so some people here were going to watch the Antares launch in the distance...

@Danu likewise - awesome site so far

2:20 AM
@ChrisWhite Er ... if the reports I'm seeing are correct that didn't go as planned.

user54412
@dmckee It's an "anomaly" ;)

The nice thing about being in theory/simulation: there is little chance my work goes up in a $200 million fireworks display

2:35 AM
Hmmm ... yes. I've been in the position of making decision that could affect US$10million+ in hardware.
You make those as conservatively as possible.
But there comes a place when you think---hope!---that you really have dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, and then you have to try it.
I've failed to break KamLAND and Double Chooz and some less expensive systems over the years.
And that is always worth a beer.
Once---when I was a lowely grad student, none-the-less---I have to make a US$250,000 decision on the fly in short time: the thermal feedback system on a cryotarget had suddenly gone wonky and I was the "expert" on shift. I guessed right. Phew!

Hah, I'm the only one with access to the review queue on the new history of science and mathematics site! :D I'm surging with power.

Absolute power?
:D

9:11 AM
@Danu am catching up

9:22 AM
@Danu: Can you send me a beta invite?

@JamalS I can do that if you want?
i am a member there

9:52 AM
@Omen: Ok

I think I am going to need your email address
one way to do it would be to edit it into your physics profile box and then remove it once I send the invite

It's okay, I have Jamal's e-mail address already

no worries
hey @Danu, i have even invaded meta... 4 posts there
I reckon you'd be a great mod on hsm @Danu

10:08 AM
I was thinking about this.... but it'll eat a lot of time

I have put meta posts about naming the chatroom ideas and the wording on the tour and help pages
@Danu you'll have the support of 2 other mods no doubt and the rest of us members

I'd certainly consider it :)

I'd nominate you

let's stick to the new hsm chat, btw
gotta try to get it a little lively over there

@Danu indeeed

11:16 AM
@Danu Good. Let the power flow through you, young padawan ;)

@Omen - I agree that this is an interesting question, but is it really worth a +500 bounty?

Q: References/resources on problems surrounding peer review in physics?

Panda BearI was watching this video on YouTube (this is the second part of it) and it motivated me to ask this question. From the videos: ....that's the good aspect of peer review. It should work to sift out problems with the interpretation, problems with the results. It should work to improve a paper...

Physics homework questions

Proposed Q&A site for students needing help and hints for physics problems and questions either experimental, conceptual or computational and people who need help to understand a concept in physics or have questions about some concepts taught in class or physics books.

Currently in definition.

5:57 PM
@KyleKanos Hmmm...I'm not sure what to think of that.

I don't think I have a problem with it
(Though the proposers definitions are a little wonky)
I doubt it will reduce our Q/day much
I think the issue would be finding people who are willing to answer someone else's HW questions!

Yeah, well, it perhaps will reduce the flood of homework here. But I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the notion that solving explicit physics problems is worth its own SE.

I concur

And the sets of askers and answerers will probably be completely disjoint - is that good for community building?

My guess is that it won't garner the support necessary to make it out of the proposal phase, but I've been known to be wrong many times!

Ha! 2/5 of the followers are also supporting Trolling

user54412
perhaps they could be merged...

I don't really follow much of anything on Area51
I probably should. Maybe

Code understanding

Proposed Q&A site for most of the time when it comes to contribute in opensource project or to edit others code, most of the time newcomers [or even sometimes pro coder] failed to understand where to start or edit. This site will help them to take help and understand.

Currently in definition.

That one actually seems useful.

7:20 PM
Is it the real @JohnRennie over there? Not linked to his account here
And that proposal is not yet defined, but the intention should not be to answer homework questions, but rather to asks basic physics problems, without the concept-oriented we need here

There's a new proposal for "Science Educators" on Area 51. Consider supporting! area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/79366/science-educators

11:44 PM
@ACuriousMind not our problem though!
