and purchased blueberry juice. Then I spilled it."
?

I'm glad I'm not a woman, I'd be so weird during pregnancy
@DanielSank We're brazilians, that's not how it works :p

@BernardMeurer You don't trade money for goods and services?

2:45 AM
Hahaha, with our current currency value I'd say we trade monopoly money for goods and services
It's just unusual to leave home after 10:00 here, it's somewhat dangerous where I live
specially to buy juice
and it's kind of a far walk
but IDK my brain said bed but my heart said juice
and I'm a romantic

hahahahaha
Well my heart said tomatoes and chick peas, so that's what's on the stove.

Ah, chick peas, those make a funny sound when you eat them
I like that

They do?

Idk, in my head they do
That doesn't mean much though, a lot of stuff happens there
Isn't this just dancy as hell?
Oh, and Dan, on the good news side of things, I just passed to the third phase of that full coverage 'wherever you go' scholarship program; after the interview Friday there's only one left for me to get in :)

@BernardMeurer Wow!

2:55 AM
@DanielSank Pretty neat right? This blueberry is well deserved
also on related news I'm now 18 and a big boy

@BernardMeurer yep
By the way, I was just watching the 3-way standoff scene from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly when you pinged me.
I almost jumped out of my chair.
@BernardMeurer Hahaha, you want a cookie?

Hahahaha I'm telling you this ping is from hell

@BernardMeurer Depends how you. Most routes have at least one good sized hill, and some have several. I think sticking with the coast highway might be the best bet for avoiding hills, but it'll put you in some narrow places without proper bike lanes and with manic drivers.

@DanielSank I'll take a cookie :)

Of course you will.
Cookies are awesome.

2:57 AM
YES, and tremendously hard to find around here! Quality ones at least

eh?
You mix sugar, eggs, flour, etc. in a bowl and then bake it.
It's pretty quick.

@dmckee Nice tip! I bike on Rio de Janeiro's traffic though, I think I can take a CA road :p
@DanielSank The only thing I can cook are bad jokes and explosions

I see.
Try making scrambled eggs to start.
You should move to CA.
I'll show you how to cook.

I can make fried eggs!

@BernardMeurer ok, then graduate to cookies.

2:59 AM
They're not good but my cousin ate them once
I know I should! I'm working on it, if the scholarship doesn't go through there's another guy who offered to sponsor half my tuition

How much dynamic range is there in fried eggs quality?
@BernardMeurer Nice.

@DanielSank Quite a lot, taste mine and my grandmothers and you'll see
from Lil'Wayne to Mozart
Actually I'll change that, to Ravel, I like him better

This is going to sound slightly dumb...
Mozart is incredible.
Really, truly amazing.

Why is that dumb?

Well, because I think a lot of people would say it's obvious.
Anyway, there are very few pieces of music I listen to without disagreeing with some parts.

3:04 AM
He is incredible, and is certainly one of the greatest composers of all times

But Mozart... everything is just right.

That doesn't make it less true :D

I have no disagreement with anything in his music.

That's Grieg for me

He embellishes without sounding tacky.

3:05 AM
Ah, Morgenstimmung

It's just amazing.

What a piece
I like Mozart's Piano Concertos a lot
20 and 22 specially

I listen to them, thanks.
I don't often listen to piano music.

You like orchestral? String Quartet?
Flute solo?
Hand clapping rap?

Flute is a wonderful instrument.
I like most music. Opera not as much.

3:07 AM
It really is, my grandfather plays it

I'm not usually too inclined toward vocals and opera sort of relies on it.

I only like Wagner's stuff in Opera
Yep, same thing, not a fan of vocals

I played this for a while with a flute playing friend of mine.

I'm so obsessed with Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé I have 3, 4th on the way, different recordings of it

@BernardMeurer Ok I have to write this all down.

3:09 AM
That reminds me of Brazilian classical compositions
It's a lot like that one
Didn't know you played the guitar

yes
I'm not good anymore because I haven't played in several years.
I used to be reasonably ok.

Flute is one of those really awesome instruments that's unique and has no crappy aspects.

If this stands to show anything, word analysis on my library :p

It shows you listen to classical music.
heh

3:11 AM
Same with me but Piano

ehhhhhh
Ok, I'm not criticizing your tastes, please remember that... I'm just voicing my opinion.
The piano has a lot of sound, probably because of how the hammers work, that seems to get in the way of the notes.

What? You don't like exactly what I like? I'm sorry I don't think we can be friends anymore
You mellon
:)

@BernardMeurer mellon? What?
Braziallian slang?

@DanielSank Nope, just my awkwardly specific memory at work
Apr 15 at 5:42, by DanielSank
Hey, @BernardMeurer, you're a mango. Ha, take that.

I also just... I think a lot of piano players just sort of bang out the notes without giving the music texture, and for some reason this is considered "good" in the piano world.
@BernardMeurer Hahaha, nice.

3:13 AM
I remember all these things, I'm weird like that :p
It's a virtuoso thing, banging notes like a mechanical man
Some like it some hate it
I think soul is what set's western pianists apart from eastern ones (rough generalization of course)

Wait a minute... eastern pianists?
wut?

Here in the West, specially Europe, there's less value to the 'mechanical' precision of the piece
IMHO of course
Yeah yeah, Russians, Ukrainians, Chinese
They generally have a school of thought in piano more towards precision than interpretation
Check the song I just shared to your drive for example, what makes it great is the interpretation work put into it
It'd be hard to find some virtuoso that would play that well

Q: How to delete a question

WhatAQuestionI want to delete my question Area as a Vector But i am not able to delete it? How to do that?

Installing VLC...
@BernardMeurer found a reddit thread about the best scenes in movie history. Watching on youtube. So far they're really good.

Do link!

3:19 AM
The stand off I told you about, Maximus's reveal in Gladiator.

My favorite is by far the ending scene of Dr.Strangelove

@BernardMeurer That movie is so weird.

that made me cry, and that rarely happens with movies

@BernardMeurer oh wow
I wasn't really into it when I watched it. Might have been a defense against getting too depressed.

@DanielSank I get attached to weird things
The song man, that song
It has a very special meaning to me
Which I can explain if I have a beer one day :D
Watching Il Triello

3:23 AM
@BernardMeurer Have you seen the film?
That scene is awesome in context.

@DanielSank Not yet sadly, I'm going to tomorrow though
What a scene!
and the music too!

yeah
don't watch the end!
zomg if you haven't seen the movie stop!!!!!

OKAY OKAY
I stopped before the end
Oh yes the Gladiator one is great

yeah
I think I'll watch that film again.

I was thinking the same thing!
This one is damn good too

3:31 AM
Yeah, that's a classic.

Lectures was the wrong folder :p I shared the right one now
Lectures are well, lectures, by Simon Rattle on how to play Sibelius' symphonies

I'm trying to figure out how to share google photos with you without sharing all of them or making them public

Select the ones you want
then click right click and share

If I do that I get an option to give out a link.
That means anyone with the link can view.
I don't want that.

What about the "more options" button?

3:35 AM
I want it to work more like Google Drive where I can set who is allowed to access the link.

Wait aren't we talking about google drive?

Not quite.
The photos program is separate.

Picasa?

It's not called that any more, but yes.

I think you click "New shared album"?
Nope
That makes a link
Bloody hell google

3:41 AM
They usually have reasons when stuff is dumb like this.
Sometimes the reason has to do with technical problems and some times it's because of user experience trade-offs.
If you think about it, the way Drive works is awesome and kind of unique.
I think you can share photos with specific people via Google+.

I think you can via G+ yes
Drive is AMAZING

Is it a single photo of food?

Yes.
@BernardMeurer Yeah, it's basically Unix permissions over the internet.

That looks very tasty

3:45 AM
@BernardMeurer Just made it. It's so good.

@DanielSank yes, hadn't thought of that before
What's that background?

@BernardMeurer My table cloth.
I've been making my apartment look nicer recently.

I was about to say, It's very pretty

Thanks!

Doesn't getting married automagically do that for you?

3:49 AM
heheheh, perhaps.
Here, I'll show you some more random photos... one moment.

I'm only getting married when I need furniture

@BernardMeurer This is nice, I'm learning how Google photos works.
Check your email. You should have a link.
I guess the links can be considered cryptographically unguessable, but I'd rather my cryptographic tokens not be transferable!

Yep, just got it

Capabilities model, remember! That's what we want!!! Capabilities should not be automatically transferable.

That butterfly one is cool!
YES!

3:53 AM
@BernardMeurer I grow butterflies.
When they're in season.

Oh I have a story you'll like

A lot of them died this year.
They got a fungus or something.

Is that snow one a little after I visited?
Yikes, that's a shame!

@BernardMeurer No that was many years ago.

Dat mug tho

3:54 AM
YES!

Damn I like your view
Isabel!

It's so awesome. It looks like the octopus is tasting the beer!

THAT FOOD OMG

Actually, that is Lauralie, in Baltimore.

THAT FOOD OMG²

3:55 AM
@BernardMeurer Yeah bro. Cooking is legit.

Some cows
THAT FOOD³

@BernardMeurer In Davis California. Drove up there with friend.

Ah, I had heard that UCD smelt like cow dung

Hmmmm, most of my photos are food...
Interesting.

Tells something about you hahaha
You should be fat, this is unfair
God why have you forsaken my metabolism
And the butterfly thing was just that I once went to a MASSIVE butterfly vivarium

3:57 AM
@BernardMeurer I eat mostly healthy stuff, and then a lot of chocolate.
@BernardMeurer Oh yeah? Cool!

Yeah it was amazing man! I had never seen so many butterflies

It's hard to get fat if you cook your own food.
This is five minutes from my apartment.
Look at the photo gallery.

Damn the pictures are so cool
Yep, hahaha
Very cool
Is SB housing expensive?

@BernardMeurer Depends.
Most of it is.

Dang it

4:03 AM
But, if you're patient and friendly you can share a nice house and pay maybe $500 per month, which is perfectly fine on a grad student stipend.

500 sounds reasonable

It is but that's the lowest you'll ever find.
You can share a perfectly good apartment with one other person and pay $800 per month.
In a nice neighborhood, close to the beach.

That sounds better
I like to swim at night a lot when I'm anxious
so basically every day
IF I get that scholarship I'll have a considerable amount of extra money
the people I know who got it live very well (for a student)

@BernardMeurer Nice.

user116211
@DanielSank @BernardMeurer o//

4:08 AM
If I get that I'm going to dance so much
@MAFIA36790 o/

user116211
It was fun starring ACM @bernard ;P

user116211
ohhh... Danu :(

@MAFIA36790 I like the new daily trivia that is going on

ok guys, I'm out. ciao

user116211
4:09 AM
@BernardMeurer That has been turned to a daily ritual ;D

user116211
@DanielSank o/

Yep :D

Oh no, it has become an infinitely recursive function
Well it's time to go to bed now
@DanielSank I'll see if I can show up on SB this year again, probably so :)
Goodnight!

5:04 AM
@ChrisWhite: that's a great answer. I have to confess that when I sat down to answer yesterday evening I couldn't be bothered to write at anything approaching that length.

user54412
@JohnRennie You've caught me avoiding work I see.

user54412
I'm actually somewhat surprised how effective it is.

@Danu Honestly, it's not worth it. What I meant by my answer was your question is crap but here's the way to think about it if you're really interested. However I'm not sure the message got through.
As for the effect of the HNQ, look no farther than this rather obvious answer currently at 116 upvotes.
Or this answer about a chair at 196, yes that's 196 upvotes. But maybe I'm being elitist here - if people enjoy reading an answer why shouldn't they upvote it?
@ChrisWhite I started work 20 minutes ago, but haven't done any yet :-)

5:29 AM
Hello
Well you can't do shit with a Higgs boson, but a chair you can sit on

5:41 AM
@Slereah lolol
Who wants to help me understand debian/Ubuntu package management?

Probably the dorks at the linux SE

@Slereah well yeah
You guys are more fun though.

We are too cool to know about Linux, though

wut?
where the heck is the thing with favorited questions?

Thanks
