8:00 AM
then you should have accent also

they don't usually teach by themselves, they just help the japanese teachers

My Dutch accent is almost non-existent
I... adapt my accent to the person I'm talking to, so that would not work well if I were to teach Japanese students... xD

i have a german accent, i will always be recognised as german by native speakers, but i think i am understood quite well

I'd just start speaking engrish >_>

i have my own native accent
if they understand that is enough

8:02 AM
It happens automatically. I'd like to try ALT, though, but I don't really have any teaching experience~...
Or is it not in so much an intensive teaching job, like say a regular teacher?

try it
you will learn how to teach :D

I'd think you'd have to prepare lessons, etc

@AsadaShino I shinko yuu donto adopto japanesu akkusuento....

add u and o :D

I don't really want to ruin students' lessons, just because I'm learning to teach >_>

8:04 AM
@Martin-マーチン won't they be angry if we talk like that

as an ALT you are just there to help pronunciation. the classes will be prepared by the japanese teacher
@mirroroftruth it is not nice to make fun of their accent, that is right

@AsadaShino I do that too without noticing

while talking in Japanese it might be but while talking english

most of the people i met know that their pronunciation is bad, so they are happy to learn with someone who can speak it better

that is good to hear
i might help someone though i am bad myself :D

8:06 AM
I'd love to give it a go, but I'll need to do some decent research, so I don't get stuck in one of those companies that just use ALTs to make money off them in a bad way, I've heard/read about those

@ToshinouKyouko the first chem class i gave as a teaching assisstent was a disaster
i had to learn a lot too

They take a bigger cut out of the pay, than the rent is, you have to pay key-money, even though the building you're renting in doesn't require it, stuff like that
You can randomly be relocated without prior notice

@Martin-マーチン did you laugh out loud when you heard their talking like that for the 1st time while teaching

Or would it be better to apply to a school personally?
I'm a developer at heart, so I don't know if I'd do well to start a teaching assistant job xD

There will probably be some notable companies
So stay safe and go with them

8:08 AM
It'd be an enriching experience though, I'm sure

Ask ur embassy

@ToshinouKyouko I'll have to do some research on that then :)
And yes, find out if we have one and ask them if there is one

@AsadaShino maybe you want to start here: jetprogramme.org/en

@Martin-マーチン That's the government funded one, right?

@mirroroftruth that was back in germany... here i only do one on one sessions
@AsadaShino yes

8:09 AM
Okay, I'll give it a look-see :)

if you apply, be persistent... try, try again ;)

@Martin-マーチン so after applying there can we still join uni and take both simultaneously

Haha, thanks for the tip :)

Ganbatte kudasai :D

8:12 AM
Ganbarimasu~
マーチンさんにおかげで, is that correct grammar?

There was a very funny situation here when i was working with one of my co-workers... he was telling me what to type on a keyboard and we got to the point where he said "ell" and i typed l and then he was "no, the other one". So i typed L and he was laughing and said "no the other one: ellll". And then he pointed to r...

@Martin-マーチン :D

I can imagine that being a bit confusing :P
r or l

there was one question posted here, about L and R of death note :D

8:14 AM
@Martin-マーチン Was what I typed above in any way correct? :P My mastery of the Japanese language is quite... Lacking, haha

okay brb, lunch time, i will go grab some :D

Okies, enjoy!

@AsadaShino it seems to be correct

\o/

but my nihongo is crap XD

8:15 AM
Hahaha

@mirroroftruth Itadakimasu!

'I only work here, I don't need to speak the language'
jk jk of course ^^

hmmm, unfortunately that is true
one language class a week won't get you very far

I can imagine that

and it does not improve your vocab

8:17 AM
Though regular interaction during/around classes probably helps a lot

but if you do the ALT, you should be able to learn quickly
my friend does it and he has a lot of time to study

Well, you have to translate some things too I reckon or you see things translated that you then have to say in English
Being in a class with students interested in learning another language is bound to have a positive effect on your understanding of their language
Is what I'd expect anyway

yeah... the most positive things I heard is when people work in after school classes for private companies...
at least the interaction with the students is quite nice they say
the working hours are horrible though
there always is a catch

I can imagine, those are the people that go out of their way to learn the language
They WANT to learn the language, since they do it outside of their normal work/school hours
Instead of just for school credit or something
You wouldn't go to a class you didn't like or weren't interested in, after normal hours
At least I wouldn't*
That'd just be a huge waste of time
I'm also still a bit confused as to how you politely say "you" in Japanese
anata is too personal, kimi sounds informal and I'm not going to start with temee, that's anime-speak (or rather, very informal or offensive)
Would kimi (君) still be the best way to say it?
Though you could probably refer to them by name, if you knew it

the last one is the way to go
or just leave it completely
senpai-sama might work some times

8:26 AM
I thought it'd get confusing, since you also usually don't say watashi/boku/ore when referring to yourself
Hahaha
"notice me"

hihi... watashi is foreigner speak, they told me

Had a hunch it would be...
It's the formal way to say it though
So I guess formally it's not wrong, just unusual?

well it is formal, so you would probably say it in keigo, if you would be referring to yourself

you don't say "watashi wa konbi ni iku", you'd say "konbi ni iku" and it would be clear what you mean

but as far as I gathered you are not very often talking about yourself

8:29 AM

and when asking if someone wants to go there, it'd be "konbi ni iku ka?"

yes... well konbini ni iku

ahh konbini
another thing learned ^^

not really, you would formally say konbini ni ikimasen ka?

Ahh yeah, google also says it~ xD
Aha

8:31 AM
or casually konbini (ni) iko?

See, I have plenty to learn haha

or iku?
it does not make a huge difference

iko sounds better...

iko means let's go, while iku means do you want to go

ikimasen ka sounds like you're asking them not to go

8:32 AM
it's one of those constructions...

isn't that ikitai? though they mean the same things, one just means you intend to go, the other means you want to go
Yeah, subtleties that you wouldn't easily realise if you just learned it yourself through vocab and grammar learning

yes ~tai is the wish to go, but it is not yet decided

Don't know if it's very subtle, might not be if you take even a basic class
I see
This conversation is just getting me more excited to do it, haha

in casual japanese there are many ways to say things... subtle differences... yes... but most of the time they won't expect you to know these...

I mean, I have a VERY VERY basic understanding of the language, a VERY VERY VERY limited vocabulary, but I'd love to learn more of it

8:36 AM
it's all about the communication and that works if you understand most of the things
well, having an interest is great to begin with

Do you sometimes talk to someone in Japanese and they don't understand you because they thought you'd speak English? Or do you not look western? (I don't know where you are from)~
Ohh yeah German, sorry
You said it earlier, sorry~
Ignore my stupidity >_>
I'm pretty good with learning languages, I did well with German and French, but they didn't really interest me enough to keep me interested in learning them after I wasn't forced to in school and I never used them, so they sort of slipped out...

I believe they are doing an updated version now, but you might want to check it: nhk.or.jp/lesson/english

der, dem, das, die, whatever in German~ x_x

haha... you are dutch right?

Eeeyup
Mein Deutsch ist... Sehr schlecht ~_~
My German is... Very bad ~_~
xD
Doitsugo wa chou warui desu~
Though, doesn't that say that the German language itself is bad?
I'd have to add "watashi no" to it? Or would that not work the same way, since you are talking about your knowledge of or control over the language

8:42 AM
@AsadaShino you should try writing in kana. Writing in romaji is not a good habit to have imo

I don't know if you can say "My German" as "watashi no Doitsugo" and mean the same thing
@ʇosɥıuonʞʎonʞo わたしのドイツごはちょうわるいです? Like that?

@AsadaShino there are no bad questions here, except maybe bad I'd reqs

@ʇosɥıuonʞʎonʞo Hahaha

@AsadaShino you would probably avoid bad as a word

I see
I'd have to form a more complex sentence, to explain that my control over the German language is lacking
Which contains about 80% words I don't know yet :P

8:47 AM
you just say that you don't speak german

@AsadaShino イエス

Ahh
ドイツごはしゃべらないです
Haven't run that through google translate yet
Dunno if it's in any way right :P

Google says it seems right

that means you do not speak german

8:49 AM
Yeah, that's what you said, right? :P

better: にほん ご は あまり わかりません。
that means that you understand little japanese
or にほん ご は あまり できません。
that means that you can do little german
しゃべる you would probably more use for a positive sentence

Yooo/

にほんごはちょっとしゃべる。

@HamtaroWarrior Yahallo

@HamtaroWarrior o/

8:54 AM
What's up? :>

ohhh darn.... i messed up the particles all the way....
it must be ちょっと にほんご しゃべる。
Meaning I speak a bit japanese...
@HamtaroWarrior nothing much :D
how about you?

@Martin-マーチン I'm in class, but I'm quite bored x)

Haha

@HamtaroWarrior what class?

I'm getting more and more hyped as I am in this conversation~

8:58 AM
Communication skills & stuff

(+.+)(-.-)(_ _) ..zz
(∪。∪)。。。zzzZZZ
hihi....

Communication skillz
"yo yo yo!"

"Wazzup nigga? How you doin in da houz?"

hahaha....
i predict flagz coming in ;)

9:00 AM
I would not have gone that far and I am quite... Hesitant around racial slurs, be they intended or not
Herp derp English be hard langwidge

Meh, kidding but if it does bother anyone I can delete ^^

Haha
It may not offend anyone here, but if it were in a more public place, it'd probably get SJWs up in arms

it's fine i think

Yup, right.
In my school we all make fun of everyone, on every way. We laught about everything and everyone, therefore everybody is at the same state. So I sometimes take it over chats and extern discussions, where people don't act llike this

That sounds like a nice atmosphere
Much better than I've had in my highschool

9:05 AM
It is. We are like a big family!

Cliques, bullying, the works
It was mostly the... students in lower education that were doing that though
And over half of them were out by the second year
So it got a lot better after that.
They sort of eliminated themselves by their own incompetence

@AsadaShino I'm at the equivalent of university, not highschool. I had the same issues @ highschool

I see

Engineering school :)

yeah it gets better in higher education

9:07 AM
In college I didn't really have much interaction with fellow students
I had a few good friends, but we drifted apart after a while as we were split up into different classes when we got to our specialisations

@AsadaShino At what kind of college did u go?

I believe it's called University of Rotterdam in English

@Martin-マーチン Gochisousama deshita

My question was more about the specialisation that you took :3

9:09 AM
"Rotterdam University of applied sciences"
Ahh, Informatics
Programming and the like

Ha nice :D same here, informatic engineering!

Wooo \o/

ffff

9:15 AM
Chat on phone is annoying

it is

Keeps refreshing the page

is that only

So I can't type long messages

@AsadaShino agreed, but it is thousand times better than same time last year

9:16 AM
Can't remember it being this bad back then
But I didn't use i much back then on my phone

~(-w-)~
@mirroroftruth hi mate :>

@HamtaroWarrior yo/

@AsadaShino it might have been langer though... i cannot remember...
but there was atime without a mobile version... and that made it almost impossible to chat
okay... i need to step out now, do some work for my money... see ya soon :D

@Martin-マーチン o/

@AsadaShino what are your primary complaints?

9:24 AM
@ʇosɥıuonʞʎonʞo Page refreshes randomly was the only thing that annoyed me just now. I tried to type a message, halfway through, the page refreshed and the message was gone, I thought that was my fault so I tried again, it refreshed again, then I knew it was the website itself

Q: How to deal with a slowly learning user?

KealeSo I met this certain user who posted their homework problem on SO. They put some effort into answering their questions IMHO and are slowly getting there. They got here already public class Assg2 { public static void main(String[] args) { String w1 = args[1]; String w2 = ar...

@mirroroftruth Into what name?

@HamtaroWarrior of course Toshino Kyouko :D

9:36 AM
Oh! But it would be a pain in the neck to have a lot of people named the same way o:
Thought you wanted to take one of your other pseudo ^^

that is one of the way, one day we might

In some games, my other login pseudo is Fap2BeKawaiii >:D

@HamtaroWarrior elongation i~ sound more lewd

@mirroroftruth I don't get it ._.

@HamtaroWarrior okay that Fap other is lewd word right or it does have some other meaning

9:39 AM

@SeptianPrimadewa March 28 Japan time

@ʇosɥıuonʞʎonʞo i think it is a good idea, how long

@mirroroftruth no, it's the lewd meaning of the word, but I don't get you elongation i~ thing x)

I have a friend applying for a Google internship. So he's basicly asking Google-sensei to notice him :D

then it should be Senpai

Mhhh Sensei can be used to. But then it is not legal anymore :>

9:53 AM
the one worth to be noticed is senpai, sensei are do notice and are old to be noticed

@Hakase That's why I usually opt to sitting back, relax, and blow their brains out.

A: "noone", "no one" or "no-one"?

Mehper C. Palavuzlar"no one" is the correct one. noone is the common misspelling of "no one". "Noone" is formed for consistency with "nobody", and also its opposites "anyone" and "everyone", but it is still considered nonstandard because of the doubled vowels creating a temptation to read and pronounc...

@Unihedron yo/

yo/
counts the amount of kyoukos in the room

I like how "no-one" looks and it shouldn't be confusing on line breaks

10:19 AM
> Amount vs. number. Amount is used in reference to mass nouns (i.e., uncountable nouns such as bravery, water, and charisma). Number is used in reference to count nouns (i.e., countable nouns such as dog, year, and eyeball).

I like noone
and no-one

but not no one

"noone" I wanna read as "noon"
