most tea shops will have a very wide variety of some default black teas with a hundred different flavors, but the base tea doesn't get better because of that

I've found that keemun, chinese red teas and japanese sencha (and genmaicha) and gyokuro are the best for me

you can find pretty cheap good teas like keemun for the same price as the regular store-bought tea in currency per gram

20-packet thing of tea in a shop usually has 25 grams or so but costs 4 times the amount a non-packeted tea would cost in a tea shop

in my shop the flavored teas cost the same as the store-bought packeted, but they're much tastier

the cheapest chinese reds cost about 4-5 times as much as a packeted tea pack per gram

my current fave pu erh costs 9-10 times as much

people usually use hella grams per cup and their cups are smaller than mine which makes me think they're all crazy

I use 1-1.5g per 300ml

depending on the intensity of a tea

pu erh is pretty intense so 1g

some sencha could be 1.5 for a more pronounced flavor

I like gyokuro at 1g for a very soft grassy flavor

gyokuro is hella expensive tho

but very smooth

the smoothest in my experience

it's about 18-20 times the packeted tea price

google isn't helping me figure out the average price coz I see very differently prices packets

and there's no way to know if it's fresh or if it's good or what

I guess you gotta build a relationship with the tea shop owner to figure out if they're selling the good stuff :I

I tried almost everything except the most expensive sorts of tea in my shop so I know almost everything from there

I'm not interested in green chinese sorts coz they're kinda crude and bitter to my taste

I think Longjing is one of the few chinese greens I like

it's soft kinda like sencha but in a distinctly different way

if you see longjing I recommend to try it

also, make sure to find a shop that lets you buy as low as 20 grams, better if you can get 15 or 10 so you can try lots of different teas at once and not having to eat the cost of buying teas that you didn't like at all

when I started I foolishly bought 50 grams of some random crap and regretted it later

sencha should be pretty much the same everywhere

gyokuro is a more refined version of sencha and more expensive

and it spoils the most of all teas

coz it's so fresh and green

only buy sencha and gyokuro in vacuum sealed plastic packs

there will be a packet with oxygen consuming mixture inside which keeps it fresh

I used to keep my first few packs out in the open as usual and at the rate I drink my teas, they got spoiled after a month or two and became noticeably bitter

@Hakase tbh I never make a tea like that. Put the leaves on a cup and pour hot water on it. I usually put the tea leaves on a kettle with hot water and pour the tea on my cup so I never try to measure how much tea leaves or water I use. It always turn out fine tho

when I finally decided to do a bit more work and store it safely, I put it in a glass bottle, put that original packet of oxygen killer inside and stored it in the fridge

I always add 1 cube of sugar

that's per 300ml of water so pretty weak

but I find that no matter what kind of tea, it always has unpleasant bitterness which goes away with the help of one cube of sugar

I just restocked my storage of that very sugar that I like

there's a thing about sugars to know too

most cheap sugars have a caramel-like flavor

which is totally fucking horrible coz wtf man I'm trying to have a pure taste of the tea I bought and not this crap

so I tried different brands of sugar and eventually I found the one that wasn't manufactured by the same one factory under 9 different labels

this one is properly refined from all those impurities which give it a weird taste and doesn't spoil the flavor at all

so yea, sugar's important also if you add it often

I use these for keeping the leaves out of my mouth

and I don't have a tea pot

so 1g/100ml

if I break a cube apart into crystals, it will be probably covering the surface of a tea spoon without the generous top mountain

a whole tea spoon would actually be about 2 cubes

oh and btw

I tried 3 maybe 4 sorts of darjeeling but its flavor always seemed too pronounced to me

it's like it's got a bite like a lemon

it's not bitter but… idk how to describe how lemons kinda tingle your tongue with another word

well, it's interesting for sure

that's probably the only kind of tea that is like that

of all I've tasted to far

so I guess I'd recommend trying it at least once

it's pretty bright coz it's probably not fermented as much

the darjeelings I've tried had the color like the pile in the center:

it's got a noticeable color difference between its leaves

from green to bright yellow

most other teas are more monotonous

teas are pretty nice

much better than coffee

if only coffee tasted like how it smells

@Hakase hmm, that mean I use around 2-3 cubes. but most people I know use maybe like 5 for their tea. well, some old man I know drink tea without sugar for health reason. But most of the time we only drink cheap tea bag tho

makes my toilet runs much more frequent

I used to add 3-4-5 cubes per the same amount of water, so it would be very sweet

well, I've been reading so many times on the internet how coffee is like a turbo boost which spends all your bonus energy at once (or in a span of 1-2 hours) and how tea is a slow boost which helps you not fall asleep for longer and for example if you're used to having naps in the middle of the day, may help to avoid falling asleep

I've never needed naps, and I've been drinking different sorts of tea for so long that maybe my body became immune to these effects idk

it's as if my biological clock has 26-27 hours a day

if I'm not working and I can be awake and sleep at any time I want, I'll usually cycle through 7 days by sleeping 6 full times

these numbers vary :p

and they respect silence

and apparently they have places where you can comfortably lie down or lay back in a chair

in most companies tho I can't imagine trying to have a nap due to the noises and uncomfortable chairs

it's a national thing

there are places in the world where naps are the norm

idk if it helps with productivity in the field of programming tho

I'd hate having to essentially have 2 work days in one day

when I work on my personal projects, I still can't make use of my tired brain after a nap

then at the end of the day I got forwarded an email from my actual manager where a pretty lengthy exchange has occured before that, and it turned out that fucker snapped a pic of me in that pose and was acting all clowny in the email

when I left that place, my manager reminded me of that case, and I had a laugh

he didn't tho, but fuck em

I was done with the work for the day anyway

it's nice I don't have to deal with people like that every day now

it was a valuable experience but by the end of it there wasn't much more left to learn

there's nothing about restarts in the code apart from automatic reconnection

so he just figured out he disconnected after a while and reconnected back

apparently something's unreliable there, and reconnect fixes it every other time
