@dmckee If an edit does not address all problems with the post (but is nevertheless an improvement), but we as reviewers do, for whatever reason, not have the inclination to fix that - should we approve the partial edit or skip the review?
 
@ACuriousMind Hmmm ... I don't know what the official policy is. Certainly that post is a fair amount of work to fix and for a post that is likely to remain closed, so I can see not wanting to dive in.
My major concern is that I don't want low-rep editors getting the idea that doing so minimal a job is consistent with with our expectations, so I'd even consider rejecting it.

Too minor is gone, official policy seems to be to approve/improve partial edits
And Shog's response to my mother meta request to word the rejection message in a friendlier way seems to indicate that rejecting an edit is considered a "hostile action" that should only be taken if the edit is actually totally worthless.

How does increasing resistance in a circuit increase the potential difference?
The potential difference, from what I've understood right now, is the difference between charges at two points of a given conductor, right?
If I increase the difference, the work needed to reach the other point increases, but the difference is same nonetheless.
It's definitely a conceptual problem, I know that I am wrong.
But I need some guidance from my peers (hint: not my useless school teachers)

Imagine a simple circuit with a 12 V, direct current supply from a battery.
I introduce a resistor of 3 ohms.
The potential difference across the circuit increases, right?
Wait a second. I just realized something. I'm such an idiot! The current (rate of flow of charge) decreases, right?

You are still not precise. A potential difference is between two points (or at/over an element of the circuit). But yes, if you increase the resistance of a resistor connected to a battery, the current through it will decrease (and the voltage drop at the resistor will stay at 12V, since a battery provides constant voltage supply).

The term "voltage drop" is really confusing.
If the potential difference is constant throughout the circuit, and the only thing that the resistors affect is the rate of flow of charge (current), then wouldn't "current drop" be a more apt description?

And with that in mind, I think, as currently written, it is not a good resource recommendation question, but I don't really know if it deserves to be closed for that.

Well Diffusive Shock Acceleration (what I do) gets a power-law spectrum of about -2
Independent of boson vs fermion
Propagation losses (spallation, collisions, etc) bring it to -2.6
But that's only up to about 3 PeV

Above that, DSA cannot work (as the primary acceleration method) and the power-law spectrum jumps to -3ish
It seems like these guys are suggesting that bosons dominate at lower energies and fermions at higher

The problem I see is that protons are fermions, and these make up 90% of all observed cosmic rays

Can anyone recommend a tensor package for GR in Mathematica? Ideally, easy to use and fast. (I tried 'GREAT' but it's taken over 30 minutes and it still isn't done.)
(Note: I'm working with large metrics, in D=26 dimensions.)

@picaposo Depends on what you're trying to do research in. Germany is good for math.phys., I think Holland's pretty good for cosmo/HEP stuff these days (also the quantum gravity group at the UvA is nice, although I'm biased :P)
 
@Danu I'm current at RUG and they have a THEP research group as well. I don't really know where I'm heading (I'm still doing my BSc). I mostly asked this question to figure out what is generally required to get into a Masters of Ph.D program for THEP. Do you think an 8.0 is a safe overall grade or do you need a 9.0 or above to be competitive for such a program?

Getting into a MSc. degree is not that hard. An 8.0 average will get you in almost everywhere in Europe.
...although a 9.0 is, of course, better ;)

@KyleKanos and others, regarding plagiarism: we've kind of shifted from deleting plagiarized content outright to just quoting it and linking to the source, in many cases. So I wonder if that meta post should be updated.

@ACuriousMind well, plagiarized posts can be deleted. I'm not saying it was mishandled, I just want to make sure the policy is consistent for the future. Evidently we have some things to work out.
I think "Do not copy the complete text of external sources" is really meant to say that an answer consisting of nothing but a quote is frowned upon, but I would consider that a "soft" rule.

The first Tuesday of the semester, 8 AM at Siedentop's Mathematical Quantum Mechanics. In the first row, a 70+ bald guy is sitting. Once the lecture starts, he straight up whips out a pair of god damn binoculars to view the blackboard

So halfway through the lecture, Siedentop has outlined the standard setup in QM: Start with the Hilbert space $L^2$, and restrict your operators to appropriate domains in order to prove interesting things.
The guy speaks up: 'You seem to be getting things completely the wrong way around. The way to do quantum mechanics is not to start from Hilbert space, but to consider the operator algebra.'
Siedentop: 'I understand that the $C^\star$-algebra perspective is very nice and important, but this is how the physicists insist on doing QM.'
 
Uhhhh...them's fighting words :D

Needless to say, gramps didn't show up to the next lecture, or the one after that... ;-)

That's true... When Strings 2012 was held at LMU some guy verbally assaulted Witten after his talk! It's this high school teacher guy (from Munich) who writes (popular) books on how 'particle physicists are all misguided' yadayada. He's apparently quite well-known. Anyhow, I'll call it a night.
