@hippietrail - nope, (looks at logs) - believe it was @AnkurBanerjee ?
(flagging him to notify)
so @dlanod and @RoflcoptrException are both eyeing up Canada soon for travel, judging by questions in the last 24 hours :)

1:01 AM
Travel.SE is a haven for stalkers, that's all I'm saying. You could easily deduce that I have a US/Canada trip over Christmas/New Year's with a pregnant woman, looking for places with multiple rooms.

2 hours later…
2:39 AM
and that you're from Aus, called Donald ...
your age and surname are in your profile
and where you'll be on new years eve ;)
unlike some of us you don't have a blog tho... :/
I mean if you were to stalk, my blog shows you where I am at all times (well in the last 30 min, usually)

3:01 AM
@MarkMayo Yeah, the profile is pretty much a dead giveaway.
But I view that as cheating. Too simple.

2 hours later…
5:23 AM
"too simple". There's a reddit thread at present about the two words you fear the most. Be thankful there's no real stalkers in here ;)

6:16 AM
hmm who shall i stalk today?

6:56 AM
not me please
@MarkMayo You're right, I'm flying tomorrow

7:11 AM
oh yeah i wanted to ask you guys about finding a flight
@MarkMayo: do you have access to travel agent flight system doodad or did i imagine that?
i wanted to know of any cheap flight offers from anywhere in europe to anywhere in australia that might be coming up in the next two months - for anyone who is talented at that stuff... or who enjoys it (-:

just use a matrix flight search ;)
choose the middle of europe and the limit the nearby search for 1500 kms

7:31 AM
"just"? d-:
seems i need to involve keanu reeves?

I tried that once with the google software, but after 24 hours i still hadn't any response

@hippietrail No, but you do need to know kung fu.

why don't you use flightfox?

does it only use some airlines like every other site i've tried or does it really use them all?

Try it and see if it uses Southwest Airlines. I know that they're not in normal aggregators.

7:43 AM
hmm connection's gone flaky...
bah they call that flexible? d-:

the wireless cable must be bent somewhere
restricts the flow of ones

zeros i have plenty of
i think a lot of ones get stolen in romania too

no big surprise there.. ever heard of the Romanian pyramids?

@RoflcoptrException: i don't see this option of which you speak to "limit the nearby search for 1500 kms"
we don't need pyramids here - we have the gypsy pagodas
i have to commit a finder's fee!

it depends if your talking about flightfox
or ita software

7:50 AM
i don't have a solid timeframe yet and definitely no spare money for playing games with
what's an ita?

International Trombone Association, obviously

i see
is 740 chf cheap or expensive?

Ita Buttrose.
Well known for her cheap flight finding ability.

let me ask my amazing currency converter app i'm working on
@RoflcoptrException: ooh that does look pretty cheap for a starting price

I've found a lot of such flights for around 740 chf

7:57 AM
got some details on that ticket?

for example
august 24
milan, doha, melbourne
25 hours :(
qatar airways

this i care about least

or venice doha melbourne

more important is can i get a free stopover in qatar and do i need a visa? (-:

21 hours
:)
742 seems to be a a frequent price
i checked for

ZRH, BSL, STR, MXP, GVA, MUC, FRA, NUE, LYS, VCE, CGN, NCE, DUS, CDG, ORY, BRU, MRS, PRG, HAJ, VIE, AMS, BER, SXF, TXL, FCO, TLS, HAM, LGW, LHR, BUD, LTN, BCN, BHX, BRS, CPH, PMI, MAN, WAW, IBZ, TUN, CTA, MAD, ALC, EDI, ALG, GLA, OSL, BGO, ARN, AGP

to

MEL, AVV, HLT, ABX, PTJ, MGB, WGA, NRA, GFF, MIM, LST, CBR, MYA, HBA, PKE, BHS, ADL, DBO, SYD, BHQ, NTL, WYA, PUG, PLO, TMW, NAA, TRO, PQQ, ARM, CMA, XTG, CFS, SGO, ULP, CTL, BNK, RMA, TWB, OOL, BNE, WNR, BVI, MCY, LDH, BKQ, HVB, ZBL, BCI, BEU, LRE

8:08 AM
i noticed that the flightfox page used both the words "stopover" and "layover" for different senses without explanation btw

8:54 AM
@hippietrail I did the merge. Which one did you want as main: hand-luggage right?

6 hours later…
3:08 PM
@MarkMayo do you know this? vijs.ca

1 hour later…
4:09 PM
@AnkurBanerjee: well just on general principles you should always merge the new one with the blank tag wiki into the old one with the tag wiki, at least to respect the work of whoever wrote the wiki
as for which term should be the main one that's less imortant
i might file a feature request that the system should warn you when doing that or always bring the tag wiki across if the other one is blank
failing that look at the wording of the merge request d-;
i don't think i have a way to see exactly how i asked anymore
sorry for grumpiness but my computer's mousepad is dying - acts like the left mousebutton is constantly pressed )-:

@RoflcoptrException - I'm aware of the restaurant, yes. It also has a street truck that they sell from, however, you'll need the iPhone app for street carts/trucks in Vancouver to track it down - or rely on blind luck :) I've not been, but apparently it's fantastic.

@hippietrail Sorry. :( I hadn't checked for tag wikis before doing the merge. You're right though, there should be some warning about that

if you're having less hardware issues than me you could write the feature request on meta.SO and i'll vote for it
now i'm fighting with the thing searching for how to disable the mousepad

Q: Merging / synonimising tags should warn of tag wiki loss

Ankur BanerjeeOn Travel.SE I recently merged two tags, where tag A is 'main' tag and tag B is a synonym tag. In this case, tag B was an older tag which had tag wiki content filled out. So when the merge was done, tag wiki data was lost. I think this is not an ideal case. In case of synonym creation / tag merg...

sorry again for my grumpiness it's not like i wrote that tag wiki or anything just i shame when anyone's work disappears by accident
@AnkurBanerjee: added some tags for ya (-:

Totally get that. The tag synonym / merge tool gives no indication at all that a tag wiki might exist, and I hadn't checked beforehand. :/

is there a way to find the text i put in the moderator flag? that could make another good meta question
yep there is
> Hi there mods. I just created which should be a synonym for . Please synonomize if you agree it's a good idea.
so my other feature request is "read carefully" d-;

Ack. :/ The tag synonym tool doesn't make it any easier either. It has this system of target tag / source tag that I often get confused about

it should tell you more stuff!
like which one(s) already have synonyms, how many, what they are, ditto for tag wiki and excerpt, creation date, date of last use and/or change
One of thouse should be labelled "synonym"!
i should apologize to @MarkMayo too for the times he got them backwards since it's obviously not his fault

4:46 PM
Oh the tag tool is horrendous, every time I have to sit and think about what way around it is trying to mean

contributed a grumpy but constructive answer myself (-:
well if you find any other hideous mod tools don't forget to file bug reports and feature requests to fix them ... use regular users can't do it ... most of the time (-:

Every single time I use that interface, I need to pause and actually think which way the tags go and sometimes I just get it wrong. Your suggestion of calling it Main / Synonym is good!

their might be other terms to compete with "main"

In the synonym list, they use the terms 'Master' / 'Synonym' but then they use something else for the tool itself.

@AnkurBanerjee: what did you change? looks like you replaced the image with the same image \-:

4:58 PM
Your image wasn't showing up. Missing link in the body post. It showed up as [synonym user interface][1]
I don't know why, because the edit history shows you had the image.
But in the normal view, the image was missing. :/

oh i fixed it myself at the same time. accidentally deleted the link at the bottom before submitting d-:

Oh I see

wikipedia would've said "edit conflict" (-:

5:51 PM
lol
I definitely agree - having it improved would be handy
@Jin - wasn't this week meant to be new design week? How's it all coming along? :D

Jin
6:10 PM
someone bat signaled me!
@MarkMayo hey there

g'day :)
we should totally have our own bat signal

Jin
status on travel: i'm currently tweaking the design some
we talked about the design further. we feel it should feel more like "while you're travel" instead of generic travel motiffs

changing much from the screenshots you gave us?
oh interesting

Jin
imagine sitting by the window isle looking out seeing the cloud.
i feel that's far more relatable
also, we're updating some icons as well.

will be interesting to see what you come up with
@hippietrail and I were commenting that the designs were rather similar to this site: tagme.expedia.co.nz

Jin
6:21 PM
i like the idea proposed on meta feedback, that the voting/favstar should be more signage looking.

compass, dotted lines, location markers, airplane etc

Jin
it's hard to capture the "destination" of travel, but i think we should focus on the "journey" part of the travel, that's something everyone can relate

I don't see how they're similar. I think there will be obvious similar elements for any travel related site.

Jin
@AnkurBanerjee right. we talked about that too. for all my SE site designs, I want to make sure the design is unique to the community, so it doesn't look like something others may create.

@AnkurBanerjee - yes, it was just the components I mentioned. The overall design is diff.

6:23 PM
True that

Jin
btw you guys are aware that once the site graduates, the privileges will change right?

yup

6:54 PM
dammit i will have to earn some new rep??

about time too ;)

2 hours later…
9:06 PM
Not a travel question, but I'll ask it in here after debating it on facebook. At what time (GMT) are the most people asleep in the world?
(and don't just quote the yahoo answers post on the same topic ;))

I'd go about 6 or 7 pm GMT. About all four billion people in Asia would still be in night, it's set across most of Africa and a chunk of eastern Europe.
Especially since a lot of Africa still operates on farming time (bed shortly after sunset, rise at sunrise), so that's some additional %age of 1 billion people.

1 hour later…
10:16 PM
yes
i think that's a reasonable assumption

@RoflcoptrException: what dates did you find those fares from europe to australia? the cheapest i can find is about $1200
just checked four or five of those comparison sites
on qatar airlines' own site i don't even get that cheap: booking.qatarairways.com/qribe-web/public/…

Feel free to use my flightfox discount to see if their experts can beat your $1200 ;)
it upsets me on there when I see people getting 4 first class tickets whinging over spending $30 to find a cheaper rate, but on the whole I still think it's worth it
