@vzn My first reaction was "this sounds awfully similar to those Lorentz violation tests that were done for photon propagation." But their faq refutes that.

user54412
That said, it's not too specific on what the effect actually is, just on what it isn't

user54412
It also worries me that their calculations simultaneously show they're looking for attometer variations but claim it can be done with half and hour of data collecting.

user54412
Very few/no papers published, but they've gone to many conferences to hype their work. Example presentation

Q: Is {299,792,458^2 * (6.67384*10^-11)} the number that can be considered a moment of inertia?

Bill SolomonWhence x is a variable, and given e=mc^2 and F=Gm1m2/r^2 and E/F=x, is approximately 59,981,482,620,609,230,385,376,000,000 the number that the equation (mcc/Gm1m2/r^2=x) reduces to?

We have a user trying to spam/game the system, and someone just upvoted?!?

@firtree not really. Just don't post complete answers, as Kyle and Danu already pointed out, but other than that you're allowed to answer a homework-llike question however you want.
My rule of thumb is that I will answer a specific conceptual question, but not help the asker any more than they've helped themselves, proportionally to what they had to do, very roughly speaking. In other words, if they've gotten themselves 50% of the way to an answer, I'll help them through what feels like 50% of the remaining half, so they will then be 75% of the way there. If they've done 30%, I'll help them with 30% of the remaining 70%. And so on.

But again that's very rough. Of course one can't really measure the amount of help given, I just use that as a guideline.
@ChrisWhite we're keeping an eye on that ;-)

Q: Can I increase the bounty amount over time?

StariorCan people be able to increase the amount of bounty after they put the bounty on a question? If there isn't, I think it should be because when a question still stays unanswered after you put a bounty on it, you should be able to add more bounty to get the question answered more quickly. Isn't the...

@Danu Well then, perhaps we really are nicer ;) Might also be that they get more questions/activity there, so perhaps they've grown tired of math questions in chat, who knows?

1:55 PM
Yeah, I don't know
I was just asking how a norm induces a topology. I think I figured it out (norm -> metric -> topology) though

2:44 PM
@DavidZ I'd be very interested to see the detailed and elaborate answer you must give to someone who's only done 1% of the solution. A good 0.99% of the rest of the way. That should help.
Not saying that's bad. Just saying it's humorous

3:19 PM
Hey guys, what do you think about what I did here? physics.stackexchange.com/questions/72870/mass-of-empty-ads-5

Jim
@Danu I have no strong opinion one way or the other

Do you think it is a good thing to try to get questions out of that section?
(granted that I have the motivation to do so - apparently)

Jim
I stand by my current viewpoint

OK :P I also really hope it gets an upvote because else my efforts will be futile (hint hint.. sigh )

@Danu I've honestly not much of an idea what is going on in that question, and I am reluctant to vote on answers I do not understand

3:29 PM
:( It doesn't seem like one needs to understand the question too well to understand my answer

Jim
it's a community wiki. You don't get rep for upvotes on those so how will your efforts be futile without upvotes?

I want it out of the unanswered section!!
because it isnt!

Jim
Ah now I get it
There, I still don't fully understand what it says, but it's clear you got some of it from a paper, so I trust it's correct

facepalm I wasn't getting that either. I think my brain is still asleep today

it's all pretty much exactly from the paper
it just p!sses me off when I see answers in the comments that solved the question but haven't been turned into an answer :P

Jim
3:39 PM
On a different note, is it wrong of me to enjoy looking through the active page for highly viewed posts with more than 2 answers that were most recently modified by users with 1 rep purely because I know they'll have left absolutely terrible answers and it's fun to read and/or flag them?

Totally irrelevant formatting question: Is there a way to get text in between to asterisks without the parser interpreting the asterisks as markdown and turning the text cursive instead?

@Jim You're just a troll, aren't you? ;)

@Jim You're doing the community a service by flagging them, so I don't think you are that wrong

yes @ACuriousMind if you don't have spaces after/before them*lol* haha *lol*haha

Jim
@ACuriousMind use a \ as in *text between stars*

3:41 PM
ah

Ahhh...normal escaping works, then? I should've tried that

* just like latex commands I guess *

*facepalm*

altho I actually like that it makes it cursive in nearly every situation

Jim
and that double makes it bold

3:43 PM
I like the cursiveness usually, too. The most natural way of slightly emphasising things without giving people the impression you're shouting at them

Jim
I'd call it italics but cursive is fine

@Jim Again, my German mother tongue betrays me! Its kursiv in German, so I always forget that cursive is not what I really want to say.

Jim
dieses skript heist italien?

I don't think that there's a script called italy :D

Jim
no, but it looks cool on paper
besides, my german skills don't go far enough beyond that to say it any better

3:49 PM
btw, cursive actually is something else

If you want to ask "Is this script called italics?", then you would say "Heißt diese Schrift kursiv?"

I may be coming to germany for a week soon

@Danu Yeah, it's the horrible hand-writing you learn in elementary school and never actually need :D

really getting nervous about not finding a place in Munich yet... ugh

@Danu To look for rooms in person?

3:51 PM
@ACuriousMind lol I still write like that

Jim
@ACuriousMind No, I wanted to jokingly play with the similarities between englisch and german by saying german words that would look in english like I'm callinc it italics

and yes

@Jim Alright :) Then, except for substituting Schrift for Skript, I think you did fine

Jim
that was intentional, schrift isn't close enough to script so I germanized script by making the c a k

@Danu My cursive is borderline illegible, so one I was at university actually needing to read the stuff I've written down, I switched to rather "print-style" handwriting

Jim
3:54 PM
Wow, I did exactly the same thing

@Jim Are you aware that Skript is a German word, meaning (only) a play's script or similar instructive things?

Mine is exactly borderline as well; I've never actually had any points deduced on tests or anything like that, but everyone always complains :D

Jim
no, but that makes it appropriate as it does trnaslate to script (in one form or another)

Yeah, you basically stuffed that sentence as full of false friends as possible :D

Jim
Also, I'm sure there is a script for a play somewhere named "Italy"

3:56 PM
@Danu People still complain about mine because it tends to be miniature compared to most

4:10 PM
@Danu: About feeling nervous for not finding a room - when I started in Heidelberg, there was a shortage of room and a bunch of students spent their first weeks in improvised "lodgings" in the sports halls. :D (I do not wish you the same fate in Munich)

:( definitely not looking forward to a scenario like that

4:42 PM
@KyleKanos :17417314 :17421581 @KyleKanos @Danu @DavidZ Thanks!
@Danu The requirements for the full-fledged answers are higher that for the comments, so it may be because of lazyness. At least, I am such lazy.

What do you guys think? physics.stackexchange.com/q/133229/23473 Should I give him a better hint?

Jim
5:49 PM
@Phonon perhaps saying somebody's statement is the stupidest thing you've heard isn't best prefaced with "with all due respect" unless it's clear that respect is actually due

Jim
6:13 PM
Nobody look at my user profile! I have 666 views and I want to see how long it can stay there

@Jim the respect is towards the person, the stupidity comment was towards his statement...

Jim
@Phonon sorry, should have been more clear. When you say "with all due respect", what if the person is not due any respect? Not saying that was the case, just saying that opening line doesn't always convey what is intended. And it almost never softens the blow

Q: Thoughts on meta post on homework question handling and basic questions

dustinI spend most of my time on the TeX.SE and venture to other SE sites when looking for help. However, the atmosphere here seems to be going the way of the "old" stackoverflow SE. By old, I mean about 5months or so ago. SO was becoming extremely hostile and unfriendly to those trying to learn pro...

so something needs to be done about this solomon user that's been making multiple profiles and repeatedly spamming this particular question. physics.stackexchange.com/q/133259/23473
It's probably the 4th time today that question has been posted by them and there was a few yesterday too

8:59 PM
@Jim Would have been a good use case for a flag. I'll promote this to the team to get a temporary IP ban or some such.
