Oh stop being so pedantic. :p

:D
How are you? Still in Korea or making your way back to Australia?

hehe you don't have to deal with dozens of whiny top-heavy-ers whining that it's not a real christmas in australia - like jesus was from south london or new jersey!
no i've been back for twenty days and have mad my first repayment on my credit card debt (-:
i just realized how badly we need a derogatory term that covers people from anywhere in the entire northern hemisphere (-;

A: Do not automatically expire single-use tags

hippietrailThere's definitely some kinds of tags that need to stay even with a single use: destinations and airport codes. (The very same situation will occur on the new patents.SE site where all posts should be tagged with the patent numbers they discuss.) In my opinion all other kinds of tags here should...

i can't watch videos - i'm in the library so no sound

Shame :/

also netbook is bogged down with all the stuff i've wanted to look up for the past two days when i haven't had net access
well it works without sound this time (-:
my shopping questions are getting downvoted
oh and close voted - never with any comments

Which ones?

sorry i closed the link and the hd is thrashing now, but it was about buying a tent or sleeping bag in albania

Q: Is it easier and/or cheaper to replace my lost tent in Albania or Greece?

hippietrailWhen travel.SE was shiny and new I asked a very similar question which became a point of controversy but in the end it has remained open and thought to be on-topic under the circumstances. Sadly I left the tent I bought in Bulgaria in the van of some guys I travelled with for a couple of days. H...

i don't remember the previous ones - but i usually put a comment asking the voter to comment - so could be findable by my "activity" doohickey on SE

It's not closed though. The one you linked to.

no not closed just a new close vote and a new down vote both anonymous

First person to visit all 201 'sovereign entities' in the world: csmonitor.com/World/Africa/2012/1126/…
@hippietrail Hmmm. I wish more people had SE etiquette.
Damn newbies.

i bet he included vatican city but not tibet, and probably vacillated about taiwan but went anyway, what about somalia which has no current sovereign??
what do you think about re-introducing a new-years-eve tag? i'm sure we discussed it a year ago and decided no
but it seems the tagging then is split between "public holidays" and "seasonal"
and we do have a good number of good nye questions

Yeah I think we went for one of those catch-alls. I think NYE should fall under public-holidays.
We can make NYE a synonym

2:06 AM
but is it a public holiday? and everywhere?

Pretty much.

i think lumping and splitting should depend on numbers - like a fractal - more detail where it's needed...

Do we really need it for NYE though?
WHERE WILL THE MADNESS END??? Each public holiday will start clamouring for its own tag.

2:25 AM
we use the fractal principle to decide when the clamouring occurs
when any part of the field gets busy we can zoom in for extra detail by adding more specific tags

And how do we determine the crossover boundary?
I think it was merely a case of 'seasonal' tag being misused. NYE is a already a synonym of public-holidays, and the tag wiki for public-holidays explicitly mentions NYE too.
The way I see it, public-holidays is for a defined set of public holidays; 'seasonal' is more for, say, 'I want to go see the Northern Lights at North Pole' (only possible in winter)

2:45 AM
with our brains
hmm so how would this situation compare to the situation with lumping/splitting language name tags?
basically if a huge relative portion of one tag (such as public holidays) is taken up by one specific thing (such as new year) then it might warrant a tag of its own

Okay, that makes sense

in much the same way i recently created a new toll tag where previously tolls came under the fees and charges tag

Have we reached that point yet?

i thought you were geeky enough to get my fractal analogy d-;
maybe
i'm still busy catching up with all the stuff i wanted to do while i didn't have net access or i'd do some tallying

Seems like 4-5 according to a simple search

2:59 AM
first two hours up. had to get a new code and log in again ...
the tag - i think canada and usa companies are the same company, but australian one is distinct though maybe had some historic connection?
@AnkurBanerjee: is that a ratio of 4:5 or is that "about four or five"?

Not a ratio
number

so four or five are nye questions and how many are for other questions?
i'd say four or five is enough to warrant a separate tag. we did it with just one or two questions for and against my better judgement

3:16 AM
I'm going to wait for @MarkMayo to weigh in on the above.

no worries
i still care about tags, i just don't want to be "bossy" (-:

for this one can you diamonds move his edit to a comment under his name?

Q: Can you tell a cabbie which route to take?

HalimeI'm going back home to Virginia for the Thanksgiving holiday and I'll be taking a taxi to Boston Logan. I've noticed that in the past, the cabbie tends to take a longer route, and I was wondering if was bad etiquette to dictate which route I'd like him/her to take. EDIT: Wow. I want to thank ...

or should i just add a comment suggesting to the op to do it that way himself?

Comment is probably the best way to go. Mods can't migrate an edit to a comment.

yeah just answer to comment i spose
@halime: Your "thank you" edit shouldn't really be in the question, as questions are intended to help everybody who finds them via a web search, not just the original asker. I suggest that you should move it to a comment right here. — hippietrail 20 secs ago
The murder of Tim McLean (October 3, 1985 – July 30, 2008) occurred on the evening of July 30, 2008. McLean, a 22-year-old Canadian man, was stabbed, beheaded and cannibalized while riding a Greyhound Canada bus about 30 km west of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba traveling the Trans Canada Highway. On March 5, 2009, McLean's killer, 40-year-old Vince Weiguang Li () (born April 30, 1968), was found to be not criminally responsible for the murder and was remanded to a high-security mental health facility where he remains to this day. Incident The incident took place near Portage la Prai...

Yeah I read this. I was first told about this by a Canadian girl I met in Jordan. Totally didn't believe her back then!

i remember when it happened but this is the first time i've read the whole series of events

It's insane!

schizo!
oh i just noticed - now why is nye a mere synonym but this strange single-country event gets its own tag? d-:

Q: Browser extension of userscript that allows user-specified custom highlighting of web pages?

hippietrailRecently I've found I have a need for a web browser enhancement that provides functionality for the user to define certain fields of certain web pages or sites to receive highlighting in various colours. My use case is that in my industry we receive generated emails from various companies which ...

Q: Tipping in Poland: saying "thank you" when the waiter collects your money

joulesmI read that while tipping in Poland is standard, you should not say "thank you" to the waiter when he takes the cash if you are expecting change. Otherwise, he will assume that the amount overpaid is his tip. Thus, if you want to leave less of a tip than what you gave, you should hold all "thank ...

wow, the first time that a friend answered a question I sent a link to (directly on the site) :) ping @hippietrail
btw, can someone please add the tag synonym "genova" -> "genoa"?

Q: Rule 1: Be nice!

Mark MayoSo there's a couple of metas about this, and it's been discussed at length in the chat room, and the mods' chat room. What it comes down to: Stackexchange has rules about being nice. We've been very lenient with these rules. We will no longer be. Insults / personal attacks will result in susp...
