@NeanDerThal Or not, @GayotFow likes teasing and puzzles

indeed
3 travel questions in the hot list currently

@Relaxed and when i said "insider photos" you really though i was serious?

I hoped so!

@NeanDerThal I didn't really think anything, my answer is valid either way, it just fits in the discussion…

@Relaxed why you sound so serious man?
:D

12:02 PM
Sometimes, there are things that beg to be said, no matter what
I don't know, it's the chat medium, it was all quite light-hearted actually

:)
@MarkMayo i may have a general answer, not a direct one..
it is about flights to iran.. airshow is not allowed over iran..
we have to shut it off before entering iran..

really! Interesting
I think we could ask a different question for that one

Iranian government likes propaganda.. for example the real reason behind them not allowing foreign inspectors is that their tech is so low... not the other way around..
I mean that's their latest "submarine"...

heh

of course i would be shy to let people see it ;)

12:07 PM
I was impressed with the new metro in Tehran. Very nice, had mobile reception, ran on time.

metro made by: china...
tank made by iran:
how easy to get that soldier.. it can't be easier!

actually it's a weird combination of French, Chinese and Iranian construction. bu whatever, nice metro :)
Zulfiqar (ذوالفقار) is an Iranian main battle tank (MBT), conceived by Brigadier General Mir-Younes Masoumzadeh, deputy ground force commander for research and self-sufficiency of the armed forces. It is named after Zulfiqar, the legendary sword of Ali, the fourth Caliph and the first Shiite Imam. The test prototypes of the tank were evaluated in 1993. Six semi-industrial prototypes of the tank were produced and tested in 1997. == Design specificationsEdit == === FeaturesEdit === The tank has a distinctive box-shaped, steel-welded turret of local design. Iran Tank :)

@NeanDerThal I do not have the photo of it, but yes

> The Zulfiqar is believed to be developed from major components of the Soviet T-72

@NeanDerThal You know that the Ukrainians took an IS-3 from a museum and got it working again?

12:11 PM
@GayotFow no i didnt

proud to say that I was in the project :) from desktop, not field

I can't mock, NZ's airforce is as follows:
List of active New Zealand military aircraft is a list of military aircraft currently in service with the Armed Forces of New Zealand. For aircraft no longer in service see List of aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and Royal New Zealand Navy. == Royal New Zealand Air Force == === Current inventory === === Royal New Zealand Air Force Historic Flight === === Retired === Some notable combat aircraft that were operated by the air force consisted of the de Havilland Vampire, BAC Strikemaster, A-4G/TA-4G Skyhawk and the CT-4 Airtrainer. Transport aircraft were the Bristol Type 1...

I knew which tank had a compatible chassis :)

Our airforce's logo is the kiwi - a flightless bird :(
but yeah 24 planes and 15 choppers.

IS-3 = Joseph Stalin = the tank's sponsor at the time

12:14 PM
well, we buy stuff from other countries, so i shouldnt mock myself..
@GayotFow man, you were on the project officially?

No, it was just a bunch of guys in collaboration
The IS-3 is a monster but worthless in a duel

nice!

But it can transport 9 guys from A to B safely

@MarkMayo thats all the airforce inventory? seriously?

@JoErNanO you've got a new answer on a bounty, you lucky sod
@NeanDerThal we had a bunch of skyhawks. from the US. We tried to sell them back, the deal fell through, and they've been gathering dust for ages. I think we scrapped them to someone. but otherwise, yeah...
if we get attacked, we're never going to win - too small, so we usually help out with peacekeeping missions in East Timor etc instead

12:18 PM
@MarkMayo now i see why were defending the iranian inventory... makes sense :)
no one will attack you.. too far to bother..
and kiwis do not taste good..

Did you know Japan bombed Aus in WW2?
and a German mine layer made it around the south island of NZ

@MarkMayo yes, read about it

@MarkMayo why did they bomb you? you had soldiers sent to japan?

@NeanDerThal Australia, not NZ

12:21 PM
they must have got the wrong island then..

Aus was fighting Japan in WW2, especially a famous battle in PNG

and the JPEG as well..

@JoErNanO don't forget that our Schengen project is still alive with another question being drafted

exactly :)
Chch has a ww2 military installation that's famous for two incidents in the entire war
1) Missed German mine layer that went right past it

@Relaxed you too. It's the main capstone question that leads to all the others

12:22 PM
chch?

(Christchurch, New Zealand)

Christchurch

2) Fired warning shot in front of fishing vessel. Missed, sank fishing vessel.

And that was their sum total contribution :)

12:23 PM
:D
you really made me laugh so hard
look at the positive side man...

@GayotFow I'm here impatiently waiting for the next question. :)

@JoErNanO me too. it's not as easy as you think :)

I don't think it's easy. If it we're then I'd be the one doing it. :D

User has added a bounty on the ice cream man question??

for sale
is it beautiful or what?

12:28 PM
@GayotFow Does it hit Mach 3?

@JoErNanO nah, but it can reach the med from here
@NeanDerThal buy it dude and we'll faff about in the med

how much? i have like 200 dollars on me now..

gbp 85k
a steal

i do not have that kind of money..

12:31 PM
me either
but you can admire the beauty of it
Pretty sure I know the answer

it looks great

@GayotFow another maybe for you, if you happen to know the answer:

Q: Where can I apply for a Portuguese visa as a resident of Scotland?

Long ThaiI heard that in order to apply for Portugal visa while living in Scotland, I have to do it via the consulate in Manchester, even though the consulate in London is easier to reach. However I cannot find any information to confirm this on the Internet. I tried to call the consulate but they didn't ...

@MarkMayo please see if I'm right
@MarkMayo I might be able to put on my lawyer hat and speak to the Vice Consul
but it would be cheating :(

@GayotFow I can't read that, have no idea if it's right

@GayotFow whats that site! it is a university site

12:47 PM
Yes, translate it using google or etc

i can understand most of it..

interesting:
1
A: What facility was our bus blocked from observing in northern Iran?

jpatokalAccording to this map from the Nuclear Threat Initiative (2006), your GPS reading at the western bend of the road between Rasht and Qazvin corresponds almost perfectly to "Mo-Allem Kalayeh: Suspected nuclear research center". However! This (ancient) page gives the site's coordinates as 36°26'05...

possible nuclear location

1:27 PM
@MarkMayo There ain't no way that I'm freely transferring you my bounty. I've worked hard for those 50 points. :P

:D

Can we contact the higher ups and tell them about this spam wave?

well then hopefully somoene else does an even better answer ;)

@Shog9 Are you here?

seems to have stopped in last 10 minutes, but it might just be a pause
actually that answer helps you towards winning the Sep bounty comp, @JoErNanO, if you bounty it you can start a new 4th bounty already....

1:34 PM
So you think I swim in rep? :D

your profile pic has you standing next to a lake...

Stupid chinese spam. I thought chinese characters were banned.
Your pic has you sleeping on a bench. But that doesn’t mean that you beg for rep. :P

oh it's started again :/
I'm not sleeping, I'm thinking! ;)

Meditating is the word you are looking for.
@MarkMayo Is there a moderator chat I can access?

are you a mod anywhere?

1:44 PM
@mindcorrosive We're getting spammed like crazy here.

I'll pop into the mod chat and see

Nope. I'm looking for somewhere where SE higher-up hang out.

yeah, I'm in the teacher's lounge [mod chat room] asking now

Thanks.
I might give you my bounty after all. :D

Community Moderators are being pinged
I've gotta crash (2am) but the theory is that the automated system may have stopped them by now, and if not, a CM will hopefully come and investigate :)

1:57 PM
Does anyone have an example of the spam you folks are getting?

@Undo Glad to have you here.

@MarkMayo From what I can tell they should be blocked at this time.

You too @bluefeet
Let me look around.

Yes that stuff.

2:00 PM
I've destroyed all of the users who posted the spam, and the IPs appear to be blocked

We got at least 10 in rapid succession.

If they stick to that pattern, it'll get nuked fairly quickly. You have the Tavern flagging this stuff, which is a force to be reckoned with

it should be handled now... hopefully

Sounds great. Thanks for bringing in the cavalry.

If you folks would like we can have Smokey post reports from your site here

2:03 PM
@Undo That'd be something to discuss with our mods and addicted users. I don't feel like I can take this decision single-handedly.
Would you care to post a question on our meta? :)

Eh, kinda busy at the moment
We can flip the switch any time, and it looks like this wave got spamrammed anyway

Ok I'd say we wait and see then. If they come back I'll come get you on Charcoal HQ. OK?

Sure

Perfect. Thanks again @bluefeet @Undo

Q: What facility was our bus blocked from observing in northern Iran?

Mark MayoRecently on a bus trip from Rasht, Iran, to Tehran, Iran, the driver's assistant came down the bus aisle, ordering all the curtains closed on one side, and for a few minutes we were actually forbidden from looking out the windows on that side! I can only assume he didn't want a hassle with milit...

observe Gayot's law. 8 votes in as many hours

@GayotFow Never forget that @MarkMayo is a superstar. :D

Yes, he's a good lad
The law applies nonetheless :)

I never said he was a good lad. Just a superstar.
So for him you'd have to draft a brand new law.
Or a corollary, if you wish.
@KateGregory I'm an Oxford comma man. You got me. :D

You already have skeet
@JoErNanO whoa!!! What's going on about the Oxford comma???
Highly emotive issue

The Mayo gave me a bounty just so he could gain advantage on the competition. Ach.
:D

3:03 PM
@KateGregory, are you listening here?

3:24 PM
@GayotFow sometimes :-)

3:52 PM
@KateGregory I like the Oxford comma comment. I am very pedantic in that way.
And I appreciate it when someone brings it up :)

4:15 PM
@CGCampbell your avatar reflects a sense of pride in Scottish heritage, nice.

@JonathanReez You should also join the bounty competition.

4:33 PM
@MarkMayo Which flag are you voting for?

5:26 PM
I gave an "IANAL" disclaimer - I hope my answer is ok. Does the US Government's bureaucracy have a reputation for being capricious and untrustworthy?

@AaronHall Are you nuts? They are watching us! :D

Is that grammar correct? have/has? "does it have..." seems right...
I think society is better off if we refuse to cooperate with those who deal in bad faith.

@GayotFow Thanks Gayot; My paternal great-grandfather moved the family to Canada; My grandfather moved us to the US, so unlike what I believe most Scots-Americans, we actually know where we are from :)

@CGCampbell do you wear the tartan? ancient? hunting?
We wear BW modern

My father and I both wear BW modern as well, shrug
never could get my son to show off his knees :(

5:36 PM
Do you have a sgian dubh?

I have just returned from Scotland. The Lewis and Harris born driver/guide was rather negative on a lot of English promoted or started 'Scottish' traditions.
Born and part raised, still having part in a croft there.
He also said that many Scottish traditions have been saved in Canada, USA, Australia and NZ

We both have full dress - and every day as well; for my full dress, I have a pin, a sgian dubh, brogues, a tam and a beaver sporran
As a teenager, I learned the pipes, although I've not picked them up in oh, 15-20 years

5:52 PM
Wow, v nice kit

6:03 PM
@CGCampbell I got my sgian dubh at a military antiques store in Marylebone. I use a fake when I go abroad.
@Willeke What were you doing in Scotland?

I was a honest tourist, doing a few days in Edinburgh and a three day tour to Skye.
Oh, I managed to fit in one day in Glasgow.

What? no knots? Can you understand the Glaswegians?

I had not trouble understanding any of the people I met, but I guess most were well used to tourists.
No knots, I had a real holiday this time. Hardly ever mentioned them to anybody

6:21 PM
@GayotFow my dress knife has a boar bone handle (our "animal" is a boar as shown in our crest (as shown in my avatar)) and is... well.... verrrry old passed down from something like the 15th century, my fake (I use one as well) is a new one, with a miniature fork and spoon in it, because people think it's cool :p

Excellent!

hehe, my dad is great with all forms of dialects and accents, his 'normal' voice is pretty mid-west american, his 'tourist scots' is understandable, and my memories of him arguing with his grandfather was "wtf did they just say" those words are all English, aren't they?

Mine is deer antler and goes at least back to the highlanders in the Crimea War. My fake has a big glass ruby on the hilt and just sheath, no blade. I can't affect a scots accent though :)

annny way, thanks for noticing my avatar, and I'm sorry I've bored you with trivia :)

@CGCampbell I eat that stuff up.... Any time you got some

6:45 PM
I wish I could be in the US to watch that whole circus of Trump/Clinton unfold
It's got to be wild

2 hours later…
8:30 PM
@NeanDerThal that's taking the piss-tol!
@MarkMayo i thought about taking such a ferry a couple of times but never actually did. I do know a bit about ferries from China to Taiwan and between Japan and South Korea though ...

9:16 PM
@hippietrail You got some spare rep for bounties?
