I was once asked if I am not afraid to code myself out of work. that's my goal.
case in point — WordPress (of course). more contributors are needed to add more code, to fix which more contributors are needed.
having hundreds of contributors and rising is declared smashing success.
taking code out is declared to be heresy.

2:07 PM
code yourself out of work? it's literally impossible if you have just the slightest idea about marketing
world needs so much help in everything, people at your level will not be out of work in this lifetime

"out of work" as in make a thing and move on forward, not be stuck on one thing forever
my last full time job was opposite — endless death march, never completed, never working well. burnt me out bad.

oh, so single project level "out of work"

more or less :) but coding oneself out of lifetime of work would be big win too :D

it'd be possible if the world around us would stop moving. unfortunately at the very least, compatibility patches will be needed

6:59 PM
an opensource project I deal with have a horrendous site thats a mix of static HTML and incredibly poor PHP

that gaming stuff again?

a friend rebuilt it in WordPress and put up with a tonne of requests and stuff, even duplicated an ancient horrible design to ease any politics
spent ages working on it
pretty much finished it
but a non web developer failed to deploy it because he naively copied over a database without changing the URLs
and refused to give direct access. Now another engine developer has barged in and implemented CSS styling changes to the original static design and announced it to the community, demanding SSH access to implement it
the project lead is now burying his head in the sand and about $3k worth of work has gone down the drain

no good deed goes unpunished

7:17 PM
it happened to myself a few years ago, after a few weeks of work, someone came up with an unfinished homepage design, people like it, so a server admin implemented it in a table based layout in the early hours of the morning surprising everyone

7:35 PM
wp.template for front end templating in WordPress http://wp.me/p4oRhx-5c
WP invented its own JS templating?.. of course it did...

aren't there already a bunch of those
oooh softwarerecs ftw

@Rarst I hadn't realised it was anything other than underscore templating but with the syntax changed...

11:53 PM
@Rarst can I quote this?
