what a deal only $37
I will buy it to read in the future.
lol the price changed O.o

@3075 someone probably bought the last copy
might be someone in the chat

I did.
$37 and free shipping.
@0celo7 do you know that book by any chance?
it claims to avoid using conformal field theory.
is that bad?
If that's a deal breaker I can cancel my order xD

why are you asking me

because you did st.

no
I read a book
and forgot all of it

12:59 AM
btw do you plan to ever learn it again?

no, why would I?

idk

@BernardMeurer Very nice.

@DanielSank <3
Oh, and I shared your chili recipe with her, I hope you don't mind, she loved it

Does anyone here like Fire Emblem games?

1:04 AM
@0celo7 I played the gameboy one and liked it

@BernardMeurer Who is Isabel?

@0celo7 Someone me and Daniel know in a sense

@0celo7 BBS has free online string theory lectures from the authors, which I found.

@BernardMeurer Someone you met in SB?

@0celo7 No, no, I only met bearded grad students in SB :p

1:13 AM
@BernardMeurer I think I have that one somewhere...
I didn't like it when I was 7

@0celo7 Not much of a games person lately. Even pokemon that I bloody loved wasn't fun the last one I played
Omega Ruby was the name I think

@BernardMeurer Let's see, I'm currently playing...Smash Bros 3DS, Pokemon X, Pokemon OR, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Yellow, Majora's Mask
Although I haven't touched OR in a week

you guys have to play cave story.

@3075 I played half an hour once
didn't catch me
but again, I'm very picky

it's awesome
first cave is boring, i feel you.
but after that it's really cool.
and... it's free and 1mb.

1:21 AM
@BernardMeurer you are in error.
Play that game.
Now.

@DanielSank I bought Pokemon Yellow instead of Super Metroid

@0celo7 That too, was an error.

@DanielSank Cavestory?

@BernardMeurer Yeah. It's excellent.

@DanielSank Alright I'll give it a try

1:22 AM
<3

@DanielSank Also, I should deliver this to you "You're a genius"

@BernardMeurer Oh?

@DanielSank She likes your chili

@BernardMeurer Is he loyal too?

@0celo7 LOL

1:24 AM
That's because:
1) It's the best chili ever invented.
2) She has good taste.

@DanielSank It doesn't have meat lol

@0celo7 She's a vegetarian?

@BernardMeurer Ask Michelle what Ron thinks about chili without meat

Is Cave Story+ the same as Cave Story
@0celo7 Will

@BernardMeurer Not quite.
Cave Story was an independently created game, released for free.

1:25 AM
@DanielSank I haven't even tried it yet :v Can't find squash. But she guarantees it's great. She criticized the picture though, said it didn't do it justice

It was so successful that it was later released on Nintendo (I think) platforms as Cave Story +.

@DanielSank Because I have Cave Story + on steam

@BernardMeurer I don't understand.
@BernardMeurer Ah yes, so it was Steam and I think some Nintendo systems.

@BernardMeurer oh it's only an hd version of it.

@DanielSank Regarding chili

1:26 AM
but it's like $17

How can she guarantee it's great if she hasn't tried it?

@DanielSank She has, she made it yesterday

@BernardMeurer Ohhhhhh.

@DanielSank BM hasn't had it yet
I retract that vine.

1:27 AM
@DanielSank :)

@BernardMeurer If she says the pic isn't good enough, please ask her for a better one.

@DanielSank Will do

Holy shit! My culinary influence has spread to Brazil! I'm an international success!
This makes me more influential as a chef than as a physicist!

@DanielSank Hahahaha, yep you are

:)

1:28 AM
@DanielSank Well, that's expected considering the fact that the number of people who will like chili is much larger than those who will like experimental quantum devices :p

@Tesseract \o

@BernardMeurer Yeah. Maybe I should switch career.

@DanielSank Don't! It's a way better bar story for me to say I have a friend who's a quantum physicist than that I have a friend who makes chili

@Bernard :)

@BernardMeurer Hmmm, I could still do quantum physics as a hobby.

1:31 AM
@DanielSank Fair enough :)
@Tesseract Heya
@DanielSank You'll be like Tsiolkovsky who built the first aerospacial lab in Russia; on his apartment

@BernardMeurer Yes but in my case it will be a portal to another galaxy.

@DanielSank Will it run Linux?

@Bernard Hopefully.
Only thing I'll understand.

@DanielSank I want to tell my kids I installed Linux on a trans-galactic portal

@BernardMeurer Uh... my intergalactic portals don't run conventional operating systems.
@BernardMeurer Hm, ok I'll make the required modifications.

1:35 AM
@DanielSank Awesome :D

:)

2:27 AM
@DanielSank I've never played Metroid

2:41 AM
@BernardMeurer Super Metroid is, in my opinion, the best video game ever made.

@DanielSank I'll try to get it for my ds then
Playing cave story now
this is difficult

Q: What format should we use for Physics Stack Exchange AMA's?

DanielSankThere's been talk in the hbar of starting an "Ask me Anything" (AMA) series in which featured guests would answer questions from other users. These questions would be about physics, the guest's career, or anything else. What format would work well for a Physics Stack Exchange AMA?

@vzn

how goes your day

@PhysicsMeta Go home, meta. You're drunk.
I already said that. Look five comments up.
Jeez.

@DanielSank No, you're drunk.
Meta posts all meta posts so there was no reason for you to post it.
Post is a funny word.

@0celo7 I don't think I'm drunk.

@DanielSank You're drunker than meta, that's for sure.

2:56 AM
@0celo7 hm, strange.
Probably true since a website can't really be drunk.

@DanielSank You're not drunk? That's not a good idea!

@PhysicsMeta I would go with the interview style for it would be a mess if questions are imposed on the very moment of the session.... how many can you answer? You are answering and another one is asking; still another one is asking..... that would be a complete mess. I deem a confluence of interview style and on-spot style questioning would be better:

user116211
Questions (technical and or relevant questions to the guest's work) are to be taken prior to the session; guest would decide what he would answer; and questions can be asked at the session also but one question at a time unless the guest passes it or answers it. There would be a discipline then.... although everything hinges on how many users gather at the session.

user116211
@DanielSank@BernardMeurer Morning.

@MAFIA36790 Howdy

@BernardMeurer noted ;)

3:22 AM
@DanielSank: I'm sure a flexible interview style would be good. However, I'm thinking of having another meta post where it would explicitly be described what the point of Physics AMA is and to what extent the questions should be technical and also there might be a chance to post any good technical question at the main site if the guest and the community deem it apt enough.... so, much more planning left; I would consider it later on discussion with DZ and also you :)

3:39 AM
@MAFIA36790 I think once a format is selected we should just go ahead and try a session. If the interview style is voted up (as it is right now) then we'll be able to see what questions people are interested in ahead of time.

HHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY In case anyone was concerned, I just wanted to announce that I spent yesterday and today teaching myself why I was an idiot concerning the cft question, and spent some time learning the damn thing. The major block was new words for old things, some notation I was not aware of. I was not an idiot, just a victim of being assumed by most "texts" to be aware of what they mean. Fixed it! It is like when I first picked up some text and kept reading
contract or trace over, and had no idea what was going on, or trying to follow new notation concerning partial derivatives etc, and thinking it was advanced math. Anyways . . . .
cheers!

@TerryBollinger Kerbals are the hapless beings one tries to shoot into space in Kerbal Space Program.

@MAFIA36790 Hi :-)

@JohnRennie Do you have any opinion on Physics AMA?

I don't think it will work well, but I also think it's worth a try.

Hi guys! what do you think the term "Conservative Bound" means? The context is the estimating of constraints on beyond standard model effective theories

@FrancescoS A "conservative" bound is one that was gained from "conservative" interpretations of some results, or using "well-established" data rather than newer and/or unsecure data. It mostly means that the bound is probably looser than one could make it.
It's a "conservative estimate", one that errs on the side of caution instead of risking to over-constrain the models

@ACuriousMind what do you mean with" conservative interpretations of some results"?

@FrancescoS An interpretation that is cautious, and only differs prior ones where the results firmly back it up. Essentially, "no speculation".
Does your native language not have an equivalent to the phrase "conservative estimate"? (German has)

The Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den (simplified Chinese: 施氏食狮史; traditional Chinese: 施氏食獅史; pinyin: Shī Shì shí shī shǐ; literally: "The Story of Shi Shi Eating Lions") is a modern poem composed of 92 characters written in Classical Chinese by Yuen Ren Chao (1892–1982), in which every syllable has the sound shi (bearing different tones) when read in modern Mandarin Chinese. It is a noted example of a one-syllable article, a form of constrained writing unique to Chinese. == Explanation == Classical Chinese is a written language and is very different from spoken Chinese. 1:46 PM
@ACuriousMind Italian has an equivalent but I am not sure the meaning is the same

A one-syllable article (Chinese: 同音文章; pinyin: Tóngyīn wénzhāng) is a type of constrained writing found in Chinese literature. They take advantage of the large number of homophones in the Chinese language, particularly when writing in Classical Chinese (due to historic sound changes). Although a one-syllable article's characters have many different meanings, they are all pronounced as the same syllable, although not necessarily with the same tone. Therefore, a one-syllable article is comprehensible in writing, but becomes an incomprehensible tongue twister when read aloud, especially in Mandarin...

@Secret please, what is the sense of your posts?

So I am guessing, somewhen since 0celo7 previous absence, the rules of h bar must have been overhaled. That might be the reason why I am seeing a lot less non physics related chat posts compared to the "0celo7 era"

If that's the case then, fine I will stop

@Secret What? There's no rule against non-physics. Francesco was just wondering why you decided to post that now
He hasn't been here often enough to know you always post random stuff :P

well, I am doing just what you guys sometime did at around 12:00 pm in h bar, sharing and posting random stuff and videos etc.

@ Acuriousmind ok that explains it...

1:57 PM
However I do notice the frequency of random stuff decreased a lot during the time when 0celo7 first gone absent (just an interesting observation)

You noticed that the frequency of stuff decreased when one of the most prolific posters got banned? Your bar for "interesting" observations seems rather low :P

@Secret I was trying to understand why chinese posts ahha don't worry

Well, the decrease in random stuff is is not just due to 0celo7, but a couple others including slereah, accidentalfouriertransform (and 3 other guys who likes to frequent this chat at around noon in european countries). One notable thing is the almost absence of youtube videos that is not related to physics during that period

@FrancescoS well, chinese is a weird language that does a lot of weird things. You will get to know about it better as time went by

and acuriousmind is right, I am kinda weird when I don't have physics questions at hand (and when I do have question at hand, I often s
yesterday, by vzn
hi @Slereah congratulations youre confirmed 16:00 UTC Tue Jun14th =D ... alas may not be available myself (will do my best to be there!) so ask you to lead it if not there. can come up with a list of questions/ topics together if you like, also with input of others, although we already brainstormed a bit about CTCs + interstellar etc.
Hmm... looks like some chance to learn a lot of stuff
I am also guessing we can ask him about QFT stuff given that he is currently focusing on QFT

2:16 PM
@ACuriousMind why do you look like a Hindu

vzn
@Secret =D

@0celo7 lolwat

@ACuriousMind what is funny/unclear?

vzn
@Secret Shis a real beauty there. reminds me of zen buddhism somehow

@0celo7 It is both funny and unclear to me that Viconia looks "Hindu" to you

vzn
2:18 PM
just saw steve jobs documentary last nite that interviewed his zen buddhism teacher

@vzn Why don't you spell things properly?

How does one even look "Hindu"? The only thing I associate to Hinduism visually is that red dot between the eyes, and she doesn't have that.

@ACuriousMind The head scarf

vzn
@0celo7 why dont you conform to demands of authority? :P

and the skin color
@vzn What authority?

vzn
2:19 PM
@0celo7 exactly

@0celo7 Sigh...she's a drow (dark elf), and she's wearing it to not get burnt by the sun and/or humans

vzn
@ACuriousMind who is viconia?

@vzn A character from Baldur's Gate (this is the image from the second part)

@ACuriousMind why the sigh?

vzn
oh D&D cool, more geek stuff even before geeks were cool

2:23 PM
@0celo7 Because I also don't see what is especially Hindu about a head scarf

@ACuriousMind Hindus wear headscarves dude

@0celo7 So do Muslims, or people who just like headscarves :P

@ACuriousMind yeah but she doesn't look muslim
and the second set is empty

user116211
@0celo7 Show him a pic of Hindu lady wearing a saree... she is more like a westerner converted to hinduism ;/

@TerryBollinger kerbal space station game. very advanced physics simulator, its amazing, its kind of like NASA-in-a-box, the kids are playing it, think its a great intro to space physics/ aerospace engr. went to a conference last summer and there was a kerbal space program "coach" there recruiting students...
@ACuriousMind as you may be aware, this is becoming/ become an extremely political topic in parts of the world eg EU etc. on women aka abaya laws / niqab

2:31 PM
@ACuriousMind oh she's not Hindu
she's a gypsy
because dark elves are gypsies
see now it makes sense

@vzn Yeah, I don't live under a rock ;P
@0celo7 You have a peculiar notion of "sense"

vzn
@ACuriousMind lol, ok, yeah, some others do o_O

@ACuriousMind Logical reasoning is peculiar?
Figures

@0celo7 how goes the nuclear engineering? do you have any postgraduation ideas? do you want to do research someday?

2:47 PM
yes
@DanielSank Hmm, looks like I can get a Link to the Past on my new 3DS

@0celo7 reminds me are you taking any engineering courses now?

I am this summer
And one in the fall

cool, finally xD

the summer one is shit, a bunch of my friends took it last spring
worst class ever apparently

what is it called?

2:49 PM
Engineering statics
Bridge design, basically.

http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/258444/can-will-a-proton-escape-the-nucleus-when-a-force-is-applied

For some reason, I never actually thought about trying to tear a nucleus apart before with electric field, despite knowing well that the nucleus has positively charged protons. Unfortunately, the answer to this question, unlike most "unknown unknown (at least to me) questions" is no, you cannot even theoretically tear a small nucleus apart with an electric field. However for the superheavy atoms, I wonder whether it will mean the decay is accelerated

user116211
@3075: Did your classes start?

3:54 PM
@MAFIA36790 no, they begin in the fall.
sem1 I have: analysis, physics, linear algebra, chem and a physics seminar.
idk why chem is a requirement... really lame.

http://www.jstor.org/stable/1968285

So in order to have a tensor whoose components are the same in every coordinate system, the upper and lower inidexes must occur in pairs and the transformation law is related by kronecker deltas
@3075 what is your study programme/field of study?

@Secret theoretical physics.
which is different from the regular physics stream because you don't do labs.

I won't see a strong relevance on chemistry unless the theoretical physics component involve atomic physics or the periodic table
thus that begs the questions on what type of chemistry is required in your degree

it's a general first year chemistry course, it's required for all bachelors of science.
I'm guessing it has 0 use in physics looking at the syllabus it looks like high school stuff.

user116211
@3075 Here we have a option: stats, chem or CS

4:07 PM
@MAFIA36790 I have to do stats as well in 1st year.

ok, I guess then it is because chemistry is a central science, always have concepts that tied to physics or biology

For chemistry courses, they might go through a little bit of basic thermodynamics, equlibriums and basic quantum mechanics. But if you fully understood all of this, then it might be not of use

NB For my uni, physics bachelor students don't have a chemistry component in their course

user116211
@3075 ours is Physics Maths mandatory; then chem or stats or CS.

I think unless you are aiming for theoretical physics, stat is necessary to interpret the experimental data

As for CS, anything to do with computer science is pretty much a required life skill nowadays in research and in the industry

user116211
@3075 everything is important; it's just a minor dude. I like comp chem and theoretical quantum chemistry; I wouldn't say I hate the other topics (especially inorganic chem and metallurgy) but yeah it is okay. So, chill. Ultimately it's all about maths and Physics.

@Secret "Computer science" $\neq$ programming/able to deal with computers!

user116211
4:12 PM
@Secret I'm opting for stats although I'm more inclined to theoretical part.

@MAFIA36790 it's lame because I already know all of it, like I said it's basic stuff.

user116211
@3075 No Quantum Chem??

@MAFIA36790 why not just take quantum mechanics?

user116211

Q: What's the difference between computer science and programming?

xXSarahXxI'm new at computer science and programming, and I was wondering, is there a difference between computer science and programming? and do you get to choose to study only one of them at the university, or both of them?

I can't program if my life depended on it.

4:14 PM
@ACuriousMind I don't just have programming in mind. However my computer knowledge suck so much that I don't know the term that refers to things like networks, protocols, encryption, data systems etc.
and I don' know if I am using the correct terms either...

@Secret Those are not "required life skills"
The only people that need to know know network protocols work are the IT people supervising the nextwork
The only people that need to know how encryption works are those that devise the encryption schemes, not the users
And so on

user116211
@3075 Hmm...

@ACuriousMind did you live on residence (with a roommate) in your first year at university?

@0celo7 k

I guess I should read that CSE to udnerstand better cause the only thing I could say is that I am aware there's something more thanprograming in computer science, but I don't understand well enough what that is

user116211
4:17 PM
@DanielSank: o/

@3075 We don't have such things as "residence"

@MAFIA36790 \o

@ACuriousMind really, how does it work?

There is special housing for students, but whether it is "on campus" or off campus is rather random, many of the houses are just scattered across the city
I understand it is quite different from what an American refers to as "on campus" or "residence".

user116211
@3075 He lives in a batman style cave - ACM-cave ;P

4:18 PM
I see.

Basically, the only difference between living in student housing and "normal" housing is the price and the ability to choose your roommates

algorithms and basic workings of a computer, I guess, otherwise I have no idea what the non programming component is

4:40 PM
@ACuriousMind Do you have a roomie??

@BernardMeurer Yes

@ACuriousMind :O Send him my hallo!
All this time and you kept this from me
un-be-lie-va-ble

4:58 PM
hello everyone

It's Robin Hood! Quick, hide your valuables!

hehe
well i need some help with 2 questions can i present them to you

I don't know, can you?

well i can ......
1
Q: The Zero Electric Potential of the "Earth"

Robin HoodI know its the potential differences that matter and generally we define the zero of the electric potential according to our convenience. I would like you to look at this standard problem: Charge $-Q$ is given to the inner (conducting) shell and the larger outer (conducting) shell is earthed ....

@ACuriousMind you there ?

5:13 PM
Yes, I am.
I think Farcher's answer is good, what doesn't satisfy you about it?

@ACuriousMind Do you have a favorite type of wurst?

@BernardMeurer I like most types of wurst

@ACuriousMind So do I! But I want to buy some and I can't decide
and I'm not Ash so I can't catch them all

Well, what kind of wurst are you looking for? To grill? To put on bread?

To put on bread

5:16 PM
Currywurst
on bread... what kind of bread?
on a sandwich? I wouldn't recommend any classic German wurst in that case

I just woke up and I'm craving wurst, and I don't want my child to be born with a wurst face so now I gotta have some

wut

I have french bread and this weird bread idk the name to

This is kind of cool:

@BernardMeurer Get liverwurst

Q: Did Emil du Bois-Reymond's 1872 lecture on the limits of science influence his brother Paul du Bois-Reymond's 1875 invention of the diagonal argument?

Gabriel FinkelsteinAs the biographer of the physiologist Emil du Bois-Reymond I'm delighted by the discussion of his brother Paul du Bois-Reymond's contribution to the invention of the diagonal argument. Does anyone know if Emil's 1872 address on "The Limits of Science" encouraged his brother Paul to think along t...

@BernardMeurer French bread... As in what Americans call French bread?
because that has nothing to do with French bread :D

@ACuriousMind I never had hat I think! Nice! thanks!
@Danu Idk, it's what we call french bread, I'll get a pic

Ah, that looks good
Not like what I encountered in Boston
Pistolets!

That's what we call french bread down here, I bloody love those
Aren't those from belgium? Pistolets

Sure, but Belgium $\simeq$ French

French is a terrible language

5:20 PM
@Danu lol,
@0celo7 It's pretty okay

@Danu In what category?

No it sounds like crap

@ACuriousMind Europe

@ACuriousMind human languages

@0celo7 "Belgium" is not a language.
@Danu That's a bit vague!

5:22 PM
and "French" is not a country
Dani obviously meant to say "Belgian"

No, I meant "Belgium is almost French"

@ACuriousMind I am not able to conclude how to solve the problem by considering the earth to be at some arbitrary potential V . Also statements like potential relative to infinity has increased or decreased

@Danu lol, nice try

@0celo7 Still not a language

@0celo7 No, you, nice try.

5:23 PM
Then you would have used \approx

Clearly not.

Fine, Flemish or whatever the hell they speak there

@0celo7 "Belgian" is not a language. What about that is unclear to you?

@ACuriousMind Also i am not able to make sense out of statements like potential relative to infinity has increased or decreasedas the charge distribution keeps changing....

I'm an American, why do I need to know about Belgium?
@ACuriousMind I'm on a phone and don't know what you're responding to

@0celo7 I'm responding to your "what"

Q: What moves the charges between capacitors?

Robin HoodSuppose I charged two capacitors to charges Q1 and Q2. By charging a capacitor to charge +Q , i mean that one plate acquires net charge +Q and another plate acquires net charge -Q.The capacitors were isolated when they were charged. Now consider the two cases:- 1)When only one plate of each cap...

@ACuriousMind Your avatar's of women are deceiving
It's almost like fake advertising

@BernardMeurer How are they more deceiving than those that depict a flaming humanoid, or elves?
Or a skull, for that matter

@ACuriousMind Because they make people think "Ah, a girl, and she's super duper knowledgeable!" And then it's just some bearded German

I am very excited. I have finally figured out what does diagrams that look like bitten into cookies in CFT are about. They are just deformed contours. The back story is that when we do radial quantization and want to compute some commutation relations, we have to do the equivalent of time ordering, as we pass from the cylindrical geometry to the complex plane description. This is radial ordering. The rest is history
I have for centuries seen this thing and thought it was some alien stuff,
Yeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me knows it now bitches!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell your mom, call your donkeys Kevin has cracked the code !!!!
