@Rilakkuma Hi!

4 hours later…

@MarkMayo Bah blame the Sydneysiders, I'm just an out-of-place Melburnian d-:

@hippietrail as long as I've been aware you've been in Sydney ;) Although I do recall just missing you in Nov 2012 in Melbourne, to be fair

5 hours later…

@Flimzy found a sugardaddy apparently? :)

@Bernhard Just wishful thinking :)

Haha, ok, thought mark was about to give birth :p

A: buying travel backpack?

FlimzyOnebag.com has some good suggestions for travel packs for various use cases, with an emphasis on traveling light. I recently bought the MEI Voyager bag, as suggested by that site, and am happy with it thus far. Without more details of what you're looking for, though, it's probably pretty diffic...

@Bernhard: I've been using my MEI Voyager daily (literally) for well over a year now. My only regret is that when I cut some of the straps shorter, I went a little too short.

A: What's the most comfortable way to travel with 2 backpacks or bags and a DSLR camera?

FlimzyI travel with two bags. My main bag is the MEI Voyager, and naturally contains all my main gear. Clothes, toiletries, laptop, extra batteries, etc. My second bag is a Think Tank Speed Demon 2.0, and it holds my camera, lenses, etc, and when I'm traveling, a water bottle, perhaps spare change...

ok, that sounds interesting :)
it has removeable daypack?

No, it doesn't. There is a larger version that does.
I have a smaller backpack that I can fit inside of it, though.
Or, more often, I carry both (depending on how much stuff I have)

5:49 PM
ok, and it is allowed as carry-on I suppose?

To me, a detachable daybag kinda defeats the purpose of a carryon bag... because it makes the bag too large to carry on at that point.
Yes, it's the maximum carryon size.

well, if the daypack qualifies and personal item it would be ok, right?

You can wear it as a back pack, or with shoulder straps. incidentally, when I wear it as a back pack nobody ever asks if it's too big to carry on. When it's on my shoulder, I'm often told to check it (at plane-side or bus-side check-in).
Yes, if you detach it, then the daypack could count as your personal item.
This is the "daypack" I use... it's large as daypacks go, but it's perfect for my lenovo thinkpad: amzn.to/1sbg0LR
the price has really jumped... It used to list for $99, and I bought mine for $85
I'm guessing it's been discontinued... thus the high prices now
Indeed, it has been discontinued. sad face

unbelievable :)

Mine is starting to show signs of wear... I guess I need to take extra good care of it!

5:54 PM
well, if you use it daily

Indeed. :/ And the daypack isn't nearly as rugged as the MEI bag I use
Anyway... I highly recommend MEI as a brand.
If you want the detachable daypack, get that model.

hmm, my local store doesn't sell MEI

I don't know if any stores do. Where are you located?
I ordered mine direct from the manufacturer

holland
or rotterdam area to be more exact

Hmm... might be tricky there. The manufacturer is in the US.

5:57 PM
yeah, well, I like to try some things on :)

it's a small company
as you can tell from their web site :)

hehehe :)

I'd send them an email... they might ship internationally
I mean, I'm sure they will
they might do it for a reasonable price :)
if you're not in a huge hurry

Then I understand why they don't sell them here
well, I will need it in een week or 5 ;)

Read onebag.com... he has good suggestions for other bags
but mostly, he helps decide how to choose a bag... what to look for
so you can take that advice to your local store and get the best fit for your needs

6:00 PM
yeah, well, my main concern is that I am aiming to travel without checked luggage
otherwise any backpack would suffice
but I think that that might be impossible

Right. That's his goal, too (and mine)
He specifically suggests avoiding wheeled luggage, for instance
it adds weight and bulk to your luggage without adding any real utility
it's so much easier to carry a back pack than to carry wheeled luggage
practically anywhere
I now laugh any time I see someone going through the subway with a wheeled bag

haha, been there
but I sweat easily, so in hot environment it is not that bad
but the one I used came for free, so that was ok

I sweat, too... that's one reason I like merino wool clothing... I still sweat, but at least I don't stink after :)
So where are you headed with this new bag you'll be buying?

USA, washington, new york, toronto and finally winnipeg

Well... order the bag and have it shipped to your US hotel! haha

6:05 PM
hahaha, just wear all the clothes

right :)

but I want to bring back a piece of luggage from there back home
winnipeg is for a wedding

Not your wedding, right?

Nope, afaik

haha

6:08 PM
no it is supposed to be my brothers wedding ;)

6:25 PM
this MEI voyager backpack really seems ideal
but I wouldn't be able to buy it somewhere probably
silver streak also
:(
now I have to find a proper alternative

This place lets you order online: meivoyageur.com

MEI in dutch is a month, so that is a bit difficult to search for

I think it's a reseller, so prices are a bit higher
but they might be able to ship to Europe faster

I found that one, do they also have the one with the daypack? (don't think so)
NOTE: Due to recent demand for this hand made product - please plan ahead. Current delivery times can exceed 4 weeks. Please mention travel dates in your order notes.

ahh, looks like just the Voyager there

6:35 PM
yeah, and delivery times won't help me either :p

bummer
Tell your brother to postpone the wedding!

hehehe :)
it was planned more than a year ago
should've asked this question then :p

hehe, indeed

funny
best alternative so far: lowealpine.com/tt-carry-on-40
but not even close
this sucks :(
excuse my french
ok, I send them an e-mail
