I exactly agree with what Qmechanic says about the different kinds of metrics, that the spacetime metric is not the only one useful and used in physics. And yep theoretical physics can be quite mathematical, nothing bad about this ;-)

Since I'm in that in-between stage where I can retag questions without verification but can't edit questions without verification, is it better (on new questions) to retag and then edit? That way at least the retag is visible until the edit is accepted...

Yeah, I guess that seems right

@DavidZaslavsky I don't know enough about Ising spins to know whether questions on visualizing them would be on-topic or not (obviously software-recommendation isn't)
It looks like it's just a graph of +1/-1 designating spins?

Yep
The Ising model (; ), named after the physicist Ernst Ising, is a mathematical model of ferromagnetism in statistical mechanics. The model consists of discrete variables that represent magnetic dipole moments of atomic spins that can be in one of two states (+1 or −1). The spins are arranged in a graph, usually, a lattice, allowing each spin to interact with its neighbors. The model allows the identification of phase transitions, as a simplified model of reality. The two-dimensional square-lattice Ising model is one of the simplest statistical models to show a phase transition. The Ising...
The topic is definitely physics-y enough to be on topic here

But the concept of "visualize a graph with a variable at each node" isn't at all, and that's all this boils down to it seems
It doesn't matter what the variable is per se

Good point

3:07 AM
I could be missing something about how visualization might help study the results that only physicists might know

I guess this is part of why recommendation questions are off topic, that you can often reduce the requirements to some other set of requirements that have nothing to do with your site
@tpg2114 it's possible. Ising models are not my specialty, and so I wouldn't know, but I imagine there are programs which can display various computed parameters based on the states of the spins
And perhaps even evolve the spins over time according to some specific model

That's possible, but those wouldn't fall in the visualization category, at least in my book. I think closing that question was correct, but I'm still not sure how I feel about software questions in general

Oh, indeed, I do agree that that question was appropriate to close

Are you enjoying the lovely PA winter weather by the way?
I grew up outside of Philly, almost everybody from my school ends up at PSU. I went south to get out of the crappy winters

Well, I'm at home with my family, so it's upstate NY winter weather, but yes, very much :-)
I actually like this kind of weather
I want my winters to have proper amounts of snowfall

3:13 AM
I'm at Georgia Tech... Atlanta weather is much more my style

Fair enough ;-) I guess it's pretty nice there this time of year?

Comparatively yes. It was in the 70's up until last week... We had severe storms, tornados south of us, last night
Now it's 25 and windy, but it will only last a few days and get back up to 50's/60's

ick :-( 25 Fahrenheit?
That's colder than it is here...

We usually get one bad winter storm... last year we had a storm in Jan that dropped about an inch of ice
And the 3 snow plows for the state of GA couldn't keep up, we were iced over for like 2 weks

wow
Of course an inch of ice is nothing to sneeze at, even in the northeast

3:17 AM
Yeah, ice is way worse than snow.
That's usually what happens here, we rarely get snow but ice storms happen each year
I've been down here 8 years now... I don't miss snow, that's for sure

No complaints about that, it means more for me ;-) lol
Actually it hasn't even snowed much recently, not that I can remember anyway. This storm we're having right now is one of the biggest in a few years

Yeah, I think two years ago there was another big one, at least in SE PA
This was the first year I didn't go home... My mom wasn't happy, but I managed to avoid the crappy weather at least

Kind of worked out, in a way

I thought so...

Q: Element of area in 4-dimensional space-time

AnuarHow would you proof that $$ \mathrm {Tr} (\mathbf{S\cdot \bar S })=0$$ where $\mathbf S$ is an element of area delimited for the 4-vectors $\mathbf u$ and $\mathbf v$ given by $$S^{\alpha \beta}\equiv u^\alpha v^\beta-u^\beta v^\alpha$$ and $$\bar S^{\alpha \beta}\equiv \frac{1}{2}\epsilon^{\alp...

Does that fall under too?

Hmm... well, I can see the argument for saying it would, but I wouldn't put that tag on it. It just doesn't read like a homework question to me

3:23 AM
I didn't think so either, but it also seems like something that would be in a textbook somewhere

Could be, but I could also see it coming up in a different context - maybe the OP wants it for research, or is just curious.
When it comes to applying , it's hard to define exactly what reads like a homework-like question, but you know it when you see it, once you've seen enough of them

Yeah, usually any time a number appears... or "Please help!"

Well those are the obvious ones ;-)

It could be a full-time job just policing/editing questions

yeah
this is why I've wasted so much time on this site ;-)

3:32 AM
Me too... rep is hard to earn 2 points at a time though
While waiting for fluid dynamics questions to come through

yeah... I feel like there could be a lot more good fluid dynamics questions on the site, but I don't know how to encourage people to ask them

Maybe it's just not that interesting to the people here. Not all of us can like everything :)

3:47 AM
True. But that just means we can use more people who are interested in fluid dynamics :-)

It's interesting to watch the evolution of people doing work who need help:

Yeah... no complaints here though
well, if the questions are good
They probably look at me the same way on scicomp.SE

I jump from SciComp to Stats to here enough that it's harder to track my work progress :)

Somebody should write an app for that (lol)
Of course there's always this

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a question on one of those three sites and go "Oh, I can answer that!" and it turns out to be from somebody working downstairs in my lab...

3:59 AM
@tpg2114 cool :-)
Exactly once, I think, I've seen a question posted by someone I know

4:25 AM
nice

Q: Are community members disciplined over abusing other community members elsewhere using links to this site?

A: Are community members disciplined over abusing other community members elsewhere using links to this site?

SklivvzI think you should absolutely report it, but keep in mind that, as David says, mods can only take action for whatever happens on the site and not for what happens outside. That said, it is obvious that people having arguments off-site is likely to have consequences on-site, and any warning is us...

I have no clue whatsoever why @david and @manish would discourage people from trying to help... :-/

@Sklivvz ?
We're just saying that we really don't care what happens off-site, and we shall not excercise power because of it
Also, David isn't discouraging it
> That being said, it isn't against the rules just to bring up a member's behavior elsewhere. But if you're doing so in an attempt to shame the person whose behavior on another site is being discussed, that may qualify as a personal attack, which is definitely not appropriate here

hey everyone!
anyone here ??

Hey!

how are u Manishearth ?

10:20 AM
That's how I read it...
"Should that member be brought to the attention of the moderators?" "No"
Furthermore, he spends a whole paragraph warning the guy that doing so may "qualify as a personal attack".
How does that not count as discouraging?

10:36 AM
@Sklivvz Uhh... "if you're doing so in an attempt to shame the person".. That's pretty clear, and that will only discourage the folks trying to dig up dirt.
The question was: "Are community members disciplined over abusing other community members elsewhere using links to this site?"
The answer is, clearly, "No"
> if one person accuses another off site of having sock puppets here, it's still relevant to us! If someone is a known troll outside of this community, it's still relevant to us! Etcetera.
Agreed
But in this case we're not disciplining A for abusing B.
We're disciplining B for sockpuppetry and A gets a pat on the back

Surely we should encourage people to contribute and help. The answers on that question were *dis*couraging,
Not arguing semantics, but I think my point is pretty self-evident. It's in the tone, IMO. If you want to argue that the letter of the answer is correct, you are simply missing the point.

:/
I know
So how would you make it more encouraging?

I did answer no?
Well Hi Pranit. Your personal info could be added to your about me section of your profile. Atleast try not to add them to your posts. And, one more thing - Questions like these could be easily googled :-) — Crazy Buddy 40 mins ago

Point is, nothing wrong in discouraging calling out users for abusing each other off-site, IMO

@crazybuddy the link in your comment doesn't work

10:43 AM
@Sklivvz yes it does
You're not Pranit
(or a mod here)
so you can't view it

@Manishearth the link is public though

@Sklivvz ?
@Sklivvz He gave the profile edit link. Which is a non-404 only for mods and the user himself

@Manishearth Everything is wrong in discouraging people to contribute.

@Sklivvz Contribute how? By calling out A for abusing B? If done on meta, that's a whole bunch of drama we'd all rather avoid.

@Manishearth As I said, by contacting the moderators, via a private chat for example, or a flag, or by contacting SEI.

10:46 AM
kk
I'll post my own answer then

You can't simply assume the worst. 99% of people are actually good citizens just trying to help :-)

Yeah, but if something will do the opposite of helping, it's OK to discourage it.
(I'm talking about meta posting)

@Manishearth I've edited my answer if that helps

I still am including the personal attack bit, but in a different form
Gah
My answer is pretty much your answer after the edit :S
glares
(no websockets here, so I don't get to see it immediately)

11:14 AM
@Manishearth how on earth did you ever get physics.stackexchange.com/badges/35/unsung-hero

user54412
11:25 AM
@Sklivvz great question

user54412
and who ever came up with that as a badge???

Err... Sorry - I was away..
What did I miss?
Hi Sklivvz, Manish, Chris :-)

user54412
Hi

@Sklivvz I saw that already...
@ChrisWhite What happened..? - Everyone gone ? :-)

user54412
@CrazyBuddy I guess so...

11:36 AM
Hws ur day going..?
I just completed my sems
Exams - Yeeeuuuhhh (Yuck)

user54412
ok - it is after all "break" here in the US

user54412
which just means I do research from home rather than go into the office :P

Office. huh?

user54412
well, I do have my own office

user54412
but it's not like astrophysics needs to be done there - anywhere with an internet connection works for me

11:42 AM
Great :-)
@ChrisWhite Your comment here
I thought of teasing him by saying neutrinos. But, I didn't say exactly what I thought

user54412
yeah, i figured as much

user54412
:P

user54412
just didn't want anyone to think we actually accelerate neutrinos at the LHC

Hey, man... Are u kidding me..?
One more thing - How many retagging you do a day..?
I saw your history - some 13 or 18 posts reviewed - something like that
We shouldn't do more than 5. Nah?

user54412
i retag 5/day, which usually involves going through 10-20 posts

user54412
11:51 AM
half to 3/4 of the posts are fine - i just delete them from the list

Ah... I see that :-)

user54412
actually, most of what i retag wasn't "untagged" - it was just tagged poorly

Yeah... Also, I think only "astronomy imports" are easy to revise
theoretical and other - Yuck
@ChrisWhite Well, I think I can ask you an astro question - Chris

user54412
oh?

user54412
i may be too tired to answer it now :P

11:59 AM
Err... Atleast you could think of it for a week, add it to your assignments, etc.., etc...
:-P

Q: Collision between Neutron stars and Black holes

Once upon a time, It was my fav. question
Then, I got a lot more here :-)
I started a bounty, revised and revised until it entered comm. wiki

user54412
there's a lot going on there - and a lot that isn't entirely known

user54412
i'll think about it and maybe write up an answer at some point

user54412
but for know, I think I'll go to bed ;)

@Sklivvz I used to post answers to easier questions. (or have people post better answers to harder qs) Nobody noticed 'em. I guess. Also, the OPs many times couldn't vote/didn't know they could:

No prob. Just showed up for your attention

Mar 13 at 6:30, by David Zaslavsky
Realistically it means the people who accepted your answers didn't realize that they could (usually, should) also upvote them, so there's a bit of luck involved
So I got the badge :p

@ChrisWhite Ok Chris. Bye :-D
@Manishearth Oh...
Hi Manish

hey :)

I thought of reaching that
It ended up - sucking at 5 itself :-)

@CrazyBuddy You shouldn't try for that one.

That was somewhat challenging
But, of course
I cant decide that. Users do - My luck or my bad

12:07 PM
@CrazyBuddy 25% of total makes it much harder than that
This badge is one of those "consolation"-type badges. Not a "try to get this shiny thing!" badge

Yeah... But, that also requires : "The user shouldn't get noticed by others"
If he gets noticed by his rep. (as thought by other users), they'll start upvoting him

@CrazyBuddy not really rep. It depends on the quality of the answer
The badge is harder to get as time passes because of the 25% thing

But, there are users who see for their rep. (and not "quality")
@Manishearth I forgot it now. coz, mine crossed more than "100"....
BTW, I think you've noticed the serial upvoting
and its reverse - which made me join meta...
Hi @Sklivvz...

Which serial upvoting? O_0
Oh that one
I thought you meant right now

Nah..

12:15 PM
Hi, erm, hello?

@Sklivvz Well, I think you saw "How he became the ....HERO" :-)

Yep

BTW, My exams came to an end - Free until next sem - for six months I think so...

6 months vacation?

But, hey- I have to go to colg....

12:18 PM
Or you mean next end - sems?

My speech sometimes mean other things - which is rude
Not vacation
Two days ago - I visited parenting.SE
It was awesome - There were many questions which support guys like us
@Sklivvz Well, I need to ask you one thing (as you're a mod in skeptics)
I haven't answered a question over there.
What kind of articles should I produce in a post?
@Manishearth Well Manish - I think my addiction has increased here...
Even during sems, I was quite active (though not always)
Well, Bye then guys - We'll assemble later :-)

12:37 PM
@cra, as an answer?
It depends on the question, but, in order of preference: meta-reviews (e.g. cochrane collaboration), reputable peer reviewed articles, non peer reviews but published articles, primary sources (with caution!), wikipedia (with a lot of caution!)
we delete anecdotal and theoretical answers pretty much outright

Q: Do we allow paper/reference requests?

KitchiI've seen this meta question already, but that deals with a slightly different case I think. I'm wondering if questions like this should be allowed. Specifically, I'm wondering if requests for papers and/or reviews on something should be allowed. Something like this strikes me as "easily googlea...

@Sklivvz Guys, I have a serious physics question.
Is this legit:

A: What are some alternative power sources for wireless sensors?

Jeff RiceIt's really simple, the information is out, you have to find it, try it, some things also contain a lie. The reason for digital signal is less power in the air. Tesla wanted everyone to have free power, the problems of why it failed was because it was found out that it really was free energy, no...

> GOD is real, satan is also, the world is backwards as long as satan is in power, the evil does not want you free, they do not want you to know the TRUTH.
wait, what?

stormistI'm trying to create my own ultrasonic humidifier. I ordered the misting part which works great but it only functions correctly in shallow water. So I'd like to feed from a large water reservoir to a smaller one. My question is how can I fill the smaller reservoir to a desired water level? Will I...

It's engineering, but has absolutely no questions about physics

True...

(for the record, I agree that it's OT, but not entirel\y sure)

Okay, done
I needed a sanity check... I was thinking it could be on topic maybe if some answers came up with awesome physics ways to solve it, but they all seemed to devolve into device-building

A: Community, help us moderate the site!

Behold!

I guess our bot poster is slacking off :-P

Hum, it has a downvote. Yours?

Anyway... (great post overall but) there are a couple of little things I wanted to pick on
no not mine

I can understand the answer getting a downvote (too long), but the q seems sensible :s

yeah, that confuses me

11:22 PM
@DavidZaslavsky go on

well: not to say you necessarily should have written this differently, but the ultimate goal is that people with VTC privileges shouldn't have to flag along with voting to close.
The fact that we ask them to flag is only a temporary measure because there are so few active close voters

@DavidZaslavsky True... But there's no harm in letting them do it
For now
I was going to add something to that effect ("Currently, we don't have many close voters, so it's fine to flag every post you CV. Later on, as the community starts closing more questions, flag-to-CV only when you want to be insistent about it ;-)"), but I decided against it later

I dunno, I'd say there is some (minor) harm, in that it gets people dependent on moderator action. But for now it's a necessary evil.

@DavidZaslavsky exactly

also... hm, let's see if I can remember my other thought
Maybe it was about merging, i.e. the questions shouldn't be merged unless they're pretty much word-for-word copies. But that's not a big deal.

11:27 PM
@DavidZaslavsky ah, the post is flagged. We decide if it will be merged. Simple :)

Oh, and knowing the crowd on this site, sometimes I wonder if "rude/offensive" is really self-explanatory :-P
But I think those things will sort themselves out

@DavidZaslavsky If you want, edit it :)

Eh, I'll wait to see what people think first
